For those that are wondering why Donald Fagan doesn’t sing this, he never sang it. On the album the singer was David Palmer, who only spent a short time with the group. Donald can pick anyone he wants to sing it now, it won’t be like the original.
Just because it's his decision to make doesn't mean it's the right decision. As has already been mentioned, this song is not meant to be sung by a woman.

Certainly far longer than they ever performed the original. I prefer live music to be an interpretive conversation based on the moment. If you want a note-for-note re-creation, might as well sit at home and listen to Can't Buy a Thrill.
I've just seen the Dan at Manchester arena . Brilliant gig BUT this song one of my favourites by them is not for the chics I'm afraid . Yes she sang it well but it's a man's song from a man's heart simple as
Clapton has always advocated for playing things differently. This arrangement is superb. Right up there with the early '90's redux of "Reelin' In the Years". This is just more proof of FB stretching themselves and the intelligence of their fans.
Bob Dylan and Elton John are two others who frequently altered songs from tour to tour. In fact, I think fans came to expect it. Not the only ones, obviously.

Embrace their current creative choices, and who they all are NOW... Don't cling to the old outdated boring same old same old. From some of the comments, you'd think it was a radical reinterpretation. Of this rearrangement the band has been doing for decades now, this is actually the closest it's come to the album version in some time. (If anything, I think giving the trumpet that elaborate solo instead of the sax is the bigger misstep.) Lighten up.

They oversing it. The original is rich but subtle, both vocally and instrumentally--ironically, reviews of that album claim that Palmer oversang his cuts (he didn't). Oversinging is so NOT Steely Dan. Fagan would never let the ladies oversing background vocals like that. He's throwing them a bone to show off their stuff, I guess. But given that this is one of my favorite SD songs, I hate not being able to hear a good live version of it. He should give them a different song to oversing.

Sorry, no. This rendition doesn’t work at all. Palmer’s original interpretation had you believing that he wouldn’t continue doing dirty work. These singers look like they’d be happy to do some dirty work.

lol Fagen doesn't sing this song because he doesn't feel like his voice is up to the task. To all you guys bitchin about their interpretation, I've seen them live twice in the last few years and both times the backup singers were the featured vocalists for this song. It's more of a logistical decision than anything else.
