i'm a new volca sample user, and i was see dozens of videos with cool patterns and i had crack my head thinking how they do it with only one bar. And now i found this. Bro, really thanks! i know this is a 4 year old vid, but really, REALLY thanks!
I've had a volca sample for 2 YEARS. and today is the day that I learned about Song Mode, despite playing it and watching numerous videos about it. Thanks man!
Thanks. This was really useful. Like someone below said the manuals for these things are shite. You buy a toaster with a 50 page manual - it browns bread. You buy a piece of kit that needs programming and you get next to nothing. WAKE UP KORG!
I just wish they would have given us sequences lengths that would be useful for creating a whole song, like 200+ bars, I feel like flash ram is so cheap these days, that it would have been no issue. Even better would be a microSD slot to store them.
Right on! I knew this little machine had to do it somehow. So glad you figured it all out and put this up for us. Do us a favor and leave this video up.
I just got my hands on one of these Doug so yours and a few other demos have come in very useful. The paper documentation that comes with it is enough to put anyone off! Seasons Greetings to you, Jo and family. Cheers. Lee
@@TheSoundTestRoom cripes! Five months ago and I’ve barely used the thing! Now that I’m setup with sample, bass and drum in a rack together with a volca mix in all set for a weekend of experimentation, so I’m just checking out tutorials again to whet my appetite. Thanks again Doug. Cheers. Lee
Thanks a bunch! Been trying to figure out the Songmode on my Volca for ages. I think that the bad manuals by Korg are a big reason why people don't get the full potential out of these things. They get frustrated and they sell them. Bought my Bass second hand earlier this year. The seller had no complaints about the sound, so why he sold it? Because the programming was a pain in the ass. Luckily there's guys like you, who upload videos like these!
Really? The Volca Bass is the eastiest piece of gear I've ever touched. I do agree that the manuals don't cover everything and in the case of the Sample this might really hold people back.
Hi Doug, it's soooooo great to have you and your helpful Videos. Thanks a lot for your help. Volca sample is such a GREAT JOY. And with your help i learn better english and to use my gear and iPad. Again, thank you. So i will pay my little obulus on patreon with joy in my heart.
Thank you mate ! Just bought that little fellow like an hour ago and already have a 4 part drum and bass song (3x patter 1 ; 1x patter 2) and I got to say big thanks !
That is pretty cool, you can have 16 different measures set up, running in song mode using active step, mix and match them with one hand then hit play to have them cycle in different combinations. I really just wish you could have active step work for different parts within a pattern, in all the others you can make poly rhythms that never repeat by taking off one of two steps from just the kick, in the sample active step cuts the whole pattern link, all the parts are locked...that's super frustrating
Hello, merci pour cette vidéo, c'est je pense le tutoriel le plus clair sur le song mode du volca sample (pour peu que l'on comprenne l'anglais). merci encore ;-) ps: i like your accent.
I bought the Volca Sample (rather than a drum machine) to make drum tracks to practice rhythm guitar to but without figuring out SONG mode it's pointless. Metronomes are boring 😃 So, thanks a lot for putting me back on, err, track!! 😀 (Well, until the middle finger of my fretting hand has healed...literally, but that leaves me time to play with beats.)
Hey! I'm pretty new to the Volca, and i was wondering if you could make a follow up video or videos explaining how to use all the tools the Volca has to offer?
While you are picking the patterns and sequences in song mode is there a way to quickly listen to it without leaving song mode in case you forgot what it sounds like ?
Ugh, its never easy, i watched this last night, got all excited to use my new knowledge to create songs with my volca sample 2, then when i try to, i realise that this is volca sample 1, and apparently theyve changed up how to use song mode on the vs2, so now i feel back to square one as there doesnt seem to be any clear tutorials like this for the vs2. Any suggestions/advice?
Is it possible while in play mode switching from pattern to pattern that the Volca can finish it's pattern 1st before switching to new pattern? sometimes i switch to new pattern and it reacts right away, i wish the pattern would finish it course and then go to next pattern as i choose..Can the Volca Sampler do that?
"presuming that you've already know how to basically build a beat" - could you have any video tutorial about it? I mean not particularly on an instrument, but theoretically how a song build?! And then according to one instrument, eg. this Volca or Pocket Operator or any step-in equipment.
I can't seem to find all the sequences I make. So I save something to Key 1 and then it'll random be set to 02.06 and then some of the others I've made I can't find at all Edit: I've re-watched and think this is a missunderdtanding on my part. However I seem to just be missing some or pattern 3 is in spot 4?
I have a tr-08 and tb-03. I’m looking to sync in some sampled sequences ( like blips, blops, woobles and noisey bits) would this be a good fit y’all? Thx for the vid too man✊
Hi, it's a 1/8 Stereo Mini Jack in the Volca headphone socket, the cable splits into two 1/4 mono sockets, that go into your Audio Interface here is a link to Amazon to a cable like the one I'm using www.amazon.co.uk/Gold-Plated-Splitter-Housing-Theater-Amplifiers/dp/B0768BBJ9T/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1531494242&sr=8-14&keywords=1%2F8+stereo+to+1%2F4+inch
So I am watching this video hoping to see how to string along all the songs...so it plays each one back to back to back. But it appears that isn't possible. Dang!
So is "Song Mode" a bit of a misleading term then? Because (let's say) a song is 4 minutes.... well you can't fit 4 whole minutes of sequencing on this machine right? You can only do 16 patterns in a row. So essentially it will allow you to go up to 16 patterns (each with 16 beats in them). Am I understanding this correctly?
Yes, that is correct. What I do is make all the patterns that I use in one song. And then, in active step mode, I switch patterns on and off. So, unfortunately, you cannot program whole songs. There's still some work to do...
The length of the song in minutes/seconds is going to depend on the tempo. But given that each sequence of 16 steps is usually one bar of music (four beats), and that you can chain 16 sequences into a "song", it appears that a "song" is limited to being 16 bars long.
Doesn't work on the Sample 2 unfortunately. Apparently they increased the number of loops you can save so all it does is load another loop when you press "memory" + "M 11" on the keyboard.

How do you save your beats from volca sample to youre computer? For example, i made a beat and i want to upload it to somewhere.
You will need to hook up the headphone output to an Audio Interface so you can record the audio directly into your DAW
Third party software can save your samples and sequences Just google volca third party
Great Tuto and big big thanx dude :D another question wat a cable you use to have that stereo sound directley in Daw for ex in rec ?

Sample rate is 31,250 Hz.
Is there a song mode in Volca Sample New Generation as well? There is Active Step but it doesn't work like in this tutorial. :(

Doesn't work on the Sample 2 unfortunately. Apparently they increased the number of loops you can save so all it does is load another loop when you press "memory" + "M 11" on the keyboard.
when I press memory, it says load, not song....
