What shocks me the most is not the huge ammount of Scorpions & Sub-Zeros over other characters (that was to be expected), but the fact that none of those companies have released a single figure of Shang Tsung.
You know, the OG Final Boss of the franchise.

Not just focusing on the Scorpion/Sub-Zero look what McFarlane did to their figures. They used the MK11's alternate skins as a cash grab to sell more figures. With countless Scorpions, Sub-Zeros and Spawns. Then after so many lines, they stopped using figure promotion art on boxes and just used all Scorpion artwork instead
The lack of Shang Tsung figures is shameful, him and to a lesser extent Quan Chi are the schemers that hold Mortal Kombat together and push the story.
The Shangs in my collection are from the Hasbro Mortal Kombat (GI Joe) line, the Infinite Concepts (COGJIT) line from the 2000’s, and the Argentinian knock off line.
I'll never be able to get Quan Chi and Shang Tsung figures to kiss. 😭
It is weird the first and one of the most iconic bosses in the series gets jack. He falls right into the nostalgic era and he’s a fan favorite.

When I was a child I had a little Spider-Man figurine from when Spider Man 3 was being promoted, and when you put the toy in the freezer, it would turn from red suit Spider, to alien suit Spider, and vice versa when you ran it under hot water. Imagine a Bi-Han figurine that had the same gimmick:

That would be awesome but remember, Mortal Kombat is a game with a Mature rating and even these toys (excluding Funko Pops) have an “adult collector” warning or something like that. Nothing less, that an extremely interesting idea. :)

Jade actually had an MK9 statue that I regrettably sold years ago. I can't remember who made it but it was a pretty solid statue. I might be able to find pictures of it.
Wish I could get my hands on one of those but each one is going for like $300-400. Wish we could get something Jade related that is actually affordable for most people

I don’t see an issue with Sub-Zero snd Scorpion figures always being made. They’re without a doubt the most popular MK characters, and if you try to get a popular character that doesn’t have any recent figures on the aftermarket, it’ll cost you a lot.
It's because the toys are becoming stale they don't do all the characters we've seen sub and scorpion a million times

It's not necessarily that they get made, it's how often they get made in contrast with others, especially if the series is all "we're moving on, we're introducing new characters, look at the Kombat Kids! You all liked Kotal, right? How about D'Vorah and Erron Black as well?" It's fine to have legacy characters in your new series, but not one toy line gives you the complete Cage family.
The problem is that they release 300 hundred Sub-Zeros and Scorpions in the same line

I don't understand why the default McFarlane ones are so rare. You've got the molds, crank out a thousand of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden with every new release and I guarantee they sell out. I'm waiting on a reprint for all 3 that I don't think is ever coming
Its probably intentionally to inflate the market. McFarlane is known to make figures rare, then rerelease them when they hit max value.
It's so werid to me that Mileena hasn't had a figure since the 90s given how popular she is with fans... I've always assumed based on what I know of the fanbase that Mileena was at least a bit more popular than Kitana is. I also consider them a pair; if one is there, the other should be, like Scorpion and Sub-Zero
When a fan community for freaking *MUGEN* of all things is doing a way better job at representing characters than any of the official games and merchandise are, even with some of the alleged old hated ones, and little to no presence of characters after MK9, then you *know* you screwed up…
Can we also acknowledge how many of the ninjas get shafted as recolors? As a huge fan of Reptile and Smoke it sucks when all their figures are just the recolored classic ninjas, no 3D Era designs, no 2011 designs, always just green scorpion
Tbh, I don't even think its so much Reptile and Ermac's later designs getting shafted as its easier to just do recolors of the classic mold and pass such laziness off as nostalgia fanservice.

Hell, early in the series Scorpion killed B-han, got his revenge, realized Sub Zero was innocent and the two basically became pals.

Man, after seeing Noob and Kabal actually get figures, the best looking figures in the entire line, I desperately want an MK11 Shang Tsung figure man, just imagine all the money it would make with the different variants. It writes itself man, even the accessories, just give him his flaming skulls, his scrolls, and some kind of soul orb item - it's not hard.

i love the MK11 line (even if i can't find a original Sub Zero) but theres no excuse for all the Spawns/Joker and the 2nd Baraka....

