When I got the S9, I didn't sit at a table and talk about it.. I didn't get on the computer and talk about it.. I simply WENT OUTSIDE and SHOT w/ it, then uploaded and shared the results. There's too many people on here looking at spec sheets and running super fast to the keyboard to talk bad about it, without ever shooting with it. The S9 is thee most fun I've had in a LONG time with a camera, and the Lumix Lab feature is not only a GAME CHANGER, it has been a WORKFLOW CHANGER. I don't spend any time editing anything. I have been getting it SOOC and that is a major plus for me. Thanks for just going outside to shoot Josh, and letting the results speak for themselves.

I don’t have an S9 but did have an S5 and S5II and it’s the only camera you can get true film emulation on in camera on photos, Fuji is fine and looks nice but they are glorified camera profiles with a grain feature. Being able to exactly emulate something like Kodak Vision 3 500t and bake it into photo and video is incredible.

    • @TopshelfJunior

@@Jacobyfilms Exactly ! RTL feature is legit ! On the S9 right now I'm running Kodak Vision 5274, Eastman 5247, Fuji Eterna 8563, and Fujifilm Super F 8552. All based on the Alexa Mini sensor. They look pretty good. And I tell people all the time.. The film simulations on Fuji cams are just "tweaks".. Whereas the Panasonic LUT system allows LOOKS and "WORLDS." Big difference.

I’ve been using my S9 non stop. The “limitations” are something the internet made up so they could keep their keyboard warrior status rather then actually pick up their camera and go shoot. I’ve shot professional work for global brands on S9, I’ve filmed full length UA-cam videos with talking head (simply pressing the record button again when the record limit was looming…😅). Also the battery life as you mentioned is amazing for what it is. Great review. Corfu looked amazing… but that dive does need work 😘

Would you be nicer about my dive if I told you I'd already had 4 beers and a glass of wine by that point?😉😂 I won't be going to the olympics anytime soon though, that's for sure!
It's so true dude, people were so quick to swat it down because they just want the full-featured flagship to be here, when in reality, I probably only use 30% of the features that my S5IIX has! Anything more for me would honestly be overkill at this point. It's cool that you still shoot your UA-cam vids and client work with the S9! I haven't made it that far yet as I still rely heavily on my S5II and S5IIX, but there's literally no reason why it wouldn't do a great job for me too. Recording time limits only matter when you're not close to the camera to start that recording up again, but realistically I'm never more than an arms length away from any camera I use when I shoot.
Thanks for watching dude! Let's mount our S9's to a nice car when I come over to Calgary 🥳

This same theory applies to my GX85, accept it has unlimited recording and no heat issues (that i've experienced) BUT is a super sweet price point.
Limitations, hell yes, low light and autofocus isn't it the best.
I have S5ii and S5 bodies as the work horses, GX85 for personal digital stuff and a 'D' camera for weddings if needed in an extreme case.
S9 too expensive and limited for what I want (personally).

I've never bought into the supposed limitations people have slapped on the S9. I shot a feature film with the GH5, and I never used the headphone jack. As a narrative filmmaker, I don't shoot long clips. So, I'm not affected by recording limits. Basically, I guarantee you I can shoot a feature film with the S9 if I wanted to. If I can do it with the GH5. I can do it with the S9.

It's the same thing with the whole AF argument as well. I used the OG S5 for every single paid shoot I did over the course of a few years, and it didn't stop me from getting great results. First. The image is brilliant. Best looking image I've seen in a camera in long time. It's smooth but not blurry. Film like.
For a travel camera it looks amazing, but a travel camera should make economical sense. I mean. I just bought a 360 camera for 220 bucks because I can go into the water with it, walking around everywhere and every time I watch the footage I can watch it from a different perspective and maybe see something new. If you are going to use S9 for personal use then it makes more sense. If you are going to use it more in a professional setting then there is some limitations, but I don't think any of these limitations are deal breaking. It's just too expensive for it to have these limitations.

