Fun fact: Capitão Nascimento was meant to be portrayed as villainous and unstable as possible so nobody would see him like a hero (and you can clearly see those traits), but he ended up being the favorite character for most people and was (and still is) considered a hero by many.

Fun fact about this movie: the director, José Padilla, kind of wrote this movie to criticize the Brazilian police force, to show that it's a corrupt organization, and that BOPE was a gruesome unit, made just for shooting first, asking later. But he never thought that this movie would make such a huge success not because people agreed with him. BOPE became a respected institution, Captain Nascimento became a national hero, and it rose a wave of indignation among Brazilians, due the lack of security, crimes, robbery and government's lack of CARE about it. Brazil was claiming for justice, and they saw raw justice through Nascimento's team.
BOPE became respected because a lot of brazilians don't understand that what separates a thug from a policemen is the law. You can't call yourself a officer of the law and not uphold it. These people have to advance a lot to achieve get to the level of "an eye for an eye", much less modern ideas of justice. Oh, you robbed a wallet? forget due process, your place is six feet under.

As a Brazilian I gotta say this movie blows most of Hollywood movies out of the water due to its authenticity. No big explosions, no fake morals, no happy ending, just plain truth about the caothic maelstrom Rio de Janeiro state has been spinning into. We, from other places within the country say: " Rio is not for amateurs".

"Cidade de Deus" is overrated to be honest. Auto da Compadecida is great but i don't think foreigners would be able to appreciate it properly. A proper translation would be nearly impossible too.
I watched 2 in the cinema, and in the scene where he knocks the politician out of the car, the crowd watching in the theater went crazy!! Everyone started screaming and applauding! It was beautiful!!

I strongly advise you boys to watch the second one, Tropa De Elite The Enemy Within. It is so good, better than this one (not saying this isn't bad ass on it's own but the second movie really turns it up in terms of corruption).

He likes his job and to some degree he is his job, his wife pressuring him to leave BOPE puts an enormous strain on him and the fight he has with his wife while in uniform is him coming to terms with who he is, an BOPE cop.

This movie was written by a movie director and a Police officer called Rodrigo Pimentel. He's like Captain Nascimento of real life. When he wrote the book that would turn into the movie, he wrote about he's stories and stories of his fiends. This Rodrigo Pimentel is my uncle, so i've heard a lot of stories of him since i was a kid. Tropa de elite is not a True story l, but is a True reality in Rio de Janeiro.

Personally I find it just as good, and it adds more layers to the themes of the story. Also, maybe not sure you noticed it, but the protagonist, Wagner Moura, also voices the wolf in Puss in Boots 2.

Porque o filme mostra a corrupção e podridão da polícia e foge da realidade mostrando um BOPE que não é corrupto (mentira) e um Capitão Nascimento que obviamente nunca existiu e não existe. O que tudo bem, porque é um filme, tem essa liberdade. O que o diretor não esperava é que muitas pessoas iriam ignorar a realidade mostrada e abraçar a parte fantasiosa como verdade.
@@BrunoCoutinho92Eu sempre vi o filme de outra forma, originalmente o protagonista era o Matias, porém o wagner moura roubou a cena e modificaram o filme, se assistir pensando no lado do Matias fica melhor. O Neto era fissurado no Bope ja o matias era apenas um policial comum que fazia faculdade de direito, ele queria se formar e nao seguir carreira, a principio o Matias é um pouco "medroso" e totalmente diferente do Nascimento (só lembrar do tiroteio do inicio do filme que ele tava todo perdido). O Matias era um bom amigo e um bom policial (tanto que a ideia do oculos foi dele) mas o filme vai mostrando ele se transformando no nascimento e em varios momentos o capitão nascimento fala isso (Ele literalmente fala nessa transformação).

Tanto é que uma cena marcante dele e que o povo adora é aquela que ele invade a passeata pela paz e fala que quem financia o crime são os playboys que fumam. E ai eu te pergunto quem ajuda mais o crime, o playboy que fuma um cigarro ou a polícia que recebe arrego pra fazer vista grossa, que vende arma pros caras, sem falar de alguns políticos grandes que tem até fazenda envolvida com tráfico. O filme mostra a corrupção da polícia mas muitos brasileiros ignoram e amam cenas como essa do Matias.
É baseado na história de um capitão de verdade que serviu o bope de verdade. E sim, era para mostrar a brutalidade da força policial, mas também a corrupção do sistema e a força do tráfico de drogas no país. Ou seja uma crítica ao sistema como um todo.