McFarlane has stated in the past that he doesn't do a lot of female figures because he doesn't think that they will sell.

I mean the only excuse for spawn is that it is better spawn figure than any previous attempts which isn’t saying much since most spawns figures are statutes with ugly ass articulation
The MK11 line is not dead yet. Todd tease a klassic Spawn figure, so we will probably see more with it.

Speaking of Mortal Kombat Snake, there's an idea I want to share with you:
The death of Kung Lao, Shao Kahn's defeat, Liu Kang becoming the Mortal Kombat Champion, and the start of a much bigger Outworld Civil War that would actually stop dividing people into two very constraining camp. (Also tried to make Reiko an interesting character.)
First off: "Kahn" was a term created by Shao Kahn using his own last name. He's such a boss.
In the first tournament, Kung Lao is scared for his best friend's safety and still a bit resentful he wasn't chosen.
So he sneaks onto the boat and into the island and encounters a lot of MK2 characters.
After a while he sees Goro and his blood boils. He was talking in the tribune with a future Reiko and Scarlet, and other characters are witnessing the match, but he immediately teleports in the island to settle his beef with Goro just before he kills Sonya. Since he pulled a sneak attack, Kintaro was ready to end his life, but Goro stops his fellow Shokan and accepts hid destiny. "A champion of Mortak Kombat shouldn't have been defeated by such a petty trick. You can have your win." But Kung Lao feels discontent and doesn't finish off Goro.
This leads Shao Kahn so taunt the monk, he senses danger from him so he starts by being nice before verbally stabbing him. Liu Kang tries to stop his friend but in vain and after a good fight that devolves into a smackdown, Kung Lao gets killed.
This enrages Liu Kang and he fights him. At first, despite one or two good hits, Shao Lahn plays on Liu Kang's rage to make him predictable and he smacks him down. However Shao Kahn doesn't kill him. Instead, he makes a grandiose speech about the inhabitants of Outworld being deserving of only the best of leader. One that is strong in all sense of the word.
So he then smacks his hammer down and calls out Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Raiden, and even Reptile (Who he sensed was starting to get rebellious ever since he met Cage.) "Come earthworlders and you Saurian traitor! If I, the emperor, is really worthy of such a mantle over your realm, then I, should be stronger than ALL OF YOUR BEST FIGHTERS AT ONCE!" The crowd cheers and we have Skarlet and Reiko reminiscing over the time Shao Kahn showed his superiority by doing the same thing to edenian warriors.
However a weakened voice rises against him. "No Shao Kahn."
"Who dares interrupt the Emperor? Show yourself foolish soul!
The emperor turns around and see the monk he brutally beat down with an inch of his life stand up. "I am your opponent."
Liu Kang then turns to Raiden and they come to the silent agreement to leave him alone for this.
He then goes towards the corpse of Kung Lao, and unties his bandana, taking Kung Lao's hat and strapping it in his back, by using his bandana and putting it over his shoulder, before doing a small prayer.
Shao Kahn mocks him: "An ill time to be doing arts and crafts earthrealmer human."
The crowd laughs.
Liu Kang stands up with his eyes closed.
He takes a breather and puts himself into a combat stance.
His eyes open. There is fire in them but it's a controlled one.
Shao Kahn tries to taunt him again but it doesn't work.
"In life we may have had our fights, our fights of ego... In a way my existence is what caused him great pain."
Shao Kahn, for the first time in his life, something he never felt once even with Onaga, was afraid. As he sees the spirit of the man he just murdered materialize in blue flames. One that burn harder than the Sun.
"But in death, we are finally one."
As soon as he utters these words Liu Kang's physical form and Nung Lao's spirit merge in the eyes of Shao Kahn who begins to see an abstract version of the Great Kung Lao in front of him.
They fight but it's brief and Shao Kahn ends up being impaled in the chest by Liu Kang's fist.
"No taunt of yours can shake my beliefs."
After his defeat the crowd stayed silent in pure shock. Their emperor was (seemingly) dead. Shang Tsung immediately fled the scene with the body. However Goro and Kotal Kahn called off the match with the new victor. Mentioning that a new Kahn might get elected another time.
As the crowd leaves, Reiko and Skarlet are left alone completely flabbergasted.
Skarlet is very confused but suddenly thirsts for Liu Kang's divine blood but Reiko, who has been with her for a long time now, calms her down.
As for him, after the match, Reiko comes to the conclusion that physical strength, something he never had, was not what was required to become a good emperor. There would always be someone stronger than you in the world. But he then remembered the effectiveness of the Emperor's words. Ones that could rally anyone and play into the emotions of one's opponents to force them to make mistakes.
With a newfound resolve and a dark expression, he knows what he must do to become the new Kahn.
(Reiko might suffer from a rare illness that can only appear on mixed outworlders/eldian babies that drastically reduces your physical capability. Or he's just an average dude with a silver tongue.)
This sets up the civil war of Outworld between four factions: The Will of the Sun (Led by Kotal Kahn), the Voice of the People (Led by Reiko), the Emperor's Absolute Power (Led by Shao Kahn after he recovers and injects himself with a bit of Onaga's DNA to survive the hit), and finally the Party for Independence (Led both by Reptile and Kitana.)
(Onaga was the leader of the Saurians so when Shao Kahn and Goro finally killed him, Goro having no idea of Kahn's underhanded method, Shao Kahn ordered a genocide of all Saurians to make sure none could rise and become as strong as Onaga. The two chameleons managed to escape thanks to their invisibility and Reptile was spared thanks to his fighting spirit despite only being a kid. So Shao Kahn brainwashed him and made him his servant.)
This Civil takes place either before MK2 or replaces it completely before transitioning to Earthrealm's invasion of MK3.
What's the tl;dr version of this comment?

