My Dad has always been an old dog who can't learn new tricks. He has never been a bigot in the pitchfork and torch sense, but more that there are outdated words he uses from time to time and he has always struggled to wrap his head around people changing their gender. I have heard him defend JK's comments before, claim that you need a vagina to be a woman, and also not put much effort into not deadnaming my non-binary sibling. But I got a text the other day where my dad said that JK was denying the holocaust, and his sentiment was that her words were killing her fanbase and she needs to stop. I never thought JK would get so annoying that it make my dad less transphobic.
The left is changing words so rapidly, you're going to be an outdated word bigot before you know it unless you dedicate your life to keeping up with terminology.

that's the terf appropriation of the term, it used to be in 2/3rd wave feminism as an early political concept of exiting the gender heterodoxy/patriachy/great conformity. the concept goes that you as a women would become a lesbian regardless of any attraction, in order to subvert the gender role that would otherwise be imposed upon you. by being a lesbian society assigns no inherent expectations of an unequal power relation, bringing you outside of the power dynamic heterodoxy. Lesbian as a political category has roots going back at least as far as the 1970s, but in feminist philosophy it was the political category of females who had "opted out" of the categories (or social classes) of man (dominant, oppressor, has power) and woman (submissive, oppressed, without agency). This became the bedrock both for 2nd/3rd wave feminist political ideas, and also for what became the Gender Critical movement, which saw anything that erased or destructured these political categories of man and woman as a threat because they hide what they see as this fundamental category distinction that underpins what feminism must fight against. At least, that's my current understanding of it.

Someone on a forum once told me how someone who was an H. P. fan, before Rowling went off the deep end, saw a drawing of Ponder Stibbons. The first thing they said was that he was an obvious rip-off of Harry Potter. When the person provided receipts that Ponder STibbons predates Harry Potter by many years the person said, "Must be a coincidence then."
Pratchett was also utterly unproblematic and undoubtedly a trans ally. Just look at all the characters like Angua and Cherry who struggle with appearing feminine and feel they have to be like men.
Nowhere is this more apparent than with Monstrous Regiment where the twist is mentioned as "her" and then she decided to live as a man and goes back to being mentioned as "he."
I was never the biggest harry Potter fan, but this is the first I've heard of that author, maybe someone can explain this in more detail? Like what's his relation to harry Potter?
@@daddykarlmarx6183 Non, he was just a very good author, most famous for 40+ discworld novels, which are a comedic spin on fantasy tropes, like f.e. a Wizzard who can't spell, outside of it's comedic aspects some of them can slap you with a moral or philosophical lesson, highly recommend

JKR was always going to end up here. You've only got 3 outcomes from Transphobia, 1) you start to walk back the bigotry, 2) you stake a position somewhere like "Well, trans people are fine altering themselves but shouldn't be allowed in sport" something like that is rarely maintained because it will be questioned constantly, so the person either starts walking back the bigotry, or they go to 3) they become more extreme. JKR has never walked anything back, instead becoming more extreme at every opportunity, well, eventually you end up at the only "Most extreme" position there is.
I think whats really annoying is that no matter what she does, Harry Potter has cemented her legacy.

I mean, I can still enjoy Harry Potter. The aesthetic and personality of the live action wizarding world is mainly what appeals to me, that's what draws me in, and most of that stuff can be accredited to the artists who worked on the movies and cover art for the books. Rowling mostly just did the story and lore. The story of Harry Potter, probably being the worst part of those books.
The latter half of the story is especially bad because of how much handwaving there is. You finally find out how Harry survived Voldemort as a baby, and the answer the book gives is "the power of his mother's love shielded him from the killing curse." Like, wtf is that? Then in the last book, Voldemort kills Harry, who then meets Dumbledore in the afterlife, and he explains to Harry that he's going to be resurrected because Voldemort somehow turned baby Harry into a Horcruxe when he tried to kill him. Shit is so confusing and nonsensical. I feel like that Charlie Day Pepe Silvia meme just from attempting to explain it lol.

Like many TERFs, JKR lashes out at transwomen out of a trauma response related to getting SA'd in their past or just a lifetime of dealing with misogyny in general. Due to their misconceptions about gender and how they perceive trans women as men in drag and trans men as "lost tomboys" as a result, the mere existence of trans people triggers their traumas. And then every time they get pushback for their opinions on the matter, the negative experiences associated with the issue only serve to reinforce their disdain for trans people. And then it's a whole feedback loop from there.
Then eventually, they just go completely off the rails and get into all sorts of confusion when they go down a rabbit hole of misinformation trying to affirm their beliefs. It's a lot like flat earthers who get deeper into their conspiracies when they buy into more increasingly convoluted but ultimately nonsensical justifications for why the earth is flat after people keep disproving them and mocking them for being a flat earther.

The way Malcom Clark misrepresents Magnus Hirschfeld is mind-boggling. Just taking a look at Wikipedia can easily prove that Hirschfeld's views were more nuanced and his advocacy for eugenics was in fact limited to people whose mental faculties were so decrepit that it didn't allow for them to make independent decisions, as well as sexual criminals. He didn't agree with the NS-regime, either.
