Yamaguchi kappei was ranma and inuyasha too. In his early career, he voiced many pretty boy characters before comedic roles like ussop. The deep voice he did as Red was more like L from death note too

It's been too long since I played the original game, but was it revealed this early that Reeve was Cait Sith in the original as well? I seem to remember that it took a long ass time until we found out who was the face behind the cat.

The real cool attention to detail in this scene is that if you go back and do Side quest past this chapter, he will start using that voice rather than his older "mature" sounding voice. It's definitely a nice touch they put into the game to make the world feel more alive and customizable to your play experience.

@JH-ok5lx naw, it highlights that his community knows his true character and he finally got to relax and let his guard down to be himself again. Whereas he's been acting like an old veteran in front of the party the entire time. Red XIII is a facade and Nanaki is the real personality.

An easy way to understand and accept that both voices make sense is like this: Red is 48, he is the oldest member in the party, he has lived long enough to accrue knowledge, wisdom and intelligence - this is how he is able to "act" as such. However, biologically, despite his years, he is still young - a teenager, and his hormones beckon him to be playful and excitable. This is his true self, but his experiences and shame over his father broke his confidence and he put on a persona. Upon returning to Cosmo Canyon and the events the therein, he found the confidence to be himself again.
Yeah, he's as bad as Cloud when it comes to self confidence issues. Don't forget, despite seeing his father and grandfather in Cosmo Canyon, he still starts to think he may just be another Sephiroth clone later on in FFVII.
My head canon is that Nanaki was the party member that he gives the Black Materia hence why Cloud was able to convince him to hand it back over. Yuffie, Tifa, Cid, and Vincent would all hesitate to hand it over. (I didn't mention Barrett on purpose.) XD
I really liked the part when he used his Persona again after I landed back in Costa Del Sol and for that side mission which started there. (Won't go into details to not spoil something.)
It’s like reverse dog years. Instead of aging 7 years for every human year, Nanaki ages 1 year for every 3 human years.
Damn someone in UA-cam comments who understand him as a character, that's rare.
His short story in On the Way to a Smile also confirms this.
Guess being captured, tortured and experimented on also does a number in one. Dude is scarred for life, no wonder he does not want to be himself... Funnyly enough, shit goes in the same way for one fellow or another in this train. Maybe dealing with being insecure is a recurrent theme in the story, I wonder.
Kinda funny how Cait Sith looked rather proud upon seeing the poster.
Maybe whoever was controlling him had a hand in making the wanted posters look innacurate.

I do too but in all honesty this voice does fit better with his character on paper, despite being 48 red is 16 and i recall most of the lines describing him as somewhat headstrong and brash which is align more with a kid then a grizzled old man

Yeah, his first voice was what I would have imagined he sounded like when I first played the game. The only thing I will say is that Bugenhagen said that Nanaki was a teen for his race, so in a way he would sound much younger and more innocent. But seriously his mature voice is so much better. His teen voice is jarring coming out of something so strong and fearsome as Red. It's the exact opposite of Fennec from Zootopia.
Sorry red but after Cosmo canyon I won't have you on my team. I just can't stand that voice well he's doing all that cool stuff.

The new voice is jarring upon first hearing it, but I'm slowly getting more used to it. It honestly fits his softer, real personality very well, but dang if Nanaki isn't a good actor.

(but let be honest does count as spoilers if it was an old game) Cait true identity is Reeves Tuesti, another one of President shinra lackeys and is in charge of urban development for shinras electric power company (personally design the mako factory). But went rogue after the fall of sector 7 building in Midgar and created a cat like robot persona Cait Sith to spy (but really) help the avalanche gang (cloud and the others).

What interesting about this version though is that they're actually aware that he MIGHT be working for Shinra as opposed to the original, where they had no idea at all. I haven't made it to that particular part yet as I'm still working my way through this level but I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

I mean, just look up Nanaki's dialogue after they arrive to Cosmo Canyon.
Literally speaks like a child and deals with motivations and lessons that are more commonly used for a child character.
I absolutely adored the fact that they changed the voice to suit his character's development in the story. Though I was still surprised by that fact.
But I loved the fact that the characters chose to call him Nanaki from that point. That's sweet.
And before people mention wisdom and age.
Play FFIX. Vivi and Eiko are two characters filled with wisdom, both are genuine kids... hell... Vivi is more of a toddler.

For many it's the issue that in the OG this "tone"-change was more noticable in its OG language since english or for me german has not that many variations of the same words with which such a change could be depicted.

I personally love his real voice, it fits him really well. I can picture nanaki talking like in the post ff7 novels, fits his dialogue better than the wise voice. The old voice is badass, but the new voice is cute and I like both versions of him..... His reason for not showing his real voice makes sense too, cause the party besides definitely wouldn't have taken him as seriously except for Aerith probably. It's also very accurate because a portion of ff7 rebirth players couldn't take him serious after, so he was right for hiding it 💔He still his old voice in some cases like if he's telling a story or talking to strangers so
This isn't a brand new change either, this was in the original game just lost in translation like many things. FF7 english localization was awful. People complain about things changing in the remake trilogy, but those same people are complaining about this? It makes no sense. If they for some reason didn't include Nanaki's real voice it would have been a huge change in his character arc for seemingly no reason.

I did, I mean, did you not pay attention to his dad issues???? his entire existence is 'trying to prove himself' because he's convinced his dad was 'selfish.' so he wants to be super-brave, like cloud, like barrett, unlike his father. Although little did he know.... Him & Yuffie were the babies of the party (albeit in the original yuffie took more of a backseat.)