-Kung Lao infiltrates the Island during the first tournament and he encounters a lot of MK2 characters in parallel of the MK1 crew. (He proves his might here.)
-His blood boils when meeting Goro and he beats him with a sneak attack after Goro proved his might by beating Sonya and Johnny.
-Goro is actually honorable and recognizes his loss despite the dirty move. Kung Lao spares him, ashamed.
-Shao Kahn kills him after a fight, where he used his anger by taunting him, and he plays for the crowd.
-Liu Kang gets consumed by rage and loses horribly too.
-Shao Kahn boldly claims he can take all of Earthrealm (+ Reptile who silently rebelled.)
-Liu Kang stops him, and after recollecting his thoughts and sharing with the emperor his beliefs, kicks his ass and badly injures him in the chest. (As Shao Kahn in fear, sees the great Kung Lao reborn in this fusion between Liu Kang and Kung Lao's spirit.)
-Shang Tsung flees with the emperor's body. (He'll inject him with Onaga's cells that they kept hidden for years, to make him survive.)
-Reiko, a very weak and ill Eldian/Outworlder mixed-race, gets inspired to become the next Kahn himself by rallying the people with his speech.
-A four-way Civil War will tear Outworld. (Basically: KK vs Shao Kahn vs Reiko vs Reptile and Kitana)
-Onaga was the king of Saurian.
I think there's more retcons in this one comment than there was in MK(2011).

