New Diamondback SDR Review! On My Table in Florida and Range

- The brand new for 2024, the 357 magnum Diamondback SDR, which stands for Self Defense Revolver. As seen at Shot Show this year, now here in real life for a full review. It has a push button cylinder release, fiber optic 3 dot sights, 6 round capacity, SMOOTH trigger, and a lighter weight than expected. It uses S&W J Frame grips, in case you feel the need to change them, and Hogue makes some to fit.

We definitely need more guns like these, hopefully the quality control is there.
That's wishful thinking
No QC a friend sent his back 3 times with no satisfactory solution to the problem. Traded it for half what he paid.
Love it! Having real sites on a snubby is a great feature. The design ability to remove the cylinder for cleaning is a big plus. Polished stainless always looks even better in person than in video. Looks to be closer in size to my S&W Model 60 than my Ruger SP101 or maybe it splits the difference. For whats offerered on this revolver I'd call it a bargain.
So true! Aways wondered why most snubbies has such crappy sights!
NICE I can't wait I did a breakdown just as it was announcing 4 months ago I can't wait!
Seems like a very nice revolver. 👍
It is a great looking revolver and I love the 6-shots for a j-frame size revolver!!! I wish S&W and Ruger's J-frame revolvers in 357/38 were 6-shot. I love my SP101 and I would love to get a S&W 640 some day, but I would prefer a 6-shot capacity instead of 5 any day. Thank you for this review, I'm adding this one to my wish list!!
Wow! Love the sights and cylinder release! Wonder what the street price will be.
Looks pretty interesting. The more the merrier. It will be interesting to see where they fall in quality and street price.
First person to review this! I’m hoping they give us a 9mm cylinder to pop in this gun. It’s the only logical reason for the added expense and complexity of a removable cylinder on a double action revolver.
If you look closely at the cylinder is labeled 357/38, that tells me they did that with plans of releasing a 9mm cylinder in the future for this as well, makes it easier to identify what cylinder is out of the revolver
9mm in a revolver is no good. You get crimp jump.
I am so glad you are reviewing products for us the Gun community because you are one of the Honest and Best. thanks
Diamondback makes good airboats.
Slight correction: with a transfer bar system, the _hammer_ NEVER strikes the firing pin. It strikes the transfer bar which _transfers_ the energy of the hammer to the firing pin. Hence the name.
The hammer nose ALWAYS lands on the frame of the revolver.
S&W J frame model 637 has a exposed hammer like this Diamond Back. I think this Diamond Back will be a big hit, it sure looks nice and you did an excellent review.
As a Colt revolver guy I really like the rear sights not being adjustable for carry.hope they bring out a 3 and and a 4.25 with same rear sights and id consider adding one.not much of a 2" revolver guy though. Other than that,I like it.good job DB!
Great review! Question ... since the cylinder is so easy to remove, are they planning to make a 9 mm cylinder for it?
If they don't, it would be an EPIC lost opportunity of their part! I even wrote Diamondback asking them to do it, since they only other modern revolver that does it is the Taurus 692, and that is much bigger than the SDR and the 692 is nearly impossible to find in stock anywhere.
I noticed that the cylinder itself is marked ".38/.357." I can't imagine a reason to take the trouble to do this unless they are planning an interchageable cylinder in another chambering. If so, the only logical upcoming offering would be 9x19. I also noticed the recessed charge holes. Nice touch.
Need a 3” barrel !! not a fan of snubbes
I would cross shop this with a Kimber K6xs. That makes it a tough choice for me. The Kimber is listed for $584 at Buds Gun Shop.
This is all-stainless steel, compared to the aluminum K6sx. The stainless K6s would be comparable, and much more expensive.
@@kenhoward3512 I agree, the k6s is the more comparable gun. I like the SDR but it is tough to pay more for it than a Kimber.
@@kenhoward3512 Also the K6S DASA with the exposed hammer. And in the same class as the new series Colt Cobra and King Cobra and discontinued Magnum Carry unicorn.
I wanted to buy a gun from buds but their reviews ate sketchy. What's your thoughts on buds?
I have purchased from Buds before with no problems. They are not always the cheapest but I always price check them along with Grabagun. Hickok45’s channel has a relationship with them.
Much better than plastic guns.
WOW! VERY cool! It's awesome they are producing something like this!
Almost like on Leathal Weapon movie.... somebody almost made a smilyface on the head of tge target. Good way to start Friday. HAMMER TIME! MC Hammer? Nope, Hammer Striker time!
Colt has returned most of there snake guns. I assume they won’t remake a Diamondback since this has the Diamondback name.
Looks a lot like the K6s Kimber
Really looking forward to this one. Especially, with 9mm optional cylinder. A longer barrel would give leaps over the competition, as well: 2.75" to 2.25". Most won't care about an extra 0.25", but for anybody that knows, every little bit helps.
Would like to see a 7-shot, 327 Federal Magnum version. 357 magnum is too stout for a snubbie... and 7 rounds of 327 magnum beats 6 rounds of 38 special.
And maybe 3" also.
It’s not even on the market yet and you are already bitching about it not being a327 mag 7 shot. Can you not just appreciate a new pistol for what it is rather than for what it’s not?