It’s going to take me awhile to get used to his real voice tbh. It just feels really jaw dropping hearing the tone drop so much. I’m just wondering why no one even really questions it when he just out of nowhere suddenly talks differently and Barret only is questioning why Nanaki is acting more soft and not asking about his voice change.

I'm finding it hard to swallow cos I really loved red as he was. The gruff voice, the grumpy wisdom, the angry snarls.. not only does his voice change but his entire personality shifts in an instant.. if I was travelling with someone for ages and they did that I'd be like "dude why the fk were you posing this whole time?"

@@CleverGirlAAH yeah it's crazy, it's the first time I've ever seen a character get retconned MID-GAME 😂 I know they were trying to stay true to the original Japanese with the dialect transition but I think the way they handled the shift was poorly done. If Red had stopped just outside Cosmo canyon and had been like "guys I have a confession to make..." and then explained himself and why he'd been acting, it would have a seemed a lot more genuine and easier to understand from audience perspective. I've gotten used to new Red now but he's deffo not as cool as he was.. RIP labratdog
It kinda ruined Red XIII for me, not just because it was such an extreme change to what sounds more like a 10 year old than a teenager, but because that means after all they'd been through Nanaki never trusted his friends enough to show who he really was. Who he was altogether was a lie the whole time as he basically used Cloud and the others to get home.

At this point, I noticed the characters come in pairs: Aerith and Tifa are beautiful, sweet, and tough as nails; Red XIII and Yuffie are teenage warriors that can put on a facade of maturity when need be, but still have a lot of growing up to do; Barret and Cid are older tough guys who curse like sailors and can be quite passionate about their goals; Cloud and Vincent are the androgynous loner mysterious tough guy science experiments; and Cait Sith 1 and Cait Sith 2 are very much alike too.
This comment section is just a bunch of people revealing that they've never actually played the OG FF7 past Midgar.

nah i knew it was coming and still dont like the new voice. i love the OG, but the way they handled it in rebirth just felt off - the party has like no reaction outside of barret with one line, and we've spent over 40 hours with the other voice so the new one just sounds weird and doesnt match the persona we got to know in this version of the story. in the og its only been like 15 hours so its not as weird. the whole cosmo canyon section in rebirth feels rushed and a little off imo, i was expecting way more character development/interaction then what we got.

I really hope in the third FF7R game they make his name "Nanaki" in subtitles and the interface.
Even in OG FF7 it was stated Red was 48 by his species' age but that's equivalent to 15 or 16 in human years. There was actually a dialogue difference with Red XIII before and after cosmo canyon when you recruit Yuffie and chose the wrong dialogue options.

Also a couple of subtle hints in with Aerith in Rebirth when she's alone with Red XIII

I did the same. His new voice ruined Red for me. Couldn't have him in my party anymore. I don't care if that's his real voice and cannon, it's awful. They changed a ton of other cannon stuff, so why not do the same with Red voice? Altering cannon is better in some cases. His "fake voice" was perfect.

My voice changed when I was about 14 to sound more adult and less squeaky. Red doesn't need to sound like a child, especially when he has 50 years of life experience.

Honestly I only found this video because I realised he was putting on a fake voice when he saw Tifa and Areith at the beach. For a brief moment you hear his true voice, and I couldn't stop laughing
Well, he is about 16 years old despite living for about 48 years.
If so, then he’d be equivalent to a 100 year old man by the time he’s 300. Humans age three times faster than his species. However, we’ve seen scenes of where he will be alive and just as energetic 500 years after this game’s story, where he’d thus be equivalent to a 182 and 2/3 year old man (182.67 years old, like 182 years and 8 months old human). 182 years old is too old to be alive, therefore Nanaki’s species at 548 years old would is too old to be alive. How would he still be alive and active once that time comes???

I have mixed feelings about this. Part of me applauds the writers for taking the story in an unexpected direction. But the other part of me is disappointed that they kinda ruined the coolest character in the game...
I find it adorable.
I like how he revealed his true voice to Aerith early when you hear the ??? talking to her in lower junon. I realized it was him at the time, remembering he was biologically like 16 years old in the OG. You can see in this scene that Aerith isn’t surprised here at all
I'll admit, this _does_ reflect how my perception of him changed from the original game after the revelations at Cosmo Canyon 👍

I'm blown away by the game so far. Way way way exceeded my expectations. I'm not really a fan of the voice change though. I know why they did it, but I think they went overboard. He sounds 9, not the equivalent of 16 in catdog years lol. It's definitely going to take some getting used to, because I really liked his original voice. Still though, if the only complaint I have about the game is just a minor nitpick like this, then I'd say the game as a whole is an overwhelming success.
You some very strange 9 year olds. Not every teenager has to be angsty, and Nanaki sounds like a happy-go-lucky teen

But yeah, as jarring as the voice change feels after so long with his Very Serious Adult bit, it makes perfect sense for his character, which always had "Simba trying to be Mufasa" vibes, even in the OG.
If 48 is like the 15 of his species then Naniki’s life span will probably be like 424, comparing to an 80 year old human, so probably more.
You should see the og game's post credits scene to get a better scope on how long his species can live.

Is it still a bit hard to get used to Yes [I'm currently just ending Chapter 10 as we speak]
Still, I feel like both Voices suit the character and I kind of like the fact Red was acting older [even though he's 48 which is 15/16 human years] to try to fit in [it also fits the theme of FF7 with people hiding their true self ]
Also, I think in the 500 Year time skip he's going to have his older voice back again.
So while I understand the hate for this choice I don't mind it really, Reds is a Good boy all the same.
