I find it hilarious that Jade calls Kotal "open-minded" with a "strong spine".
Ironically, Shao portrays himself as the more tolerant (aka open-minded) of the two. Since his debut, Shao was very inclusive with his entourage (reptiles, bug people, Shokans, Centaurs, Edenians, Tarkatans, even Earthrealmers like Kano) and truly respects and loves Sindel in this game (and apparently only ever had eyes for her) while Kotal is extremely racist towards Tarkatans (driving them to literal extinction) and Earthrealmers, had concubines in Jade's absence and slept with fucking D'Vorah.
The fact that Kotal was going to execute a guy for stealing food even though he was starving and had no other choice proves he's not that different from Shao Kahn.

They did Sonya x Johnny so dirty. In MKX, they are introduced as an already divorced couple, buy by the end, they fall in love again. Then, in MK11 they have like 30sec of actual romantic interaction before she dies for nothing. Kinda sad, since they are my favorite couple in MK
SupportGaming 2020, the Sonya X Jax relationship would only work after Johnny Cage being a fucking idiot and walking into the Revenant Chamber to turn back Scorpion, Subzero, and Jax back to their human forms, so that way the Jax x Sonya relationship could have Jacqui Briggs together, and Johnny being married to Vera would still make their daughter equally as powerful as Jax’s and Sonya’s daughter.

Also, the few interactions that they have like "She called me Johnny" and the one at the beginning of MK11 are actually great. The writers actually know how this couple is supposed to work, they just want to make stupid decisions for drama :/

Like, part of the reason I like Kotal x Jade is probably 95% because of how the voice actors deliver their lines, particularly Phil LaMarr switching from his loud commanding tone to this incredibly earnest affection. That said, for MK11 it comes out of nowhere and MK11's interactions and storyline contradict Kotal's backstory information in MKX to make it happen.
Namely, Nightwolf asks where Kotal was during the tournament, and Kotal says he was being tortured in the flesh pits and didn't escape until Shang Tsung was killed like a bitch in the MK3 time period. This doesn't add up since Reptile becomes buds with Kotal all because Reptile failed to win in the MK1 tournament and Shao Kahn told Kotal that Reptile should be killed for his failure, but Kotal knew Reptile would be better as an assassin and not a head to head fighter and spared him... Which he couldn't do if he's in the flesh pits and doesn't get out of them until shortly before Shao Kahn is fought by elder god empowered Raiden.
Further MK11 interactions imply that Kotal was Shao Kahn's general easily as far back as 10,000 years ago being the personal body guard of Sindel until her death, which I find hard to believe that if she died on his watch that Shao Kahn wouldn't rain hell down on Kotal's head for that happening, which would mean he was in the flesh pits for 10,000 years? But if Kotal knew Jade 10,000 years ago, that would mean he was an adult general while, at best, Jade was a child who could have no real memory of the events of Jerrod's death and the conquering of the realm (just like Kitana) and he was imprisoned before they COULD know each other.
Apparently the time of Kotal's imprisonment is as much a mystery as "Who killed Jerrod?" which could be it's own murder mystery in this clusterfuck of writing.
As for that D'vorah line, it really comes out of nowhere. I'm tempted to believe it's more of D'vorah's lying to make her temporary servitude to Kotal sound deeper than it really was since in every other fucking situation, everything in regards to D'vorah puts her on fucking par with the Xenomorphs; from the fact that her blood is Toxic to SKARLET, to the fact that every inch of her body is containing hundreds of thousands of various flesh eating bugs, and so much as a little poke with one of her spines = enough venom to kill Scorpion, I don't think anyone but Geras could stick his dick in that and recover from it.

I like how in MK 2 endings Mileena gets to rule with Baraka while in Armageddon is Baraka's ending where he takes her as his queen I wished they did something more with it but at least is always hinted in most games

I think Bihan x Sareene had good chemistry just like Lu Kang x Kitana. Don't get me wrong but this ship worked as Bi Han had motivated her to be a better person even in MKX Sareena admits about. If they were nothing like that than MK mythology we won't get the choice of sparing her.

I have no actual proof of it, but I've heard more than a few times that Frost was going to be revealed as Sareena and Bi Han's daughter at some point before MIDWAY Games died. Not gonna lie, I actually wish it were canon.

