If he just met her once when she was eight and then got together when she is like 20 I'd have no problem with it, since sesshomaru would still be around 20 mentally, but dude raised her. Padme and Anakin isn’t the same. She was like 14 and had no feelings for Anakin. Anakin had a little crush on her. He was an adult when he met her again. She didn’t have feelings for him until they were spending time together in Naboo. She didn’t raise him or groom Anakin.
Also when they met is totally different. Inuyasha met Kagome as a teenager/almost adult. While Sesshomaru met Rin as a literal child. Inuyasha didnt raise Kagome but Sesshomaru pretty much did raise Rin. Thats the difference.
Kagome also had a family of her own, unlike rin, she had a support system to fall back on, inuyasha never tried to change that, or her belief on whether they cared more about her than him, which is, like, step one in groomer relationships, isolation. Inuyasha never tried to separate kagome from her family for his own gain, AND she was constantly surrounded by their friends even when she was away from them. Even then, she only saw him from a distance and they didn't make eye contact or even see each other's faces because he would always fly high above the village and drop Rin's present. my consensus is when the characters both meet and how they treat eachother. kagome and inuyasha both met and eventually both treated eachother like equals. sesshomaru and rin, it was like a parent child relationship, so that relationship in particular is bad in that. NOTE: this does not transition to all relationships, this is disregarding specifically age in terms of demon to human relationship i would assume. i do not support sesshomaru and rin being together. suck one of my balls if you do.
It wasn't a parent child relationship though. At least not one that wouldn't end up with a dead child. He did nothing for her except save her when she was in danger. For the record, I don't support the couple, but he was not a father to her.

Youve also forgotten to mentiom the power dynamics of their respective relationships prior to Yashahime. There was basically no point in time where Kagome couldn’t just unilaterally decide to stop interacting with Inuyasha On the otherhand, Sesshoumaru was largely in control of Rin's life pretty much from the moment they met.
Plus kagome literally had the power with that necklace, he couldn’t dominate her or anything like that. And I think it’s highly different since kagome is a teenager versus a small child
Inuyasha would have harassed her into interacting with him if she really did try to cut ties. He needed a jewel detector and Kikyo wasn't always helpful or "alive". I do think Sesshomaru and Rin is weird, but I don't consider it grooming. I think there has to be intent and plotting for that.
Sesshomaru didn't take Rin with him. He just didn't stop her from following him. Pretty sure that even before Sesshomaru started warming up to humanity, if Rin ever told him she wanted to try living with humans he'd beeline it to Inuyasha and tell him to take her to live with a human he trusts.

Like every time I was forced to remember that age gap and how they interacted in the original show I got the ick so hard I had to stop watching. I was super disappointed and the fact that it wasn’t monk and sangos kid, or like even shippo’s kids?? There were so many options but they somehow went for the worst one.

Yeah, Rumiko (the mangaka) has always referred to their relationship as platonic, with Sesshomaru being her paternal figure. I also remember an interview where she said that she considered Inuyasha to be a completed work, and Yashahime can be considered a "What If" scenario. I'm going with what the author says and ignoring it.

Uhh, there's a lot of discussion in the comments here on whether the author meant Sesshomaru and Rin to get together, and I had initially posted this as a reply to another comment. But I feel like this needs to be reiterated out here. I dont have a source but articles on her interviews usually summed up to - 1. Rumiko considers Inuyasha done after the final act and doesn't really see yashahime as legit in her mind (it was said diplomatically and in terms that wouldn't invalidate yashahime fans' love for the new show) - meaning all pairings at the end of the show are the only ones to actually get together. 2. On the matter of Sesshoumaru and Rin, she did not acknowledge them as a pairing and saw more of a guardian/ward relationship. They were meant to help each other get over their own issues and grow. For Sesshoumaru, it was getting over his dislike for humans, for Rin, it was getting a better life and leaving behind her abusive upbringing 3. She also made it clear that despite her own comments and thoughts, fans are free to interpret things as they like and enjoy her creation Lastly, my own interpretation of Sesshoumaru's mother's comment (about how he had Rin in his heart) was more along the sentiment of getting along with humans and genuinely caring for them like his father. You do not need to romanitcally think of friends and family to 'have them in your heart'. It was a thing to note as his mother probably did not see humans as equals, she doesn't seem to necessarily hate them but also doesn't think much of them. YES. I am glad someone else brought up Rumiko's comments. And I agree, I just cannot bring myself to watch the show knowing that they paired them together. Being found family who, as you said, helped heal one another was what made their relationship so meaningful. And /thank you/ for mentioning Sesshomaru's mother's comment because that is exactly how it came off to me as well. I don't understand why people can't believe that you can care deeply about someone and "have them in your heart" without it being romantic. He is her guardian and paternal figure, of course she is in his heart.

