I cancelled cable, returned all the equipment and remotes about a year ago. I was paying $177/mo. Now I pay $47/mo. for Internet, and $6/mo. for Hulu. Yippee!
do you have unlimited internet? I was going to try that and 1TB limit with direct tv was 50 bucks a month. We would greatly exceed that limit pretty rapidly with how much TV we watch.

Quit cable about two years ago after Spectrum went all digital (to continue getting cable you had to buy a converter for about $7.) and bought two Rokus. I don't watch a lot of sports so between Hulu & Netflix; plus Crackle, Tubi, the Roku Channel and Pluto TV I have all the TV I could ever need.

Cut the Spectrum cord 4 years ago, when after we signed up for HBO over the holidays. Then when we tried to cancel HBO, and go back to our old plan, we were told it was no longer available and we’d end up paying more. Immediately cancelled it, put up an antenna and found out how much content can be found for free, if you know where to look. I have NEVER regretted making the move.

I cut the cord in August 2019. Saving $102 per month. Bought a Roku device and have all the free movie/ program channels (no monthly subscriptions). Also gonna get an outdoor antenna for all local channels. I didn't realize how good some of the local channels are. So all my tv entertainment will be free. Although I will admit I might buy a subscription to Hallmark movie channel around the holidays for the Christmas movies and then cancel subscription after the holidays. I did my homework first to figure out all my options, then made the move to cut the cord. Great savings!!! Good luck to everyone!!!

Never had cable ever since. Always had free tv antenna and got used to it.
I cancelled DirectV a year ago, I had the mother lode package of 150 bucks a month. I Installed a modest Outdoor Antenna next to the old Sat Dish, (Have not removed it yet), and hooked it up to the DirecTV cable that ran to the TV. On a Second TV in the house I used a new cheap indoor antenna. By the Way I found one of the old Rabbit Ear Antennas in the Garage from the old Days, and hooked it up to the 32 inch LCD TV in My bedroom and to my surprise it works better than the new HD Indoor antennas that are sold on the market and I get almost as good reception as the Roof top antenna. So look around you might have one still laying around. I don't pay for any stream services but rely on pirated content for everything else. Amazed how much free content is on the internet with a bit of hunting. I have found everything I use to pay to watch. There are some really cheap DVRs on the market that you use your own usb drive and are advertised as external TV Tuners, they have really poor on air TV guides, clunky remote controls but do a good job on play back of recorded content and have pause live TV function. So I got the cheapest cable internet they offer in the area at 52 bucks/month. The key for me is having a good PC hooked up to my Large Screen TV with a HDMI cable and I can switch from a PC monitor to the TV in Display properties on the PC,. I have Plex Media server on the PC to stream all the Video Content on the Computer to roku devices on the other smaller TV'S over WiFi. Roku has a Plex App. So my yearly savings is about 1800 bucks and surprised how much I don't miss DirecTV or a Cable TV service.
This is a great idea. Thank you so much I’m gonna disconnect the cable box and wait and try it for a month and see how it goes because I can direct stream off my phone. No one seems to mention this.
Just signed up for FiOS Gigabit Internet only plan with free month of UA-cam TV yesterday. About to cancel Optimum next week since me and my mom were billed $160 /mo.

I was paying $100 a month for what was basically local channels. I have been having some reception issues for the last month or so because of FCC mandated station upgrades. They say it will get better in early Sept. I have been thinking about getting Sling for $25 a month. I am getting 40 channels off an antenna

I been with sling for years now, I have OTA antenna for local channels and there free apps if needed, also have the weather Nation free app for 24 hr weather.
I had to use a highly directional 7 foot long yagi with a LTE filter to get a TV transmitter 15 miles away because of a cell phone tower about 20 degrees to the left about a block away. I also had to use a FM trap because Clear Channel with five stations is about 1/4 mile away and another FM station is about 3 blocks away. I still get interference channel 6 on occasion, channel 33 get it about once per hour but it's not bad so I'm not going to worry about channel 33. It's been a lot of work trying to make it work because of all the interference but I'm figuring it out. I'm thinking about amplifying the signal and adding more FM band traps after the amplifier to each of 3 TV's. I'm thinking the FM stations are so strong it leaking a little through the shielded coax. I could use some mentoring on if I should add more FM traps.