There are so many catchphrases in this movie and the best part is that they became memes or popular expressions because they are in Portuguese. E.g. the captain says he could kill two with one shot and the soldier says he's going to do it, so he says "sit your finger on this fucking thing". In English it doesn't sound or sound cool like in PT_BR. And others were also lost in translation.

Elite Squad is one of the best films of all time. I just wish Jose Padila had more success in Hollywood. Luckily he did produce Narcos with Wagner. Fun fact, for Max Payne 3, Rockstar took inspiration from this and City of God for the Brazil aspect of the story (and Man on Fire for aesthetic). Man if you guys are getting into gritty and violent films... Dragged Across Concrete is one of the most underappreciated films and just hit Netflix (and no.... for those about to come around, liking it doesn't make you a conservative)😊

Your reaction to the film was very nice, it is a pity that the English language is unable to translate the slang and expressions that were used in the film (and we use it in our daily lives here in Brazil). Brazilians are very creative people when it comes to creating these phrases, expressions and slang. Now watch the second film and understand how political powers work in Brazil allied with corruption. These films are a unique work of art!
Not an issue with English. Many things can be adapted, but I think the subs here weren't particularly good. Example right in the beginning: "matar dois coelho com uma porrada só" = "kill two birds with one stone", yet it was translated as if the sharpshooter was afraid of hitting a crook.
What most people don't know is that all the lines in this movie were created by the actors. They didn't have a script with the exact words, they had an idea of what the director wanted... that's why there are too many good lines, cause the actors could say what they were really feeling.
Captain Nascimento is a charismatic character, but he sells fascist ideas, the favelas are something much bigger than what the film shows, they are not just places for cartels, but where an immense population of poor workers lives who have nothing to do with drug trafficking, and with the ''tatics' (torture tatics) of police, another thing: Prohibiting drugs has already proven to be a losing battle, because they are prohibited and it was this reality that prohibition produced, but nobody talks about arms trafficking and how they end up in the hands of drug dealers, I suggest watching elite squad 2, to understand what takes place in the city. Even Nascimento changes his mind.

A fact about this film is that it is almost a documentary. The story is fictional, but it is totally based on real facts, police corruption, drug trafficking in Rio and the daily life of BOPE is exactly what was shown. The second film is basically an exposé, the characters are completely based on real people and events, some people were actually arrested after the film. The director had to move to the US with his family because he suffered several death threats and attacks
I am Brazilian, and I loved the way as you react to this film! I am friend of a real BOPE commander, and this movie is 100% like the real life in Rio! I can understand that there are a lot of Brazilian slangs that you can't translate, but man, except the slangs the subtitles of this movie is so incomplete! They don't translate lots of thinks that's said.

I'm from Brazil and there is something "funny" about this movie: they made it to show how brutal police in RJ is, and how violent Nascimento is... but as the result, everyone in Brazil (but not the extreme left of course) just loved the movie and the Nascimento caracter! We really believe thats what drug dealers and consumers deserv ;) ps: RJ is in a war, since ever! That's why sometimes things seems so extreme!
Never expected for you guys to react to this movie, subscribed immediately. One of the greatest Brazilian heroes! It is hilarious when you consider the fact that Wagner Moura played Nascimento and later on went to play Pablo Escobar in Narcos. Another movie I recommend is O Tempo e o Vento, a Gaúcho (people from the southernmost state of Brazil) epic.

A little addition to the broomstick scene: In the books, they actually set it on fire and when on ambers, "introduced" said broomstick to the boy anal cavity, before the guy decided to talk. That part was considered a tad bit extreme to the movie, and thats why its cut out.
This film supose to talk about bad cops and also bad criminals, to criticize how the police acts in Brazil. But what happened was that a lot of people saw Capitão Nascimento as a hero. But it was not the intention of the crew or the principal actor.

