Donald Osborne has become one of my heroes... As someone who loves cars and is working on a company to push the world of performance arts and theatre to new heights (which is progressing well I might add) knowing there's someone like Donald to look up to gives me motivation every day. One day I'll travel to the states and meet him, it's a dream to talk cars and music with the man. A dream.
Maybe if my company is successful enough, I might be able to persuade him to have dinner with me. Now that would be a life changing experience.
The best car show ever produced. Brilliant. At America’s capital of civilization, culture and classical style. Thank you, Sirs.
It`s nice that Jay would promote a museum like the Audrain and it`s no big surprise and if he ever gets bored with his own collection, there is another hundred of them all over the USA to promote.
Hope Jay is recovering quickly.
I saw a video of him returning to his garage already. It looked like he got burned pretty bad, but thankfully he seemed in good spirits and even joked saying he was "going to get some barbecue"
Yes, and I hope Donald recovers too……..from loving the Camargue.😂
This show improves every season. I wish there were more mansions so this show could continue forever.
Thank you for watching!
Jay Leno is one of the few people that can say, without a scintilla of irony, "It's the most used super car I have ..."
Amazing...get well soon Jay...we need you buddy.
Jay’s humor is top notch. Donald compliments him nicely of course! 🎩
The Mercedes-Benz SLR in this video was the best supercar of that era.
I've got a Falcon ute with 460,000kms on it...Still runs like the Swiss rail network, never even hints at letting me down. It's not my only car, but I use it all the time and it's the best car I've ever had, hands down. A nice one is actually becoming worth some money now, goes to show it's worth looking after your vehicle. They really can last you a lifetime, if it's the right vehicle.
It’s funny how when the Mercedes hood was opened, part of a squirrel’s nest fell out. LOL
What a house! What a trio of cars! What a duo to present them to us! As entertaining as ever gentlemen - another great episode.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have to agree with Jay. The Camarge looks like an 81 mustard yellow Ford Granada with an aftermarket front grill. 😂❤🏁 (maybe vise versa)
LOL 4-wheel brakes gave you "hope against the errant bicyclist". Donald, you're a national treasure!
Wonderful! I love these guys. Leno resonates with me as a car crazy working class kid from the '50s & '60's. For me, repairing cars was a thing that working class people did. Leno no longer needs to work on his own cars, but still does. And so do I. I relate so much to Leno. Donald Osborne wrote for Sports Car Market and now for Linkage magazine. A very intelligent and interesting guy. I spend a lot of time working on and thinking about cars & motorcycles, yet these guys know so much about different models and automotive history. Osborne also seems to have an amazing grasp of history & architecture. Is there a script here or do these guys just know so much?
May favorite part of the intro, is Jay offering pizza and Donald's refusal. It's a little gesture that says so much about you and Jay.
A sophisticated "get that out of my face" moment.
Gorgeous little beach house, fantastic cars.
And 2 fabulous guys, for sure the most important, valuable elements in this video.
Thank you Jay and Donald
Thanks for watching the video!
Donald must be doing OK when he can hire Jay as his driver.
I think Donald likes autos, and Jay likes driving. It suits them both.
@@nobodynoone2500 Its called a joke
Love the intro...LMAO!
The carriage house at the Orchard is gorgeous. wow.
Was thinking the same and imagining it was mine...
Aren't we all!
What a great duo. They both compliment each other with their knowledge of cars and Donald with his knowledge of houses. You see and feel the enjoyment and fun they have in making these episodes. I really love to watch this.
My guy Donaldo is such an amazing wealth of knowledge it’s mind blowing
Another well done video, gentlemen! I've always loved this particular car! It's one of my all-time favorites simply because of its superb combination of performance and every day comfort and drivability!
Thanks, Gerard! Glad you enjoyed! Have you seen the latest episode of Mansions & Motorcars? Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/br_DtO4KOLs/v-deo.html
I really like these shows
Thanks!
I like that it is a stone driveway like something from England or Europe but you need a gardener to rake it.
Hi Donald and Jay! Terrific auto. Certainly a head turner. Could cut a diamond in the back seat and have a nap.
Or circumcise a baby.
Donald & Jay....what a treasure trove of automotive information and class. Also, thank you Donald for your information about the homes, the art, etc. Thank you for your efforts to preserve and deliver our history instead of its diminishment. Bottom line.....I can't get enough of you two.....Russell D.
Thank you for watching!
Jay & Donald on top form ! Thankyou gentlemen .
There's a UA-cam clip with a guided tour around Murray's own collection. When they stopped at the SLR, Murray sort of echoed the public reactions to the car as explained by Jay: He didn't seem to embrace it that much because it's not enough "supercar" and he was miffed because he couldn't style the car himself - he did say how great it is to drive it across the continent. I assume that the garage door was opened deliberately to let the Mercedes 300 lurk from the background? 😊
OMG. When I read the were going to the Orchard l had a major flashback to the time where I worked there in the mid to late 1980s. My friend was the caretaker of the estate, and for a period of time I lived in a room in the basement. I believe it had 7 acres back then.
Part of it's history that wasn't mentioned is that the mansion fell into disrepair in the 1970s , so Mrs. Firestone (yes, of the tire company fame), who lived next door bought the estate and took care of it until it was purchased in 1983 by F. Dale Crabtree. Crabtree was an Oklahoma oilman. Unfortunately, Mr. Crabtree was engaged in some financial impropriety and the FBI swooped in and confiscated the estate. The furnishings were sold at auction, which attracted the local media.
After that it was owned by an art dealer, then by the founder of Ted Talks who sold it recently.
