The side-by-side view at 21:54 together with the text on the key differences might be the best thing ive ever come across in a coaching video.
I dont know how much effort the editing takes for this style, but i would absolutely love it if this comes more often in coaching-style videos. Its truly fantastic to see.
Great video!
Came to say the same! beautifully made! couldn't be more clear.
What a great guest! He openly talks about his thoughts during the process, making for really good interaction between you two. Rotimi‘s complex thinking offers real insight into what moves us climbers during projects. Would love to see him more often.
Yes! More session coaching Rotimi please. He says so many things I recognize!
New epic climber unlocked, "Man-catcher Louis"
Hey Louis, Im climbing for a few months now and your videos are by far the best imo on UA-cam for understanding and helping new climbers to learn technique, approach to new projects and motivation. Keep up the great work on your channel!
Welcome to the community and family
It's not directly for beginners, but of course there are also for beginners some learnings. E.g. work on your weakness. 👍
.
What is super inspirational to me is how Rotimi is smiling after the session. One way of seeing this sessions would be 'oh, I couldn't send anything today' which is how I usually feel. But you can tell he feels clear and tangible progress in the session and feels better about himself and his climbing after the session. It takes a true coach to make the student feel that way. Some teachers can .are you feel pretty sh*tty even if you've sent everything that day.
This was such a great video for the mental attitude of climbing
... now I'm soooo psyched to learn paddle dynos. Such a good explanation.
22:42 this would make a good short. I feel like i would save it just to replay it and remind myself later. Great video, lots of learning on very different styles of climbs!
Louis is really one of the kindest people in the game. Reminds me of my favourite climbing teacher and friend Betão the friendliest and most giving climber I've ever known
This might me my favourite Louis coaches video!
ps: please never ever edit out the failing catches at the start, they are amazing
I love Louis’ mindset tips, these sessions always look fun (even when they are challenging and need to see progress along the way)
Rotimi often climbs at East when i'm there (on a Monday). Dude is strong and chill.
22:40 I think as climbers, we can all relate that there are styles that we are not good at and we typically always default to a negative mindset. As Louis always teaches, what we say to ourselves can be rephrased into a much more positive mindset. Terrific video and lessons.
Love these training videos, they are so relatable and practical!
Finally an in depth video for higher intermediate levels! Thank you so much!
This video came at the perfect time for me. I'm neurodivergent, I'm a novice climber, and I'm currently learning to drive... And struggling with it.
I reluctantly accepted today that I'm going to have to swap from a manual to an automatic because I have coordination difficulties.
After an emotional driving lesson, I decided to let off steam with a quick bouldering session. Although I still managed to climb a few techy problems and made progress on a more power-based one, my movements weren't very fluid, so if course my brain was going "that's because you're clumsy and stupid and your coordination is always going to be rubbish".
What a shitty, mean thing to say to myself.
So instead, looking at the evidence...
I've been climbing for 14 months. I'm neurodivergent, I have a connective tissue disorder and several other chronic conditions, I'm in my 40s, postmenopausal and a working parent, and I'm currently stronger, more flexible, braver and more movement-literate than at any other time in my life. I'm tenacious, and I've worked really hard to make progress in something I love, but which didn't come naturally, and I'm improving all the time, and even do moves sometimes that impress other climbers. I'm pretty nifty at slabs and anything in a corner, and I have damn good balance, which is something I couldn't say a year ago!
Thanks for the mindset tips. I'm glad I've just talked myself round to a different point of view. 😅
Also, Rotimi is an excellent student and so positive! Would love to see more collabs between you guys. ❤
The paddle dyno trick is so eye-opening for me. Thank you Lou for sharing it!
Another great video. Istruggle with having a negative mindset . Your tips about the way you talk to yourself sound really helpful. Looking forward to going tomorrow.
You are a gem of a human Louis!
