Aye! Oi! Avast ye, Foolish Mortals! If you're enjoying this lesson, you should check out the top 10 pirates list I made, here: ua-cam.com/video/1PKDWvIHdfI/v-deo.html EDIT: I feel like a lot of you are interpreting the step "ACT drunk" as "BE drunk." While it might lend some authenticity to the stumble and slurred speech, it would definitely delay your thought process (which is not what an actor wants), and would not be the most responsible behaviour besides. Disclaimer aside, keep careful ears on each of the steps, and have fun! P.P.S. Fun fact: Jack walks like that because he has "sea legs" not because he's drunk. Sea legs are what happens when your on the boat to long to counteract the waves.
@Tory Lanez Wah! That IS interesting!! Although, it’s funny to think why they wouldn’t have done that to anyone other than Jack. Or maybe he’s drunker and sea-leggier than everyone else. Still, so fun to think people would swagger because they’re too used to the ocean rocking…
@@TheVOWizard he really does. He's always been a great actor and really gets into his characters the little details like the sea walk are perfect. The scene where he fell down the stairs in the 3rd movie i think it was was actually not scripted or at least that's what I've heard.
@@TheVOWizard Jack also was effected by sun poisoning when he was left for dead on an island. Plus that detail was all Johnny's idea so that's why it's just him.
Jack actually only walks like that on land, when he's on a ship, he's perfectly stable from his years at sea, he had developed sea legs, making him lose balance when on land
@Josh Yeah, someone commented this a while back if you read up. Fascinating. I mean, not a huge challenge in the acting, but such an odd and fun phenomenon, “sea legs.” I’m more intrigued, in retrospect, that he fights and escapes so well on land with such compromised balance! 🧐😯
Sea legs can't be a real thing. You can have land legs, for land is constantly solid. You couldn't possibly get used to the rock of a ship unless you where in and indoor wave pool set up where ever single wave is the exact same. The seas constantly change and waves crash against one another, there is no constant singular movement, but millions of random unidirectional movement. Soon as youd get used to the rock of your ship, it changes

@No Apology Productions Hey, thank you so much for leaving this!! I’m always very eager to hear if how I do things helps anyone, and I often wonder if making these videos is useful for anything! XD Comments like these let me know that you are out there looking for ways to get closer to certain voices. Happy to meet you, and I’m very happy to have helped you get closer to Jack’s voice.

Ha! It probably does. Just gravel the voice down a bit and slur the speech. Still always helps to get into character, which is tricky for many. But I DO agree that the Aussies have a leg up, like the Brits do. XD
It definitely should make a difference. His accent is British, welsh, a bit of American because of Johnnys natural voice, and a fair amount of Australian
Currently preparing for a pirate DND campaign with a very Jack Sparrow-esque character, and my DM demanded I do the whole persona; voice, mannerisms, everything lmao. Thanks for the tips, mate!
Hah! Well then I made the right video for you! Has the campaign started yet, and how are you going? I’d love to hear progress. A Sparrow type character in game would be just SUCH an agent for chaos… XD
Excellent! well done, sir! As someone who has performed as Captain Jack for over 15 years, I can attest you hit all the key points to doing the voice, coupled with the gestures. Wish I had seen this back in 2003, but still nice to see it now. :)

