On his aria recording he sings it in the ´original´ key, E major. Of course, the question as to whether there is an original key *at all* is moot as it wasn´t originally in the opera at all. Personally I´m not sure about that first F sharp - not in my score, but hey ho. That bit of classic Terfel ´mezza-voce´ towards the end is always a pleasure to hear.
Surprisingly effortful for as early as 2002. Now, 2016, I wonder now about his vocal condition. Still when I heard him in 2007, he sounded very well (but NO Diamond aria!) Still I wonder if too much Wagner is good for him. He seemed to have a great success as Hans Sachs a few years back & maybe this is a better Wagner role for him (more lyric). Too many Wotans & this may do him in too soon!
He's working entirely too hard to get the sound out, especially on the high F#, which sounds more yelled than sung. Having said that, this is a very tough aria for a heavier voice.
I heard many, many voice students better than this. He is in vocal difficulties from the beginning. His color, so beautiful at the start of his career, is GONE!

man he kicked those notes up at the end
Man he looks cool with that cut, beard and shades. Cool stylist work, and always super nice baritone!
Thank you NDR Belcanto for introducing this wonderful bass aria
bravo
brilliant

Nice.

Have the same problem. It's a very hardened tongue and jaw. Can't reach f2 easy, have to apply more air. Same here.

I usually like Terfel, but here... Was he sick that night??
he's shouting...i've seen korean baritone Song Kee Chang perofrm this...and his range is magnificent
A. M. K.
The _many, many voice students_ must've been lip-syncing to Terfel's recordings.
And his vocal color was NOT gone, in this performance.
chilliarches...no one I know has ever
called Warren dull. The guy could
routinely vocalize to high Cs and put
some tenors to shame in the process.
2013 ring à New York il y fera Wotan et Kaufmann sera Siegmund.
I thought it was beautiful... I loved him in this performance. This "shouting" you you refer to is called acting... His high notes are crisp.
Compare with fellow Welshman Sir Geraint Evans' version here.
dopo aver ascoltato Warren e Scwarz ..............

omg... that's crap.
ramey is a good one... these one got only a medium registry that is acceptable..
there is the nature but not the intelligence.
Frankly I have heard him sound much better than this.. His voice is not resonating well this day.
A singer of his name should not do that.
Crap? Seriously? I'm not gonna call it his best... But crap? Overly harsh. It's fine.