Believe it or not, the actor who played the character Capitão Nascimento said in an interview that the real intention of the film was to show the police as the villains, using the police force against the "poor" drug dealers.
This movie was very controversial back in 2007. In Brazil drugs are illegal, any type of drugs, including marijuana. That have created a war between police force/the state vs the population. Because of the ilegal matter of drug use, every poor comunity or favela thrives with traffic. However, people who live in the favelas or these comunities are 90% inocent, trying to make a living with little or zero resources, so a little kid will sometimes join the drug dealing job, and because they are so heavily armed, the police has no mercy. They don't care who they are, if they have drugs, or guns... they're done. At the same time, the police, and BOPE specially are doing their jobs the best they can, but in the chaos of slums it's either kill or be killed. This movie shows how far the special forces have to go in order to obey the law. They are cold because they have to, but at the same time... many of the things they do are also illegal. To me, the biggest lesson of this movie is the fact that the war agains drugs have failed, deeply. And we as brazilians have to find a way to prevent all this killing from happening, for the poor comunity but also for the brave cops who have to deal with all of this.
I disagree with the part that the war against drug has failed... When the govt actually did smth to "fix it" it in 2011 it was working...but thats not what they want. Nowadays the politicians are not even trying to do smth abt it. It was basically the same as US troops' withdrawal from Afghanistan.
This is a film, but it could be easily a documentary. This is the reality in Brazil and explains why the violence and criminality are a real problem in there.

Fun fact about this movie: the director, José Padilla, kind of wrote this movie to criticize the Brazilian police force, to show that it's a corrupt organization, and that BOPE was a gruesome unit, made just for shooting first, asking later. But he never thought that this movie would make such a huge success not because people agreed with him. BOPE became a respected institution, Captain Nascimento became a national hero, and it rose a wave of indignation among Brazilians, due the lack of security, crimes, robbery and government's lack of CARE about it. Brazil was claiming for justice, and they saw raw justice through Nascimento's team.
BOPE became respected because a lot of brazilians don't understand that what separates a thug from a policemen is the law. You can't call yourself a officer of the law and not uphold it. These people have to advance a lot to achieve get to the level of "an eye for an eye", much less modern ideas of justice.

I watched 2 in the cinema, and in the scene where he knocks the politician out of the car, the crowd watching in the theater went crazy!! Everyone started screaming and applauding! It was beautiful!!

At first we are led to believe Captain Nascimento is stressed because of his work and because he is afraid of dying before retiring, in the end we realize that his stress comes from leaving the job. He likes his job and to some degree he is his job, his wife pressuring him to leave BOPE puts an enormous strain on him and the fight he has with his wife while in uniform is him coming to terms with who he is, an BOPE cop.

This movie was written by a movie director and a Police officer called Rodrigo Pimentel. He's like Captain Nascimento of real life. When he wrote the book that would turn into the movie, he wrote about he's stories and stories of his fiends. This Rodrigo Pimentel is my uncle, so i've heard a lot of stories of him since i was a kid. Tropa de elite is not a True story l, but is a True reality in Rio de Janeiro.

Hope you'll check out the sequel. Personally I find it just as good, and it adds more layers to the themes of the story. Also, maybe not sure you noticed it, but the protagonist, Wagner Moura, also voices the wolf in Puss in Boots 2.

Herói pra direita né. Porque o filme mostra a corrupção e podridão da polícia e foge da realidade mostrando um BOPE que não é corrupto (mentira) e um Capitão Nascimento que obviamente nunca existiu e não existe. O que tudo bem, porque é um filme, tem essa liberdade. O que o diretor não esperava é que muitas pessoas iriam ignorar a realidade mostrada e abraçar a parte fantasiosa como verdade.
@@BrunoCoutinho92Eu sempre vi o filme de outra forma, originalmente o protagonista era o Matias, porém o wagner moura roubou a cena e modificaram o filme, se assistir pensando no lado do Matias fica melhor. O Neto era fissurado no Bope ja o matias era apenas um policial comum que fazia faculdade de direito, ele queria se formar e nao seguir carreira, a principio o Matias é um pouco "medroso" e totalmente diferente do Nascimento (só lembrar do tiroteio do inicio do filme que ele tava todo perdido). O Matias era um bom amigo e um bom policial (tanto que a ideia do oculos foi dele) mas o filme vai mostrando ele se transformando no nascimento e em varios momentos o capitão nascimento fala isso (Ele literalmente fala nessa transformação).

Tanto é que uma cena marcante dele e que o povo adora é aquela que ele invade a passeata pela paz e fala que quem financia o crime são os playboys que fumam. E ai eu te pergunto quem ajuda mais o crime, o playboy que fuma um cigarro ou a polícia que recebe arrego pra fazer vista grossa, que vende arma pros caras, sem falar de alguns políticos grandes que tem até fazenda envolvida com tráfico. O filme mostra a corrupção da polícia mas muitos brasileiros ignoram e amam cenas como essa do Matias.
É baseado na história de um capitão de verdade que serviu o bope de verdade.
E sim, era para mostrar a brutalidade da força policial, mas também a corrupção do sistema e a força do tráfico de drogas no país. Ou seja uma crítica ao sistema como um todo.

