Billy Joel actually heard this song one night in a dream he had and after he awoke he recorded the melody and words on a handheld tape recorder he had beside his bed.

This reminds me of my memory with Message in a Bottle by The Police. My dad died in 2016 during Christmas time, 8 days after my Birthday. Even though it's my favorite time of the year, It's always hard in that aspect. My Dad and my uncle look very similar (as some brothers do lol) and Christmas 2022 rolls around. There were 2 musicians that my dad especially liked. U2 and The Police. The upbeat music masks the depth of this song. Wow. As an older man, I hear it now for what it is. Billy is on a spiritual search. He doesn't offer and answer but he's genuinely asking the life questions that matter. What he (and no one) is looking for is cold religion; they are searching for a genuine relationship with God.
When I was about 3 or 4 I would try my hardest to turn on VH1 and jam to this song when it would come on. This and We Didn't Start the Fire are my two favorites from Billy Joel.
So sad to know this was Billy's last album in 30 yrs.now.Doesn't look like Billy is ever gonna release another album ever again ☹️.Thank you for all the music you've wrote Billy, will always enjoy it.
It will never cease to be funny to me. One of the more prominent lyrics of this song is “God knows I’ve never been a spiritual man.” Then, at the end of the song? “Gloria!”
tonight, i had a concert, and we sang this song. it was so beautiful. i was actually one of the soloists that sang the ooh’s at 2:09. and it was such an experience i can’t even explain it. hearing the rest of the choir sing the lyrics and we sing a different part on top of it sounds so beautiful. it was my favorite part of the song. i felt almost like the main character while singing it. there aren’t even words that i can say to describe how it made me feel. it was such a good time. definitely a core memory i will never forget
Wow good job I actully a couple months ago I sang this at the ooooo part I was picked to me in a singing group at the end of the song I was so happy I’ve never got picked for anything before
One of my fondest memories of this song was singing it at the top of my lungs while working a solo shift at a grocery store. I was downstacking banana boxes and slinging them around like nothing
Since I was like 15 i have sworn I have this memory of this day and I remember hearing this song in it and not one person in my family has ever remembered this day or memory or anything like that day happening or anything like it at all!!! And I have always thought this song was great so maybe a dream but it had it for yrs and yrs...to this day i still have this crazy memory and remember this song!!!

Happy 70th birthday, Billy! You were amazing at Madison Square Garden tonight!
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
From the mountains of faith
To a river so deep
I must be looking for something
Something sacred I lost
But the river is wide
And it's too hard to cross
And even though I know the river is wide
I walk down every evening and I stand on the shore
And try to cross to the opposite side
So I can finally find out what I've been looking for
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the valley of fear
To a river so deep
And I've been searching for something
Taken out of my soul
Something I would never lose
Something somebody stole
I don't know why I go walking at night
But now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore
I hope it doesn't take the rest of my life
Until I find what it is that I've been looking for
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the jungle of doubt
To a river so deep
I know I'm searching for something
Something so undefined
That it can only be seen
By the eyes of the blind
In the middle of the night
I'm not sure about a life after this
God knows I've never been a spiritual man
Baptized by the fire, I wade into the river
That runs to the promised land
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night
Listened to this song when I got into the College of my dream! It has then remained with me
Whenever this song used to come on the radio I would stop whatever I was doing just to listen
1st time I heard this was on the Billy Joel very best cd, amazing song
The upbeat music masks the depth of this song. Wow. As an older man, I hear it now for what it is. Billy is on a spiritual search. He doesn't offer and answer but he's genuinely asking the life questions that matter. What he (and no one) is looking for is cold religion; they are searching for a genuine relationship with God.
I love this song too verry much thanks from peru
When I was about 3 or 4 I would try my hardest to turn on VH1 and jam to this song when it would come on. This and We Didn't Start the Fire are my two favorites from Billy Joel.
So sad to know this was Billy's last album in 30 yrs.now.Doesn't look like Billy is ever gonna release another album ever again ☹️.Thank you for all the music you've wrote Billy, will always enjoy it.
My lovely friend Carol just sent me this song ❤️ We're both awake at 2 am. Her in Brissie, me in Sydney. Carol, I love you ♥️♥️
It will never cease to be funny to me. One of the more prominent lyrics of this song is “God knows I’ve never been a spiritual man.” Then, at the end of the song? “Gloria!”
*Billy Joel River Of Dreams great song* 😎👍
Love this song, it speaks to our humanity.
I love how he sang a bit of Gloria in the fade out at 3:45. “Gloria, it’s not Marie.” He based that off of The Cadillacs’ 1954 version.
tonight, i had a concert, and we sang this song. it was so beautiful. i was actually one of the soloists that sang the ooh’s at 2:09. and it was such an experience i can’t even explain it. hearing the rest of the choir sing the lyrics and we sing a different part on top of it sounds so beautiful. it was my favorite part of the song. i felt almost like the main character while singing it. there aren’t even words that i can say to describe how it made me feel. it was such a good time. definitely a core memory i will never forget
I'm so happy for you, must've felt awesome ❤️❤️❤️
Wow good job I actully a couple months ago I sang this at the ooooo part I was picked to me in a singing group at the end of the song I was so happy I’ve never got picked for anything before
one of my high school choirs did this. it was beautiful.
we also have sung it's so much fun.
I doing this song in middle school at my choir
this was one of my first cds i bougth in the nienthies and ist so cool musik
There is something so euphoric about walking through central park with this in your ears
This was the first cassette tape my dad got and I listened to it in my room in my sony walkman front to back every day for weeks before he finally asked if it was ok for him to pop it in the new tape player in his truck😂. I loved Billy Joel from the first time I heard him on the record player in our house when I was 6. It's been 30 years since those days. I just stumbled across this and it's like I went back in time. Music is like a time capsule.
The one song played at my funeral.
My music teacher used to play this song all the time! Great memories!
Your music teacher had great taste.
This is the only Billy Joel song that I do like...
Piano man is great too
