The only impressive thing about this episode is how Chris Chibnall can actually keep a secret and hide a spoiler. Captain Jack’s reveal made me and my father scream out loud, even though we live in japan and it was very very early morning

I don’t mind Ruth being the Doctor, I just hope to god it’s after Matt Smith’s era - would be interesting to see the second regeneration cycle have its toll on the Doctor’s memory, but if it’s pre-smith then it’s just messing with the chronology of the show unnecessarily
its kinda dumb tho because the only point in which it can make sense is if it happens between Jodie and Capaldi (which would still be stupid). If it's Pre-Classic era its stupid and awful, if its during/after the time war its stupid, pointless and makes no sense considering eccleston's Doctor and if its post Smith than it makes no sense because of Clara. If its a parallel Doctor than it makes no sense because the walls between parallel dimensions have been sealed since the time war and the time-lords have no good reason to get an alternate Doctor who is far less effective. And if its a future incarnation it'll just make things needlessly complicated when said incarnation comes around and make her introductory season the worst jumping on point in new-who.
Overall its just a pointless idea and character made for agenda pushing and to boost figures who will either be disappointing and amount to nothing or contradict pretty much all established cannon (including shit established even in the past decade of the revival) and irreversibly fracture the shows legacy and fan-base.
I wouldn’t mind if she was season 6 b though. She’d fit perfectly into that theory - not before the first, but buried in the doctor’s history, and in between an ambiguous regeneration

Kanashimi435 it’s a theory that suggests between the second doctor being taken away and forced to regenerate and the third stumbling out of the TARDIS, the doctor worked for the time lords. It would explain a lot about what we know about Ruth so far, and maybe something happened to two, who needed to regenerate, so they gave the doctor another regeneration because they were working together, explaining the regeneration energy thing. It relies on classic who knowledge, but it’s a cool theory
Savannah Krystall that actually sounds plausible and I’d be pretty okay with that outcome tbh - suppose they can always justify 10’s regeneration as “artron energy” or whatever healing him instead of it being a full regeneration. Plus Pertwee was noticeably more affected by regeneration than any other Doctor, and the time lords are known to wipe memories as they did with Jamie and Zoe in The War Games. Yeah, I’m suddenly swayed in favour of this theory - unless Chibbs can pull an equally satisfying solution out of his hat
The thing that really gets me about the response to this episode is I've seen a lot of comments along the line of "This is the best episode since Capaldi's swansong.", and while I agree with this statement it's kind of worrying that the best the Chibnall era has to offer is a fanbaity episode more interested in setting up the next season rather than telling it's own narrative - it's like the Iron Man 2 of Doctor Who episodes.
I mean by this point in the RTD era we had Dalek, Father's Day, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Parting of the Ways, School Reunion, and Girl in the Fireplace.
In the Moffat era we'd have had Eleventh Hour, Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone, Amy's Choice, Vincent and the Doctor, Pandorica Opens, A Christmas Carol, The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, The Doctor's Wife.
The only ones I really liked out of the Moffat era you listed were Eleventh Hour, Vincent and the Doctor and A Christmas Carol the rest I thought were pretty mediocre.
Well I only liked about half of those Moffat era episodes but still agree overall.

I beleive the doctor is dead he died after the 12th doctor as was set up before its been established the doctor dies after the 12th regenerate I don't count it as cannon

MightyElemental War doctor counting as a legit regeneration is debatable.
Coming out of this episode, I felt that they finally made a decent one, until I thought back on it.
The Judoon played barely any part and were shown to be fairly incompetent, weirdly. The rest of the episode had a weirdly paced plot line that was just copying "Smith and Jones" but with a bunch of surprise twists thrown in to fake good writing. Then, the main twist - Ruth being a time lord - felt like a rip off of "Utopia"s reveal of the Master, but somehow written to be boring.
The best part of the episode was, of course, Jack, but I feel that was more down to John Barrowman than the writers.
Yeah Jacks dialogue is really clunky compared to what he's been given elsewhere, even early Torchwood season 1 Jack had better stuff to work with, between this and the sudden and recent creation of a Torchwood UA-cam channel, and the audio stuff over the past 5 years keeping it a bit more relevant Im really starting to hope they bring it back for a good 5th Season more in vain of seasons 1 and 2 (although it would have to either adapt or negate like all the audio stuff and somehow fix the stuff miracle day fucked up, AND give a good reason for both miracle day and children of earth just kind of not having any effect on anything).

