Short Decker Hunting Terrier description:
On average slightly larger than a typical Rat Terrier, the Decker Hunting Terrier is a still pretty small breed. But as a working hunting dog, they must have very athletic, agile, flexible and well balanced body. The height and weight can vary quite a lot from one Decker to another but it is typically around 18 inches and 25 lbs, which is 45 cm and 12 kg. There are no extreme size differences between males and females.
Decker Hunting Terriers have pretty high energy level and they definitely need daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. These dogs are not coach potatoes and they are best suited for active people who love outdoors. You must take your Decker on several daily longer walks, accompanied by some playtime and some mental exercise, so the dog is not bored and does not develop any unwanted behaviour, such as destruction.

Is the Decker Hunting Terrier your favourite dog breed?
Yes, and thank You for honoring my request!!!
Rocadog break down the differences between the Deutcher Drathaar and the German Wirehair pointer.
Absolutely. My decker terrier Tucker is my best friend and extremely smart. And you’re information in 100% correct! Thank you so much for this video
@@emmebivens2261 Happy you like the vid!
I could not imagine a better companion than our Decker. Thanks for the excellent video.
Loved seeing my dogs in the video and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Definitely not a breed for an owner that doesn't have the patience or time to put into training. The Basenji that Milton Decker bred in adds a level of intelligence and stubbornness for sure. With the right training, mental stimulation, and physical outlet these dogs are wonderful companions and make great house pets.
I will make a note that the brindle dog is an Old Dominion Terrier. She is mostly Decker Terrier with a bit of American Staffordshire Terrier.
Thanks for letting me use your dogs photos in the video :)
@@Rocadog BEST DOG YOU EVER HAVE
I lost my Decker last July as a result of a dental in June. She was 18. She was the sweetest dog, not a mean bone in her body. Definitely reflected the basenji in her blood line with her white and red/tan color and stiffer fur than my rat terriers. She was bred from Sycamore Flats Tuffy and Sycamore Flats Jackie, so her ancestors are well documented. She wasn't used to show or hunt but as foundation breeding stock. We miss our clumsy, funny girl. We got her just before she was 11 and left at a kill shelter.
Sorry for your loss..
I have three of them. We bought our first one from Milton’s son, Ellis. Love this breed.
Getting my first Decker in a week. I can't wait. I live on a ranch, so she will be kept busy.
Good luck with your new dog, Barbara!
Decker Owner Here - I’ve had my girl for 7 years and I would choose her over and over again. As a puppy, her energy was unmatched, but we expected that from a terrier so there was no surprise there. She needed lots of attention / training and consistency, but learned FAST. She caught onto all of the basic commands after the first couple tries and we added in some additional ones for better recall and to halt her prey response if necessary (in the case she runs into a smaller dog and does anything unwanted or a rabid animal and we need to pause her to prevent injury). Her coat is such an incredible shine, her spots are my favorite and the ears, don’t get me started. We got lucky, she chooses not to bark unless necessary (threat, general alert) and her growl is only when she is playing hard (which her and daddy wrestle a lot to burn energy). Although she has high energy, she knows when it’s time to reserve it so she doesn’t overdo it with her little human… she is amazing with our son and from day one knew she had to be careful. We teach him the best way to interact with her so that she doesn’t pain his boundaries and she reciprocates through gentle nudging and paused response to toy throws. I will admit, this dog requires a lot of attention / exercise and training in their first few years, but they are paid back x100 in their later years and they are the best and most loyal companions with precision seek and kill ability that will keep any rodent or pesky animal out of your yard.
Thanks for sharing!
My Decker is amazing! I have had Chiuhuhas (SP?) Bull terriers, Chows, Pinchers and my Decker might just steal my heart. Not that the other dogs weren't loved and missed. But got mine from a rescue not knowing what I was getting. Best decision. Smart and extremely loyal. Love him!
That is awesome!
Another good video on a Dog Breed I have not heard of.😊
Thanks!
I lost my Decker after 14 years. The best family pet I’ve ever had. He was never used for hunting. He was gentle and loving. He was so funny and silly. We have had rat terriers in the family for decades and I will stick with the larger Decker breed. Best dog ever. He will be missed.
Sorry for your loss..
Regal Bearing, High Intelligence, very clean Lines...Excellent animal !!
ThankYou!!
Love All Your Videos Always 4 Many, Many Years
Thankyou for your continued dedication
God Bless You!!
Thank you very much!
I 100% recommend this breed. Wish I still had my boy.
👍👍
We have had people at the dog park come up to us and say "we have had Basengis for decades and your dog is part Basenji" AND "we have had Smooth Coated Fox Terriers for decades and your dog is part Smooth Coated Fox Terrier." The ancestors shine through 😉
my decker weighs 50lbs and not fat
Some times or all the times when I’m out side my neighbor has one it barks at me and growls at me from the fence when I’m going to the other neighborhood behind the backyard I see the dog on top of the fence it climbs up the skateboard ramp and barks at people in the back the owner just says it’s fine it won’t j7mp over the fence once they said that.that got me fricked up
B gorgeous dog 🐕 breed
👍👍
I have both a Decker Rat Terrier and an Old Dominion Terrier. The ODT is pretty much a Decker with more Basenji and/or AmStaff added for genetic health. My ODT is 1/8 AmStaff, and that is the difference between the two.
👍👍
What is the difference between a Decker vs the Old Dominion Terrier? Are they same just use the name interchangeably?
I’m also wondering the same thing !
I have this dog,got him at 8wks almost a year old chas
👍👍
Mine has skin issues
So it's any size any colour pricked or folded ears, that's not a breed.
Their is a standard look it up . As long as it isn't akc its probably a good breed and not ruined by show dog breeders
@@garysh3580 It's not recognised as a breed by AKC, there's not much of a standard.
Look up Old Dominion Terrier. A very similar breed. Decker with more Basenji and/or AmStaff added for genetic health. I have both a Decker Rat Terrier and an Old Dominion Terrier. The ODT is 1/8 Am/Staff is tge difference between the two.
Nonsense, Deckers are very consistent in appearance. Erect ears, 35 or so pounds, some coat variation but mostly white with black or black and brown, they have several ancestor breeds so there is some variety of genes that can be expressed. When DNA tested they will show the Basengi, Smooth Fox and Rattie and even an odd contributor in fairly predictable ratios.
@@sandhill9313 Here's the standard.
The ears can be upright or tipped and are carried erect when the dog is alert. It can be born with a short or full-length tail, each being left in its natural state or docked at two days of age. The coat colors include pearls, sables, chocolates, red and white, tri-spotted, solid red, black and tan, blue and white and red brindle.
Height 18 - 23 inches (45 - 58½ cm)Weight 25 - 38 pounds (11 - 17 kg
It's not just the vast variation that exists in the standard, it's what's omitted, how long should they be, what shape should the head be, how long should the muzzle be, how should the teeth be set, the description is that of many dogs
