I like the Night Lords for the same reason I like Frank Horrigan. In an era where a lot of popular IPs are obsessed with trying to make sympathetic villains, it's cathartic to see unrepentant war criminals instead. Also, like you said, they don't fight like space marines and, funny enough, despite being the most brutal chapter, they probably killed the least. Instead of warring with entire planets, they scare planets into compliance. In other words, them being evil doesn't unskin your wife and kids.
I read ADB's Night Lords trilogy. Great Books with interesting characters. And I still fucking hate the Night Lords. A character that is interesting and engaging doesn't make them any less despicable when they get off on torturing people to death. (Yes, I include Talos in that category. "Lesson" my ass.)
I'm an asshole and I love them, adb wrote them and it reminded me of me and my friends sometimes. Not the genocide and murder, but the dark humor and rough housing. Also when we played online games we always tried to find an edge over our opponents even if it meant getting the ban hammer.

Night Lords is proof of how propaganda works when it's done well, and humanises the subject, even when it's about people who flay skin and torture people Eldar are what happens when that propaganda sucks
For me its for two reasons. 1. They're aesthetically awesome with the vamperic/slavic look, along with the lightning accents. 2. They are just fucked up in so many ways, particularly in being the 'masters of fear' yet are probably the biggest cowards of all space marines. Possibly of any faction even (like the Drukari). Basically I love them for being baby bitch edge lords. Theyre a great Grimdark faction for such heinous crimes but have real character in sadness and wanted honour.
Night Lords are interesting because they kind of really suck at the actual job of being a space marine. Like, the way they operate, why even bother making most of them supersoldiers? Except Sevatar; It's almost like 95% of the legion's actual martial skill got crammed into him and him alone.
Definitely a combination of Night Lord battle doctrine, Gendor Skraivok deliberately recruiting kids who have no business becoming Space Marines, and Konrad inability/unwillingness to fix things. If Night Lords were fighting the kind of battles the others legions were doing at the time (massive wars against mighty empires), I feel a lot of those inferior Marines would have been filtered out. You don't need to be superhuman in order to brutalize a bunch of terrified human civvies, but it definitely helps.
I disagree the night lords had a role to play, they make amazing enforcers one of the only legions that made worlds comply from just the word they were entering the system
@@Mkrause762yes but plenty of planets were willing to fight the legions. No world wanted to fight the Night Lords. Their name alone would make worlds surrender.
One of my favorite things about the night lords is that they have an ego about themselves or at least some weird sense of honor. Like in First Heretic when they see the Gal Vorbak for the first time they're openly revulsed by them. Like "we play at being monsters, but you sick freaks actually became monsters"
I appreciate night lords for being one the most interesting traitor legions, they were in a way the first traitor by destroying nostramo. As well as the fact that there the only legion with a primarch showing a mental illness/ mental decay

She wanted a VIII Legion t-shirt and they were out. She leaned over, stared him in the eye, and sneered, "Because Konrad Curze was an unappreciated genius who did nothing wrong." The poor guy nearly passed out.
I was moved by Talos's conviction, and impressed by both their effectiveness during The Crusade, as well as their underdog status as a traitor legion. For this reason I play them on the tabletop. Edit: The Night Lords Chaos Lord in the Morvenn Vahl book is named Kol Rakul, The Death of Saints. His name in Nostroman likely means Cold and Cruel. It is also worth noting that titles among The Night Lords are either self-imposed, or ironic, so either Kol gave himself the title as he has some history with The Argent Shroud, or he has ran from every battle against The Sororitas lol.
Personally I feel like part of the reason Night Lords are liked so much is because I feel like either consciousnessly or subconsciously a lot of people realize that if Space Marines ever became real they would most likely be like the Night Lords. Like just think, if you took a child that was forced through barbaric trials by combat that kill 99% of grown men and gave them literal superhuman abilities and conditioning to where they basically only fully understand combat you're likely not gonna get the philosophical Blood Angels, reasonable Ultramarines, or caring Salamanders, you're probably gonna end up with the opportunistic, violence-driven, and power-obsessed Night Lords.
If you guys haven't listened to the Night Lords omnibus audiobook version read by Andrew Wincott you should give it a listen. He gets the slavic accent of our beloved skitzo batboys just right. 4:30 Listen man I look at The Wrath cannibalize the remnants of a battlefield, using the corpse bits for all kinds of things, and I go "Hell yeah I love these living blenders."
I'm not a huge night lords fan per say, but they do interest me. Blood Angels were my first army so there is bias in what i say. But the thing I came to love about the Blood Angels is how they choose to rise above their lesser instincts. To choose to struggle against the temptation to give in, and to win through force of will. The night lords interest me as they feel like an opposite, where they blood angels are optimistic the night lords are pessimistic. How Konrad and Sanguinis viewed their foresight shows is most succinctly. Their contrast is far more interesting to me compared to say the world eaters / angron and the blood angels / Sanguinis.
