That screaming turning into modem sounds was a really nice effect.

Notice how he says "its cold" when referring to the liquid covering his body? He wakes up in liquid, so the feeling he was feeling was actually from the pod he was in. Cause he gradually got his sensations from the real world.

An interesting piece of foreshadowing in this scene: everyone talks in Alice in Wonderland references throughout the movie; follow the white rabbit, the rabbit hole, the mirror itself. However, Cypher drops a Wizard of Oz reference here, which implies that he's the odd one of the group and later ends up being the traitor.
Intentional or not, I think it's a great detail.

I never realized this but the mirror aspect of this scene follows the reverse Alice in Wonderland motif of the movie where, instead of going through the looking glass and traveling to a fantasy world, the looking glass travels into Neo’s body and wakes him up from the dream world into the real world.

I watched this as a kid and had nightmares for weeks. Safe to say my mum didn’t let my uncle babysit my brothers and I anymore haha
Lots of people talk about the action and groundbreaking visual effects, but if you ask me, what really made this movie so special was the storyline, the mysteriousness, the incredibly well defined characters, the dialogue that's pure perfection, the acting, the steady, deliberate incredibly artfull cinematography, (no b.s. shaky cam nonsense and every frame is an art piece that communicates a story) the music (which is near perfection) and overall atmosphere and vibe. The action and visual effects were simply the icing on an already outstanding masterpiece.

Warner Bros was always to me one of the most artistic of the big studios.. the whole company actually. The record division with just signing Mr. Bungle alone let me know how seriously they took out-of-the box thinking to new levels throughout the 90s.

This was so mind blowing when I saw it in the theatre. Seriously, if there was ever a movie I would love to erase my memory of and watch again for the first time it is The Matrix.

That is DEFINITELY not what the matrix was about, seeing as the film was produced by two trans ladies and revolves heavily around the idea that fate is controlled by man, not the other way around. These are two things that run directly counter to christianity

The parts where all the hoses/connecting tubes "pop" from his skin along with the one at the base of his brain still makes my skin crawl to this day. That has to hurt like no other pain imaginable.

I feel this is one of the most underappreciated aspects of the whole film. Its some seriously awesome body horror going on. The shot a little later on in the film of a baby in a pod is so shocking too and barely gets mentioned

I think it may be for disposal when humans die of old age. I don't think people die even if they die from something other than natural causes in the matrix since that would be pretty inefficient for the machines.
My headcanon is that the crappy human neural rigs don't have enough power to stop someone from dying irl if they die in the matrix.
In two of the Animatrix shorts this is precisely what happens. One person is the character "Kid" who actually shows up in Matrix Reloaded. The other is a sprinter who pushes himself past his physical limit during a race and unintentionally unplugs himself. Surprisingly the sprinter doesn't get ejected into the sewers but instead gets put back to sleep.

Imagine waking up out of nowhere in a test tube tank, miles up on one of those power towers looking down and seeing thousands of people still connected. Actually, the Matrix has many ties to Christianity. This scene depicts when a man is born-again. Neo was always alive (but only naturally) just like how most people in the world are always alive but only in the flesh. However, in order to see things as they really are, by the Spirit of God, a man must be born-again as Jesus puts it in John 3. Only then is a man awakened and has past from death unto life.

Funny thing is that humans become truly "self aware" when they first realise that their reflection in a mirror is not real. In a way, this scene where Neo's reflection in the mirror getting distorted is a way of saying that he's truly become self aware as he wakes up, since his reflection isn't actually real, but just the Matrix all along.

Nothing, the pill he have is not only the tracker but also drug awakening his mind that he can get into surrealism and awake. He would not touch the mirror then he would stand and started seeing something or interact with something else in that room and result would be the same.
The pill is disrupting his mind's connection with the matrix. Imagine like you're in a video game and you start lagging and you see everyone running in a straight line not reacting or objects spinning mid-air but from the perspective of everyone still connected to the server you just froze up, until you disconnect.
Neo "falls through" one of these tears in reality or rather it envelops him.

The machine probably just thought it not important enough to just kill him and that flushing him would be enough.
@@jordanlowrie4874 It's part of the plan. The machines know that's Neo. The one to reset the Matrix. Killing him would wreck the plan of resetting the Matrix.
As you can see in Matrix 3, humans have never been a threat for the machines, so no need to kill them directly. Plus you got flushed away and you don’t know how to swim, so you’re suppose to die drowned.
Machines just don’t see humans as a threat.
I think at that point the machine saw no purpose in him. Just like when we throw out a bad battery.
This scene is an example of spectacular cinematics and plot writing. You can see the confusion in Neo's face upon hearing the bizarre answer Morpheus gives him about the "pill" that he swallowed. I also like the point where Neo's carrier signal connecting his brain to the Matrix begins to be disrupted resulting in him receiving conflicting signals that result in his mind to drift in and out of the world of The Matrix and the Real World hence the cracks in the mirror disappearing then covering Neo's body after he touches it, reflecting his surroundings, while giving him odd sensations such as that "cold" feeling.

