Par ses fonctions à la paroisse de la Madeleine à Paris entre 1877 et 1905 (maître de chapelle puis organiste), Gabriel Fauré est amené à accompagner des offices, diriger des chœurs. C’est dans ce cadre qu’il envisage la composition d’un requiem dont l’écriture s’étale sur plusieurs années (1888-1900). S’il correspond à l’époque où Fauré perd coup sur coup son père (1885) puis sa mère (1887), il ne semble pas avoir été composé pour une intention particulière. Fauré écrivit plus tard : « Mon Requiem a été composé pour rien… pour le plaisir, si j’ose dire ! ». Il témoigna également à propos de l’esprit de l’œuvre : « Mon Requiem, on a dit qu’il n’exprimait pas l’effroi devant la mort. Quelqu’un l’a appelé une berceuse de la mort. Mais c’est ainsi que je ressens la mort, comme une délivrance heureuse, plutôt que comme un passage douloureux ». Une œuvre plutôt apaisée, lumineuse, qui a la particularité de ne pas contenir de Dies irae, mais qui inclut un In paradisum, traditionnellement chanté à l’issue d’une cérémonie d’obsèques. Fauré écrit son requiem pour chœur (composé à l’époque uniquement d’hommes, enfants et adultes) et orchestre, ce dernier ayant la particularité de ne pas comprendre de violons, excepté le violon solo dans le Sanctus, ni de bois. En plus d’un magnifique traitement de la masse chorale, le Requiem fait entendre d’émouvantes parties solistes. C’est le cas de le ‘Pie Jesu’, comme lors de la création de l’ouvrage, la présente version fait appel à une voix d’enfant, ou celle du baryton dans le ‘Libera me’ et ‘Offertoire’. Tiene este inmenso Requiem algo muy hondo con la paz interior. A mí me ha ayudado en momentos duros. Y, reconozco que, está grabación Corboz, es fantástica. Desde el inicio contiene una cadencia, ritmo y expresión de enorme plenitud. Es una grabación magistral. Gracias por ella.
I have over ten different Faure requiem LP records and CDs but From 30 years ago when I got this version on CD, this recording has been my favorite version. The most beautiful part that makes this version so different is the chorus. Especially the part from 15:51. So far I couldn’t find any other recordings can compare with master Corboz. It is 100% heavenly and makes you feel bright with warmth around you. Thanks for your uploading!
You have to wonder. It's more than notes on a scale. And, there are only a few composers that truly embrace, our heart and soul. I have a theory...these men and women are Angels on loan; God's way of letting us know, we are His beloved children and each note is a tap on our shoulder, with God saying, Be Loving And Good To One Another.

Celle qui m'a fait découvrir ce requiem, il y a plus de quarante ans; Je ne m'en lasse pas et je reviens toujours à cette magnifique version dirigée par le "grand" Michel Corboz! Ce requiem n'est au plus beau qu'avec des voix d'enfants. Les versions avec voix de femmes (à la place de celles des enfants) n'atteignent pas cette hauteur, c'est une certitude pour moi…
Le piae Jesu est la clé de voûte de l'ensemble. Le soliste y est fabuleux de simplicité. C'est Alain Clément, repris dans le texte ici comme baryton (c'est ce qu'il est actuellement) mais qui était à l'époque soprano.
Wonderful and deeply known interpretation of this perfectly composed requiem with heavenly voices from the excellent choir and wonderful voices from two brilliant soloists as well as well-combined and perfectly matched tones of all instruments. This Requiem is heard by God!

It is ironic that the well-known intense, tortured, and anxious views of death expressed in modern requiem settings, such as those by Mozart, Verdi, and Berlioz, does not seem to have been the norm prior to the late 17th century or so. If one looks at settings of the requiem service from the middle ages and the Renaissance, they are mournful but are more characterized by awe, restfulness, and hope rather than terror-this is even true of the much maligned Dies Irae, which tries to transform one's fear of judgement into hope in God's faithfulness and loving-kindness. So although Faure might have thought he was deviating from the norm, his requiem actually takes us back somewhat to the spirit of premodern requiems. De Vrouw met een boek in haar handen, het is een ICOON en dat betekent dat we in 500 jaar tijd een hele lange weg hebben afgelegd ... als iets normaal wordt, dan vergeten we hoe moeilijk de eerste stappen waren, het lijkt zo logisch allemaal en eigenlijk is het jammer dat we die stappen niet meer vieren - het boek in deze vorm is jonger dan we denken en een uitvinding van een jonge vrouw, die de heiligen een boek in handen gaf, zodat mensen het niet zouden verwerpen ... Belisa Barca (Isabella van Kleef) heeft zowel de boekdrukkunst als het gebonden boek ontworpen en het was een schot in de roos, maar dat kon zij niet weten. Tot aan het begin van de vorige eeuw waren er meer ongeletterde mensen, dan mensen, die konden lezen en nu zijn we al bezorgd als het leren lezen niet van een leien dakje loopt. Daarom moeten we de leerkracht centraal stellen en niet de les - we hebben allemaal het vermogen om te leren en dat betekent ook dat we niet in de bekende valkuilen moeten blijven stappen - je leert dat, wat je nodig hebt om je leven betekenisvol te maken. Het kleinste radertje brengt het grootste rad in beweging - ik las mijn kinderen voor en menig boekbesprekening is gemaakt op dat, wat ze zich herinnerden, want voor lezen hadden ze niet altijd de tijd. I fully share your preference, Corboz's creation is my favorite Requiem since I first heard it some forty years ago.

De Vrouw met een boek in haar handen, het is een ICOON en dat betekent dat we in 500 jaar tijd een hele lange weg hebben afgelegd ... als iets normaal wordt, dan vergeten we hoe moeilijk de eerste stappen waren, het lijkt zo logisch allemaal en eigenlijk is het jammer dat we die stappen niet meer vieren - het boek in deze vorm is jonger dan we denken en een uitvinding van een jonge vrouw, die de heiligen een boek in handen gaf, zodat mensen het niet zouden verwerpen ... Belisa Barca (Isabella van Kleef) heeft zowel de boekdrukkunst als het gebonden boek ontworpen en het was een schot in de roos, maar dat kon zij niet weten. Tot aan het begin van de vorige eeuw waren er meer ongeletterde mensen, dan mensen, die konden lezen en nu zijn we al bezorgd als het leren lezen niet van een leien dakje loopt. Daarom moeten we de leerkracht centraal stellen en niet de les - we hebben allemaal het vermogen om te leren en dat betekent ook dat we niet in de bekende valkuilen moeten blijven stappen - je leert dat, wat je nodig hebt om je leven betekenisvol te maken. Het kleinste radertje brengt het grootste rad in beweging - ik las mijn kinderen voor en menig boekbesprekening is gemaakt op dat, wat ze zich herinnerden, want voor lezen hadden ze niet altijd de tijd. Wat ik mooi vind is, dat ze nu wel hun eigen boeken lezen, want lezen is in dialoog gaan met je eigen brein en zo maakt het niet uit hoe lang je ermee wacht, we leren op vele manieren en hebben allemaal onze eigen voorkeuren - daar heeft niemand een oordeel over te vellen ... als de ka de leerkracht is, dan is de ba het boek en dat brengt me direct bij het probleem dat wij ontkennen - mensen zijn snobs als het erop aankomt en kunstenaars spelen met die gedachte, zolang we er ons maar beter door voelen en niet laten kisten voor onze tijd van gaan gekomen is!