The outside of the mansion looks the same, but the grounds have been substantially altered.
Lots of stories about my time there, and a major dose of nostalgia.
Amazing to see how these estates have evolved over the years. We actually recorded an episode of Mansions and Motorcars at the former Firestone Estate - Ocean Lawn. Check it out here! ua-cam.com/video/vyg1i2EdGTo/v-deo.html
Escape a hurricane, in-laws and of course, reality. Enjoy the ride.
One of the best episodes yet!! Keep them coming!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You guys reminded me of the 70’s Brit series ‘The Persuaders’ at the opening there 😆 BTW JL where’s the denim shirt? It’s like seeing Denis the Menace (Beano version) without his red and black hoops!
What a great intro 😅 and after this another great episode! Thank you guys! And best wishes to Mr. Leno! Greetings from Germany
Mercedes' and McLaren's cars are built like any others; the driver's door's upper weather strip is falling off. Makes it more endearing to me.
The side pipes on this were done so that the exhaust would effect the aerodynamics. Its a flat floor car and they didnt want the exhaust in the way.
Enjoy these videos so much, as both the cars and the witty banter between them are a joy! (ps luv that SLR McLaren)
Glad you like them!
"You were about to have cataract surgery and you thought is was a casket"....LOL
It feels like you catered this video specifically for me. Such a joy to watch, great job guys!
Thank you for watching! be sure to subscribe!
Enjoyed the show guys
Thank you for watching!
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels along with Jays Garage!
Thank you for the kind words! Be sure to subscribe if you haven't already!
Another wonderful episode! Thank you so much!:)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Donald for the remarks about the RR Camargue, by the way I own the last rhd one built, and Paolo Martin, the designer , is a very close friend to me.If once you want to do a feature about him, I could give you the details to contact him.For once, Jay is missing the point ;-)
The headrest bolstering looks like somebody described to a blind seamstress what leather fluting looks like.
these are all so good!! p.s. mind those stairs :DD
That was a great episode guys! Truly loved the Rolls.
Thank you for watching!
Another awesome video!!! Thanks for sharing this with us. 👌👌
Thanks for watching
Hope Jay is doing well!
Jay can guesstimate anything. "what is this, 4 or 5 acres?" 😎
East Coast rules, old school.
I like the M-B that was in the garage that the McLaren was parked in front of
Beautiful home! Jay, Maybe a second home to buy in New Port?
I think Seafair is enough house for Jay.
What he needs more of is garages. lol
This is the very first house built in Newport in French chateau style. “Oh alright”.
I changed piston rings to my 2.2 opel ascona on our family kitchen table, when I was 20 or so...
Just plucked the engine out and carried it to kitchen.
Mom complained.
Imagine if you had a chauffeur that talked to his boss as much as Leno does?
Most people drive to work. Jay start working in his driveway.
Jay Leno and Donald Osborne starring in: "Driving Mr. Donald."
Jay is turning into the real life Tony Clifton
The Seraph also had the BMW V12.
If you're interested in the story behind the SLR McLaren in more detail, among other Murray masterpieces, I highly recommend the Collecting Cars "in conversation with" podcast featuring Chris Harris and Gordon Murray. You can find it here on UA-cam, it won't let me drop a link in.
Some old pics of the bodyshop down Browns Lane Jag plant massive room full of sheet metal workers mass producing wings for the E type each wing hand cut formed with absolute precison for the line. The last gasp of coach mass productioon
Donald, you have made a faux pas. The Mercedes has scissor doors, not gullwing :) No Black Sea caviar flown in daily to Maxime's for you!
The Roller looks like the wealthy Grandfather of London Taxis. The Austin 7 is Magilla Gorilla's spare in a spare
Was this the forerunner to the SS I? The reason that I ask is that when I went to England in 1959 with the Air Force, I happened upon a 1934 SS I and was able to purchase it for only one hundred pounds ($280.00). Sadly, I couldn't afford to bring it back to the States.
Jay, looking from the front camera showing Donald in the rear seat, I notice the head liner has a gap on each side from the panel that houses many items for the passengers. What happened with this section of the roof? I mean, the best car made? Come on!
02:23 Oh, don't bother to use your seatbelt, Donald. The laws of physics don't apply to the rich who ride in the back seat. 😅🤣😂
But he certainly has the "man-spreading" down. Could the producers have PICKED (thank you Ross Geller) a less flattering camera angle?
I absolutely loved the background scenery as the guys were driving around. Sure, it's probably not so beautiful in the wintertime but at this time of year, it was absolutely beautiful.
While I enjoy Jay's videos from southern CA, the background where he drives around is sooo ugly. There's nothing but strip malls punctuated with utility poles and overhead cables. Doug DeMuro's videos are the same way. While the weather might be great the year round, the LA area and most of southern CA is "butt ugly". Sure, there are some pockets of beautiful scenery but most people live their daily lives in strip mall hell. No thanks.
I bet Jay and Donald flipped a coin to see who didn’t get to drive!
Donald, no seat belt? Bad .
Is a Rolls Royce still a Rolls Royce if the Germans own them?
Still made in England....
Yes. The king is German, too.
that seat belt in the Rolls is terrible riding up Jays neck..
I have to agree with Jay about the Camargue - looks ugly
To much camera time on watching people talk. Look at this small motor , 3 seconds & bad lighting. Jay , you can do better.
Love all your videos, but where on the planet can anyone drive 200 MPH and not get arrested? I'm guessing that 99% of the people watching your videos will never be able to afford any of these super cars.
Bonneville
Isn't that why they upload these for us?