Take a guess how many MK figures I own.
If you guessed "None", you're correct as Reptile is usually poorly done with wack accessories, or falls into the same category as Kintaro where the only figure is well over $100, meant to be kept in the package and never touched.
kintaro at least has figures come out, where ones like ashrah will never have one. only way you'll get some of those is 3d printing which seems to be where the girls are getting created.
@@feuryie Kintaro basically has one statue, and one figure, but the statue is usually in excess of $300 and the figure sits at $130. In terms of practicality, it's in much the same ballpark, though considering I want Moloch or Drahmin, I'm also aware of the "no chance in hell of being made".
@@legionbeast i think all the bosses are like that price? i don't really see cheap goros around. though yeah, drahmin and moloch are of a sort that unless someone starts doing 'all' characters you're not going to get them. i mean we should be getting mileenas and sonyas commonly and even those two are rare, much less characters that actually are rare like ashrah or drahmin.
I’m glad this is being discussed. Since I started playing MK, Kenshi has always been my favorite and I have been eager to have some sort of figure or collectible of him... but of course, one hasn’t been made officially.
NRS is most certanly, the culprit for most of your complaints. Generally speaking toy companies are bound by contract to ALWAYS release the flagship characters the licensor deems "special" in the couple of first waves even overpowering the current cast of characters feautured in the current piece of media. Talking by experience, this is a problem with most long-spanning franchises not just MK. Despite this I agree that the figure companies are also pretty unispired. Some companies tend to add at least one or two, not very popular character(s) per wave targeted for more experienced fans, but in this case they don't seem to have the passion or orignality to do even this.
SNK have also been just as lazy. They just do Kyo, Iori, Terry and Mai and think they're done. I refuse to support these companies until they get over their laziness.

Agreed on so many points. MK has SO MANY character they can do merchandise for and all have faithful fanbases. Yet here we are with barely anything to show for it. 🤦♂️🤷♂️

Barring Kitana, there's a totally ludicrous balance of male-female characters here. Why the lack of Sonyas? And why is getting a Shang Tsung so difficult?!
And, I gotta be honest, I like Klassic costumes in the games, and often prefer them to their current equivalents. MK2 Female Ninjas and UMK3 Male Ninjas are just something I need, plus some extra gubbins for character are my jam.
As a Johnny Cage fan, it surprised me to see (several years ago, when I first searched) that there were very few action figures of him. Don't know why Storm Collectibles hasn't done one yet.

Shockingly Street Fighter has similar problems in terms of statues I can't find any of a lot of characters
if it helps to some degree, Storm Collectibles did say that they've gotten a lot of requests for both Tremor & Chameleon, who have never been represented in figure form and figures I'd love to see. especially MKA Chameleon who is just dying to be made into action figures. and they did show off their molds for MKII Kitana & Mileena, which I'm sure they would also use for Jade. hopefully they'll announce those figures soon since Liu Kang & his dragon form are finally coming out after being teased quite a while ago. even Kintaro is finally getting a figure made, but god damn it's taken far too long for that figure to be released and has been delayed multiple times. you'd think that most toy companies now a days would finally get their shit together and have a set in stone release date and a production schedule to prevent this kind of nonsense.

Hit the nail right on the head with that last part. How are people supposed to care when they make no effort to make people care? I guess I'll never get that DA Frost, MK4 Sonya, or Ferra-tor figures because we need another 10 Scorpions instead.
This just makes me think of Power Rangers and it’s obsession with only highlighting the 1st season of Mighty Morphin’
If there was atleast onaga, shang tsung, mileena and cassie cage figures, i'd buy them immediately and love the line that did them.

You know, Snake, I think about this everyday. And as always you hit every nail. I truly wish that one day we'd see a full-scale toyline, man. I was even drafting what it would be like as a Marvel Legends style scale. Like wave one could be, Scorpion, Quan Chi, Kitana, Johnny Cage, Baraka and Kenshi, Goro BAF, then move onto wave 2. Subzero (Masked MK2), Raiden, Jax (with metal arms variant), Mileena, Shang Tsung (MK1 and just put youthful Shang in a later wave), Shao Kahn BAF... You get the idea. Do 6 waves of 6 figures including variants and BAFs, that's enough to include Kombatants from later games. And move onto two-packs, army builders... Hhhhhh. Man, that would just make my fandom all worth while.

I’m actually surprised how many figures Kitana got over the years and how little Sonya got. I always assumed that Sonya is more popular in the series than Kitana.
They're relatively equal from what I've seen. When it comes to the female cast, I'm shocked that there's next to nothing of Mileena. She has a massive, dedicated fanbase that would literally commit war crimes to get her into an MK game

From what I saw online over the years these has somewhat same amount of popularity (Mileena fans were just very vocal in last few years, I wouldn’t say that her fanbase is much bigger than others) but Kitana featured almost in every line while Mileena and Sonya got next to nothing even in 2010s. Which is surprising considering that Sonya got overall more screen time during NRS trilogy and Mileena also gained even more popularity.