The tv companies run the internet here in Cincinnati. There are like only 2 choices. Too many families getting killed by student loans. I don’t have one as of 8/2019 but this is common with everyone I see now
I purchased 3 amazon fires and was planning on cutting the cord this month. I was told the internet only plan capped at 1TB, $50 a month. and the cost for each 50gb over would be 10 dollars. I was checking my internet usage each day to see how much data the amazon fire was using. Turns out it was using roughly 6 gb per hour. My parents are retired and literally watch TV for 17 hours a day. lol. That would be 3.1 TB a month. So to stream that amount of TV one would definitely need a unlimited internet plan and both of those are pricey. Both Comcast and direct tv cost about 80-110 a month for unlimited internet. Which would save roughly $40 a month. The other thing I figured out was the amazon fire still pulls data even when not in use and you turn the TV off. I unplugged them when not in use and our data use was way lower. To stream in 4K uses ALOT of data. To stream in 750p was still using approx 6gs of data. But then the light dawned that I could stream TV in 480p through my computer which uses practically zero data! Yes I would need a computer connected to each television but it could work. So just some thoughts from my perspective of almost cutting the cord and still wanting to.
What would the best antenna be for picking up yellow, green and purple stations?

It's a tough situation where I live in Maine. Only one cable company, I cannot do satellite(trees) and a antenna does not have any reception...
I cannot get any channels with an outdoor antenna.I have direct tv.If I steam with my fire stick I have to use my phones hotspot
One thing I would add though is that unless you can truly say the only reason why you have internet is to watch TV, then you can’t really count that in your TV budget. For the overwhelming majority of people internet has become a utility much like electricity. What I did was subtract the internet and added $10 to get my cost of TV and found I was paying $130 a month just for TV. I also didn’t include Netflix because I had it anyway nor did I include Prime Video because it had more benefits than just video. This was two years ago and I haven’t looked back. Lastly, just for you know what and giggles I looked to see what Xfinity in my area would cost now just for TV (within a double play) and it was almost $160.

Bundling Internet is saving me $30 on paper. (When I call AT&T, they say my bill would actually go up $40 if I went elsewhere for TV, though.) Makes it harder to find significant savings when they do that.

This is helpful but no one mentions what happens when one disconnects all the cable wires on the back of the tv? Will reception be the same as it is with the wires? Should any of the wires be replaced with something?

