    £350+ for an 08 shunter is absolute madness =O, I love the uncoupling feature but a £100+ premium for that is nuts

    • @Simon-Davis
      @Simon-Davis 2 місяці тому +7

      Its a £30 premium over the DCC sound version. The sound decoder is a £110 price up, but the decoder alone will cost you £125 to upgrade the DC model with a like for like decoder. To retrofit a DCC operated uncoupler yourself costs £22 (plus postage from the EU, works out to £31 delivered), but thats for Kadee couplers instead of tension locks. I converted a Hornby class 08 to have sound, working lights and working couplers. Including buying the second hand 08 it cost me £360 for all of the parts to do the job, so Bachmanns at £350 is a bargain compared to doing it yourself as you have to tear the model apart and risk ruining it.

      @@Simon-Davis why can’t they do the uncoupled as a DCC fitted option?

      @PlatformONE 2 місяці тому +2

      £350 for a shunter? That's over $680.
      If everyone didn't buy them due to being expensive, then the company will get the message & may (not will) reduce the price. Write to the companies & let them know that I'm no longer going to buy them at that price & let them know you'll pass it on to others.

      @@Simon-Davis yes, but you know how it is, some people just seem to enjoy constantly moaning! I started on 0N30 narrow gauge model railroad layout two years ago - my first ever venture into modern railways. I used to own two UK model shops back in the 80s. But I must say having just started in this hobby relatively recently, I’m staggered at how many in this hobby seem tightfisted, moaning, nitpicky people. If you want model railway manufacturers and distributors to survive, just pay the prices or don’t moan. I don’t believe they’re milking prices, it’s just the reality of a small market place. If you don’t allow them to make profit but just continue to constantly moan; and keep pushing retailers into giving away discounts on relatively average profit margins, the hobby will fail in terms of manufacturing support. You choose!

  • @johnphillipson1107

    Following big losses by Hornby the cancellation of a small coach will not make a huge impact. They appear to be concentrating the future 'away' from 00 and into their TT120 range which is not competing with the big boys who have kept out of this area. It could be the make or break for them I fear.

    • @timharrison2894
      @timharrison2894 2 місяці тому +2

      Agreed. We might grizzle about Hornby, but everyone should want them to do well. I'm concerned TT might kill them off, the market must be tiny compared to oo and even n. I know some will think TT is great, and yes Sam's reviews show they're sometimes great models, but I just can't see it making any financial sense. They should be pouring in to hm7000 and retaining their 00 market share

Looking at the UA-cam video of their open day there's some old school engineering going on which it would be a shame to lose. Fun little fact about the Billinton K class , the Bluebell railway wanted to purchase one for preservation, I believe 32337 however said plans fell through because most of the money at the time was going into restoring the stretch of line that became tue BlueBell .

    Undoubtedly, the best news show on UA-cam. Well done! Cant get so excited about the J27 as you are because I pre-ordered mine in Jan 2020 for £86.50. In the last year I have been asked to agree to the new price of £110 and whilst this is still a very good price, four and a half years for a model not too dissimilar from the J27 is hardly "Premier League" manufacturing. Better late than never, I suppose.

    looking at that LBSC mogul, the handrail knobs look so good, that I might get some as spares from Sonic models!
    The problem with the Dapol A4 is that the cab is just plain wrong with the windows, and detail wise, does worse than nothing to improve upon the good old Hornby model.
    I wish Oxford instead of using the Hornby style crankpins, would use Alan Gibson/Ultrascale style, with a screw from the back of the wheel, with a dedicated bearing and a nut on the outside, as it just looks so much better, allows for less slop in the coupling rods, and is still easy to work on. Hilariously, Heljan seem to be slightly better in this category
    Rapido's LNER Apple Green and boiler bands, while not perfect, are much better than Hornby's unsatisfactory attempts, so congrats to them.
    Thanks Always Sam!

    Another K class model is soon to be delivered around September or October.
    But this one is the HO version of the Australian Victorian Railways K class 2-8-0 by SDS models.
    A huge delay with this as it was originally announced in 2007 by Eureka models. The collapse of the Chinese company doing the work was the start of false starts and wasted effort.
    After the success of their VR D3 4-6-0 , SDS have taken over the project and applied their experience and model shared parts to the project to get it to immenent delivery.
    So many versions of number livery and driving wheel types will be available. Quite a contrast with most UK makers limited options.

    I hate to say it, but Dapol is behind the curve with their smoke generator, now that Hornby is selling the micro-mist smoke generator. Of course, I'm sure Hornby has the rights to that water based device, but I think it's the shape (and the no-smell) of the future. How hard would it be to improve or modify the design to avoid the patent rights Hornby obviously has?
    I'll bet Dapol's trailing truck has flanges.

