    I was thinking about this today...you know, Yamaha could probably fix this problem with a firmware upgrade. All they would have to do is just expand the "null" portion of the pitch wheel by a little bit - the area where the synth assumes the pitch wheel is not being used. So if it is reading the pitch wheel from 0 (all the way down) to 255 (all the way up), and it considers 127 to be "no pitch wheel", instead consider anything from 126 to 128 to be "no pitch wheel" and that would eliminate the jitter problem.
    Or, they could just start using different potentiometers. :)

      That would give you a dead spot in its motion.

      @@noisetheorem Exactly. It actually already has one, it would just enlarge it slightly to stop this problem from occurring.

    After this video I don't need more arguments to go for a Montage instead of a MODX. It is worth the extra bucks, or in my case, euros. Thank you so much!

    Good stuff! Thanks, Scott! DeOxit fader lube is the best, and essential for anyone with gear that has faders! It is different from the regular DeOxit, so make sure you are getting the right stuff- look for the green label!

    Hey Scott - thanks for the tip man. Yeah - funny potentiometers man, I always wondered why manufacturers of those components, and engineers who utilize them - didn't put a small port (a hole basically) in the face of devices like the MODX, Stereo, Guitar whatever - that would allow you to easily poke the straw in there by just removing the pot knobs or a small plug in the case of pitch bend / mod wheels... Anyway - good tip! Hope you hit your 20K - I'm getting up to 2K - ish right now myself haha, pretty stoked.

    Thanks - great help, as always! With the service and education level here in Copenhagen, you can always buy a keyboard, but the sellers sadly seem to be allergic to indepth knowledge.

    This is really weird. This is something that shouldn’t happen on a synth as new as the MODX. Yamaha should be pressured to recall.

    Thanks so much for the tips, Scott. As an alternate option, I'm wondering if there's a setting in the MODX that could be set to ignore the pitch wheel affecting an individual patch or the overall synth?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes, you can adjust the pitch wheel sensitivity for individual parts even - and you can change it for positive or negative. Just set them both to zero, and the pitch wheel will have no effect.

    I’ve seen this issue for a couple years on the MODX and a couple Korg Kronos keyboards. Lately, the mod axis on my Kronos 2 stick sometimes thinks it’s in the forward position when switching between Combo presets. Push it forward and let it snap back to center and it’s OK. The mod position looks like it’s in the center on Mainstage when this happens.

    I was at a gig about a year ago and my MODX was out of tune at sound check when I powered up. I was going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong. I finally saw the Mod wheel was in a full up position and it made a piano patch sound out of tune. What made it so confusing is the mod wheel does nothing to the patch if you move it after the keyboard is powered up.

    I ahve a problem with my modx where the second fader has an issue. I will bring the fader all the way fown but is jumps between 4 to 17% volume. When i slide it to the top, it lowers the percentage form 127. Do you know why?

    interesting that the PLUS has this issue considering that they changed the actual wheels themselves in the PLUS version. I have a modx, never had the issue, its always covered when not in use.. Hopefully thats all there is to it for now.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  5 місяців тому

      The wheels might be changed, but the potentiometers are not. Mine was always covered as well, and it still had the problem.

    Bad, or low quality, potentiometers are the plague of our controlers. Usualy it happens just after the end of the standard 1 year garanty.
    On my side my Arturia Keylab suffers of this, sending random MIDI CC. Bad potentiometers made in a sweatshop. (Read this #Arturia 😞)
    In my opinion a serious company like Yamaha or Arturia should not force us to do any DIY on their products before 10 years of reasonable usage.

    Supposedly this happens on the MODX and not the MODX+ though? The pitch wheel on the MODX+ was changed to match the Montage one and AFAIK does not have this problem.

    Anyone experiencing this issue, how long after acquiring your board did this start happening? You can't open it up under warranty can you?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  5 місяців тому

      It happened to mine after it was about a year and a half old. It's your synth, you can open it up under warranty if you want. I have OFTEN repaired synths that I own that are still under warranty, simply because I know I can fix them, and I don't want to go through the hassle of transporting or shipping the synth to some repair station, somewhere - often at my own expense.

      @ScottsSynthStuff  5 місяців тому +1

      I've never heard of this happening on the Montage. That said, the Montage is SUPER easy to open up and work on. It's designed for service, unlike the MODX.

      If you own enough gear then as rare as it is, from time to time sliders, knobs, wheels etc. can send random midi data because the metal can oxidize hence the product DeOXit (de oxidize). Most likely caused by condensation in the cooler months and the enclosed machine warms a bit compared to the outside temp. Well that's what I think is going on anyhow ;)

  • @woodyforrest313
    @woodyforrest313 5 місяців тому

    Why do you have a MODX when you own a Montage? The System-8 also makes no sense for people like you who own the Fantom. Your equipment park makes no sense IMO.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  5 місяців тому +1

      I haven't actually had a MODX for a couple of years, I sold it when I got the Montage. That said, I know many people who have a Montage in their studio and a MODX for gigs. Same reason I have a Fantom in the studio, as well as a Fantom-06 - which is my live board.
      I've also had the System-8 much longer than the Fantom. I actually prefer sound design on the System-8 over the Fantom, it's far easier and faster to do.