I live un an apt bldg in New York and they may not allow addl outside antennas on the roof.
I have two televisions. One of them is an LG Web OS TV UH6550 it has a connectivity problem and there is blogs of people with same issue how would you go about fixing this problem. LG has not
The analog to digital conversion has been a two sided knife with both sides being extremely dull.
Sure the days of snowy pics and flutter when an airplane went overhead are gone but unless you have a clear shot at a tower, and these stations keep moving up higher in frequency which, cannot penetrate toilet paper, you get pixilation and massive breakups in sound. At least in the analog days you could follow the dialog.
I'm no more than 10 miles from the 2 remaining towers in my area, and still get pixilation and sound breakups during rain or more so when the leaves are on the trees. Then in Western NY, the CBS affiliate moved from 10 miles away to 35 miles away and can no longer be received without a 150' tower to get over the hills. Also the PBS station and a few others are in that same area and cannot be received. My tax dollars still go in part to PBS but cannot be received without paying at least an additional $60/year over cable.
I know America's most dishonest professionals, lawyers, working for the most greedy of industries, the MSM, are doing everything possible to prevent repeaters even in area's like mine where not everyone can even get cable.
This is not just isolated to my area as my numerous RV trips all exhibit the same crappy digital reception where every 3,4,5th word is missing along with heavy pixilation on the very few channels which can be received.
A good solid digital picture is fantastic but unless you are close to major cities, and a large percentage of America is not, it has been a net loss.
Forget about streaming in an RV as the country which put a man on the moon seems to struggle with placing a cell phone call from point A to B let alone streaming video.
Spectrum just handed us a 29% price increase. Promotional discount programs no longer available for established customers. We've tried streaming TV and movies to our smart TVs. Image is not coming through in high definition on our TVs. What do we need to do to send high definition video to our smart TVs via our internet provider? Thank you!
I went slowly by installing an OTA antenna to check out my reception of local stations before dumping DirecTV. Also had a Roku streaming stick & the available "free" channels. Next I bumped up my internet speed from "up to 20 Mbps" to "up to 60 Mbps". Lastly we added Sling TV blue. Buffering interruptions are annoying as hell & very frequent. Now Sling drops local sports on FOX. I could not be more disappointed with this set-up. I am tempted to just watch OTA TV, go to the local sports bar for baseball games and smash the Roku stick & remote into tiny little pieces & mail them back Roku telling just how "happy" I am with their product.
Can an Apple TV give me broadcast channels? I got Best Buy geek squad in and he sold me an Apple TV as my old smart tv would need to be upgraded. Can an Apple TV serve as a substitute for an antenna for the broadcast channels?
I’m paying 100$ a month for Comcast WIFI. Sprint offered me a hot spot through a lg phone for 30$ A Month with 100 Gigs! So why wouldn’t I switch to the hot spot?
Whats the best way to negotiate internet before cutting the cable tv if it's not when you want to cut cable? We'd like to get a faster upgraded internet speed thru Comcast since thats the only option for internet where I live so do we get it first before we cut the cable? Its a great service you're providing to everyone however it's hard to know how to disconnect to get the best internet deal? Is there a video or is someone able to share their experience in detail when they disconnected but kept Internet and home phone? One thing we're not going to do other than get an antenna is to buy a separate device like Sling, Roku, etc because they get your money when you buy the device then it's wasted when they aren't able to negotiate the content for whatever reason (Ads). I've also decided I'm going to do a walk in to Comcast VS over the phone representative. People are more apt to help when face to face because it just doesn't work over the phone sometimes. Not shy about talking to a Supervisor either. Better than sitting on the phone for hours like I have. And I'm always nice and polite when I do it. You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.
Since the advent of the coronavirus you cannot walk into a Comcast store. They're all closed. And all their "agents" are sitting in bed pretending to work..... Chat or phone. You might as well be talking to the wall.

I had to retain internet only with high speeds and unlimited data for work (thanks, COVID) but I'm still saving a bunch now that I've returned all the boxes we were renting and got rid of all those channels we never watched.
i have tried ALL of the different indoor antennas. the best is still the cheap rabbit ears one found on amazon -20 to 30 bucks. but i take the antenna amp from the flat square antenna and use with the rabbit ears. then i pull only one rabbit ear long and leave the other short- over 135 over the air channels but only about 30 in english.
I cannot use a outdoor antenna, due to living in a low area blocked by high hills.
I only pay for Britbox and Acorn.

Seems these digital signals, especially when the stations move to higher frequencies cannot even penetrate toilet paper.
To me the biggest step is finding cost-effective reliable Internet bandwidth unencumbered by bundled services. Bundles cost you money for services you do not need and tie you to one provider. But out in the sticks a good OTA antenna and a no-Internet OTA tuner/DVR (Mediasonic, others, about $30 plus a USB drive to hold saved programs) might be the best first step.
Those work great.You can buy a passport Drive 1 Terabyte and it doesnt need to be plugged in for power It will have lots of room
I get no DSL in my area...but do have ATT fixed wireless internet, but have a 430GB limit.