a 3" bbl version would be nice ...
Excellent review! One of your best.
Looks well made and worth a look
How would you compare the trigger to the kimber k6 and the colt cobra/king cobra?
Great...really enjoy your videoes.
Had 2 chances to buy this gun this month. Saw no reviews so I didn't get it. Been wanting it but dB has had issues in the past from what I read. So thanks for the review 💯
from where>>>me thinks your mistaken unless it's right by their factory or something
These are not for sale anywhere yet unless you know somebody at Diamondback
@@DanTheWolfman grabagun had em twice in the last few weeks. Call them to verify. I'm on the notification list

I wonder if they will make a .9mm cylinder for it?
If they don't, they're morons.
As many people have asked that question on almost every social media platform and asked the rep at the shot show counter, if Diamondbacks PR and R&D don't take note and make it happen, they are crazy. 9mm ammo is dirt cheap compared to .38 and .357 at the moment. If DB doesn't do it and soon, I can really see an aftermarket company jumping in and doing it. A 9mm QD cylinder that is reasonably priced I personally believe would put the SDR ahead of just about every other snubby on the market. Korth and taurus make some larger ones, but I don't know of any snubby with that feature. Combine that with it taking interchangeable sights, j frame grips and holsters, being a 6 shot, and having a trigger like that and DB could very well become the Glock of revolvers. The only feature left that I can think of would be a top strap rail for optic mounts.
Love the fact they counter bored the cylinder
Nice looking revolver
❤ good work thank U
I think you will find it is the same size as a Colt D frame. Think the Detective special. I can see see one in my future 😁
That’s a great looking revolver, I d like to see a review once it has a lot of rounds through it
What would make this revolver absolutely awsome would be moon clips.
Did I miss it somehow, or did you not use a trigger pull weight gauge ??
Diamondback did impressive job on this one. 👍🏼👏🏼🤟🏼
But is that just a bit too shiny?
Especially when it's meant for utility, carry, defense, right?
DB have really cool colors on their ARs. Why not do those colors on this revolver?
Awesome looking revolver. Love the sights, too. I wonder what speed loaders work with it.
K6 would be my bet. They are almost identical. The SDR is a hair smaller in every direction. I think the cylinder is a hundredth of an inch smaller.
hey i want one of those
Didn't know UA-cam University added a course in expert Gunsmithing. For all the naysayers, just be thankful that a company such as Diamondback exists and builds quality firearms. To ALL of the "experts" telling others what's best for the masses, your opinion is no more right or wrong than anyone else's. @Hammer Striker, I appreciate your comments and what I believe is an unbiased review.
Looks okay, I guess. But this thing will need to prove itself through LOTS of reviews, before I'd consider this at the price they are asking.
I'm liking it ...
👍🏼👏🏼🤟🏼 Seems really well made, unlike Taurus with all them sharp edges/corners (a real hazard).
I have a Taurus snubbie and i do like them a lot (their design and more affordable. Just their sharp edges i must call out).
My concern is you have a J frame sized cylinder chambered for 6 rounds of 357 magnum, so compared to the SP101 which is 5 shots there appears to be a lot less metal around the chambers, especially with the SDR having a fluted cylinder. How is the SDR going to stand up to hot 357 loads?
this is really a Colt D frame size gun , not a S&W J frame size. just like the Kimber K6.
I noticed that; much less meat in the cylinder. 🧐 Good for mild .357 Mag loads at the most, perhaps... And yes, the SP101 (even though only a 5-shot) is probably one of the only small framed revolvers out there that's truly capable of a steady diet of full-power Magnum loads.
Would love to have one
Yeah, ... "That's Not Super Inexpensive".
rather just get a Taurus .... or 2 Tauri for that price.
Nice - may need to get this as a BUG. The capacity of 6 rounds is superior to 5. Anyone I know that has been in a shoot out never said "I didn't need that many rounds."
every body always calls these J frames. but like the Kimber K6 , these are really closer to COLT D frame size guns.
I really like the sites, the metal isn't smooth really, they didn't sand it enough before polishing it out but for the price point that's to be expected. I have many J frames already and doubt I would like shooting .357 magnum but a defensive gun doesn't need to be comfortable to shoot. Thanks for the review.
Nice.
Looks like a Kimber k6s
I see that S&W J grips fit, what about speedloaders? K frame or Cold D frame?
very nice gun review as always! Blessings to you and your family Sir.
I’d throw some uncle mikes combat grips on there and it’d be perfect
Wow.
Frickin DIAMONDBACK just rolled in and handed Smith and Ruger their asses.
Revolvers are cocked with the support hand. 🙃
The grip needs to be slightly longer. I don’t like my pinky in outer space. Maybe offer the Hogue longer grip as an option?
When is it going to be available?
How is the lockup. I know Smith and Ruger types of lockup and this looks great but know nothing about it. The better the way a company builds the cylinder locking mechanism turns me on because if it’s great than won’t have issues later on.
I like it,, man they done a good job
I know you're a well experienced shooter but Good God Man that's a handful holding on too ! It's a very good looking revolver, beautiful finish, it needs a full three finger grip for sure, it damn near went airborne ! NO THANKS ! I'd rather have 15 rds that I can control better.
She is a beauty!
I love my J-Frame S & W, 38 +P but this little revolver has me questioning my purchase. 6 shots vs 5, not only will it fire anything my J-Frame can fire but it's also can shoot .357 through a 2" barrel vs the Smith's inch and seven eighths inch barrel. With barrels this short, that extra one eighth of an inch could go a long way in bragging rights. As far as the Hillary Hole, that can be remedied with an inexpensive part called a "Bill Insert."
Very reminiscent of a Kimber K6 DASA.
Poor man's Kimber K6S.
Love it. I'll buy anything but S&W.
Looks similar to my Kimber K6S DASA.....just saying....
The sp 101 is 700 hundred dollars brand new
👍🏻👍🏻
Can I get it in three inch?
I'm in my Elmer Fudd years and only buy vintage Smith's. Almost nothing made today is worth buying to me.
I'm with you, Brother...this revolver has some nice features, but I'll stick with my old S&W 2 1/2 inch Model 19....
Need a DAO model. Hammers on snubs is just silly.
4 inch barrel would be perfect
Where is this revolver made ?What country?
USA made in Cocoa, FL.
@@DiamondbackFirearms like it says on side of the revolver

