Vocal cord paresis, also known as recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis or vocal fold paralysis, is an injury to one or both recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNs), which control all muscles of the larynx except for the cricothyroid muscle. The RLN is important for speaking, breathing and swallowing.[1][2]
The primary larynx-related functions of the mainly efferent nerve fiber RLN, include the transmission of nerve signals to the muscles responsible for regulation of the vocal folds' position and tension to enable vocalization, as well as the transmission of sensory nerve signals from the mucous membrane of the larynx to the brain.
A unilateral injury of the nerve typically results in hoarseness caused by a reduced mobility of one of the vocal folds. It may also cause minor shortages of breath as well as aspiration problems especially concerning liquids. A bilateral injury causes the vocal folds to impair the air flow resulting in breathing problems, stridor and snoring sounds, and fast physical exhaustion. This strongly depends on the median or paramedian position of the paralyzed vocal folds. Hoarseness rarely occurs in bilaterally paralyzed vocal folds.

I had a cerebral aneurysm and these symptoms describe me. I've never seen anything that describes this situation as well as this vid. I'm wondering if I should see a respiratory therapist instead of speech for shortness of breath. I did see a speech therapist after my aneurysm and my voice and swallowing is better.

Another cause of vocal cords paresis or paralysis is also excessive shouting, because that puts too much stress and strain on your vocal cords.

Can that damage the actual nerves though? I thought it just led to vocal fatigue.

I am suffering from GERD (Acid reflux) from last many years. Whenever I get GERD episode, my throat usually gets swollen and later turns in to pulmonary infection, cough and after a week's suffering the symptoms subsides.
But just today, I consulted ENT doctor as the swollen throat did not reduce even after 1 month.
Through videoscope the doctor detected left vocal cord Paresis.
But doctor could not confidently relate GERD and vocal cord Paresis.
Does anyone any info on this?
Is GERD and Vocal cord Paresis related?

Hello, my mother just had vagal schwannoma surgery 4 days ago. (nerve tumour) Everything else went well, but she is unable to speak loudly and clearly with the voice she had earlier. It's been only 4 days after the surgery; what do you think? Will she be able to get her normal voice back? I am tense right now because I just want her to become normal, no matter what it takes.

Voice changes, including reduced volume and clarity, are common after vagal schwannoma surgery. It's still early in the recovery process, and these changes often improve over time. Your mother's chances of regaining her normal voice are positive. It's important to follow post-surgery instructions, and consult her medical team for guidance and reassurance as needed. Patience and support during her recovery are key.