As a long time action figure collector, I think you did a great job covering this topic. You were very thorough, as always, and I wouldn't mind seeing more takes on MK toys from you in the future. Shit, if you haven't done it already, I would totally be up for a video on you're MK action figure collection.
I honestly am shocked there isn't a Shang-Tsung figure by any of these people. I can make excuses for certain characters being included or excluded like Scorpion and Sub-Zero being the most popular, Raiden and Liu-Kang are major characters and Kitana is Liu-Kang's love interest, 3D era characters often being disliked or mocked for no reason, etc. But for Shang-Tsung...he's the first boss of the entire series, a MAJOR antagonist and main character who was the focal point of Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon (where he almost got to Blaze), MK vs DCU, MK9 and ESPECUALLY MK11. He's a big deal in MK and probably a huge fan favorite in MK11 with his inclusion likely carrying Aftermath, how have you not made figures for him? I can understand Ermac or Havik, even Kenshi because as cool as he is, he's a jobber sadly, but Shang-Tsung? Even Quan-Chi gets representation but not his better?
Dang i really missed my Mk 9 Scorpion and Sub zero figs also Klassic Scorpion/Subzero/Sector/Cyrax/Smoke but sadly i had to sell them.

I had the Johnny Cage figure pre-ordered back in the day. The retailer randomly cancelled it so I missed it. Now I'd have to pay upward of £80 for it. No rereleases or recolours as far as I can see. Very cool McFarlane, very cool.

Todd McFarlane said a while ago he didn't think female characters sold well as action figures. It's why we haven't seen ant female Kharacters from his line.
In regards to action figures aimed at kids, who will actually play with said toys.
The MK fans are mostly adults and would be buying these mostly for display. Statues would be a better option. There's some really great ones. Love that one of Raiden at 6:37

Because of how some alt costumes were included in these figurine line ups, it got me thinking... I'm not sure how much interest into character designs you might have, but how would a video talking about your favorite and least favorite costumes in the series sound? MK characters have so many designs that there are some which stand out from the rest, good or bad. It's always interesting to know which ones people love/hated and for what reasons.
For a game franchise boasting how its not sexist, its funny that there are virtually NO female figures. Of every possible moving figure toyline, going way back 30 years to the G.I. Joe era Kitana has only been a figure 3 times, Sonya twice, and Mileena once, in the rare toy island version.
They didn't make a Shang Tsung figure was someone high when they didn't make the figure. No blaze, Taven, Daegon, Onaga, or Shujinko how do the people who made them ever seen mk after 3

I get how in every line you might have Scorpion and Sub-Zero; they're kind of the poster boys for the series and almost guaranteed to be in the game but to think you have all these incredible-looking characters that no company wants to make a figure of is unreasonable. I figure it's money or contracts that hold them back. I mean, the ninjas are guaranteed bucks whereas someone like, let's say Ashrah is a gamble. All the same, when you have these characters in the line-up, and you see other brands have never branched out far from some mainstays, you'd think you'd take a small risk and see what happens. Duplicates, unless they're really deserving, are ridiculous, though I include McFarlane's three Spawns because he knows where his money is.
To be a little bit fair, I think the problem with all these toylines having mostly the same Klassic kharacters is that they tend to not last long so every time a new one starts they really just have to start with familiar faces and maybe one or two newcomers in order to get people's attention, it'd would been strange if, say, the MKX line had Kung Jin, Ferra/Torr, D'Vorah and Tremor and like maybe Kitana... and then the line was done without Scorpion or Raiden.
I think if any of these toylines lasted longer and focused on a specific game we might've gotten more kharacters outside of the usual suspects, like what Street Fighter did with NECA and SOTA.
With the statues I guess it is a bit different because it is understandable to focus on the more iconic kharacters given the kind of collectibles they are... like, sure, having big, expensive and detailed Scorpion and Sub-Zero statues makes sense but it'd be weird if they announced Jacqui and Collector statues

