- I've had so many people who asked me to do a video explaining the mod matrix, what it's for, and how to use it. This is that video! The mod matrix is the secret gateway to complex, interesting sound design, allowing the synthesizer to modulate the sound in a variety of ways. I talk about what it does, how it works, then demonstrate using the mod matrix in three different synthesizers.

From my point of view...mod matrix and modulation in general is the heart of synthesise because modulation is...the life of a sound!
Excellent Scott. Reminds me of stuff Tony Banks used to do with the Arp. On the Lamb album he was left hand organ chords and right hand lead note that when pressed harder pushed up a 1/3 pitch (Bb to Db. It always baffled me because he only had 2 hands. We couldn't see what he was doing back then. You've really illuminated these techniques and approaches well, thank you.
Thanks for this video. I wish I could watch all these instructional videos back in the days. U had to read and experiment and things took longer. Now days I can just click a few times watch and learn and there is a lot to learn. Thanks again👍
I found a couple of shortcuts when using the Hydrasynth's matrix page. If you are in the page and the source is highlighted, if you want to use any of the 5 LFOs or Envelopes, just use the buttons to make it the source. Another faster way to get to the other sources like velocity, keyboard, etcetera is to hit LFO 5 as it'll save you scrolling all the way from the first source.
The old patch synths: history note, phone operators used to do the same thing, connecting you via plugging in patch cables on their board.
The mod matrix is at least to me extremely simple. Most people that have just a little knowledge of either computers or a simple spreadsheet should be able to understand it. Another thing is to make it usefull, but with digital instruments you can't really do anything wrong. All the possible combi's have been coded for you. I am pretty sure that wasn't the case with old modular synth and tons of wiring. For once it's pretty hard to get a decent picture of what is going to what and I bet you could possible break something by wrongly connecting different outputs or inputss together. It's actually amazing what modern tech does for you, if you're into sound design. I don't personly have so much use for it, but I am in awe of what you can do eg with the Hydrasynth. That thing is so amazing. It's not very analog in its sound, but there is not much limit to what you can do with it

Great video. Once you've discovered the power of the mod matrix it is real fun to use it for sound design. My preferable synths for using mod matrices are the Novation Summit/Peak, the Hydrasynth and (my current favourite) the Access Virus.

Mod Matrixs' are easy to understand, it's the stupid olde-tyme lingo synth manufacturers insist on using that's confusing.