I don't mind Jade having a LOVE interest. Not sure I would choose Kotal personally, but having divided loyalties actually puts some conflict back into her motivations, something she hasn't had since the late 90s.
She had conflict in MK 2011 up until Shao Khan turned into a cartoon villain.
Jade having conflict with how Kotal rules things to how she sees things was probably the only compelling thing about their relationship, other than that it felt so forced.

I think it works... it just wasn't built correctly and viewing at all the facts, it wouldn't fit. Kotal was tortured for the entirety of MK9 and Jade dies in MK9... so they're relationship is already hard to believe to have existed prior, especially when Kitana is trying to set her up with Kung Lao.
Again, Kotal could work, they just really needed to make it a love at first sight type deal or say she visited him in the flesh pits or w/e.

Mileena was a relationship with Reiko in the comics. He complains about taking her to bed, she explicitly states he's the only person she trusts. Honestly, the comic made me feel sorry for her. I will take the bullet now and say I thought his storyline was the only thing the comic did that was even slightly interesting. At least as far as the story itself, the conclusion of Reiko just being a vessel for Shinnok's amulet (not even Shinnok himself, wtf) was idiotic.

For all we know none of these couples will be together in the next timeline. Seriously, I don’t know why I should get invested in any of these characters if they’re just gonna keep retconning and erasing shit. Never mind romance in MK, this franchise is suffering overall from the lack of visionary writers that are like John Tobias.
Liu Kang and Kitana, as well as Johnny and Sonya are basically permanent in my eyes.
I continue to be amazed how easy it is now to see some "okay" stuff in MK9 and MKX, especially the former, when we know how much worse things can get. MK9 did justice to the essence of most of the characters (out-of-nowhere retcons, i.e. Kabal, notwithstanding), and MKX had a lot of interesting ideas, many legit great pre-fight dialogues and managed to follow the MK9's plot without the need to lie about what happened there.
I remember Tobias saying that he regretted canonizing Liu/Kitana, but to me it never felt forced, even though the potential developments and dynamics were never really explored in either timeline.
Also, I'm not at all a shipper, but Tanya and Mileena... damn. Just... *damn*

It was kind of done better in MK9, but outside of that it hasn't gotten anywhere. The relationship that should have a build up should be the likes of Kotal and Nitara.
Tanya's back stabby nature and dialogue with Rain lead me to suspect that that affair was one sided. Since Tanya knew the amulet was evil and killing Mileena but encouraged her to use it anyways, it's likely she was just using Mileena to begin with. So I have no idea where that ending where she has a baby with Tanya even came from, especially since Mileena's sister issue has always been her defining trait in the old cannon and wanting to be Khanum in the new.
For a character who is supposed to be so important to Jax's story arc, it's troubling how neither X nor 11 has Vera appear on screen. Not even in a picture.
Wait, wasn't "Bob" Taven's original name before his current one was revealed? Is Cassie actually dating Taven?
How could they date if taven is still frozen in the pillar?

I, seriously, miss the subtlety of Erron Blacks character in MKX. He showed interest in the females but wasn't so brazen like MK11. He's basically Kano Jr there, like Jerrick. He didn't have grand motivation like everyone else but he was centered and didn't let it get in the way of actual business.

So okay this might be insane, but wouldn’t Kotal and Sheeva have made an at least interesting couple in MK11?
Like, imagine Sheeva WAS one of Goro’s wives, who despite her commitments was in love with Kotal. They could never be together because Goro was himself a powerful warrior, and had a good standing with Shao Kahn. But once they were both at least presumed dead in the aftermath of MK3/9, KK and Sheeva think they see a chance for their relationship, only for circumstances to drive them apart when they both take up leadership roles for two peoples who aren’t ready to trust one another again.

Honestly the best relationship development in MK is Johnny and Sonja by far. People would argue Kitana and Liu Kang but Kitana and Liu Kang barely have happy canonical endings til MK11, While Johnny and Sonja actually have a kid together.

In MKX, Cassie has an intro with Bo Rai Cho that implies he and Li Mei may have done it. It's probably Cassie just teasing him but there could of been a spark between them, especial after working together in Deception (I know that's a different timeline but still)
johnny and sonya are the best things to come out of the new timeline. I absolutely love the whole kombat kids story but wish we had gotten more interesting characters out of it. Cassie is an absolutely great character though. I never liked Liu Kang too much so I love how much focus was on Johnny.
