Eh. Agreed with you on this, but after highway 17 Gordon is almost never alone. He has his army of antlions in Nova prospect, then rebels in City 17 battles. And then 90% of episodes he's with alyx. And in episodes he has vorts looking over him and protecting from G-man's influence.
this is why I don't agree with all the people saying that we should have gotten the beta aesthetics. The release aesthetics of HL2 were similar enough to the real world but strange and mutilated to a point where it was an actually convincing image of Earth after a successful mass genocide. The environment design was essentially the normal world but drained of life and scattered with images of foreign technology and environmental indications of disaster. It was characterized by its uncanny valley effect which I know the beta would not have pulled off, being so dark and 80's sci fi.
@@aerozz8851 yes .i mean hl2 atmosphere is inspired a lot from post sovietic era. east european countries .like Russia.a broken country that once was a great industrial power
This part of the game traversing under the bridge along the Coast, hearing the train running along the tracks and then it hits you the loneliness and emptiness that extends across the moment, that you are essentially traversing ruins of mankind, not yet receding into obscurity, but the beginning. The entire Coast trek part of HL2 really has some of the best atmosphere in the game to me, great vistas and locations and unlike Ravenholm where its ravaged by Infestation, the Coast is abandoned, its a wild zone in which the Earth is seizing slowly the infrastructure we built upon it, and the effects of the Combine's harvesting of humanity's resources as well as a place of rebirth for the Xen creatures. Its cyclical, we fade away and nature takes its course. In the end when humanity does puff out, we won't be remembered, just join in the cycle of life. I dunno why that occured to me during that trek across the bridge, but it did.
"Are all the accomplishments of humanity fated to be nothing more than a layer of broken plastic shards thinly strewn across a fossil bed, sandwiched between the Burgess shale and an eon's worth of mud?"
I love this level. When u walk underneath the bridge and hear train passing by above. Houses in the fog. Lost and forgotten world, same as u lost and forgotten in that world. Reminds me of SH2 somehow.
I've never actually listened to Lab Practicum outside of when it was used in HL2 or a custom map, and I to say that while I'm enjoying it I keep finding myself straining to hear the train horn.

To me this theme is the reminder that Gordon has been on the mission to save the world with whatever resources he could find without a break, Gordon had just defeated the Nihilanth and now he wakes up to the earth subjugated and in need of saving again.
This, this right here, is peak video game atmosphere, when I was under that bridge and heard this music, I just said "Half Life 2 is special" out loud.just the emptiness of the coast with the fog making it seem like you're in a void, with a somber atmosphere that makes you reflect about what you're really doing here. It's Perfect.
by far my most favourite ambient music in the half life series, it fits pertfectly into the ocean/coast theme and makes you think back on your journey so far, how isolated you are, and what happened to this world.
The incredible feeling of lonely contemplation I get from this soundtrack and level… I remember stopping in my tracks when I was under the bridge just to soak it all in. And then the train occasionally whizzing by overhead…perfect
What i love about this section is that it is one of the only few places where Gordon could, realistically, take a small break. In Half Life 1 he was relentlessly hunted down by the H.E.C.U and the Xenians, and in Half Life 2 he is either escaping from the Combine or assaulting a place. Highway 17 is the ONLY chapter where you can stop and rest a little in a calm enviroment, and that place is none other than the fading light of humankind.
Every time (if not every sunny day) THIS sounds in my subconscious and affects my perception of time after 13:00 pm and before 17:00. During this entire period, if I am not busy with something very important and meaningful, I am in an extremely strange (even a little sleepy) state, which, it seems to me, can also be influenced by a certain effect of midday horror - when everything around is so quiet and the sun is shining very brightly on the street (summer or autumn, sometimes clear winter weather away from the city environment at about 15:00 in the afternoon), a certain dissonance arises between the picture and time perception (I would also say that THIS music describes the state of the human brain in midday horror, especially with the initial part of the track). Moreover, this never happens in cloudy or foggy-rainy weather, only when there is sun and no clouds outside. This ideal state for me is conveyed by the gm_boreas map in Garry's Mod(this is why its my favorite map in all game). I don’t understand why the solar presence affects me so mentally, or I’m just weirdo - it will be interesting to read if anyone else has similar feelings. 🎧
