Was business that bad for diamond (them specifically, not the comic companies themselves) or were they just on some bullsh*t? I’ve heard talk that they were a little sketchy from day one as far as their practices went, operating far differently than any other distributor in any other capacity.
George Lucas is an interesting case. He felt strongly about his right to change his art, but was a huge proponent for the cultural preservation of art and films. It can be frustrating to see that, but it’s straight up evil to change a deceased author’s work when you have no connection to them
Most people didn't object to Lucas making his special editions of the Star Wars movies. The objection was that he made the original version unavailable. Had every special edition DVD included the original version too, everyone would have been happy.
@@wtk6069 That’s true; the original angle was that the Special Editions were a 20th anniversary celebration of the franchise and not to be the default versions of the films
Diamond destroyed their competition and ran half the sellers out of business by forcing them to buy products they didnt want. Just like Hasbro bankrupting Toys R Us this doomed DIamond they now are the victims of their own greed.
Woke vs. liberal: I used to use the term "liberal" much more, um, liberally to refer to anyone left of center. These days I draw a clear distinction in my mind, and my speech, between Leftists (a.k.a. the woke) and liberals. Mostly because I actually have respect for the tenets of classic liberalism.
That's an important distinction to draw. Old-school liberals are really the left wing of classical liberalism, which is why back in the day Democrats like Bill Clinton used to call themselves "Jeffersonian Democrats". But these days, most of them no longer even recognize the legitimacy of the American Founders, which is quite sad to see. They've sold out to Marxism, which is literally a knee-jerk reaction against classical liberalism, both its right and left wings.
I think Pecos Bill was genuinely one of the best cartoons Disney has ever produced. Personally as a huge animation fan, Disney trying to destroy its own past and focusing less on animation hurts me 1000 times more than them ruining Star Wars. Even if/when Disney eventually goes down in flames due to this agenda nonsense, I would not grave dance, I would only feel a deep sense of mourning.
With regards to diamond and their questionable business decisions, I've also heard about their behaviour towards individual shops with regards to "accidently" over shipping books and then expecting these shops to pay for diamond's "mistakes". Can you comment on this without getting sued?
Australian here. Good selling comics in the comic book stores would then make their way to the newsagents about 2 months later. In 91, 92 newsagents had a lot marvel and Batman & tec, 4 superman titles,g/l , the flash and justice league from d.c. then image turned up and then the top selling ultraverse characters
These writers like Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick imagine that comic fans are like they were, hanging out in the Warren Ellis message board being unbearable hipsters about everything.
@@chrisw6164 The funny thing about these a-holes is that they're finding out people DON'T like them and most people WON'T "buy their books"! One thing I don’t see discussed much is the downstream effect of the decline of comics. Bad characters lead to bad action figures, bad trades, and affects the game industry with Games like Heroclix and DC/Marvel card games. People stop buying and playing those games because the character selection is uninteresting.
Steve Skeates passed the day after this video, get his and all of his and Ditko's Hawk and Dove in the Silver Age TPB and you also get some Gil Kane and Neal Adams with it, a great nerdy book to snag for cheap, under $20 on all sites.
I had to pause to video to check I had my favourite 007 movies physically. I like Sean Connery as a mean shagaholic and watching Timothy Dalton setting assholes on fire. I don't need them to be 'fixed'.
One of the funniest things about Oliver queen is his political views and yet despite who is writing a jlu, batman, or dc comic or cartoon, much of his living came from the second amendment.
I dunno overall what killed modern comics for me and when--countless reboots and retcons certainly, price increases, overall generic artwork (competent but boring in that 'superhero' sensibility they all share of over-muscled, extreme physiques), or just...uninteresting stories or my being jaded and near 70...fuck knows. My guess is that perhaps 1-2 titles each month might appeal to me out of DC for various reasons...maybe. Consequently, much like eschewing the 1st run showing of a movie, I'll wait till it goes to DVD, and then even wait until the DVD goes on sale--same with comics. Nowadays there are good comics coming out of Image, other small publishers to keep my hand in the comics reading world, plus my own comics (cartoons) I create everyday. Oh, and then there's the preaching aspect to some comics these days where the editor or writer's personal ideologies get foisted on the reader...big pass on that. As a consequence, like how my college friend told me that his father wouldn't listen to any music made after 1945, I pay more attention to re-reading some of the stuff I remember that worked and entertained me in comics, be it the 60s or 90s or even in some cases, the 00s or later. Periodically I'll glim through google for 'best comics of 2020' to get a sense of what might intrigue me, and then chase them down...usually through 'means nefarious and ethically unsound' via bit-torrent sites. Oh, well--I figured I gave my 'best years' to comics as a collector and a reader from my youth through forever. I have no guilt, but if I ever see Chuck at a convention, I'd hand him a $20 and say thanks for the novels I've read. I'm not a complete asshole.
WHAT IS YOUR FEELINGS ON MULTI COVERS STARTED WITH JUSTICE LEAGUE 1. I SAY ITS A RIPOFF THAT CAUSED BY GREED. THAT AND DEALERS WHO WERE NON COLLECTORS LIKE FAT PHIL.
When the pandemic started and Diamond cried poormouth less than 30 days in, it confirmed for me that the comic industry was running on fumes.
Was business that bad for diamond (them specifically, not the comic companies themselves) or were they just on some bullsh*t?
I’ve heard talk that they were a little sketchy from day one as far as their practices went, operating far differently than any other distributor in any other capacity.
Big ups Chuck Dixon 😎👍
You were correct. Steve Skeates co-created and wrote The Hawk and The Dove originally.
RIP

Han shot first
I bet Collins would be more than glad to work with you to put out comic book versions of the Spillane stories. Especially newer ones he's finishing up

classic liberals think women and men should be equal. woke lefties think women are above men, and they hate the patriacrhy. pretty easy to distinguish

I was driven to that comic book shop by my mommy.

I experienced some of that when I got back into comics around 2007. Plenty of pretentious blogs and early social media hipster attitudes.

Chuck, have you ever written yourself into a story like Stan & Jack or Byrne used to do occasionally?

Hail, Chuck Dixon! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
DC's reboots killed my interest in buying any DC comics. Just flushing good storylines down the toilet with the bad storylines is terrible. 😭
You’re better at pitching First Kill than Zack. 😂
I've been looking forward to this topic

So, did you say this, this, this and this as directed by the Diamond high muckety-muck?

The first comic book marketed with a variant cover was Man of Steel #1 by John Byrne in 1986.