@@TheVOWizard no problem and do your thing I may try a few voice impressions if I can get over this hang over . Thank you as well enjoyed it very much take care
Could, slightly, but as the video states, even Depp espouses that he only did a rough, playful homage to Richards. A much more faithful Keith Richards would take time and study specific to him, rather than an approximate copy of a copy, you know?
@New change unlisted_viewer Thanks so much for that!! Pretty much what I was going for: Just something fun with the wand, and a magic feel just for some flavour as we’re doing voices together. This is about my favourite thing to do, so it makes me very happy when people like you come along for the ride. :) :)
Currently watching pirates of the carribean:on stranger tids and watching this at the same time, been trying to learn a jack sparrow impression and just about an hour of trying Im finally geting the hang of it. The video really helped, love the vid❤❤
Thank you so much for commenting! You start a channel with a pretty niche idea and doubt and wonder if and why anyone would watch it, and then something like this comes through. Can I ask what you’re learning the voice FOR? I always love knowing why people learn voices.
He got his a lot of his impersonation from Richard E. Grant from a movie called Withnail and I. You’ll see so much similarities, it’s like watching some british guy who looks nothing like Depp, sound exactly like Depp, and Watching Depp is like watching his version of Richard E. Grant in Withnail and I.
@John Dough Hey, thanks for that! Yeah, I’ll have to go watch Withnail and I now…! Lol. That’s good backhistory. I always love to know where inspiration for impressions come from. I have my own, but it’s always FASCINATING to see where other people get it!
@tim van gestel Well that is some big and welcome praise. Thank you! I never know if I’ve done these well until people let me know. :) Do you do voices?
@Amelia Chamberlain Thanks a bunch!! My computer is busted and I’m building a new one, but I have designs on new/more videos when I’m back in business… 😊😉👏

Doing this specifically for d&d yet people say I'm pretty spot on however I can tell the difference between inflections and whatnot so I've come here better my voice
@Robert Pirtle Well I’m excited and honoured to try and help! Have you noticed any improvement personally? If they all enjoy it anyway, then it will shake out in the wash, but how YOU feel about it is important. What do you think is missing or off? And is it covered here?
@Favorite Moovies Thanks for watching, and keep practicing!! At request, I’m going to release a few videos on some of the techniques more specifically to help with the bigger videos. Also, please feel free to suggest away; especially if you feel I could teach you something helpful more specifically! :)
Aw man. I haven’t made any videos in some time, but I am hoping to make some more in the near future. I’d certainly put Barbossa on the list, as you’re right; He has a delicious character accent and affectations. Thank you for suggesting!!
@Axel Aw yeah? I didn't walk on my toes in the video, but I'll try it. I just imagine constantly losing balance left and right, and quickly correcting. Also, acting like everything is usually blurry. Lol. And thanks for the watch.
This is Soo good man 👍 oh my god, follow, like and all notification right away. Omg, I'm even going to break this down cause I'm all taken by this! Sizzle ma shizle màtè! (Sorry, just felt like a good startup line for the voice of Mr. Sparrow! 😂) 1. Video quality - Straight away, you could feel that this was a good recording 2. Content - Intro, small summary, a lot of good tips and very humble closing statement first regarding the actual content and then information how anyone who see's this can support you and your channel! Not to long so you feel like skipping it either in the beginning or the end. 3. The. Editing.. O.M.G... (Said slowly thinking that it's a high school teen cheerleader, that learns she's now head cheerleader instead of Ashley P. - This is how this was said in my mind and hopefully now yours, might be unimportant but a bit of fun never hurts. 