@@kanashimi4356 when it comes to Torchwood i really need it to come back and fix the stuff miracle day fucked up. I can handle all the other and act like nothing is wrong except miracle day . We didn't even get a proper explanation of what exactly was going on plus they left us knowing that all this was phase 1 and the families kept working on their plan and then nothing that could explain all this.

Whilst it’s great that Captain Jack’s back, I think it’s a great shame that the one time he finally returns happens to be under the worst show-runner, worst Doctor and worst companions we’ve ever had…
Having those three wooden planks in the room with him really highlighted their complete lack of personality

Damn I was not expecting that rating but hey it's you're video and who am I to judge? I'll be honest I found the whole Ruth being a pre Hartnell doctor thing more concerning than anything and the episode felt a bit too much like a fan fic in places but again I can understand why you liked it.
Tharries shes not pre hartnell. It's pretty clear she isn't because of the Tardis being a police box and the fact we see hartnell steal the Tardis in name of the Doctor. She's probs the doctor of Pete's world

If it's not pre Hartnell it's not making any sense and it's breaking cannon which is typical chibbs and doesn't care about years of doctor who lore, he just did this to go totally off the rails trolling us
Tbf the episode had a good amount of fanservice as well as using twists and elements the show had before. I can understand why people like it even if I myself fear how the retcon will be handled.

-The best Whitaker story we've had so far
-The best use of the Judoon since Tennant
-The most inspired idea Chibnall has had

-Lore-friendly
-Original, it stole most of it's points from Martha's era
-A good one for Yaz, she did not conduct herself like a Police Officer. I think that while confronting the Judoon, Ryan undercut her bigtime.
-Worth an 8.5. In my opinion, it was closer to a 6/10, based on the points I have outlined

This episode was:
-The 4th best Whitaker story we've had so far, behind It Takes You Away, Spyfall and Kerblam!
-The best use of the Judoon ever, not that they weren't good in Smith and Jones but this episode made them much more interesting imo
-The most contrived idea Chibnall has had, calling it inspired would be a stretch.
This episode was not:
-Lore-friendly FOR THE TIME BEING, because it's not impossible those issues might be resolved by the finale.
-Original (agreed)
-Too bad for Yaz when compared to her previous appearances , as her being a cop was at least acknowledged
-Worth an 8.5. In my opinion, it was closer to a 7/10.
@@robo3007 I'm glad we could agree on some things. When I said lore-frenziedly, I meant I can't imagine a satisfying way to make it lore friendly.
She can't be an early incarnation of the doctor, because Whitaker has no memory of her, and that would ruin the 12 regeneration rule
She can't be a successor to Whittier, because she had never hear of a sonic screwdriver, her Tardis looks ancient, and she was okay with holding a gun (something the post-time-war doctor would never do)
So the obvious solution is a parallel universe doctor, but that has been confirmed by Chibnall to not be the case, so whatever happens, its going to break some rules.
The next episode is going to air in just a few hours, and I am filled with dread and fear at what Chibs is going to do.
I mean if you call a massive retcon to all established canon as a minor nitpick idk what you're smoking lol
We still have no idea where this Doctor came from. Could be a different universe, or it could all just be a hoax. So that criticism isn't really valid until they reveal who this Doctor is specifically.

I hadn’t even considered that Jack’s appearance in this could be a set up for a Torchwood reboot. That would actually make a lot of sense when you remember that Sarah Jane’s return in School Reunion was based more on nostalgia than her role in the plot but successfully set up the Sarah Jane Adventures.
If they did go ahead with that, they could show Jack and Gwen running into whatever the lone cyberman turns out to be and have the whole series leading up to his appearance on Doctor Who.
The best thing since Blink? There's like 15 episodes better that Fugitive of the Judoon.

Genuinely think the only good Cybermen story we've gotten in New Who is 'World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls', but even then towards the end of 'The Doctor Falls' they just became villains to get blown up rather than a genuine threat.
I think he did until they got overshadowed by the master again in the second part

harry gave heaven sent such a low rating that I genuinely believe when he liked a episode a lot.
I feel like this episode should be rewatched after the series is over. A lot of praise comes from surprise and hype - I see a lot of praise for the episode is about Jack and the new Doctor, but that's all just setup for later episodes that might not pay off.
That's my main problem with this episode, it reminds of Iron Man 2 in that it's perfectly serviceable as it's own thing, but a lot of the acclaim it receives is a result of fans being excited by what it's setting up for later.
My mom just LOVED Captain Jack. She used to watch Torchwood, before I even introduced her to Doctor Who! When we first watched series 1, she wasn´t quite shook, when the Daleks first shot Jack and said "That guy´s immortal!"
In time she was pretty much caught up with everything including series 11 in German (which I even still have to watch!). The last episode we re-watched together was the Army of Ghosts/ Doomsday two parter before she - very suddenly - just died on Dec. 19th!
So,... yeah....

