100 years, almost to the day, before the American election of 2024 -- the result of which motivated me to look for this clip. American democracy will be resurrected, but not before the MAGA movement dies.
Yesss! And that's why we performed the Fauré Requiem at Weimar Herz Jesu Church just on Monday, November 4th 2024 with two different choirs and lots of students from Musikhochschule Franz Liszt Weimar. 😍
Today I was fortunate to experience this mass in an actual mass held for the dead Nov 2, 2024. Vocals were amazing, the orchestra was comprised of musicians from the Detroit Symphony. This was not just a concert, an actual mass the way the pieces written were intended to be heard. This performance is amazing, it's just I know how rare it is to have appreciated compositions to be performed in the original mass setting (Latin Mass).
One of the best performances ever Gabriel Faure Requim Mass for the dead The soprano soloist is magnificent and beautiful The Rottersam Sinfonia is magnificent. Our Lord Jesus Christ is always with us and always will be there for you and ❤
To my opinion, Fauré wrote the most beautiful Requiem. The most peaceful, the most confident, the less thunderous (Verdi, Berlioz, Brahms ...) The sanctus envelops the listener, the believer, the afflicted one, in the veils of hope in a future life. No revolt, only peace. Despite Fauré was agnostic ...
Faure Requiem is pure genius. Such a beautiful performance by all. I fell in love with the Requiem a number of years ago when I had the honor to sing it as a member of my church's choir. It is my favorite piece.
I first sang this when I was a student at Princeton Theological Seminary under the direction of David Weadon in 1994. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. It never fails to give me this feeling. It is the most perfect requiem I’ve ever encountered, and I’ve sung a few.
So much has happened in the world these past 8 years and still I return to Faure and truly appreciate this exquisite performance by the Sinfonia Rotterdam. Laurenschatorij lead by Conrad van Alphen...heaven made and heaven sent. Merci merci mille fois.
How beautifully and sensitively each member performs this wonderful Requiem by Faure. Of course, the brilliant Director brings this sensitivity out in the performers.
I think Conrad is my new favorite interpreter of this work! Love the choices on tempo and the ability to shape each phrase beautifully. Bravo, Maestro!! (and bravi to all the performers as well!!) 🙌

Catholics, all over the world, including of course those living in the Neetherlands, are confident that this excellent concert, this wonderfull Requiem Mass is the sincere expression of true spirituality in the face of human death and consequently the most strong and vivid repulse of the laws of euthanasia in the Neetherlands. Spain is suffering now the most unspeakable pain along the course of the current pandemia, while silent deputies, are writting in the shadow and silently the new euthanasia disgraceful law, absolutely and frontally opposite to the natural law.
@ Luis profBove: Except this is not a liturgical or spiritual performance. There is no procession, no processional crosses, no acolytes, no incense, no priests, no Gospel reading, no Homily, no Communion, no High Altar or any of that. This is a superbly outstanding -- both Orchestra and Chorus -- secular concert hall performance. Some people seem to confuse the two just because the text of the piece is sacred or from the Requiem Mass setting. When I was in major Orchestra Choruses with performances in major concert halls, it didn't matter what Requiem Mass or oratorio we were performing, there was nothing sacred or at all spiritual about the performance, other than the text. None of the choristers blessed themselves before processing onto the stage because it was not a religious or even remotely spiritual occasion. And the audience knew that and applauded our secular performance, often with a standing ovation. Applause is inappropriate for a liturgical performance. You seem to be implying this is a liturgical performance and about spirituality. It is not. And it's not just (Roman or French) Catholics who use the Requiem Mass setting, Anglicans and Lutherans do as well.
I guess "natural law" means whatever suits you. Wouldn't be more "natural" living from what you hunt, renounce modern medicine and comforts and die (if you are lucky) in your forties? Euthanasia is not more unnatural than prolonging life when you are demented or seriously ill.
Fauré's music must be decoupled from any religious meaning because Fauré was agnostic. But despite everything, he signed there the most profoundly serene, the most completely confident in the face of death and finally, the most Christian of requiems.
God is truly greater than the greatest how I wish I can sing unto God with such a beautiful voice. God bless you all the writer, the conductor and the choir entirely I pray for more grace of God unto you
Simply marvelous. There are a lot of great Requiems, but this has always been my favorite, and the Agnus Dei in particular is one of the most beautiful ever written. Maestro van Alphen really respected Fauré's tempo markings, and just beautiful performances by soloists, chorus and orchestra. So glad I found this!
Long ago, in a college library, in the music section, I said the score for the Fauré Requiem seemed to be missing. The librarian (music major) went nuts looking for it. There's a big fan base for this work!
A great performance which I would like to hear as the last piece of music on my deathbed before my soul is released to make it’s journey to, hopefully, heaven where the angels reside, for a peaceful eternal repose.
I'll never forget hearing this requiem performed at the St. Thomas Church on 5th Ave. It was my first and only hearing of a live performance, and I'll never forget it.
This is an extraordinary piece. I remember listening to it many time, wheter during educational in music schools in Poland, being part of boy's choir or in other concerts. It contains everything and at the same time is very original, simple, surprising and before all - very M O D E R N I S T I C and has got some secrets inside, that could not be explained to me. I'm always deeply moved listening to this.
This is a great performance: excellent choir's, fantastic conduction, terrific orchestra, good conduction. Great cameras and sound. And to top it all up, I entertained my vision with the beautiful women in the choir as well as in the orchestra. These Dutch know how to do things well! Congratulations!
@ Sergio Contreras: "Excellent Choir's?" There was only one Chorus and that was Laurenscantorij Rotterdam. They are superb. They sing with perfect intonation and extremely clear diction. I suspect the women on stage -- both Orchestra and Chorus -- who don't think of themselves as beautiful will feel slighted by your comment. As well the men who are considered handsome. I looked at all of them, both women and men since they were all equally part of producing such a stellar performance. And Conrad van Alphen looked like he would be a pleasure to work with. The camera crew also did an excellent job.
Wunderbare Stimmen, wunderbares Orchester und wunderbare Tempi - eine großartige Aufführung dieses wahrhaft himmlischen Werkes! Ich durfte es auch einmal mitsingen, ich liebe es!!!! Danke, danke!!!!

The Requiem of Faure is very dear to my heart. The others I do particularly like is Verdi and Mozart. This does not mean I don't like the others Requiems. It is all a matter of choice. Having said that this orchestra, choir and conductor are excellent particularly since most of the Choir are so young and they all have such a glorious voice. Excellent performance!
G E W E L D I G!!! Een sublieme uitvoering. Ik heb thuis een uitvoering van een Frans orkest met Dieter Fischer Dieskau en Victoria de los Ángeles. Deze uitvoering is op dezelfde niveau.
A very impressive performance indeed! In my view, this is the go-to version on youtube at the moment (January 2021). Not only the performers are excellent, but also the acoustic and video engineering. (Yes, I could be picky about the soloists). It´s a pity that in late September, there are so many coughs and splutters from the audience.
Yes, I agree with other comments, ruined only by too much audience noise/coughing. Clicking and clacking sounds. Overall, the tempo was spot on, orchestra & conductor gave a great performance. I thought the soloists got it spot on. Still the best Reqium in my opinion.
