    I'm coming up on my one year anniversary of discovering music, and holy shit it was the best thing that's ever happened to me. I never had a favorite song, band, or genre before, and now I do and it's great! I'm currently building up my collection, and trying to stay away from buying from Amazon so that I can support my local record stores. I used to hate music. Now I love it.

      I couldn't have part of collection put away somewhere in boxes, just wouldn't work for me, everything must be out! I'm getting close to ten thousand CDs and I will say I'm going to have to show some real creativity with keeping my CDs out of closets and boxes! I love your CD shelves. I'm just getting back into CD collecting and got my boxes of Cds from high school/college out of the basement (mostly from the early 90s to the early 2000s) and am struggling to find a nice way to display them without taking up too much room (I have about 1200 CDs right now). I might need to find some shelves like yours so I can have room for what I have and still have some room to grow. (I also need to get some of my concert posters from shows I saw back in the 90s framed to add a nice look to the room). Really enjoying your videos man, I'm more of an alternative music fan, but love the hard rock and metal too. Saw Faster Pussycat and LA Guns play recently, great show!

    I have many CDs in different places mostly in drawers and boxes, and a few in racks, too, however, and have my Vinyl on shelves just big enough to fit them on there.
    In my view, I like to organise my albums by album name, and it's easier for me to see where my albums are and it's just how I look at my albums. At the moment, it's not organised like that, because I don't have my own house at the moment, but when I get my own house, it will be amazing to have them by album name, no matter who the artist is, or the genre is, but it's easy for me to find my albums by the album name and not in artist order with album name alphabetised, like it is on streaming services.
    For me, I think you can't have a collection of music without Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell or Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet or Iron Maiden's The Number Of The Beast, in my view. Music has been my passion, but I only buy what I like and what I want, and not everything that I don't care for.

  • @darcyska
    @darcyska 2 місяці тому

    I mean, basically.... buy stuff and don't stop.
    Really though, I think the first thing to take stock of is to know WHY you want to start a collection, and HOW you're going to do it - what are your funds and space like? Make sure you can start a collection in a way that is both fun and sustainable.
    Sort of like your start to the video, I would say begin with the cornerstones of the genres you love and go from there - you might discover some spinoff bands or venture into the ones that sound sort of like that, and just go from there.

      @BrendonSnyder  3 місяці тому +2

      Building up a boxset collection should transpire much the same way. I’d recommend to start by looking for boxsets that are expanded and deluxe editions of your favorite albums. I prefer boxsets that have lots of rare and unreleased material. I choose to stay away from boxsets that are multi-format like CD, LP, and BluRay Audio all of the same thing. The more CDs included the better. I love getting boxsets that include new remixes of classic albums so I can hear it in a new way. But bottom line find ones you like and you feel comfortable spending the money on so that it’s worth it to you.

    Back in the day, I was a member of both Columbia House and BMG music clubs, where you would get 12 CDs for a penny and then agree to purchase three or four more at regular club prices within the next year (not sure if I'm remembering that correctly, but you did have to pay high price on those CDs to fulfill obligation) and then you would receive monthly notice in mail to either but the featured album or turn it down (they count on people not responding to this at all and then having to pay full price for an album you don't want!) but I was vigilant on returning my "don't want" notices in mail! After completing membership requirements, I would then be sent all kinds of coupons and sale notices, usually ending up saving me truckloads of money, on stellar titles! I collected thousands of CDs through the years from both of these music clubs, probably averaging paying about five dollars per disc, maybe even a little less! They saw that I was a serious music fan and made it hugely enticing for me to buy discs from them.

Sure, fulfilling your membership requirements by having to buy three or four CDs at full price wasn't fun, but cmon now, we already received TWELVE CD'S FOR A FRIGGIN PENNY! And after that, the discounts and monthly coupons were non stop and made buying albums from those clubs at incredibly low prices, with great selection of CDs to choose from. The monthly booklet chalk full of stellar titles! I thrived on receiving monthly mailings from both music clubs, my constant trips to my mailbox, loaded with new music, became one of the highlights of my weeks!

    Affording a good shelf is proving difficult for me. I always spend $200 on CDs or vinyl and then wonder why I can't get a shelf for them lol. Right now, my cd collection is in wire baskets under my bed. I only have a couple hundred, probably less, but it's constantly growing. I just pick up albums I've listened to on Spotify that I enjoyed, if I happen to find it in a store. I've gotten away from buying new albums in the last ten years. Not on purpose, I just haven't had the space or ability to listen to my collection in about 7 years. I'm working on building a music nook in my living room. I want to make it really nice with framed posters or something unique. I have a chair there right now, but the space is very small and I'd kind of rather have all shelves there, next to the record/CD player. I'd also love to get my CDs out from under my bed. But like I said before, finding a shelf is proving difficult. Most of the shelves I find are for books and would have too much space being unused because of that. Not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated greatly. Thanks for always putting out stellar content Brendan! You are like a walking music encyclopedia!

    There is no right, or wrong, way to build a music collection. It's a living, breathing thing where you'll add new music, maybe eventually remove music you no longer listen to, etc. As inexpensive as used CDs can be, try different genres you may enjoy. For example, buy a copy of "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis and give it a spin. You don't have to be a fan of jazz per se to enjoy that album (imo, probably the best album ever released, in any genre). Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys is another classic that is worthy of any collection. There is so much good music available, enjoy!
