    Interesting that my age group (50’s) seems to be invisible in the marketing universe, yet we have more money to spend on skincare and are willing to spend more time researching ingredients too. We’re not as traditionally “pretty” I guess, so maybe not as marketable. It’s about time companies start investing in marketing for us too.

    your rundown of the K-beauty landscape, especially the awareness of brands outside of Korea and Western market created brands is so insightful. As a Korean living in the UK, I love the enthusiasm for K-beauty but find most of the viral product not representative of what Koreans use or misleading. Brands like Erborian, Glow Recipe, trade on Korean beauty for marketing but aren't available in Korea or used by Koreans.

    I live in the greater Los Angeles area and I remember as a teen/young adult probably a little over 15 years ago they were used to sell this Korean brand which philosophy was based Traditional Asian Medicine focusing on Ginseng which was probably The History of Whoo or Sulhwasoo because it had yellow packaging with some gold script back they used to sell it QVC and HSN. But around 2011, BB cream (ie Missha) started to gain popularity here so Laneige and Sulhwasoo was able to break into market because of their distribution deals with Target and Sephora back then. My mom used to sell Avon and also used Olay or Lancôme and similarly to Korea here in the Shiseido products were marketed to women with mature skin and usually sold in Japanese-American marketplaces before Sephora started selling international brands to the wider American markets. I guess when I see skincare packaging I tend to stop and watch as a teen. For some reason, home shopping networks had primary access to lesser known K-brands but I could watch Korean Home shopping depending if you lived around a huge Asia population.

    I do enjoy watching this video! Very informative with statistics to support! Totally different from other personal sharing of UA-camr. Could you please compare Korean Retinal and Retinol products? While Retinal becomes popular, is it still worth to use Retinol? Thanks in advance! ❤

    • @OdileMonodTheMonodist
      @OdileMonodTheMonodist  6 місяців тому +2

      Thank you! In general yes Retinal is more biologically active than retinol, but I would say I tend to prioritise the overall formulation and technology employed in a product, rather than simply looking for more potent or concentrated ingredients. For instance I prefer using well-formulated 15% Ascorbic Acid serums rather than one of those vitamin C serums on the market with a high concentration of Ascorbic Acid but terrible stabilisation technology and feeling of use.
      Two ingredients discussed in this video (Medimin A and Retinyl Retinoate) only go through one conversion to become Retinoic Acid like Retinal does but they have beens shown to have fewer drawbacks when tested against Retinal. The IOPE retinol treatment besides boasting an incredible stabilisation technology also includes Granactive Retinoid and Bio-Seletinoid, which don't even have to go through conversion at all and are instantly active. So I would personally make the judgement on a case-by-case basis.

    I really love your expert info on korean skincare. No one is as in depth as you. May I know, in terms of antiaging, which works better, retinol or hanbang skincare ingredients like ginseng? Bcoz I know you love the History of Whoo Bichup antiaging serum. Would love your advise. Also, i notice iope or korean retinol products is so low in retinol compare to like Paula’s choice. Do they work? Though i like that the lower percentage mean it’s less irritation too

    • @OdileMonodTheMonodist
      @OdileMonodTheMonodist  6 місяців тому +2

      Thank you so much! One approach doesn't necessarily preclude the other - anecdotally many people following me have told me over the years that they like using Hanbang skincare in combination with a retinoid because it's designed to boost skin's defenses so they felt that not only Hanbang skincare effectively enhanced the effectiveness of the retinoid treatment, but also vastly helped to reduce the extreme dryness, skin flaking and irritation that is commonly associated with retinoids so you can definitely have the best of both worlds.
      That being said, if someone held a gun to my head and I could only choose one or the other, my personal preference would probably be Hanbang skincare, simply because I feel as if it provides a more comprehensive approach to skin aging and I mentioned time and time again how the Bichup serum is my absolute favourite Korean skincare serum ever so of course I HAVE to pick Hanbang 😁

    Also even though authentic brands like o hui, Iope etc have lines that cater to younger skin it’s still not widely known in the west. The west focus on drugstore brands or as odile mentions specifically made for the western market - usually really low priced and gives the impression “kbeauty is just so inexpensive”.

