Fun fact: this movie was recorded in a crimeless favela. It became crimeless not because of some police operation or BOPE operation. It's not in the hands of criminal organizations no more only because it's close to the BOPE headquarters, literally only because it's near the BOPE. That's how much feared the BOPE is

I'm Brazilian and this film perfectly portrays the police and criminal culture of Rio de Janeiro (which is a culturally very different state from the rest of Brazil). Yes, violence is real and drug traffickers are extremely violent. In Brazil we have the police that kill the most in the world, but also the one that dies the most (as the violence of criminals means that the police have to be violent in return), the number of deaths in Brazil far exceeds that of several countries in war. The film also perfectly portrays the dominant culture and thinking in universities to this day. This film was made with the intention of criticizing police violence, but ended up generating empathy among the majority of the population towards honest police officers. No matter how much time passes, the film remains accurate today and has had a huge cultural impact, giving visibility to elite police groups and generating a desire among many people to become a police officer. In short, it is an extremely realistic film.

the beauty of this movie is that, its cruel, but its not apologetic. it shows both the weight, and the mental damage those people go through to do their job. and above all, this isnt a "facist" movie, because it shows both the good, and the bad. the fact they huntdown and hurt innocents, just because they are close to the crimminals, is not treated as a good thing, on the contrary, it put nascimento, at odds with his second in command. but at that point, he NEEDED to go full on brutal to ensure that his followup is baptized in fire and ready to lead his team without caring for the consequences. it also shows that, while the criminals are a massive issue, both the society itself as well as the corruption of the police is why this hydra will never die, as they always feeding it so it can grow back stronger. this is probably the best depiction of a flawled police. and in many ways, i would argue that it did a better job at both setting the tone, and everything that surrounds the characters, than shows like the shield or even the wire. the ending shot in particular, is not a triumphant "kill the big evil guy and win" its a cruel hunt, to takedown someone regardless of the sacrifices made along the way, and it ends with the new capitain, refusing the most humane begging from someone who had already accepted death, and pose no threat. but it was a shot that needed to be taken in the way it was, to prove that at that point, mathias was no longer the ideologist he was at the beginning. he had shed his humanity aside, and became someone nascimento could trust to carry his troop moving foward, as he steps down from his hole of leadership.
It seems that everyone who reacts to this film feels sorry for the tortured boy at the end because they don't realize that he was pointing the gun at Maria and carelessly let her escape, otherwise she would also be dead, that is, he was a criminal too. He wasn't a poor thing, but someone who would kill any good person if it was convenient for him. sorry if there are errors in English, I used the translator
Great react man, you gotta also check out Elite Squad 2, is an direct sequel of this, and is really great, some say is even better. I'm brazilian and these two movies (1 and 2) are the best brazilian movies.
I'm from RJ, but I can't say whether this is exaggerated or not, as I live in an upscale area . From what I've heard, this is what really happens in these areas. I love your videos man.
The vast majority of brazillians live outside of drug/militia controlled areas. But for those that live in such communities, specially in Rio, the movie is very realistic. City of God shows the opposite viewpoint from people inside these communities. But even in those violent zones, the majority of people are working class citizens trying to make an honest living. And there is this point, the drugs are distributed in the Favela, they came from somewhere else and are sold to rich people. Both ends, rich users and suppliers, are seldom touched by police.
The level of corruption in here is sadly so deep, I dont think theres a way to go back to "normal". Not only in Rio, the entire country. Rio's situation is just magnified because its one of the most (if not the most) known brazilian cities in the world. The thing is, the brazilian people is so tired of it and the problems that comes with it, they actually embrace this ultimate type of solution, like killing the drug dealers instead of arresting them, etc. Its a no win situation. Never ending cycle, pretty much. I'll give you one example: the organized crime got to the point of bribing former BOPE soldiers and military guys to teach them stuff they learn in the especialized courses. They had to move some of the most especialized marine courses to a different estate, away from Rio, so thugs would have a harder time getting their hands in the information teached there. It's actually insane. Even former BOPE soldiers are getting involved in the killing of important figures like State Representatives, etc. It's sad. I hope you watch the 2nd movie. Great reaction. Cheers.
This movie got the whole country talking about it, bc its a big country yk… Its a reality that few live, this got ppl hating or admiring the police in those operations but its hard to trust police in those places especially if you are black… but its a great movie that shows other the sides of the story, the actor is our beloved Wagner and he is just amazing and a lovely man

