This Altinoglu/Frankfurt RSO performance is beautifully structured and played with real polish. Indeed, it is demonstrably superior to the only commercial recording that's available of the 1907 original version of Florent Schmitt's masterpiece. The success of this Altinoglu/Frankfurt rendition should come as no surprise, because Maestro Altinoglu has been a champion of Schmitt’s "Salomé" ballet for more than a decade. He has presented the revised (1910) version in concert with various orchestras in Europe and the United States (including at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2012), and he's also included the score in his classes for conducting students at the Paris Conservatoire. With such passionate advocacy for the music, it seems only natural that he would want to program the 1907 original version of the piece as well - and he's done so exceedingly well here. Congratulations to him, the musicians, and everyone else associated with this production.

Because of the space involved the orchestra was stripped down to essentials. The suite (written a little later) uses a full orchestra - and it is just as electrifying as this version. This, however, is an outstanding performance indeed! Worth your time to listen and watch!

Der intelligente und ebenso geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im fließenden doch gut phrasierten Tempo und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Wahrlich ergreifend!

Deneve does the 1910 version of this piece (half the music, twice the musicians). Both versions are spectacular. I saw Deneve present it in Toronto in 2011, as well as Lionel Bringuier in Cleveland, JoAnn Falletta in Buffalo, Yannick Nezet-Seguin in Philadelphia and Fabien Gabel in Detroit. Without a doubt, La Tragedie de Salome is definitely "worth the trip" to see ...

This is quite a large, heavy dose of impressionism; I was impressed almost to the point of being flattened under the pressure. Patience and concentration helped, but it couldn't forestall the boredom that I inevitably had to succumb to. I'm not even sure that seeing a staged ballet to this music would hold my interest. Bravo to the FRSO for having the stamina to present it, and outlast it!
Well, this is what you signed up for with Schmitt. If you can't stand impressionism... you don't have to listen to it. I'd argue this music, especially the prelude, is very digestible yet lush. Impressionism is about approximating an image, evoking it through emotion and color, not about directly conveying the image. If you need romanticism, a ballet, or opera... stick to that.
Music is always a matter of personal experience and taste. There's hardy a composer or style, or period that doesn't have both passionate advocates, and detractors. In the final analysis, it's futile to argue over it. You either like it or you don't, and no big deal either way.

I believe that the manuscript score is held at the Bibliotheque National in Paris, from which the performing edition was prepared.