😉) - Editing was so professional, all of it had purpose, timing and length was on point, extra visual information actually added so much value to the original audiovisual content, placement was top notch, size perfect and most importantly: The extra visuals was matching the original content of the video. So professional, great job mate! Easily scores 10/10 (You must be a killer at making PowerPoints. 😀) 4. External Visual Media - Perfect length to all clips added and timed perfectly 5. Production - You make it look so easy, like you're just talking about something someone asked but never losing track. It doesn't feel like you're scripted and i don't know if you're following one or not. Whatever it is you're doing, you're doing it right. 6. Educational skill - The buildup of the character, the voice, Jack's nuance, details, speech, characteristics, language, grammar, et cetera. I could go on and on here.. It was interesting, superb flow and easy to follow, Really good! 7. Overall - So great, i do this kind of thing now and then when I come across content that's really good and i like. Every single time I've done it i always had at least a couple of notes where i critique parts that i thought might help the creator. But in your case, nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Silch. Null. Nothing... ☺️ Thank you Soo much again for this great content, I'm looking forward to go through your other content but especially see how you're going to evolve and grow with time! You have something good here and i really hope you'll keep on creating more content. I'm stunned, amazing man! 💪😀👍 Tale care and good luck 🤞
Thank you so much for taking the time to do a breakdown, and such an entertaining one to read! 🤣 I’m very happy you liked it. I’m sorry it’s been so long, but life has taken over and I have NOT been checking videos or comments. But this was lovely. I haven’t made any videos recently, but I hope to again soon! And I always feel like there is room for improvement, such as a better camera or production value, but I thank you for pointing out the things which take hard work to do, and not “negatively no effort comment bombing” as some people like to do! I hope to see you again when I get back up and going again, and thank you again for your kind words and effort. :)
@Cameron Vermaak I hide myself away VERY well when I make these videos... 🤣🤣🤣🤣 But I do tend to shamelessly break out the full bodied impressions when summoned to...
I also feellike if you don't know what sea legs are, that that way you walk when you're 90% asleep but have to respond to a non emergency in the house, and your motor system isn't quite in sync with your balance.. great way to figure the walk. Drunk is another descriptorbut there are some who can't or shouldn't figure that one out.
XD I didn’t go all in on the science of it: I just thought a quick “sea legs” descript (which is what many argue he’s got as opposed to constant inebriation) would do to get the “off balance” thing going enough to get people in the character or mindset. Too pedantic and people tend to tune out, unless we were doing a full on character history/motivation breakdown. :)
@BradLad56 Yep! That’s the latch phrase I describe in each of my videos, including this one. Latch phrase is different for everyone, and I always have my favourites. ☺️
But I think you missed one thing to cover, how does he shake his voice in a grumbly way? It's very complicated to imitate and is the most defining feature of his voice like when he says "indeed"
That’s a good add. I think I had counted that as covered in one of the breakdowns I did in there, but maybe a couple of these videos need a 2024 update!! Thanks for digging into that one!
@_ Bakesuta! _ Ha! Good eye! I’m looking at a wand upgrade here pretty soon. Maybe even a full on staff!! And I’m a firm believer that everyone can do a form of every voice, but some of us are able to get closer than others due to how our vocal chords are physically made up. Sometimes due to gender. :)
@Anmol Daglaik Hey, thanks swabbie!! Happy to have you stop by, and welcome. I'm proud to have made a lesson you like. Who else are you into? Should I carry the lessons on with another character?
@Benjamin Naman Ooh, if I caught you after the party, let me know how it went! I’m eager to know if the voice came out like you wanted! Capt’n Jack’s such a fun character to play.

