  • I robbed the Injector actuation pressure valve from my fl70 to fix the c8500 with the 3116e cat. I went to the cat dealer and got replacement parts. after installing these parts, the old girl ready to bring home some more treasures! you can watch the series of videos on the 1998 gmc c8500 with the 3116e running problems. the link is at the end of the video.

    I agree with you entirely, keeping a clean engine makes it much, much easier to see issues like oil or fuel leaks developing and so it gives you a good heads-up on issues well before they become major or terminal...

    Thank you for your videos. Just fixed a long plagued 3126 with a constant bog.

    Fixing two engines with one new part, even a fairly expensive one, is a pretty good result and a good learning experience. That 3116E may not be a popular engine due to the low power but you never know when another might grace the driveway in another parts truck and if you've done a bit of learning on the likely issues it might mean you can maximise your return potential on the bits you don't need...

    looks EXACTLY like the IPRs off of the power strokes, even the rubber boot on the o-ring end and the electrical connector orientation!

    You are rite it's a 6.4 in my international this truck is a rollback as I am in the wrecker biz actually I am about 70 miles west of johnathan w here in nc but anyhow I bought this truck and so far Thank you Jesus it's been a great truck but kind of like you said on cat I am very picky about maintenance on it but at the same time mindful that people have had problems that stem from the extremely high fuel pressure causing it to make oil diluted with diesal fuel so I change oil frequently and always put a gallon of oil treatment in at oil change and I also refuse to run the truck hard I may just wait on the fl60 for something else to come along with Cummings or dt466

      Bit Little the regeneration is a huge problem with those 6.4 when the dpf gets dirty it can cause the ecm to be in Regen too long and too often. That can thin the oil and cause lower end problems.

      yes. just like all diesels today, the older ones were much better than the newer ones. i use this freightliner regularly. it has always run well and given me no troubles. however, i change the oil, air and fuel filters more frequently because it is a cat with the hydraulically actuated electronic unit injector or heui for short. it uses engine oil and electric signal from the ecm to control the injectors. the heui pump is supplied with engine oil and increases the pressure from minimum of 500 to around 4000 psi just for the injectors. it puts this high pressure oil into the top section of the injector. that pressure pushes a multiplier piston in the fuel chamber of the injector. that max 4000 psi oil pressure can create fuel pressure of up to maximum of near 28000 psi. this increase in pressure is enough to lift the injector tip from it's seat and spray diesel fuel into the cylinder. this high pressure is necessary to lift seat due to the high compression ratio of diesels. the high compression ratio is needed as diesel fuel is not as volatile as gasoline. diesel use heat and pressure to induce an explosion. there is no electric spark ignition. all of that being said. i am not a diesel mechanic. these are just things i have picked up here and there. i do not have any training on diesels at all. so take it for what it is....just my understanding.

    Much easier access than a 7.3 Navi and the restart was much quicker after changing than any I remember doing.

      man was i surprised it cranked and fired off that fast. i guess that high pressure oil pump is working good. the 7.3 is not as easy for sure. i think the 6.0 is a little harder yet.

    • @kentuckycowboy2
      @kentuckycowboy2 7 років тому

      No doubt, at least they couldn't of fould a harder place to put some of the stuff you have to routinely get to on the 6.0s anyway.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 років тому

      right. you have disassemble half of a 6.0 to get to most of the common failure parts!

      It's easy on the 7.3s when you delete the fuel bowl which is garbage.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 років тому

      if it has a v8, the 2008 international would be a maxxforce 7. that is the same as the ford 6.4. i would take a 3126 over a 6.4 or maxxforce 7 any day. the 6.0 was called the vt365 in internationals from 2003-2007. prone to overheat as you could imagine with such a small hp engine used in such a heavy truck. also , the 6.0 or 6.4 in the pick up trucks were programmed at a higher hp rating than compared to the medium duty truck with the same engines. the pickups were set up with heavy towing being done 50% or less of life of the truck. the medium duty trucks were setup with being at close to the max gvwr the majority of its like. so they backed the hp rating down to increase longevity of the engine. it is common to see a medium duty truck with 400-500,000 miles . in pick up you will see it occasionally but not the majority.

    I have 3126 cat engine crank no start and start for a one second or tow with high RPM if I used starter fluid.
    what is the problem with it ? any help?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  5 років тому

      It takes more info to help. the brief description you gave leads me to suspect low compression but that isnt enough information to tell. is the oil full? does the check engine light come on with the key? does it start when you pull it with something else with the truck in gear? if it starts, does it have a large amount of blowby? did you just buy it and it has this problem or have you owned it for some time and this problem just started? do have any scanners? are you familiar with the huei system? are you able to do a compression test?

    • @thetruth8958
      @thetruth8958 5 років тому

      @@j.c.smithprojects yes the oil full
      yes check engine light on
      I never try pulling the truck with anything because the air brake.
      I got it from auction it was running when I got it they left the truck running for sometime I told them I want to drive it home and I though no gas cause the problem and I got gas for it and still not running.
      no one scan it we live far from big city.
      the previous owner company said nothing wrong with truck the just want to upgrade there trucks .

      it mostly comes down to cost of repair, common problems, propitiatory parts and overall experience with the ones i have had. i have owned many makes of diesels and prefer cummins, international, and detroit. there are other good ones but these are the most popular ones i prefer.

    If it is the same then you should have bought a IH brand, they aren't $200, I paid $150something last time I bought one, connector and all it looks same....