I think this is a genius camera. Definitely didn't understand it at first, but now I can't wait for it to come back in stock here in Toronto. Need to get my hands on it first before pulling the trigger. For artist work where they need to post about a concert in... 20 minutes, or anything quick and quality for that matter, It's a no brainer. Then switch to the s5iix for any shortcomings. It seems like Lumix keeps coming up with amazing features, in camera, and software. That and every week having a live stream that you can ask questions and learn new things, it's an unbeatable brand IMO. For all that and for how small and damn fun it looks. Great video my man

    Good videos Josh ..
Said it form the start that the S9 is for traveller's and volggers who want a good camera that footage or pic can be editing using their phones. It was never a cameras for weddings or big project's. For most UA-camrs the S5ii/x or the GH6 GH7 or G9II has codecs that they will never use so most of the camera is wasted.

      @JoshCameron  4 місяці тому

I agree completely - while I love the features in my S5IIX, I barely use the RAW recording function and I probably use the ProRes maybe once a month at the most. A lot of these cameras have so many amazing features that won't really get used day-to-day, and that's why the S9 does the job for me in a lot of use cases :)

    • @orinorio1
      @orinorio1 4 місяці тому +1

@@JoshCameron spot on. I had a the same point with UA-camr about the GH7. How while the camera is good most of the specs wouldn't be used. The one thing all Lumix users asked for was 'better auto focus ' . Once Lumix did that everything else is just gravy. Said from the start that the S9 is for none client work and just for volggers or travlers. The GH5 was the benchmark for all mirrorless cameras that came out agtwr it form all the brands. Lumix has set the bench mark for compacted cameras now. The first compacted camera that can be linked straight to your phone. Lumix looked at Gopro and DJi and said let's do a camera that can link to users phone and make an Lumix editing app too.

Great points, well said. Nice coverage of Corfu too! (I live in Athens). I almost bought the S9 upon release but then my X100VI order came through so, well that was that. One of the main reasons I went for Fuji was to simplify workflow, cut out editing (pun intended) and see what all the fuss about simulations were about. Basically I am sick of and resist the editing process to the point I have gazillions of photos buried away on hard drives. Unfortunately enough, I still haven't transitioned and committed to the jpg workflow with the X100VI having shot RAW for so long. However, with the power and accessibility of the S9 LUT system and app, I do think it would be much easier and more fun creatively to make the leap. What do you reckon? If Panasonic play their cards right they really could be on to a winner with the right marketing and direction.

I really dislike the toxicity of some people around new releases like this. I picked up the S9 as a secondary camera & system besides my Canon R6 and I couldn't be happier. Fun little camera with great results out of camera. My collection of L series lenses is great, but for less serious trips and every day use I wanted something smaller and lighter that still feels solid.
The Panasonic LUMIX S line lenses could be a little more compact but they are not only lightweight and performant but also weatherproof (unlike the S9 but Canon would never offer this at this price point). I also fell in love with the silent and fast AF. Canons light and compact offerings only have STM AF, which I absolutely hate. Feels like using ancient tech, especially next to their Nano USM lenses.
Sure, if it was my only camera I may be more critical about not having a EVF, mechanical shutter or hotshoe, but yeah, just get the S5ii if you think it's an issue. I don't get the whining.

Thank you Leon! Appreciate it! I could do, but it would be a very short video! Let me explain here - I used the Real Time LUT function with my favourite Rec709 LUT applied (Neutral V-Log from Phantom LUTs), and then on top of that I had 'Kinetic 2' applied from the Kinetic LUT pack on Gamut.io, and that was dialled back to 40%. The Neutral V-Log LUT was at 100% intensity though, and of course, I was shooting with V-Log as my colour profile.
White Balance wise, I flicked between 5500K and 6300K depending on how warm I wanted the final shot to look, and that's about it :)

Saying that the S5ii is a „very big“ camera is a pretty exaggerated statement IMO, especially if you put the same lens on it like you had on the S9. When the S5ii was launched it was one of the smaller FF options, and still it is. Sure, the S5ii & zoom lens combo is still bigger but not thaaat much. (People with bigger hands would even see this a benefit.) I absolutely see the advantages of a really smaller combo (e.g. GX9 & 15mm), but for this you need smaller lenses, too.
I guess that most of the LUT features needed to realise the prompt publication in a consistent look should also be possible with the S5ii, right? I guess the new app will soon be updated for other LUMIX bodies.
So I‘m not complaining so much about what this S9 does not have, despite of suitable lenses to pair with. Comparing with alternatives and looking at the price the S9 does not really stand for what it pretends to be.