@Pemo Exactly. Just trying to get people to get the practice of that mouth movement to matching the sound. Surprisingly hard for a lot of Americans. And yeah, it’s so easy to just stick that tongue to the top of your mouth and just roll the “ay” sound into the N and skip the D altogether. So fascinating…

@Elle Belle I haven’t done much with his voice outside of Jack, but the more Pirates movies he does, the more I find Jack bleeds into his voice, and the more he carries it into other roles… XD If I get to doing his voice, I promise I’ll make a video on it. And thanks for asking! :)
@KlassyKat45 I CAN do Keanu. He’s actually on the list of videos to make. I’m just now rebuilding my computer after it died (hence no videos), and should be back to it with a new format soon. Maybe I’ll start with ol’ Keanu!!
@hereforselgomez I believe EVERYONE can get to the voice they're after. Your version may be a bit higher than the tradition, but you can easily adopt all of the nuances of the character, like the walk, facial quirks, etc. and aside from the growls, Sparrow speaks up often enough, so a high voice won't seem as odd as on someone like Sam Elliott or Morgan Freeman. Make sense? Let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for stopping and watching! 😄
@Yusuf Thaarick I’m not at all the best Arnold there is out there, but I could definitely teach the ideas and techniques behind the voice. Are you enjoying these lessons? Is this the direction you’d like to see the channel focus on?
Hey, that’s a massive compliment as a huge D&D fan. I’ve been trying to include a bit of D&D in the content, but even if this just helps with voices in game, I did what I set out to do. :) Hope you have a good campaign with it!!
@Shadow_Entity I did suggest something like this in the episode, but I wanted to maintain that the voice is completely doable without intoxication: And if that IS your jam, to drink and do voices responsibly… 🤣
@IceMage LOL! I've never used it in game, but I happily would if they situation ever arose. I did a lot of Atlas RP and famous character RP is generally frowned upon. XD
@@TheVOWizard there's a UA-camr named RobRaven who's like a cosplayer/Voice actor/gamer. Anyways he plays "Sea of Thieves" an online pirate game and he does a fairly good job at roleplaying Capitan Jack Sparrow as he plunders the seas.
@Jen Woodard Hey there! Interesting question, and not the first time I’ve heard it! I should devise some ways ladies can get a bit closer to voices in traditionally male registers. There must be tricks, including lowering/widening your range, but I don’t teach singing, so can’t instruct on that. Might try and make a video on what I come up with. Are you after Jack specifically?
@@TheVOWizard Yes I am after Jack specifically. What I found that helps the most is just practice in general. Thanks a lot for making this video and also for taking the time to go through all the comments and such. :)
@OnlyChampion Of course! Naturally, depending on the octaves/pitch your voice rests in, and can reach, will affect your ability to match the original, but the mannerisms and affectations in the voice can be mimicked by anyone.
@Tommy Davis Thanks for this! I love to teach, where I can. It may be hard to type: Would you enjoy, or find it useful, if I made a video on the techniques themselves, not just the voice qualities? Go further into HOW to make those noises a little more thoroughly?

@Heather Lally Avast, mate. Welp, here be me philosophy on the matter: I be holdin’ no illusions as to the naaaatural timbre of the varied human voice, especially being a sexually dimorphous species, wherein our parts aren’t all bein’ the same, if ye take my meanin’. The different larynxes will definitely be playin’ a part in physically not bein’ able to reproduce sounds or tones exactly when out of our ranges (though I be not convinced that it can’t be trained, even between genders…!). I know not how to train that range, but I always encourage people try the savviest approximation of the voice they can muster and practice mostly gettin’ the character down. Then go tryin’ ta drop yer octaves, if be ye so inclined… -Capn’ VO.
@@nimalanv971 Dammit, you’re probably right. That’s probably why he hasn’t even bothered to notice…!! Let me make the change when I hit my computer tonight. Then all should be right again… And thank you for this service.
@Darth Calculus So, there are lots of ways to find it, but I find in that research and “soak in the character” phase I talk about that a lot of it comes from there. Slide your voice higher if it sounds too low. Even if you’re not doing the inflections, just slide your pitch higher or lower to match his, and then start in on the other stuff. Especially if that’s where you’re finding trouble. Also, don’t be afraid to change the pitch mid-voice! We’re all humans, and not locked to one note! But listen and experiment. Test pitches until they feel/sound right.
@@darthcalculus6002 Yeah of course! And please let me know if it works for you. I like being around for questions, and want to help everyone get the voice coming out that they want to get out. :)

@Saigo the Animator Ha. You laugh, but my answer is yes. Anything you can do to get a good case study is worthwhile for the voice. Except in this case, in which he is Johnny, and not Jack… XD
Yes! So, same steps. All of our throats work similarly, but there may be some… octave variation… XD Like, you can still capture the mannerisms and vocal affectations and accent, but it will sound higher. Same as if I was trying to do, like… Drew Barrymore. I can do her little lisp and do her facial features, but I’ll sound very low comparatively. But people should know who I’m doing if I do everything else right. XD
@andrew If you’re having trouble, mate, that’s what these videos are for! Are you saying doing voices in general is hard, or is there a certain thing hanging you up with this one?
@andrew Well, if you have any specific questions, I’m happy to suggest what I know. Otherwise it’s often just practise and time. Sometimes it takes me a good while before I’m truly happy with a voice.

