  • This quick tip is about how to make a granular sample sound on a Korg Volca Sample.
    You will need:
A Volca Sample (you could try this on other samplers as well)
    Instructions:
Pick your sample (this works better on a longer sample)
Set the tempo to max (240BPM)
Go into step mode and put triggers on all 16 steps of the sequence
Push play to start the sequence
Adjust “Start” to change which part of the sample you hear
Adjust “Length” to change how big the grains are
Adjust “Speed” to change the pitch
Add some attack to make the sound less clicky and glitchy
Add reverb to smooth the sound out more
This trick adds something almost like granular synthesis to a sampler that doesn’t have a granular mode. In granular synthesis playback speed, direction and pitch are all independent of one another.
Every time the sample is triggered a "grain" is heard. The start setting sets where in the sample the grain is from, the length adjusts how big the grains are and speed adjusts the pitch. The envelopes adjust the grain window shape.

on the volca kick there is also a hidden feature that you can set the tempo to up to 600 bpm, it stands somewhere in the manuel. it should actually work on all volcas :)

Thanks for the info, we will have to try it out as that would make this even better.

This works on the Sample too (and all Volca's to my knowledge) It's a global param that you set by turning the volca off. Then holding FUNC and turning it on. You are then in the global parameter menu. If you tap Step5, you can change the tempo range. If step5 LED is lit, you will have what they call "Full Tempo"; meaning 10-600 BPM. If you leave the step5 LED unlit, then you will have "Narrow Tempo"; 56-240 BPM. After you decide which you want, tap REC to confirm and save, or PLAY to cancel.

You can achieve this same effect by turning on the LOOP function on the chosen sample and adjusting the START POINT and LENGTH knobs until it's just looping a very small sliver over and over again. It is less cumbersome this way

Nice. Useful for live performance or recording some creepy effects. Can something similar be done with the TE PO-33?

We haven't tried it yet with the PO-33, but the PO-35 Speak definitely has a granular sound.

nope, you can't edit the start point while playing.

While you can't edit the starting point while playing, as mentioned above, you can while in trim mode which in my experiences creates some very fun "granular" mangling 😄

I'm pretty sure you can even go up to 600 bpm. Have a look on the global settings: ua-cam.com/video/9CtGkUciIZs/v-deo.html

Tomislav Primorac turn the volca on with FUNC pressed. Then unlit button 5. This should turn full tempo range on

@@tomislavprimorac5838 It's a Global Parameter setting, check the chart in the manual for this, and other useful Global settings.