I still think all of these points apply with the S5ii which now costs the same as the S9 and you still get to keep all the amazing studio features. The S9 needs to cost 1000 dollars or less. It’s not about the missing features, it’s the price point.

    • @JoshCameron

@@DrWaSaBe The S5II doesn’t have the MP4 Lite Codec, it doesn’t have the advanced Real Time LUT function (only one LUT per time compared to stacking two LUTs and changing intensity), it’s also a much bigger camera, so therefore not as travel friendly.

@@JoshCameron Didn't know it was discounted already there, let's hope the discount comes to other markets too. The MP4 Lite and Real Time LUT with stacking I think is just a firmware update away for the S5 ii and S5 iix. Yep, I know you are not hating on it, I am also not hating on Panny, just a bit disappointed with them. I have been using Panny cameras since the GH3 days and I owned the GH3, GX7, LX100, S5, and now the S5 ii. I was just hoping for a lower price for the S9 as this is the most base-level S camera we will get in a while. It also doesn't make sense once a GX style body comes out (if it ever does), there is barely room in between the S5ii and S9 in terms of pricing. I guess another thing that adds to this sense of disappointment is us GX and LX users have been begging for a new camera for ages but they have totally abandoned those lines, I would have never sold my GX or LX if it was not for the slow AF sadly, really stunning cameras. Btw, your color grading is my fav of all the UA-cam channels.

I think you'll find yourself picking up one over the other if I'm being honest. I have the Ricoh GRIIX as well as the S9, and the Ricoh is left at home most of the time now. I find the S9 gives me the best IQ while also allowing faster and more seamless image transfer/sharing.
It's a solid camera, and if you get a decently compact lens to go with it (like the Sigma I Series 45mm F2.8 for example), then you'll most likely grab for it over the X100VI. I've also owned the X100F and X100V before, and believe it or not I prefer using the S9.

I'm sick and tired about UA-camrs who have been heavily paid by Panasonic still try to verify that this is a camera worth a try. I am in a few Lumix FB groups and Photography groups and no one, NOT ONE person wrote that he/she bought the S9 apart from the YT-ers who got it free.. :D Yeah, would I use it for FREE??? Definitely. Would I use it for paying for it? Definitely NOT!!! And I am a Lumix user myself.

I understand it for people who haven't a S series camera yet, but that's all, yes the S5s are bulkier, but the problem of size mostly comes from the lenses and that doesn't change on the s9, so for S5s users there is no justifying this camera

Hey Robin! Great to hear from you again, how are you? I can totally see where you're coming from. It's definitely a luxury not a necessity if you're already an S5 series owner. I think it's more attractive for those looking for their first 'proper' camera that has all of the features to appeal to fast sharing and no editing etc.
I've been using the S9 more than any of my other Lumix cameras since I got it though, so that's really interesting too. I think I just love how easy it is to get things shot and shared :)

@@JoshCameron that’s best case scenario with this crap. The 4K is even less, 15 minutes lol. These are 2014 specs not 2024.
This is a 500 dollar camera. 10 -20 min record limits, rolling shutter, 4K 60crops, no evf, no mechanical shutter, no hotshoe, no headphone jack, like it’s literally a dji 3 with a bigger sensor but a much shittier kit lens. That’s why it’s worth 500.

What has been revealed is The UA-cam Community is sprinkled with people waiting to complain without any real world usage. Keyboard Analysis with straight negative intentions. Never thought to buy, never had the money on deck to buy but ready to jump in the ring and fight.