I feel like being an Australian makes doin Jack a hell of a lot easier. We just typically drawl n mumble n drop vowels as it is
Ha! It probably does. Just gravel the voice down a bit and slur the speech. Still always helps to get into character, which is tricky for many. But I DO agree that the Aussies have a leg up, like the Brits do. XD
exactly i worked it out for myself

My best character, hands down!!! Just genius performance 👏
Slightly confusing pronouns, but thank you!! 😂😂😂
This could also work for Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones!
Could, slightly, but as the video states, even Depp espouses that he only did a rough, playful homage to Richards. A much more faithful Keith Richards would take time and study specific to him, rather than an approximate copy of a copy, you know?
I LOVE the wand bit
It really does feel like magic becuase his impression is so good!
@New change unlisted_viewer Thanks so much for that!! Pretty much what I was going for: Just something fun with the wand, and a magic feel just for some flavour as we’re doing voices together. Thank you so much for commenting! You start a channel with a pretty niche idea and doubt and wonder if and why anyone would watch it, and then something like this comes through. Can I ask what you’re learning the voice FOR? I always love knowing why people learn voices.
watching someone else do it make you realize how not so natural or easy it is to be him Gosh we take Johnny Depp for granted

Sizzle ma shizle màtè! (Sorry, just felt like a good startup line for the voice of Mr. Sparrow! 😂)
1. Video quality - Straight away, you could feel that this was a good recording
4. External Visual Media - Perfect length to all clips added and timed perfectly
Nada. Zip. Zero. Silch. Null. Nothing... ☺️
Thank you Soo much again for this great content, I'm looking forward to go through your other content but especially see how you're going to evolve and grow with time! You have something good here and i really hope you'll keep on creating more content.

I’m sorry it’s been so long, but life has taken over and I have NOT been checking videos or comments. But this was lovely. I haven’t made any videos recently, but I hope to again soon! I hope to see you again when I get back up and going again, and thank you again for your kind words and effort. :)

I've found when trying to do accents, it's best to have some trigger words or sentences that allow you to slip into them easily.

@@TheVOWizard Thank you so much I’ll try it!
@@darthcalculus6002 Yeah of course! And please let me know if it works for you. I like being around for questions, and want to help everyone get the voice coming out that they want to get out. :)
@@TheVOWizard I'm gonna be honest I don't think my voice is deep enough for this. Thanks for the help though! I even watched a few clips and repeated like you said not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Oh forgot to put some growl lol. Let me try some more.
CAPTAIN
@The strawberry sisters I don’t see your ship… “Captain…” 😅😂
Does interviews include clips of the ongoing amber heard trial
@Saigo the Animator Ha. You laugh, but my answer is yes. Anything you can do to get a good case study is worthwhile for the voice. Except in this case, in which he is Johnny, and not Jack… XD
Now how to mimic this as a woman playing a woman pirate based on Jack Sparrow...
XD
I’m British lol
@DeathSnake14 Eyyyyyy leg up. And how’s your Cap’n Jack Sparrow?
I am from India
@Vinod kumar I am from California, but I'm living in Australia at the moment.
This is hard to do
@andrew If you’re having trouble, mate, that’s what these videos are for! Are you saying doing voices in general is hard, or is there a certain thing hanging you up with this one?
It's just what his voice sounds like I can't do it I can do the accent and everything thing else except for what he sounds like
@andrew Well, if you have any specific questions, I’m happy to suggest what I know. Otherwise it’s often just practise and time. Sometimes it takes me a good while before I’m truly happy with a voice.
Fake, he didn't type in "Captain Jack Sparrow" and instead he typed in "Jack Sparrow".
@Eron Plays ROBLOX & More Dammit, someone else pointed this out too, and I haven’t gone and changed it. Shamed that I didn’t get it right in the first place!!
you forgot to mention to speak like a british sailor accent :( MAte
Did I?? Well, damn… Speak like a British sailor!! Lol! Nah, sailor wouldn’t do the trick, I reckon. You’d get closer with a Keith Richards imitation going as a pirate on Halloween! Give it a shot. 🤣