The thing I liked about this episode was just how unpredictable it was. It felt like someone who actually had ideas wrote this episode and it made it interesting and fun. I don't think I liked it as much as you did, but this definitely got me hyped for the future.
Also, while this is by far not the best series it is handling the whole story arc thing better than most past series.
Yeah, at this point I'm happy when an episode comes in hot with interesting ideas and isn't boring.
I love the Judoon episode it was unpredictable and it was great. I love seeing Captain Jack Harkness and soon as I heard his voice I literally felt goosebumps. I love the fact that there we did not know where Ruth was the doctor from the past or the future because neither of them remembered each other. Ruth also had a presence as the doctor and she used these crazy martial arts that previous incarnation of Doctors has. Check out the 90s film and you will see the doctor going fist to fist in a fistfight. Overall, I enjoyed this episode I give an 8.5. It would have been more if Captain had met Jack
then they ruin it later on with a hammer and ton of exposition to nail the show with that doesn't add up at all. as long as Ruth's Doctor is kept, the rest of it can stay or go.

Glad that you liked this one. Another thing I noticed was that the top of the lighthouse looks similar to the light on top of the Tardis.
Theory. This doctor and missy are both from a parallel universe. When we first see missy the apparently evil plot turns out to be a gift to the doctor. Any fan of doctor who knows that there’s no way the doctor would want an army of cybermen. But this new doctor in fugitive might. She seems like a darker version of the doctor and may be from a universe where her and the master are friends and the doctor would gladly take this gift. Later in the series when missy tries to trick the doctor into killing Clara this could be the kind of think missy and the other doctor would laugh about and think of as a funny prank. If anyone is unsure of anything about this theory then feel free to reply and I’ll gladly try to fill any gaps in the theory :)
I think my favourite thing about this episode is the beautiful metaphor about Ruth’s birthday. Not only is it her human birthday but she’s also being re born as the doctor and her whole life is changing! and the cyclical structure of the episode is beautiful!

Plus, neither Doctor recognizes the other. That alone tells me that there’s more going on here than a simple retcon.
I feel like I can't make a judgement on this until I know where the plotlines go. I also will need to wait until the fact I got partially spoiled by a news article talking about the 'first black doctor' doesn't enrage me as much. The whole episode all I could think was "She's the black character therefore she's secretly the Doctor" Thanks random article made me see that character prodominately by her race, and also didn't let me get into the story.
Also all I could think of when Jack was on screen was the lense flares. why????

Broad church is good which is why I can respect Chibnall. But I do agree with the consensus that he’s not a good writer/show runner for Doctor Who.
The concept of the judoon hunting down a prisoner, only for it to be revealed to be a timelord who used the chameleon arch in a twist is an absolutely amazing concept in itself. Whether or not it was executed the best is another conversation, but the way the show rewards you as a fan with knowledge of the shows past lore/stories is the kick it needed to breathe new life into it. Lets just hope it tries its best to stick the landing with whatever conclusion it ends up with

He put himself in a corner with that ultimatum, so he had to 'like' this episode in order to keep reviewing DW and save face, I don't blame him since I love his reviews and their popular, but I think that's why this review was so positive.
I dont get why people loved this episode so much. Yes it was a good episode but so much fanwanking. Jack was wasted and just placed in to get all the RTD and Torchwood fans screaming. I am seriously worried about the ending for this series, so much is being built up and I am worried that it will all just fall flat. Call me a Whittakee hater all you want but I’m just not feeling all they hype for series 12

As much as I hated Jodie's first season, I do like how season 2 has actually made some of the bad-direction into a plot point/character arch. Her first season felt so disconnected - she never spoke about herself or her past, they never encountered anything she was familiar with, etc. While I don't think this makes up for individually bad episodes, I do like that it's being addressed in her second season as an actual failing on the Doctor's part. Her friends are calling her out on how they don't know anything about her.
As an aside, I hadn't notice that they hadn't visited future Earth before, and that is one thing I liked about the Orphan episode - how the companions reacted to seeing their future. I liked experiencing that emotion with them apart from rest of the episode. I actually think the emotion in this one small scene was better because of how much longer it took to happen - trumping Rose's second episode for capturing that hitting-home emotion.
Me watching this ep: "What? What? What!?" (Read like David Tennant) oh by the way, small object holding Time-Lord Fire, Judoon, Master, Captain Jack, someone's a fan of season 3.