This bugs me so much dude - most people hating on cameras nowadays haven't even held one, let alone used it for a day or two. People love controversy, it's in human nature I think. It's more enjoyable to hate on something than let someone else enjoy it, and it's really sad to be honest.

@@JoshCameron So I have 3 - S5 II, 1 - S5 IIX for Weddings and Events and now added the S9 for EDC, Social Uploads. I’ve also connected my Atomos Ninja V to the S9 as an additional body for 4 Full Ceremonies, Speeches (averaging 2 hours approximately with Anamorphic lenses at times for Weddings Prep or B-Roll) - absolutely no overheating, no glitching.
I’m shooting for daily use 65:24, using 4K Live Cropping to mimic Slider Shots. FHD 120fps is clean & useable not as bad as you would expect from all the negative feedback, I’ve definitely cut in footage for feature client films, haven’t heard a peep from clients.
I mean the fact I can grab the S9 that can handle so many applications without me worrying about how I need to rig or carry additional items to get the shot in my head is justification enough. 😂it literally bugs me out when people say Panasonic dropped the ball 🤣 by who’s standards, especially if you can’t come to grips with… every camera isn’t for every person… everyone has their needs and workflow… but I can’t undercut the S9 has been a part of 7 Shoots that has banked me pretty nice in the last 40 days. Along with the fun just capturing Family moments… we have to remember these are all tools.
Side note: Josh have you had the chance to side by side the LUMIX S 18mm vs the Sigma 16-28mm Contemporary. I have both the 16-28 & the 28-70 but I am looking into the LUMIX 18mm & the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 for Travel… but Im dreading purchasing redundancy unless the handling really makes life easy 😅

No ones confused mate, its just plain crap.
Taking a S9 on holiday and shooting where the light is extra bright doesn't make the camera a good one. Go round Corfu's bars and restaurants at night with the S9 and do a review of how it handles then, funny how no one ever does that isn't it.
It's a poor camera, you can't see the screen in good light, and you can't use it at all in low light!!!
And don't even get me started on the rediculous time limits for video.
Give me a S5iix all day every day (and especially in low light)
And the price of the S9 is a joke.
The areas where this camera does perform well are so narrow and niche that it becomes a 3rd or 4th body at the bottom of a huge kit bag, and rarely, if ever gets used.
Put it this way, if you could only afford 1 camera, would anyone buy a S9? No, and that's why neither of my local camera stores are even stocking it.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 місяці тому +2

@@50450720 this comment is just naive to be honest, I feel like you’re just finding any way to be mad about it 😂
Firstly, the S9 features the exact same sensor as the S5IIX , meaning it has the exact same image quality and the same dual native ISO capability, allowing you to get identical results in lowlight.
Secondly, the price was high on release and I’ve never said otherwise, but if the S5II was not insane value for money to start off with , then it wouldn’t seem that crazy. I’ve also seen it for around £1249 new here in England, so that’s not really a crazy amount to ask for considering its features.
I don’t have to keep in Panasonic in my good books; everything I put out and say on this channel is from my own brain, and my own experience.
Calling a camera “crap” when I can guarantee you’ve never even held it is just ignorance. Use it just as I have, for as long as I have, and then come back to me and tell me it’s crap.
You’re arguing over something that is blatantly not marketed towards you, so just move on and enjoy the camera that does suit you.
Thanks for watching though, I do appreciate it. I just wish you fact checked yourself before deciding to put out negativity :)

Your video is ditch. you were only in the shadows. if you stand in direct sunlight, you see nothing. your lens protrudes so much from the camera that you need a large bag. This is absolutely not a travel camera. transferring photos to your phone is just stupid because you can't see anything in direct sunlight on your phone except on the latest Chinese phones at 4500 Nits. So the idea that the influencer can take photos in direct sunlight and transfer them to their phone, then immediately send them to Instagram is completely false. The proof is that you didn't do it in real time. I prefer my vivo x fold 3 pro foldable phone for my travels and real live insta and my s5 when I really have to do Photoshooting...