Neat point. I do hate that it seems that Blood Angels often get used as “generic dickhead marines who get cacked” in a lot of non Blood Angel stories since they are an interesting chapter to me.
The nightlord fans that weird me out the most are the girl the are down bad for Konrad himself (I assume there are guys as well, I just have not meet them). Like what can you find sexy about a man who so meticulously sews together the flayed skin of his victims that he would probably hunt down specific worlds to get "just the right texture/color" for his quilt?
It’s a fantasy of a dangerous man a powerful and in control confident man. A man who could and would rip the world apart for what he believes in. And what if that man… decides to love her and made an exception? The appeal is basically what if this dangerous edgy well spoken and philosophical man decided I was special enough to not harm. But that’s all just my best guess. You could try asking them yourself and see if you survive. 🙂😆
When Savitar was being pressured by his friends to take revenge for the Nighthaunter's wounding, he asked politely if they would change their minds and run away instead of dying pointlessly. They politely disagreed, and so he spaced them. On the spot, with no warning. The one guy who noticed and got away in time, Savitar let live because that's behavior he personally finds intelligent and should be rewarded. Ngl I fell a little bit in love with the Nightlords on the spot. They're just the worst but it's very entertaining Thousands of year of constant betrayal breeds some very crafty fellas
They have the coolest color scheme in the setting, don't @ me + I find them relatable in some personal aspects(not the edgy murder and torture is good shit) + being the thing that goes bump in the night is cool as fuck.
Answer before watching: 1. Primarch was right about everything, and has an end to his story. 2. God-tier writing on the omnibus, you can't dislike the Night Lords after reading it. 3. By far most humane and ethical Legion (during crusade) 4. Insanely high non chaos/non corrupted (aside from raptors) possibly reunited warband/legion under Decimus if it ever came to fruition.
Fun characters to explore, especially from the perspective of the Great Crusade. Wrapping my mind around the motivations of loyalists/blackshield Night Lords has been interesting.
They’re one of my favourite traitors, they seem unapologetically evil - yes - but not the same as Chaos. The don’t necessarily revel in it, but they just simply don’t care. Plus they look badass and have a unique social structure
Iron Warrior here. The reason for why I like the Night Lords, is that they (like us) haven't changed. Remember the Luna Wolves? They were cool! But then they became the Sons of Horus and turned kinda cringe ... and I don't even know what they think they are doing these days. The point is, they had it, but then they lost it! The Night Lords have remained true to themselves. They are not "stupid evil". Unlike say the Word Bearers, the Night Lords never drank the Kool Aid. They are not high on copium ( or Warp Dust, like the Emperor's Children). Using guerilla tactics when you are fighting a war of attrition against an empire with superior logistics and almost limitless manpower, is not "cowardly", it is just common sense. It is what you do if you want to win ... not to mention survive!
I always had the idea of a Nightlord Warband going on killing sprees on Imperial Worlds as the idea of mercy kills. They slaughter the people because they know the dream the Emperor had is dead and the people are the reason for it. They wish not the people to live in Imperium as the dream is dead.
I like them because they were the only legion to both have their primarch hate them and have that feeling be mutual. They were never shown any love, respect, decency, or honor and now they are incapable of showing those things. Nightlords do the shit that chaos likes while also hating chaos. They have no real plans on making things better, they want these huge ideas to come to pass, they are both violent and depraved, but never on behalf of someone else. Nightlords exists purely for nightlords and and really don't care what people say about how underhanded and evil they are. They know exactly what they are and don't bother to lie to themselves about it, and characters like that are decently uncommon in the universe where every single faction has some sob story to justify using lobotomized slave cyborgs as a punch clock
Let me take a crack at it as an outsider. Konrad Curze, from the summary videos I remember addressing him, seems like Batman if the joker's, "We're not so different." motif was right. And now there are a bunch of 'mini' corrupted batmen running around the galaxy doing "hot girl shit".
Heh, ADB made people like Night Lords with his Omnibus) Talos was a baddie but with goals, and every other significant character in this series was nicely presented. I really like second book, when Talos decides to hop on former NL's battleship and Huron and his warband portrayed as absolute chaos degenerates (shit and blood everywhere, fully corrupted navigator). Even Exalted was not a totally chaos depraved demon-monster until the very end
I have a night lord character who got kicked out of the night lords for killing people to fast. He’s an incredibly skilled swordsman who has a gene seed mutation that made him stupidly fast even compared to space marines. He was kicked out because he took an abnormal approach to causing fear. He attempts to cause fear through a sheer efficiency. If he’s done his job right the only thing you’ll know is that something took this guys head off so fast you couldn’t perceive it and that it’s coming for you next.