👍👍🇺🇸
If it had a red dot mount I’d buy it no questions asked
Ok???
Is this the only guntuber that was allowed to review this gun?? Strange…. Every other video is from Shot Show
Dont need it, already have more than a few small edc revolvers that are hopelssly obsolete and regressive and we're told that semiautomatics are superior technology. But I'm sold, looking forward to retail availability.
There isn’t much meat in those cylinder walls.
A little too pricey for what it is in my opinion.
$777 sounds pricey for a brand like this. If I’m paying over $750, it better be a a proven revolver and a big name. I can get an sp101 for around $600.
I just bought one of these on Gunbroker for $659. June 28.
777 - that is indeed an unlucky number. Even if they sell for $600, I will never consider buying one. Not a first time entry into the market, and from a manufacturer known for low-end guns. Not a chance, no way in hell. What WERE they thinking??!!!
You must be a boomer.. things cost money these days!
@@Tom-cp6yj YOu can get two Tauri for that price. Or two used S&Ws
@@Tom-cp6yj I've handled their guns. They are trash. You go ahead and drop $6-700 on trash if you like. Trash purchased at a high price is still trash.
looks like they copied Kimber's revolver...
Love your reviews, but $6-700 for handgun is pretty high priced for most people. It is priced directly equal to steel j frame smiths. So you can either buy the gold standard smith and wesson that has been proven for what? 70 years? Or, for the same price, you buy a newly designed revolver from a budget gun company that is not even at the level of kel tec...
Maybe it's a good revolver, maybe it's even better than a smith...but i can tell you that i will never know that one way or another and neither will most people that are in the market for a snub revolver.
And i'm just putting this out there as constructive criticism for the company.... take it or leave it.
154 years
@@telesniper2 ... They haven't been making j frames for 154 years... I think they introduced the j frame in the early 1950's.
@@curly__3 Ah well S&W has been making centerfire revolvers for that long, that's what I meant
A 357 S&W snub-nosed revolver is above the $1K price, so expensive is relative.
@@richerich853 no they're not... You can order 357 s&w snubbies for S6-700 all day long. Same with kimber and ruger. Diamond back isn't exactly known as some kind of premium brand either... They are right between high point and kel tec in my book. That revolver needs to price point around S275 to sell.
That gun looked REALLY JUMPY in your shooting. I'd hardly call that easy recoiling.
Have you ever shot a 2" .357 magnum revolver?
Doesn't look bad for a first attempt. I don't need nor want a .357 Magnum chambering though. No, thank you.
The only benefit to this revolver like any other revolver is you can use .38. No one in their right mind will fire full house .357 mag out of this revolver.
I EDC a LCRX in 357 with Barns 140gr 357 ammo. The key is to practice and train with your EDC..
Why all the talk and never showing us the hammer? Review a weapon without a complete tear down is lame
Looks really cheap
I don't believe these will be any better quality than something like a Taurus or a charter arms. Fun for the range but it's foolish to bet your life on one.
None in stock anywhere
Been waiting for these to be available for months
Casting and finish looks very cheaply done. I'll stick with the Kimber.