I remember in 1999 seeing this in theaters the same day as The Phantom Menace and the part where the robot unscrews the plug from the back of his head actually made me cry and I had to leave the theater lol.

It scares me to go there, but it could be likened to sneaking off of the plantations. While a slave may have had some semblance of provision for in the cabins, northward was a route littered with uncertainty, to say the least.

Every. Every second of this movie is EPIC.
Everytime I watch this scene I think "How convenient that when you leave the matrix you are simply flushed into a big unprotected vat where other freed humans can collect you" But then i remember- that was the whole point. They were freed to balance the system. Really if the humans asked themselves why they weren't killed the second they were of no use to the machines, they might have been more wary.
@magicblanket What about Morpheus's realationship with The Oracle. How do they explain WTF she is she isn't plugged in or nothing. Why would morepheous believe anythign she says.
Even if you freed yourself from the matrix, you don’t know how to swim, so yeah machines don’t need to kill you because you will die drowned.
Plus humans have never been a threat for the machines, in Matrix 3 they easily destroy everything, they only survive because of Neo.
Why kill something that poses no threat , and can be recaptured at a later time .
Second explanation could be they simply hacked the machines.. they did need his location and everything
Maybe it's a leftover of the original programming and the machines can't actively kill "pod people".
Supervising cryosleep or smth similar might have been an original task of the AI.
For all the people saying "body heat for energy" makes no sense or is inefficient, you're totally right. The Wachowskis originally wanted it to be "brains for computing power" but they thought it would be too difficult for audiences to grasp immediately. It's just a plot device, nothing symbolic or otherwise.

I remember being in the supermarket and waiting on my parents (I think I was 10 when I saw it in 2000). In their small, 2 shelves movie section mixed with CD's and kitchen stuff there was a small, 5-inch TV playing this movie, and the wake-up sequence gave me chills and my legs were shaking - but not from fear. I remember this scene so clearly and it stuck with me for over 12 years when I finally got to see the whole movie.

I saw this movie when I was 7, it completely blew my mind and stuck with me for years until I eventually saw it again. I didn't remember everything but I remembered the really trippy scenes like this one.
First we saw Neo running like Gollum from the agents in his office. Now we see Neo become Gollum. Full circle and it's only been about half an hour

0:34-1:27 I saw this movie for the first time when I was 7 years old. I didn't understand anything, so it was mostly the visuals that stuck with me. This is one of the scenes that stuck with me the most. For years, before I eventually saw it again, when I thought of this movie I thought of this scene first. To me the feeling of unreality that you would feel if you saw this happen, is what defined this entire movie.

How I wish I was of age to watch this at the cinema, with a mind ignorant of everything. I saw this movie today for the first time, at 26. It still blew my mind, one of my best cinematographic experience without a single doubt. But damn, how I wish I was 26 in 1996, sitting in a big room in a cinema, watching this with absolute horror and awe.

This is one of the rare sci fi movies where everything that is told is actually possible.
When this movie came out there were still no Facebook and internet on mobile phones that told you everything months before. I went to see it with friends thinking it could be anything: at first I thought it was an action movie! And then ... this scene. You don't get this feeling anymore.
This is a movie you have to watch at least 3-4 times. A masterpiece.

@The One Who Laughs Pretty sure that the machine just assume they wash down anyway, muscle atrophy would prevent them to survive in the water or anywhere else. Their body is so weak when they get disconnected. They use the remains to feed the ones that are alive.

I remember watching this the first time. After the first cut to the real world, it took me a few moments to process wtf I'm witnessing. It was completely outside of anything shown in the movie until that moment.
I love Morpheus’s delivery and character. So cool. Probably my favorite movie of all time if i had to pick ONE film only.

It's Christmas 1999 in my last year of school. Nobody wants to do any work at Christmas, so the teacher brings in a movie to keep the class happy, which just happens to be The Matrix. This scene plays out and one of the girls (One of the really stupid ones) says out loud "I don't get it? So he wasn't actually real?"

Man... this is a masterpiece 100 years into the future from now, IF NOT 1000. Such movies aren't talked about often now, because they are so good they are just too close to our heart. Everything else may be best, but this? This is on a different level. Such movies are rare now. I guess The Matrix simply stands out. Like Michael Jackson concerts when they happened.