So I figure you probably have gotten this question a lot recently. With all these new streaming services being offered soon (Disney+, NBC, etc.) and a lot of content being more spread out between these services now or in the future (i.e. Friends, The Office), does it still save you a reasonable amount of money to cut the cord? Is it still worth it? Because I feel like it's getting to a point where the total cost of a few streaming services will end up costing more per month than cable, and then what's the point cutting the cord. Don't get me wrong, I love cord-cutting, but in terms of savings, I'm worried that I might have to go back to cable in order to not spend more than I thought I would.
Get Hulu and get it all, Live TV plus On Demand and DVR is free
If it’s just one program you want to watch the the best thing to do is buy them outright because in the long term you will save money. However, I think that’s the wrong way to look at it. Even if you get an OTT service like UA-cam TV you can still have four or five more Netflix like services and still save money. You can also cancel anytime you want and restart anytime you want when your favorite show has new episodes. Excluding internet, Netflix and Prime video because I already had that with cable, I was paying around $130 a month for TV, Now I pay $50 for UA-cam TV. In August though I will suspend my UA-cam TV and pickup PlayStation Vue fo $65 because they have more college football and the Redzone. With cable you’re stuck with what you have.
@@kenyattaclay7666 Well with the streaming companies starting to occasionally raise their rates, the average around $50 for UA-cam TV, Direct TV Now, and Fubu, yeah it's getting more expensive. The ability to pick and choose still gives you options cable just doesn't. Right now I don't have anything ordered. Football and Basketball are my two favorite sports, but neither have started yet. I'm saving a ton of money right now. The most I'll spend when it starts back up is around $50 extra. Still about $60 less than I last paid for cable. The WiFi allows me to save money on my cellphone too.
Yes, IMO it's worth cutting the cable cord (i use my high speed Internet only). I have a 4K TV along with my home theater (TV, PC, A/V receiver, 5.1 surround speakers, Modem, and Router).
I have YTTV+Starz/Encore. In addition, i use free Pluto, free Tubi, free IMDb, free Sony Crackle, and free Vudu.
My bill, cable+internet, used to cost me almost $200 per month..........nowadays, my bill is about $125 per month.
But, without cable, i actually get more, a lot more channels, thousands upon thousands.
The major difference is the fees with cable. Taxes for everything, fees for your set top box, DVR, etc. Fees, Fees, and more Fees.
My dog no longer has fleas..........and i no loger have fees.
It's only a matter of time before streaming costs as much as cable. Content costs, no matter what pipe you're sending it through. The whole no ad thing - ask youtube how that's working out...for all the content on here and it still only breaks even.
I cut the cable about 8-9 years ago. Just too expensive and the bill would go up just about every other month for no reason. It can be a hassle if you don't have internet. I don't have a computer so the number of channels are very slim. And only get a couple that aren't religious or are even in English. 😬 I usually have to replace the analog box every to every other year. And they can be challenging on finding the right one. I miss having choices, but not the over priced bill and having 100 channels with nothing good to watch anyways.
And when you're in an apartment, with no windows close to the tv or in the same room. The oppositions are even more slim.
I truly cut the cord last year. I only have OTA TV and internet. I canceled Netflix and Amazon Prime, also. OTA and UA-cam are all I need. My TiVo DVR is filled with OTA shows, and I'll never watch all of them. I receive plenty of channels.
I think I am going to follow you. Streaming on a wi-fi is way too slow. My wife can watch OTA on our flat screen & I will 'play' on the computer up in our office.

In my area, only one provider, Spectrum, and they do not even service the whole town so many are left with sat or failed attempts using cellular services which cannot reach most of our town. Even our fire department has problems contacting their crews. We seem to be in an electromagnetic black hole.
@@deetee270 Same here, Comcast is the big monopoly. I'm paying $245-$270 a month for cable and internet. I haven't turned my TV on in months, I only need internet service. I have down many down grading packages with Comcast. The bill comes and I'm paying the the same or more for the downgrade than the larger bundle. Comcast bills you for every box, service fee for each box, massive taxes, late fees, and THEY BILL YOU FOR SERVICES A MONTH AHEAD! So when I recieve my monthly bill, I owe $600-$700 . By doubling billing you are now instany "late" and charged $8.95

