- Authorities in Russia have detained two Russian journalists on charges of extremism, accusing them of working for a banned group founded by the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
The two men - Sergey Karelin and Konstantin Gabov - both deny the charges, and could face years in prison if convicted. They both worked for Deutsche Welle before the channel was banned and expelled from Russia. Navalny's movement is designated by Russian authorities as an "extremist" group, meaning his staff and supporters can face prosecution.
For more on this, we talk to Sergey Lukashevsky. He is the head of the Andrey Saharov Center for human rights in Berlin.

Human rights is the most double standard word in this world.
Why do you think it is the most?

The same, Edward Snowden, who was gifted at luxury apartment in Moscow by the Russian government?)

Lol ...European lacture Russia on freedom of speech And free press😂😂😂
Russia will never listen. Too far gone into a failed state. Russia is beyond help.
In Russia you get prisontime for criticism towards the war in Ukraine. They dont have any freedom of speech. Does a pakistani know anything about europe?
In Russia you get 10 years in jail for being against the "special operation"

Remember Gonzalo Lira? He is dead now! So how dangerous is it for independent journalists in Ukraine?
I followed him, he had health problems for a long time, his health was really bad. He was warned several times to leave, he didnt, so they jailed him for pushing russian disinformation inside Ukraine. He was not bright
He was already very ill. And warned several times to leave
When you got the lungs of a 90 year old chain smoker, you might want to just not push those type of information war, when warned multiple times. Not a bright guy

@@Jezar7Why? Because he is right?
@@Jezar7 europe really sacrifices it’s own values to fight their enemy but then also uses the excuse of “Russia and others are bad” to justify diminishing their own values. Israel does the same, because believing your morally superior gives you that ability to crack down on the basis of your country’s moral superiority. We paint Russia and China as not morally superior so when they crack down we don’t see the hypocrisy as we do from the west.

Lmao bro as a European. I feel insulted really. I mean, obviously DW does nothiing more then sharing opinions, that is not journalism. And there is no place for alternative voices unless in certain settings. Again it is a journalists task to have multiple opinions fight eachother.

We don't have an appreciation for just how sensitive things are for the Germans 😃. I mean look how in the name of journalism "their people" are imprisoned in Russia! 😂 But true to form the Germans must give lip service to their "endeavors" should they run afoul of a complication that endangers the IMAGE they want to maintain for themselves.
There are a lot of independent journalists in Russia, especially among war journalists, but there is one common thing among them, they are pro-Russian. @@LuV2SPDupHave you ever been in Russia?
@claus-not-santa , I've been to Moscow in the late 1980s, a few times. I've been there in 2006 as well. In 2006, I was there after living in the US since 1991, and honestly, I didn't have a good experience. People were very rude and obnoxious. There were nice people as well that I met, but mostly, they were rude. Maybe because of my accent. Originally, I was born in western Ukraine, so I speak Ukrainian and Hungarian. I do speak Russian fluently, but I always had an accent, even when living in the USSR. I've also been to Leningrad, and I visited many places there.
@@LuV2SPDup I was not allowed to visit Eastern Block countries as I have been NATO soldier with highest security class when I was living 5 years in Finland I in 2002 decided to visit St. Petersburg.
I was very disappointed when I came there........in positive way!! NOTHING there was like I thought it should be according to my NATO indoctrination ! After my first visit I started doing a lot of very nice business in Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan and travelled a lot and met many people, both in business and private as I never stayed in hotel, but rented a furnished apartment. When I became 60 I sold my company to 2 of my skilled employees and since that I visit Russia as often as I can as tourist. In summers I use to stay 2-3 months and travel around with my own car. Last trip was 18.732 km in Russia plus 2 times 4.500 km from home and back again. In 2022 I bought a new apartment in Caucasus and use it as base for my travels.