It is pretty annoying that only a handful of characters get figures. I was hoping for a classic style version of Jax from McFarlane but I got tired of waiting so I bit the bullet and got the MK9 version from Jazwares.
As a 3D era fan. It pisses me off that I can't get any action figures of any of the 3d era characters.
I would even buy a Hsu Hao action figure since I enjoyed playing him. That's how desperate I am to get any action figure of a 3D era character.

I love collecting things pertaining to my favorite video games, but I'm also a completist in the since that if there's gonna be character models made, I want them ALL. If a new MK game came out and every single playable character was sold as a figurine, you bet your ass I'd collect every single one. But since that's literally never happened, I never want to because I always feel the collection is incomplete.

In a AMA Todd likes to do randomly on his website, figure manufacturers have a much more difficult time now then they ever did back then when making them for existing properties(most likely referring to MK) as before they would have a bundle of characters to make figures for when they got a series rights(like when they did anime figures such as tenchi muyo) but now you pretty much get the right AND your told what your allowed to make figures for which most likely means WB 100% is calling the shots on who's allowed to get a figure and stuff, im assuming since spawn is owned by Todd he was allowed to make as many as he wants(and since that's his poster boy and as a fanboy i buy anything from that edge lord series) but usually McFarlands toys has no issues making figures of women, hell anytime they got animes the women of the series would have figures before the heroes.
He used to be, until the world became woke. Fans had to beg him for years to release a Wanda action figure, and he claimed, "women don't sell.." 😕

Sad news, Storm Collectibles lost the license thanks to WB themselves and we could't even get the final 10 classic character.
I've been an action figure collector for decades now and the unfortunate reality behind MK, as an action figure license, is that it often doesn't sell well enough for these lines to continue. That's why Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden are ALWAYS guaranteed, because those are the big three that sell.
That and up until recently we haven't had mind blowing MK figures up until Storm got the license. But Storm's issue is that they're EXTREMELY slow with releases, and MK is obviously not their main focus anymore. And they have revealed Kitana and Mileena, but they've been in fucking limbo for about 6 years now.. But I hope that their line continues, as they're the only ones to give us a (somewhat) consistent line so far.
Unfortunately though I don't see any line giving us any 3D era characters, as much as I'd love for Storm to do it eventually.
P.S. The buffboy MK figures from Funko were meant to be Masters of the Universe style. I don't know why, but a lot of franchises get MOTU tribute toys.

Would most mk fans want a Tanya? Sindel? Kenshi? Sure. I'd love to add kenshi to my kollection. The hard-core will buy. Then what? That means thousands of leftover figures on shelves Bc the AVERAGE gamer don't know who the fuck they are. The mascot characters sell because they're bigger then mk it's self and the average kid will want them.

There's countless accounts on instagram, tiktok, and even here on UA-cam, that collect and post toy hunt vlogs, etc. And they all will do unboxings of mk figures, statues and so on. And if you look at their rooms and collections, they're massive and are made up of just about anything you can think of. You can watch one video and see scorpion, subzero, sonic, Mario, cloud, link, Pikachu....we get those characters over and over bc they are the most well known outside of the series.
Tommy next door walks into Walmart and sees scorpion on the shelf right beside ashram. Who's he buying? Scorpion. Bc he KNOWS who scorpion is. Thats all It comes down too. It's no different then street fighter with their big 3-5 characters that you see on all their merch when you walk into a Walmart.

Coming late to this, but I know how you feel. Especially since my favorite character's Mileena, it's ridiculous how, with the exception of a Funk Pop, I got to cut an arm and a leg in order to even get one figure from her. Heck, I remember the 1:3 statue of her MKX design being almost $3000 DOLLARS!!!
The demand is clearly there. It's just that unless they're names both start with the letter S and they're men, good luck finding any (unless you're willing to shell out to a scalper)