@@respectedagain7296 Just take all your equipment up to their store and turn it in and tell them you are cancelling service. They have to cancel it. You're better off with those prices paying the cancellation fee if there is one and you are in a contract. Don't even call them and haggle with their stupid reps over the phone. I did that 3 years ago and switched to Direct tv. My contract with Direct TV expired and I am slowly looking for ways to cancel my service with them all together. I'm paying 130. a month for 220 channels and that includes unlimited internet. I would say 85% of those channels I don't even watch.
@@kristinasullivan9436 The problem is in my area there isn't any alternative wifi services . Hopefully Verizon or AT&T will be available soon. I wouldnt even waiste my time bringing them back their equipment, WE THE TAXPAYERS PAID FOR IT !!
It drives me insane paying what I pay ,just for internet service, and these companies do this purposely!!
10 years without cable or streaming service. it's great to have 1 less bill to pay. also i noticed women can't live without cable so i cut that cord too. i don't go out to eat ever. also if you drink try to quit big waste of money same with smoking and coffee. think of it like this tomorrow the world is cut off with these items, you will suffer if you don't get your fix.
Not a lot of information there buddy like why don't you mention which service blacks out which local channels for what reason that would be very helpful like sling UA-cam TV they blackout NBA and NFL games if you live within 250 miles of the nearest Stadium that would be very valuable for a sports fans

Spectrum internet here is $70 a month. Ugh. I'm in a valley so antennas don't work. I would caution everyone to research antennas though. There is no such thing as a digital HD antenna. Check out the Antenna Man youtube channel.

I remember when TV was FREE!! All you had to pay for was the television itself. Honestly, I'm sick of being "Programmed" and I think the best thing to do is seriously cut the cord to all of it.
my issue is an older relative that wont give up the home phone. phone cable internet 160.00 internet phone 200.00
Yeah that was my issue too. What I ended up doing, and they fought me initially, was simply get them a cheap cellphone. Once I dropped the ridiculous home line the cable company was forcing on me, I was able to choose better options and eventually drop cable all together. Don't miss it at all, and they eventually learned to like using a cellphone.
My parents are the same. They have one of those triple play things and they pay over $200. My dad still wants sports and my mom just watches repeats or the stock channels during the tv season. When they come over, I tell them to get rid of cable. We use an antenna I bought online and stream Netflix and Hulu. They are very non-tech. I keep telling them get a Roku and stream from the computer but they refuse to understand.

Here's my problem: I just found out last week which was the washing machine and which was the microwave! Not really, but really. I've no mechanical or technological aptitude whatsoever so hearing any of this causes my brain to implode. I figured out, took one second to do this, that my wife and I could go on a yearly vacation were it not for cable. Soooo... where's a guy like me logically and reasonably start? I think I will ask my stepson how he " watches TV".... He thinks the WALKING DEAD is a documentary but is more tech savvy than me

I called dish....said im done enough is enough, took their dish down, bought a antenna, installed that antenna on their pole mount on my roof, got 35 FREE local channels ( holla! ), got netflix, hulu, amazon prime....small changes to deal with at first but nbd. Boom mic drop
If you have Internet you don't need any TV you can all the news and movies on the internet that will save you at least 600 to 800 dollars a month...
I had internet with many reruns so I ws fed up so I cancelled and using Internet for everything I need or want....... cool.............

If you're cutting the cord then DO IT! Get the fastest Internet you can afford. I am paying $69.29 for 100MB Internet. I subscribe to SLING TV at base price of $25 and a couple $5 add ons to get all the channels I used to watch. But for the last 6 months I haven't watched any TV at all and don't miss it. I stopped NetFlix and still ave Amazon Prime which has free movies. I watch a movie a couple times a month at most and that's about it. Stream news if something is happening that I want to watch. I don't miss TV at all. I'm on the Internet, reading, working on projects. Amazing and sad how much time I wasted staring at the TV screen. I am happier without the damn "opiate of the masses".
When people start saying I can't cut the cord, I say you aren't frugal enough. Besides the fact there are so many devices out there, people watch too much tv anyhow. Read a book, get outside, breath the air, walk your dog and talk to your kids.
So you are saying give up while living in a country which put a man on the moon but cannot get a TV, Internet, Cell, Radio signal to many areas. This is the information age and information is power and without it, puts people at a distinct disadvantage.

If you have internet you are not cutting cable if you pay for netflix you are not cutting the cord. Unless you go off the grid you are not cutting the cord , i lose brain cells in these videos .

Swav K I don’t cut cords ya downy , and you can also use your cell phone but with your lack of brain cell I bet you didn’t think of all the ways you could access the internet , because you can tether with a cellphone to a computer which would be more realistic and money saving if you were really dedicated to cord cutting .
