Former conservative here - you’re completely right, I feel like I was groomed and radicalized to be politically illiterate, and unfortunately at the time, I was also willfully ignorant. I truly believed most everything liberals/progressives said must be lies bc so many of my beliefs were tied up in my evangelical upbringing/identity and were parroted by conservative commentators I liked/respected. When I started watching content made my progressives, RIP but I was genuinely surprised they had peer reviewed evidence, including meta analysis of several studies, to back up their claims. Suffice to say I deconstructed my faith along with my conservative ideology. I’m still learning and growing but I’m also a progressive who understands how a person can be so willfully ignorant. It’s honestly sad how many lies I know people are gulping down, to their own detriment.

As an ex-fundamentalist, I recognize this speech pattern from the way some evangelicals pray or preach in order to trigger within themselves an emotional state they call "being filled by the Holy Ghost". They believe that when you do this, you open the true intentions of your heart to the listeners, you don't hold yourself back, and you let god speak through you. I've never heard anybody but fundamentalist christians speak this way: jumping from almost crying to suddenly smiling, performing power but also weakness. It's fundamentally manipulative and psychopathic, in the sincerest way possible.
I recognize this form that group of people as well. The reason she thought this was going to work, is probably because it does. In her church, and with the evangelicals she meet. She is probably not psychopatic, and that is a term describing a hard to diagnose disturbance. But this is clearly abusive.