I think you wanted to like this episode too much and talked yourself into liking it more. I thought everything you were saying was going to lead up into a twist ending saying you were joking because all the positives you mentioned seemed like stretches. This episode seemed more like one to get fanbois into the show again and didn't offer anything actually good.

main issue with this black doctor is she can't be a previous regeneration unless the current canon is changed since we know all 13 faces of cycle 1 and we know both faces of cycle 2 so this new doctor can only be a future regeneration

i do hate it when they introduce another regeneration of the Dr that wasn't in any of the past episodes, and the excuse why we've never heard of them before is 'oh i wiped your emory of me' or 'oh i try to forget that incarnation' can we please not mess with the canon? it's just irritating

It's a shame that they went ahead and used this episode to ruin the entirety of the canon of the show.
The Timeless Child is the Doctor themselves, and is their "first life" per se. As a child, they were unkillable and could regenerate endlessly. Found on an unknown planet, they were taken back to Gallifrey, where their abilities allowed Gallifreyans to become Time Lords. The character "Ruth" is (apparently) an earlier life of the Doctor. This is all confirmed by the leaks.
That's s neat idea that doesn't fuck up the lore, not a fan of the revelation that the doctor is this thing of the season again
Pretty lame. The Time Lords didn't naturally evolve that way to become unique. They just got hold of some literal magic child's powers. As if that wasn't bad enough, this would make the Doctor even more super duper important in the universe since his birth. Up until now he was just this genius who started out as an underdog and eventually became infamous in the universe after his many adventures. I hope this is false.

Jodie was on point this episode, she really felt like the doctor, unlike in previous episodes. Probably down to the writing, but a massive improvement on other 13th doctor episodes. There’s also some conflict with the companions, woohoo, characters with more than 1 dimension!
6:55 the prop sonic has a button on it lol. It's obviously to trigger the light possibly the motor, but they could have hidden it better or made it remote controlled

-It's almost as if the previous lukewarm episodes were written deliberately that way so the impact of this episode would be all the greater. Let's not forget that the Master told the Doctor that everything she thought she knew was a lie and that the Doctor has already been inside some sort of parallel universe in the Spyfall episodes. So I think a story arc or two are being set up. I really hope the writing quality, and the pacing, continues. For me this was a 9.5/10. Thank you for the great review.

@@aaronstickle War Doctor plus how it was built up was literally Human Nature/Family of Blood. Lee was basically Martha, the Judoon and Gat being the Family and Ruth being the Doctor. It's really not hard to see the similarities.
But in all fairness, I'm more worried about the retcon we are gonna witness soon.

Yep, Lee was a good character and was even living as Doctor Ruth's husband. Too bad she apparently didn't give a damn about him and was totally unaffected by his death, immediately forgotten after his appearance. Just like Captain Jack's appearance. And the Judoon's. Remember the Judoon, the original focus of the story? Yeah, me neither.

I was just thinking, if Ruth is a canon Doctor from the 13th Doctor's past, how could David Tennant regenerate? Surely if Ruth came before that would mean that the Doctors regeneration cycle would have ended with Tennant, and not Smith who was given the new regeneration cycle by the time lords...

I still haven't finished your review, but for me this episode was just a jumbled mess. Lots of great things, lots of bad things, and all stitched together in the worst way possible. I feel like it is both better than and worse than Orphan 55, because at least Orphan 55 was consistent, but on the other hand this episode gave me strong emotions, positive and negative, which felt like we were back in the Moffat era.
At least Moffat era doesn't make a blob creature from Love & Monsters.
Best episode since late Matt Smith to early Peter Capadli Era. Jadun, Jack and shots of a ship that saves the budget, truly we live in an age of wonder.
I disagree as series 10 was pretty fun.

Me and my mom we’re watching this together, and I just remember the shared moment of “WTF” we had when the doctor dug up Ruth’s tardis and the realization dawned on us. After the last two episodes, our expectations were fairly low for this episode, so it totally blew us away when it presented us with real stakes and real intrigue.
