I always thought Ray Graffia was the standout of this group and here he's relegated to singing backup. He had a wonderful voice (maybe still does!) and wrote some of their better songs.

One of my favorite musical groups as a teen, and well beyond, was "The Electric Flag". This blues, rock, soul group had a band member named Nick Gravenites. Gravenites wrote "Groovin' is Easy", which was first released on the album "A Long Time Comin' " You all should have a listen to a much better rendition of a great song!
Despite Jimmy Dean's praise of Mike Douglas' director, it's unfortunate that the choice was made to add all the psychedelic effects to showcase the group's biggest hit -- a song that was romantic, not psychedelic -- but the decision was made to attempt to appear hip. I see the band did the same thing, wearing briefly trendy clothes to perform what is actually a timeless track which speaks to and for the heart as eloquently today as yesterday. .
I could listen to this song over and over again it could be top ten hit even today it haunts one's feelings of love and regret and maybe hope of returning one day
The Mike Douglas Show was on in the late afternoons - audience was mainly housewives - the psychedelic effects were prolly not the best choice and this wasn't a psychedelic band anyway. Mike Douglas had everyone on his show at one time or another and was always, always respectful and encouraging to them. He had been a singer himself during the big band era.
My band… The Field of Content, opened for them in the 60’s, at the Indiana, PA, “Red Rooster”. They were great! Sounded just like their recordings… which didn’t always happen with groups we opened for, back then.
HEY!!!!!!!! I just realized that it's Billy on drums on this Douglas clip. Ray is still there, so that means that the big blow-up hadn't yet happened that resulted in Ray quitting. Bill's drumming certainly added solidity, even though he joined after the hits stopped coming. EXCEPT..... I think Bill's lead vocal on "Barbara, I Love You" made it one of the best records the NC6 recorded...even though Ray had left and wasn't on the recording. The harmony vocal parts I used to think were Ray on "Barbara" are actually Gary Alexander (from the Association who also helped arrange the song in some yet-to-be-revealed way).
Long story re my departure - for another time, but thanks for the kind words and here's a link to one from '68, when I still was active: ua-cam.com/video/U2NbmFcEB90/v-deo.html. Final note is that the band formed again in 1988 and I have been part of the "reformation" ever since! We still play though not since COVID-19, but should return to performing as soon as allowed - most gigs were not canceled but indefinitely postponed, as were the trio we had for this month = August, 2020!
OMG I remember watching this show and I hated the "special effects" they used. I would check to see who was on Mike Douglas and if it was someone I wanted to see I's hang around for it. Most of the time, no, couldn't take it. Love the song Things I'd Like to Say.
There was another Chicago Group that also was on the Mercury Label. There name was Aura. They had horns and were just as good as the Group Chicago Transit Authority later just to be called, Chicago.I never remember Mercury doing any promotions on any of these groups.
If anyone ever Invent a time machine I am going back to the 1960s and I’m going to bring the best video Equipment I can fine and I’m going to videotape all these great bands from the 1960s the new Coloney Six was one of the best
Admittedly a very subjective opinion here, P.H., but I absolutely agree that we were indeed one of the best... and, when COVID-19 is no longer the threat it is, New Colony Six shall, God willing, resume playing again as we began a second go around in 1988 and been performing ever since!
When I heard this songs, I knew all the times, it's...fictional, it's... not searching for a women's at all, it's.. abouts profitable that's all, I knews that's all m...life's also these former artisited, are so giftedness and very talented too, greatest singers, lead man, Ronnie rices, can sing very well, too also I still can't compreh...why's their's record wasn't play on all the radios stations, but so far they''s made cashed, 😢😮❤❤😊
I agree with some of the other posts that the psychedelic effects are a sad distraction. It would be a lot better to see more of the band. I guess back in 1969 these effects were considered cutting edge. Truth be told, they probably were not that impressive on the black and white RCA and Zenith televisions that most people were watching back then.

@@NewColonySix-RayGraffiaJr. Wow, Ray Graffia! I bought my first New Colony Six album when I was a kid in the late 1960s and more in the early 1970s. My favorite NC6 album is "Attacking a Straw Man". I think the music really matured by then and I liked the addition of the horns and flute on a lot of the songs. Keep being great, Ray!
Jimmy Dean was like this throwback to the 1950's in this clip. He clearly was out of his element and took away from Mike Douglass who was trying to include the "new music" in his show. Jimmy Dean is a country music legend for sure but he seems to be a negative here which is too bad. He is better than this and did cool things in his life. Mike Douglass is a show biz legend. I agree with the other posts here on adding the psychedelic lighting that took away from the beautiful song. The clothes granted were briefly trendy that the musicians wore in the clip and probably now take a little from the song but that's what band's wore then so you go with it. Great song!

It was the Mike Douglas way to have a guest host for a week, and give them full opportunity, which could mean gumming things up, as in this case. Dean would have been on "Daniel Boone" at this point in time. He was cranking out country albums at the time, this co-hosting gig was a long time after his #1 crossover hit, "Big Bad John."
In I believe 1967, New Colony Six, The Shadows of knight (Remember G.L.O.R.I.A.), The Buckingham's, etc. concert was the first Pop/Rock concert I went to. It was at the Band Shell at Grant Park in Chicago. It was great and encouraged this 12 year old boy to keep drumming and guitar playing all my life. And I see New Colony Six has made it into the Illinois Music Hall of Fame. Music connects us to our spirit and God and each other. Jesus loves you guys and everyone. If you want a blessed life like mine you have to ask Jesus to forgive you of all your sins, stop sinning, and follow Jesus through reading His word, The Bible.
I love all the NC6 romantic ballads but...this? They were trying to be something they were not, and probably couldn't have sustained that image. Not sure when this was taped, but glad they released one last great ballad, 'Long Time To Be Alone' before they split.

Quick 'pre-internet' story: I was combing the used record bins somewhere in the late 1970's, and couldn't believe my luck when I found a near-mint copy of 'Attacking a Straw Man'. Ronnie Rice signed it for me in 1984. Still a prized part of my lp collection. Best to you, your family, and the other NC6 members.

Michael Douglas show has the best musical groups of the 60"s on his show!! I always watched this show as a kids growing up in ChICAGO

Too bad they were on Mercury. I think several acts suffered. Gram Parker wrote Mercury Poisoning about them.
