Great video! After watching this I'm even happier with my choice to use the GV-USB2 since I'm strictly doing VHS capture. I'm a Linux user at heart, so when I first started capturing it was attempted on Linux, but I was having driver issues so I set up a Windows machine just to avoid headaches since I was already having enough trying to find the best capture setup combo for the price. Also, most people suggest staying away from using OSB for capturing and since that seems to be the only supported option for Linux it was just another reason to set up Windows for capturing. I'm using AmarecTV to capture and Virtualdub with QTGMC for deinterlacing and editing/compressing.
@@ReasonablyBritish 310 today, but I think it was as high as 312 earlier, so I think those two plebs either came to regret their decision to subscribe, or decided to heed your warnings about their sanity, unlike every explorer in a H.P. Interestingly enough, I actually do need to know about a good leather glue, eventually, so that video is turns out to be useful beyond the humor value. @@ReasonablyBritishat 7:50 you mention square pixels being wrong but if you know you are only uploading the video to UA-cam I would try square pixels. UA-cam doesn’t care about PAR DAR and flags. It will resize your video to square pixels if you upload it as 720 by 480. If you capture at 640 by 480 then stretch it to 720 by 480 UA-cam will shrink it down to 640 by 480 automatically. You don’t really want a bunch of resizing. Also the digital faq guys use a lossless codec in an AVI container to prevent loss during deinterlacing and other things. I am not sure about adding flags with OBS. I haven’t used OBS but it’s really not meant for capturing VHS. It’s screen recording software.
You are the ONLY UA-camr that makes me laugh and that I trust when it comes to reviewing analog video capture devices. Your test pattern comparisons are the only true test of image quality. Could you PLEASE review some that will work with Macs. I do plan on using OBS along with a quality device that has an iOS driver. I can't find any definitive videos...anywhere!
Elgato. The Chinese one is a joke. Although if you’ve got a hi8 camcorder and an old-ish Mac, you may be able to FireWire the camcorder directly to the Mac and use OBS. I haven’t done that in a long time, so it MIGHT work. If you really care about quality, neither of these are good.
@@ReasonablyBritish the only port on the camera is an A/V out.. not sure about the FireWire thing. Also, I must say your video was well crafted and so fun to watch for such a basic subject!
@jeanguillaume4589 many thanks, good sir! AV out usually means you’d still need a capture device. If it had FireWire, it would likely say DV or 1394. Oh well…. Good luck!
I tested the audio quality using MD Fourier and it's excellent. And actually stereo ;p Really sucks this didn't have any kind of Time Base Correction though ;/
Even the easycap cards have good audio to be fair(though they don't all use the same chips, and some are apparently mono pretending to be stereo), they're significantly better for audio capture from a tape deck or turntable etc, than they are for video.

Thanks a lot for the recommendation !! I had bought an Elgato one but I decided to end it back to Amazon... and ordered this japanese one... Problem is I don't know to capture Pal VHS using OBS... could you record an small (or not) video explaining how to? I'd appreciate it a lot !! Thanks for your work !!
i read that the IOData is really the gold standard. i wonder if this true. i bought the Elgato video capture device, but i don't have a VCR with S-Video output, so after trying to capture some video footage, i do see some hazyness when playing the created video file. i will try to get an IOData.
Interesting to see, if youre considering continuing this series could you maybe look at the startech devices? They have an s-video usb device similar to this one and a usb 3.0 with other input options, would be great to see how they compare to all the other devices you have, it would be amazing if you created a repository of all analog converters out there (or at least the notable ones) cheers!
Did you install windows on your Mac? If so, what path did you take? I’ve got a MacBook Pro (M1 Silicon) and I’ve just bought the GV-USB2, I’m looking at using parallels with windows 11 but unsure how it will function.
I tried virtualizing Windows under UTM, but it didn’t work. Ended up wiping a spare Linux machine to install Windows on bare metal. There may be way to do it with a virtual, but I didn’t find it. Good luck!
You'll just be able to run ARM Windows 11 on that machine and I'm not sure the windows drivers will work without issues on it. I also am looking into it and I guess I'll just have to use my desktop pc which will probably catch fire from all the dust it has accumulated through the years I haven't used it

@@ReasonablyBritish if you want to digitize old tapes, would you use the tink 5x? I wanna deinterlace with QTGMC so I guess the tink won't work because it'll spit out a progressive image right
One thing that may be good about Elgato is that it can tolerate VHS line noises unlike GV-USB2 which creates dropped frames and shows a blue screen(not the Windows error blue screen)for a few seconds, but as you mentioned I appreciate the weave deinterlace to preserve both fields in one frame for raw capturing.

Can we agree that we all love Blazing Saddles and the like, and that we wish that comedy didn't have to look over its shoulder at all times?