Oh so psychopathic spacemarines is weird but nuns with bdsm gear and have bdsm slaves isnt weird. Also i have a tyranid and skaven army because i have hamsters

"The Night Lords committed a war crime!"
"Lol. Yep."
Uzas was a great character. His lucid moments were fucking saaad in the best way possible
"Time to hide", double meaning? If the Night Lords are around theres sure some flaying coming around.
"...But I can fix him!"
I bet they wish they were Steven
Violent and dangerous men appeal to women lmao
It’s a fantasy of a dangerous man a powerful and in control confident man. A man who could and would rip the world apart for what he believes in. And what if that man… decides to love her and made an exception?
The appeal is basically what if this dangerous edgy well spoken and philosophical man decided I was special enough to not harm.
But that’s all just my best guess. You could try asking them yourself and see if you survive. 🙂😆
he is Drakula
Personally I just love their design.
Pure drip.
Night Lords are the “hold my beer” legion.
part of my love for the Night Lords is how much they remind me of Starscream a lot of them are cowardly and conniving just like him
Hit the nail on the head. The 8th legion are conniving little bastards and we love them for it.
Man, I’m a Blood Angel and Night Lord fan. Why you gotta hurt me like this?
Strong case of fanbase Stockholm syndrome myself included hail Decimus
get out of my walls dude. only i am allowed in there.
Some times people like the heel faction. Personally, I like the "good guy" chapters like the Raven Guard. Beaks for life haters! lol
Holy shit, another beaky boi fan?
In this economy!?! LETS GO!
They're just the worst but it's very entertaining
Thousands of year of constant betrayal breeds some very crafty fellas
AVE DOMINUS NOX!
" We have come for you"
skinningpits are a cool concept. fun for the whole family
They have the coolest color scheme in the setting, don't @ me + I find them relatable in some personal aspects(not the edgy murder and torture is good shit) + being the thing that goes bump in the night is cool as fuck.
Answer before watching:
1. Primarch was right about everything, and has an end to his story.
2. God-tier writing on the omnibus, you can't dislike the Night Lords after reading it.
3. By far most humane and ethical Legion (during crusade)
4. Insanely high non chaos/non corrupted (aside from raptors) possibly reunited warband/legion under Decimus if it ever came to fruition.
5. Sevatar
i’m not a huge fan of the night lords. but i am a huge fan of arthur talking about the night lords
Fun characters to explore, especially from the perspective of the Great Crusade. Wrapping my mind around the motivations of loyalists/blackshield Night Lords has been interesting.
The Night Lords Trilogy novels, them being prolly the best Chaos books. That's all.
They’re one of my favourite traitors, they seem unapologetically evil - yes - but not the same as Chaos. The don’t necessarily revel in it, but they just simply don’t care. Plus they look badass and have a unique social structure
Lord of the Night is probably one of the best Night Lord novels, 1 Night Lord crash lands on a hive world. Antics ensue.
As a Carcharodons fan reading Red Tithe really made me like the Night Lords
"up to hot girl shit" is how I describe Honsou when people ask
Imma gunma writa me a night lords booke
I see my beloved dark angles “abandoning” an “important battle” to slay the *redacted* and the only copium I’m huffing is “for the Emperor”
11:20 so they're like the White scars but Traitor.
(In the sense that lore youtubers love them but no one really paints them)
Holy cow this narration goes up and down like a roller coaster with a jazz tempo. Level it out.
I fantasize about night lords when I play my deathwatch
I always had the idea of a Nightlord Warband going on killing sprees on Imperial Worlds as the idea of mercy kills. They slaughter the people because they know the dream the Emperor had is dead and the people are the reason for it. They wish not the people to live in Imperium as the dream is dead.
If an Affliction shirt was a space marine chapter, it would be the Night Lords.
Talos: I will burn every man, woman and child so the smoke from the funeral pyres eclipses the sun.
Mr. Bones: It's beautiful
Now you should do blood angels slander
when u mentioned talos's speech, why is the pic u chose so fuckin funny with those 2 dots on the eye lenses making it look like hes cross eyed🤣🤣🤣
Cause they're just silly little guys trying to get a little treat
“That’s not even a name; that’s a sentence!” 😂😂😂
Great video as always. Please do one for us Word Bearers fans. Argel Tal and Kharn are bros for life.
In a universe where everyone is bad, why not be the worst?
There is freedom in being an unapologetic monster way before anyone had to pick sides or become a Chaos sell out to be an actual menace.
The Emperor of Mankind really thought that he should make a legion completely dedicated to terrorism. Also wondered why they decided to join Chaos.
We need to add this to the lexicon of painting miniatures...scrote coat x
I like the skull faces on the helmets, plus terror tactics are both fun and funny, and screw the chaos gods