    When I started to learn about K-skincare most brands I saw had fragrance in it. I saw a shift as they become more popular in social media in the West when the skincare in the West were also giving more fragrance-free skincare options following the HUGE success of the Ordinary.
    I am hyper sensitive to fragrances natural or synthetic which is why I clearly remember that shift in Western brands and in Korean skincare I was aware of.
    Is it common in classic K-skincare brands to be fragrance-free or did they also follow the global phenomenal started by The Ordinary? And are they any Korean fragrance-free brands that target older women? Thanks !

      Yes but there's also more to it. Amorepacific appointed a new brand director and relaunched Sulwhasoo with a brand new brand image in an attempt to shed off the image of "skincare brand for mums" which I discussed in this video and overall reposition the brand to appeal to a younger audience. They have been harshly criticised for this move in Korea, and they've seen a steep decline in sales in the last year because they ended up alienating a significant portion of their core customer base.

    I recently bought the IOPE Stem III Ampoule at a local Aritaum store after watching your video on the Best of IOPE. I am very happy with it. As an over 50 consumer who loves asian skincare especially Korean I just wished more luxury or high end Korean brands formulated without fragrance or essential oils (since I developed a fragrance allergy a few years ago).

    Hi Odile, i ran into your Chanel and feel really grateful for it. I wanted to ask you if men can also use the History of Whoo Bichup Line, as well as Chogongjin Sosaeng Jin Boosting Essence and Cream. In Case the products are not suitable for men skin, is it possible that you can give your Feedback for the Gongjinhyang Nourishing Emulsion For Men, and the The history of whoo Cheongidan Kun Hwa Yang Line ? It would be highly appreciated ! Thank you alot !

      Thank you! In general there's no real functional distinction between men skincare lines and other lines mainly marketed to women.
      Brands create skincare lines specifically for men because of different consumer preferences between men and women (men on average tend to use fewer products, they are not usually on keen on floral fragrances, they shave more frequently which leads to a demand for soothing skincare products and generally products that work well with facial hair etc. etc).
      On average men tend to have oiler skin than women because they naturally have more oil glands, so most men skincare lines are geared towards oily and combination skin, but that doesn’t mean that regular skincare likes for oily and combination skin wouldn't work on men even if the products are not specifically marketed to them.
      Men skincare lines are mainly a matter of product positioning. If you're a man with dry skin, you might enjoy skincare products marketed to women more!
      That being said, Whoo's Gongjinhyang Gun is one of my husband's favorite skincare lines. It's a soothing and purifying skincare line geared towards combination and oily skin, the Cheongidan Kun is described as more nourishing by the brand but I've never had the chance to try the products in person.
      I would say go for the Bichup and Sosaeng Jin lines if you have normal to dry skin, if you have combination or oily skin it's worth looking into Whoo's men skincare lines.

    Never heard of retinyl retinoate before, it's very interesting. Just found the ingredient is in the new serum A-Retinoate from Theramid, a Spain company.
    I already love their copper peptide serum, will definitely try their vit A 😊

    my god what kind of hidden gem is this??? There is a layer of infromation that if i wanted to collect i would have spent hours cross checking wikipedia articles and even so I would still gett hust a shade of it. Thank you! I am still at 21.08 but i paused out of excitment!
    Because as a skincre enthousiast, I am more focused to check and understand the functionality of the skincare. So through the cracks the retinol back story was formed. I knew ROC was the first and the glam it took. I sort of feel I remembber the glamorous revolution in cosmetics. A sensation there was so science that was actually working and it was a pile of BS - LA MER F.E. -.
    Plus having devour my fair share of kdramas - a glimpse of the era that Korea long and intense work was showing something unstoppable was forming and it's not exaggerattion but solid. Love you for that, but out of admiration again, fix your demographics by fixing the societal pressure.

      I started this channel because I wanted people abroad to look at the Korean beauty industry with different eyes, beyond empty buzzwords, seasonal fads and social media sensations. I don’t personally feel the need to be perceived as physically attractive on the Internet, so I don't see the point of editing myself to look like something I'm not. Every once in a while I get the occasional troll comment trying to undermine what I do by making negative remarks on my physical appearance but frankly - it doesn't really touch me. As long as people walk away from my videos with a better understanding of Korean skincare, I feel accomplished.