There are so many catchphrases in this movie and the best part is that they became memes or popular expressions because they are in Portuguese. E.g. the captain says he could kill two with one shot and the soldier says he's going to do it, so he says "sit your finger on this fucking thing". In English it doesn't sound or sound cool like in PT_BR. And others were also lost in translation.

Elite Squad is one of the best films of all time. I just wish Jose Padila had more success in Hollywood. Luckily he did produce Narcos with Wagner.
Fun fact, for Max Payne 3, Rockstar took inspiration from this and City of God for the Brazil aspect of the story (and Man on Fire for aesthetic).

Not an issue with English. Many things can be adapted, but I think the subs here weren't particularly good. Example right in the beginning: "matar dois coelho com uma porrada só" = "kill two birds with one stone", yet it was translated as if the sharpshooter was afraid of hitting a crook.

What most people don't know is that all the lines in this movie were created by the actors. They didn't have a script with the exact words, they had an idea of what the director wanted... that's why there are too many good lines, cause the actors could say what they were really feeling.
Captain Nascimento is a charismatic character, but he sells fascist ideas, the favelas are something much bigger than what the film shows, they are not just places for cartels, but where an immense population of poor workers lives who have nothing to do with drug trafficking, and with the ''tatics' (torture tatics) of police, another thing: Prohibiting drugs has already proven to be a losing battle, because they are prohibited and it was this reality that prohibition produced, but nobody talks about arms trafficking and how they end up in the hands of drug dealers, I suggest watching elite squad 2, to understand what takes place in the city. Even Nascimento changes his mind.

A fact about this film is that it is almost a documentary. The story is fictional, but it is totally based on real facts, police corruption, drug trafficking in Rio and the daily life of BOPE is exactly what was shown. The second film is basically an exposé, the characters are completely based on real people and events, some people were actually arrested after the film. The director had to move to the US with his family because he suffered several death threats and attacks

I can understand that there are a lot of Brazilian slangs that you can't translate, but man, except the slangs the subtitles of this movie is so incomplete! They don't translate lots of thinks that's said.
Great video guys! I'm from Brazil and there is something "funny" about this movie: they made it to show how brutal police in RJ is, and how violent Nascimento is... but as the result, everyone in Brazil (but not the extreme left of course) just loved the movie and the Nascimento caracter! We really believe thats what drug dealers and consumers deserv ;) ps: RJ is in a war, since ever! That's why sometimes things seems so extreme!
Never expected for you guys to react to this movie, subscribed immediately. One of the greatest Brazilian heroes! It is hilarious when you consider the fact that Wagner Moura played Nascimento and later on went to play Pablo Escobar in Narcos.
Another movie I recommend is O Tempo e o Vento, a Gaúcho (people from the southernmost state of Brazil) epic.

A little addition to the broomstick scene: In the books, they actually set it on fire and when on ambers, "introduced" said broomstick to the boy anal cavity, before the guy decided to talk. That part was considered a tad bit extreme to the movie, and thats why its cut out.

This film supose to talk about bad cops and also bad criminals, to criticize how the police acts in Brazil. But what happened was that a lot of people saw Capitão Nascimento as a hero. But it was not the intention of the crew or the principal actor.

This movie was very controversial back in 2007. In Brazil drugs are illegal, any type of drugs, including marijuana. That have created a war between police force/the state vs the population. Because of the ilegal matter of drug use, every poor comunity or favela thrives with traffic. However, people who live in the favelas or these comunities are 90% inocent, trying to make a living with little or zero resources, so a little kid will sometimes join the drug dealing job, and because they are so heavily armed, the police has no mercy. They don't care who they are, if they have drugs, or guns... they're done. At the same time, the police, and BOPE specially are doing their jobs the best they can, but in the chaos of slums it's either kill or be killed. This movie shows how far the special forces have to go in order to obey the law. They are cold because they have to, but at the same time... many of the things they do are also illegal.
To me, the biggest lesson of this movie is the fact that the war agains drugs have failed, deeply. And we as brazilians have to find a way to prevent all this killing from happening, for the poor comunity but also for the brave cops who have to deal with all of this.

When the govt actually did smth to "fix it" it in 2011 it was working...but thats not what they want.
Nowadays the politicians are not even trying to do smth abt it.
It was basically the same as US troops' withdrawal from Afghanistan.

This is a film, but it could be easily a documentary. This is the reality in Brazil and explains why the violence and criminality are a real problem in there.