5min15sec It is difficult to explain to a foreigner the courage of these mothers, wives and sisters of criminals in dealing with the local police. But you know: when the police arrest one of them and take them away, the women go with them to make sure they go to the police station and don't get killed for 'resisting arrest'
I am from Rio. The city is even worse right now. I am glad I left the country in 2004. And foreigners have no clue what crime really is. Worse than that only Africa and even then it depends where.
An interesting fact is that this was supposed as a critic to police violence but the people are so full of shit because of everything we have to endure that Cap Nascimento became some kind of hero.
Brazil is a country with many different realities and i, who live in southern brazil, cant relate, but the people who live there say that reality is even worse than the movie
-Several things have to be taken into consideration when watching this film: -It is based on the book by the real Captain Nascimento who has another name. -BOPE is Rio de Janeiro's SWAT that deals with highly armed and trained Narco Guerrillas from the favelas who were initially trained in the 60s by leftist guerrillas trained in Cuba and who use the favela population as a shield to this day as the Red Command . -Unfortunately, Brazil is a poor country with a lot of corruption where the normal police are corrupt as you see in the film and BOPE is basically the police's police. -Brazil has 5 times more murders than the USA, which has 5 to 10 times more murders than Europe or Canada, the favelas of Rio de Janeiro are a war zone and this film shows that. -In the original version of the film, Mathias was supposed to be the hero and the main caracter of the film and Captain Nascimento was supposed to be the anti-hero/villain, the director and the main actor are left-wing and think like the college students shown in the film think, Focaut's view that criminals are victims of society taking revenge on her and she deserves this revenge, Ignoring that the Narcos of the red command are assassins who kill anyone who gets in their way and that the BOPE is a force opposing them with the same intensity. -However, when the film was going to be released, copies of it were leaked onto the internet and nobody liked it and the director changed the film to how it is, thinking that the public would see Captain Nascimento as a criminal. -But the public hates drug dealers and corrupt people, so the film wanted to denounce the extreme right, it turned Captain Nascimento into a Hero of the people and to this day the director and the Actor hate the film and never wanted to continue it because its effect is the opposite. -The next film, shows the militias that are corrupt police officers (extrem right), the drug dealers and corrupt politicians against the BOPE. -GREAT MOVIE BETTER THAN THE FIRST.
Brasilian here: The translation in english subtitles shown here is horrible. I wonder if they just threw it in Google Translate, because... 90% of the time we use slangs, and they missed MOST of them, which means, half the "fun" is gone. Sad reality. Still, glad you enjoyed the movie, man. Try and see if you can find the sequence, called "O Inimigo Agora É Outro". Its more of a political take on corruption, but story-wise, still amazing.

Fun fact, capt nascimento is the same guy that does the voice of the wolf from puss in boots 2
Best movie 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Part 2 man, let’s goooo!
Esse filme é patrimônio nosso.
I don’t know if you take UA-cam recommendations but I’d love to see a reaction to the 2009 film Brothers with Jake Gyllenhaal and Toby Maguire
I’ll keep it in mind!
I'm from Brazil and I've been subbed to your channel for a very long time. Seeing you react to one of the best brazillian movies of all time (to me one of the best movies ever) was a nice surprise. Cheers man
Please react to 2 Filhos de Francisco, it is a true story and I assure you that you will not forget it after watching it.

Cortou a melhor cena, que é do Nascimento descobrindo que é o fornecedor. 4:50
Finally!🎉😂 pls react to part 2 as well
5min15sec It is difficult to explain to a foreigner the courage of these mothers, wives and sisters of criminals in dealing with the local police.
Should watch the Part 2
Rio is a hell and Lisbon is close
Now you must watch part two!
Yes, thats how you end criminal activities.
You look nervous 😂😂
😂
An interesting fact is that this was supposed as a critic to police violence but the people are so full of shit because of everything we have to endure that Cap Nascimento became some kind of hero.
You need to watch Elite Squad 2, is the best!
Tem o TROPA DE ELITE 2😅
Brazil is a country with many different realities and i, who live in southern brazil, cant relate, but the people who live there say that reality is even worse than the movie
Nascimento is a criminal portrayed as some sort of "hero" in this fucked up movie.
-Several things have to be taken into consideration when watching this film:
-It is based on the book by the real Captain Nascimento who has another name.
React to the part 2 of this movie...
Great video, man. I'd recommend you to watch City of God and Carandiru as well.
Bro you need watch Cidade de Deus/ City of God
You will understand better after watching the parte 2.
Its a criticism, not suport of police violence
06:05, your subtitles aren't very great, he said "I need you for the pope mission", not "people mission".
Brasilian here:
The translation in english subtitles shown here is horrible.
It's also about crime, but not as heavy as this one (still heavy, but with a sense of humor).
Watch Elite Squad 2... its crazy too.