This video is a masterclass of mindset coaching!
i really like the way louis mindset is he really focuses on not putting yourself down and keeping that good mindset cause it really does effect your climbing. Great video i would love to see him do some lead climbing or top roping routes i think that would be super interesting
Very impressive your progress, Rotimi, especially on squeezing into the little boxes on the second boulder as a rather tall climber. Amazing coaching as always from you, Louis. Seeing the latest videos with you, collaborating with Erin, Eric Karlson and Rotimi, your way of finding the right words for so manY different people in different situations really impresses me (as a physio who has a reputation of encouraging people being a personal strength). So great to watch and learn from!
Catalyst Tuesday, yay!
Trying weakness problems or "anti-style" is great and all. Except on sideways dynos, those can eat it.
Great teaching again Ty so much 👍
funny seeing myself in the background of this video haha :)
That intro was legendary!
Such a great coach!!
Sugar Honey Ice Tea is my new favorite xD
Aw i feel like I've just had a therapy session !! 🫶 great video ❤
Awesome video!!
I think that the things you tell yourself vs the things you feel at that time and the way these two things impact each other is comparable to your emotional state and the music you listen to. Yes, you can make yourself happier by listening to happy music, but that only works when you're already kind of happy or at least neutral. When you listen to happy music when you're depressed it's only going to make you feel more miserable and it will only frustrate you a lot. So if I feel kinda neutral about a boulder and I hype myself up, that generally works well. But when I'm really insecure for some reason it won't work any more. Instead, what I notice works best, I try to simply get rid of all feelings altogether. This allows me to just send it without trying my best, but also without being dragged down by my insecurity. Hopefully, after trying a few times, I lose my insecurity and I can see myself doing it if I try a bit harder, which then allows me to hype myself up and enter a different, more positive mental state.
In other words: the things you tell yourself and the things you feel should not be too distant from each other, or it won't work. And if I feel really insecure, it's best to enter a mental state of 'not caring' too much and just try and see what happens. I hope this makes sense.
more videos in this grade range would help me and others improve a lot
such a great tips here
Damn I'd love to have a bouldering session with you fellas. Good vibes.
Dream combo (including Sam ; ))
Woaaahh very early! Exciting!
Regarding the question on how to measure progress if you don't finish boulders, I usually just decide that wherever I fall of is the top of that route for that day for me. Someone else decided, somewhat arbitrarily, where the route ends, so why shouldn't I get to decide where it ends for this day. And if on another day I manage to go past my previous "top", I can mark down progress in my little notebook of what I topped that day.
maybe don't go climbing with eddie hall, I am not sure you'd survive the intro.
I'm going to go ahead and steal "optimistic nihilism" as an explanation of climbing mindset.
Ink’s weaknesses are treats and naps, and he leans into them hard
He's just like me fr
Hey Louis, will you ever make a Video on Finger Taping? And do you have a preference for a no hang device?
Louis is no Climbing Coach ! He's a philosopher and mental health coach that just happens to be great at climbing !
Regarding what you say to yourself, you also know what you mean, so how you express it doesn't really matter.
I've always wondered what grade I personally climb at. Should I base it off of my flash grade? Or my project grade? I do like the use of grading systems that lump up the v grades, but it makes it a little harder to determine where you are.
i really need a private loui for my sessions
my gf gifted me one of the ink shirts - propelled me to new hights ^^
9:35 beanie bro spotted
Kinda stuck on 7a lead grading, should really train fingers, endurance and mobility.. used to climb 7c with more training in those areas.. but fk them i wanna climb hard..
"V6 to V8"
Okay I'll see myself out
*stays anyways*
Love this guy though
tired: i'm a v4 climber, none of this applies to me :(
wired: i'm a v4 climber, tomorrow I shall be a v8 climber thanks to louis >:)
That first climb is not a 5 in a million years haha
RAHHHHHH MANDALA SUPREMACY 🦅🦅🦅🦅
Needed this. About to take a 2-week break due to pip synovitis. Upped my training to get through a V7 plateau and overtrained. Gonna come back slow.
