  • Hey Everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today we are talking about tick borne diseases in the dog. These are the sickness or illnesses that a tick gives a dog after drinking their blood.
Tick-borne diseases in dogs are a group of illnesses caused by various pathogens transmitted through tick bites. These diseases can be quite serious and may affect a dog's health if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Here are some common tick-borne diseases in dogs:
Lyme disease: Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, primarily the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis) in North America. Symptoms in dogs may include lameness, fever, lethargy, swollen joints, and loss of appetite. Treatment typically involves antibiotics.
Ehrlichiosis: Ehrlichiosis is caused by the bacteria Ehrlichia canis, Ehrlichia ewingii, or Ehrlichia chaffeensis. It is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, such as the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus). Symptoms can include fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, swollen lymph nodes, and bleeding disorders. Treatment involves antibiotics and supportive care.
Anaplasmosis: Anaplasmosis is caused by the bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum or Anaplasma platys, which are transmitted by infected ticks, including the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus). Symptoms may include fever, lethargy, joint pain, anorexia, and occasionally bleeding disorders. Treatment typically involves antibiotics.
Babesiosis: Babesiosis is caused by protozoan parasites of the Babesia genus, such as Babesia canis and Babesia gibsoni. It is transmitted through tick bites, including the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) and the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis). Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may include fever, anemia, lethargy, pale gums, and dark urine. Treatment involves a combination of medications, including antiprotozoal drugs.
It's important to note that tick-borne diseases can vary in prevalence and geographic distribution. The best way to protect your dog from these diseases is through preventive measures, such as regular tick checks, use of tick preventives, and vaccination if available. If you suspect your dog has been exposed to ticks or is showing any symptoms, it's advisable to consult with a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Good info. My dogs have all been rescues, and most have come with Lyme’s and Erlichia. The treatment took a month (hand-pilling; I don’t have the patience to wrap pills in cheese or whatever). I’ve used Frontline Plus for years, and the vets seemed cool with that. We are inundated with ticks here in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut (Lyme, CT is where the disease got its name). I’ve had ticks on myself as well, but removed them quickly.