    I'm very excited for the K Class. Arguably Billington's best design. One almost made it into preservation. It was offered to the Bluebell Railway in the 60s I believe, but due to lacking funds, it was unaffordable and thus the last example was cut up. I want the LBSC umber, but the Malachite green looks stunning as well. Shame about the L&B coach from Hornby. I was really excited to pick it up when it drops. Oh well, I guess I'll stick with my sole 3rd class coach and my old Tri-ang Rocket coaches. Also, just today, the B17/5 in BR black has just been delivered to Rails of Sheffield. It seems to be popular because on Hornby's website the LNER green one sold out already. Will you be reviewing one? I kinda prefer the un-streamlined loco though as personal preference. Thanks for the news episode, as much as the canceled coach upsets me.

    Matte paint on the sharp end of a model locomotive never has been, is not now, and indeed, never will become “A massively ‘premium’ feature’. The reason behind this of course is pretty simple; it’s just matte sodding paint, Sam!! :) :) It is an extremely bright idea though and one that can be achieved for very little overlay.

    Yeah, I’d definitely pay more for a model with keep-alive capacitors, if it’s got a short wheelbase, such as an 0-4-0, or other small shunter. Even if it has the best pickups ever designed, it’s embarrassing to pull out of the passenger yard with a rake of coaches, only to stall out on express points there on the main line! Then you have to hear it from the yard master and the dispatcher as to why you parked your train fouling the main line, when they have a sensitive time-scheduled freight on the way with perishables! 😮

    Regarding the locomotives at 13:59, the paintwork looks, based on multiple aspects of the model design, to be in a 'pre-weathered' state. A number of companies have taken this direction with their offerings, catering to the more serious model railroader, as opposed to the more 'collector' niche that wants their locomotives and rolling stock to maintain an 'as new' type of look to them. It's not a quality issue there, but rather something that's being specifically produced to look like the locomotive (or rolling stock) has actually been doing work, as opposed to having a glossy paint finish that takes on a toy like appearance.

      @@Eric_Hunt194 I agree with this. I think it's what they need to get back to doing. Decent, Affordable trainsets with curated accessory packs to go with them... and remodel the playtrains brand so it runs (and comes with) standard 00 Gauge track....

    Some extra Model Railway News for the modern image scene today was Heljan announcing a OO class 153 & 155, to go along with their O gauge 153 which now has pre-production sample images.

    Damn, shame about the Queen Adelaide saloon getting cancelled; that was the only Hornby release I was interested in. At least the K Class looks promising, and I’ve been considering getting a Sonic Models A5 for a while so the re-release looks promising. I can’t wait for the Locomotion Models J69 either.

    Really pleased about the LBSCR K class - one of the best proportioned steam locos ever, in my opinion.

    I did that calculation on the Dapol A4, Hornby Dublo A4 £320, decent sound decoder for A4 £120 (not HM7000), so the Dapol at £399 is a steal.

  • @JonatanGronoset
    @JonatanGronoset 2 місяці тому

    The Black Lable A4 going for £399 is quite comparable to what you pay for any new Märklin/Trix model, as well as some other european manufacturers these days. You brits have had it easy with fairly low price ranges for a long time. 😉
    You obviously have to review the 02 shunter "SAM".

    I am SO excited by the LBSCR K Class!! I cannot wait for that one!! Only downside for me is that it is an exclusive, and I live in Canada meaning I’ll have to pay international shipping instead of using one of my local retailers that stocks British locos.
    I’m also glad to see the J26 coming along, as well as the B17, and the second batch of A5s.
    I was shocked by the price of the 08 though. I think I’ll try and find a pre owned one…
    I also don’t think the Dapol A4 is reasonably priced. You were comparing it to the Dublo model, which in of its self is very over priced…

  • @dcb_trains

    The Oxford j26 looks great for the price which is something this hobby really needs. Seen the new Bachmann items at the Battlefield line model show weekend just gone. Look good the 08 but pricey

    I would like to see you take a look at a Dapol Black Label A4 to show what a premium model of a UK steam engine is like. How does it compare to Broadway Limited?
    I'd like to see you get one of the EFE mail cars too, as well as the 'Sam' Heljian 02
    Since Hornby has decided not to make the Queen Adeliade coach now, I think you should make a 3D printed version!

    Class 37 for TT-120 might prove a pivotal moment for the scale given what has gone before. I can foresee a significant interest for folk who may prefer other scales for both running and exhibition trying this out for all sorts of scenarios.? And everyone likes a nice 37.!

    Annoyingly I never gave Oxford rail much thought on the back of the Radial tank and early Dean goods having problems. Now I realise they really do offer quality models at affordable prices, maybe I’ll buy the J26 or a later Dean goods.

    The fact is though, the black label A4 has been released before, like 8-10 years ago. So that price seem extortionate. I think £300, still being too much is a little better, but £399

  • @NormalJungle272

    I’m sorry, but £364 for a DIESEL SHUNTER is insane. The 08 isn’t even that big either. Now, I get that it is a new tooling and it has tons of features, but it costs MORE than the Hornby Dublo A4, and the A3, and I though those were overpriced for what you get! (They still are very overpriced). But great video as always Sam, and I really like the B17/5 coming soon!
