I found Son House's music after I saw the movie ' Crossroads', and then bought the complete recordings of Robert Johnson, leaned to play like him ( best I could,) then reading the letter inside the CD case I read that Mr. House was one of the older guys Robert always went to to listen and learn . Johnson being so much a part of my playing I thought " if Son House was an influence, I gotta hear him." It wasn't easy back then before everyone had a computer, the Internet for public still in infancy, no Google, no UA-cam, to find stuff like this, I bought a 64 Stratocaster from an older cat, we got to talking musicians and he was well versed in all that I wanted to be, actually had. Vinyl of most artists, not Son House , but we travelled to his friends home, who was trying to amass a record setting library of blues, r and b, soul, funk, anything that was artists that were fastly becoming lost and unknown then, he had everything from CDs to the old tubes for phonographs 72's, big 10" ers, he let me take a reel to reel of Son House, said if I brought it back properly, he'd let me take something else, and that's how I learned of 99% of my influences and since then I've acquired a 1934 National , plus a few wooden resonator guitars and dobros, he, and others from his era , delta blues, chitlin circuit, completely changed my understanding, likes, view of music.
Watched this a thousand times and don't know how he picks them notes out with that technique and the heart beat sound withe that feeling you get when you get bad new s
One Sunday mornin after church my mom died in my hand an when the doc an nurse came to me in the room they said they did all they could an after they left I couldn't even talk on the phone to tell my dad where I was to come an get me an see her for the last time.
When listening to this masterpiece, always remember to thank Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson who helped Son House revive his art and come back to the stage to play this amazing song for us.
I got a letter this morning, how do you reckon it read? Say, "Hurry, hurry! The gal you love is dead." I got a letter this morning, I say how you reckon it read? It say, "Hurry, hurry! mmm 'cause the gal you love is dead." You know I grabbed up my suitcase, took off down the road When I got there, she was laying on the cooling board I grabbed up my suitcase, I said I took off down the road I said when I got there, mmm she's laying on the cooling board Lord, I walked up close, I looked down in her face She's a good old girl, got to lay her to Judgment Day I say I walked up close, I looked down in her face I say she's a good old girl got to lay her to Judgment Day Lord I fold up my arms, I slowly walked away I said, "Farewell, Honey, I'll see ya Judgement Day!" I fold up my arms, ah yes, I walked away And I said, "Farewell, farewell, hmm, I'll see you Judgement Day!" You know, I went in my room, and I bowed to pray But the priest came along, and drove my spirit away I went in my rules, yeah, I bowed to pray I said, well, the blues came along, and drove my spirit away You know, I thought I'd never love but four women in my life My mother, my sister, dead gal, and my wife I thought I'd never love, and I said, but four women in my life I said my mother and my sister, my dead gal, and my wife (You know, looked like 10,000 people Were standin' around the buryin' ground I didn't know I loved her, until I let her down Looked like 10,000 standin' around the buryin ground You know I didn't know that I loved her UntiI I began to let her down) You know I didn't feel so bad Till the good Lord turned me down I didn't have a soul to throw my arms around I didn't feel so bad until the good Lord's son went down I say I didn't have a soul to throw my arms around You know I's cryin' last night, the night before I'm gonna change my way of living So I won't be crying no more You know I cried last night, I said, all the night before I said I'm gone change my way of living so I won't cry no more (You know it's so hard to love when someone don't love you Don't look like satisfaction, don't care what you do It's so hard to love someone that don't love you You know you don't get no satisfaction Don't care what you do You know love had a fault Make you do things you don't want to do Love sometimes leave you feelin sad and blue Love had a fault, make you do things you don't want to do Love sometimes leave you feelin sad and blue
This is actually a very difficult piece to play on the guitar, compare Son's version to Johnny Winter's version, you'll see Son glides through it while Johnny has some difficulty with it, House was a superb guitar player.
Thank you for saying that. I've always wondered why more people don't notice how good he was as a guitarist or even that he was a guitarist. It seems like everyone raves about him, but this might be the first time that I have heard any real appraisal or discussion of his playing. Even people that make their living from the blues don't talk about it. It's kind of mystifying.

Best comment I’ve ever read.
@@jules8159 thanks I enjoyed living through it more than writing it.
I found Son House after I found Jesus. No lie…..been listening and praying ever since
OMG, this was fantastic! I've never heard of son house before. I absolutely love the blues and this was terrific! That's delta blues no doubt.
He's one of the pillars of the blues, imo... he was one of the mentors to my all-time favorite, Howlin' Wolf.
I've never seen or heard a performance like this before. He's reliving the moment that he heard his woman was dead.
Coolin' Floor, Butcher Shop's drain room.
Great performance, great song

I have a hard time believing that there's a better live perfomance of this song than this one.
Extremely talented, and very creative and enjoyable!!

Did it save a wretch like you?

You know I didn't feel so bad
Till the good Lord turned me down
I didn't have a soul to throw my arms around
I didn't feel so bad until the good Lord's son went down
I say I didn't have a soul to throw my arms around
You know I's cryin' last night, the night before
I'm gonna change my way of living
So I won't be crying no more
You know I cried last night, I said, all the night before
I said I'm gone change my way of living so I won't cry no more
(You know it's so hard to love when someone don't love you
Don't look like satisfaction, don't care what you do
It's so hard to love someone that don't love you
You know you don't get no satisfaction
Don't care what you do
You know love had a fault
Make you do things you don't want to do
Love sometimes leave you feelin sad and blue
Love had a fault, make you do things you don't want to do
Love sometimes leave you feelin sad and blue
F*"""ng Beautiful!
With Buddy Guy on backup!
Wow!!!!✨

That beat and rhythm is so driven, relentless..that's the key to it.
