  • Five years ago, Paul Simon said he was finished writing songs. But he couldn't stop; new music was coming to him in dreams. The songs became the basis of his latest album, "Seven Psalms." The 81-year-old Simon talks with correspondent Anthony Mason about the addictive nature of songwriting, and whether his hearing loss will mean the end of performing publicly.

Art was a musician in high school and Paul was a nerdy short introvert who kept to himself.
Art asked Paul to sing with him, they performed in highschool and had a hit record "Hey Schoolgirl" in 1957
If it hadnt been for Art Garfunkel there would have been no Paul Simon.
Paul attended Queens College in Brooklyn, New York,
and got a B.A. in English
and entered Brooklyn Law School, dropping out after a year to devote himself to music full time.

Honestly I'm surprised at 81 he's only losing hearing now. Many musicians have lost more because of the loud environment they work in.

He is not "losing his hearing". He has a problem with his left ear, which can be as simple as in inner ear virus, and can happen to anyone.
It has nothing to do with "loud music" - Simon and Garfunkel is not a heavy metal band

Paul may not think it is not pressing on him --- but death is final --- and anyone who is aging is thinking -- on some level --- about death -- whether it is vocalized or not. It is a very private, quiet acknowledgement in the 3am hour. He is entitled to his privacy but the words are clearly about death and mortality. I grew up with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel so it is also about me acknowledging my own mortality as well as anyone else as a teenager during that era.

The great human dilemma is the opposition of the two facts that:
      1. we have an instinctive drive to be well and stay alive
      and
      2. no matter what we do, we will all die, and there is nothing we can do to prevent it
How you resolve that conflict defines your entire life and character.
Its not something you face and deal with when you are old - death is always potentially about 5 minutes away for your entire life.

"The Lord is the face in the atmosphere." Damn, his surreal and constantly blossoming gray matter.