If she did, she would have used a different term when describing Sesshomaru other than "hogosha." Also, anyone who saw the original series and thought they were intended to be a couple has problems.

honestly, i’ve never liked the sesshomaru and rin pairing, it was always sesshomaru and kagura for me. i always viewed her as a little sister type looking up to kagome (as well as being paired with kohaku)

I know I might be alone with this (maybe) but for me this is kind of the equvalent of falling in love with your childhood best friend after 10-15 years when you are adults. The body, mind and personality develops over the years so it's possible that you see people different after like 10-15 years, because after those years you did NOT fall in love with the kid just because it's the same person. I was expecting the sequel to be dark. This is Sesshomaru and though he now has Bakusaiga, he still was set on his ambition to rule the west like his dad. Him being with Rin? I'm a bit 50/50 about that since he's pretty detached and just leaves her to her own devices or with Jaken except when he saves his charges and actually left her in the village after the final battle. Their relationship is like a Lord and his people. And I've watched several grooming animes disguised as romances which is honestly gross but Sesshomaru and Rin just confuses me. It's not grooming but power dynamics is definitely off the scale especially since Rin kind of worships him. Did I see the relationship coming? No. Sesshomaru is still ambitious and craved power though now he has a bit of empathy. If they were to pull something like that I expected Rin to be a lot older.

I agree with this whole heartedly. When I explain this to people they try to make the same argument that inuyahsa is way older than kagome. That may be true in retrospect but at the same time she’s from the future and they both have a mindset of 15 in the series and that is seen in inuyasha and kagome personality. What I hated about peopel shipping rin and Sesshomaru together was not only the age gap but the relationship that the two had. I know Sesshomaru wasn’t always president in runs life but he never told her to leave and saved her from death. She was never romantically attracted to him. She just wanted a family because hers had died/killed off. Jaken if anything is more of a father to rin. On top of this shipping charters like this is pediphilia. This is the same thing as taking deku from Mha and saying that he gets with eri which is putrid in every way. This is why I hated the consent of yashihime because because it added onto the this ship. It wasn’t even made by rumiko. She handed it off to someone else to write useing her charters. The only good thing that came out of that show was moroha.
I think the bigger issue is the general relationship beforehand. Inuyasha and Kagome were always equals, so it's acceptable for them to end up together. Sesshomaru and Rin on the other hand were guardian and child, so it's very strange for that to turn romantic at some point.
What they should have done was use Kaname from the game, her storyline was very interesting more than Kagome's. Not only that she had some type of spiritual power similar to Sesshomaru kids. If they wanted a human it could have been her, I just thought it was lazy work personally. Also, kagome did not meet Inuyasha as an eight-year-old, or travel with him for two years. They are mentally and physically 15. Sesshrin was a fan of work for people shipping it. She just didn't want to do a new character.
Sesshomaru revived Rin in the original series, and then like a dad with a cat he claimed he wanted *nothing* to do with, he learned to care for Rin & thereby humans. It’s messed up to have him in a sequel series make a child with his reluctantly-adopted pet girl. That shit is weird.
Idk i really like the dynamic of an inmortal being with the human they protected and in adulthood this human realizing that they love the inmortal one, and the inmortal one finally having someone to love back even when they know that their time is short. Its pure fiction and knowing to differentiate reality and fiction is important.

If The Sesshomaru/Rin romance storyline a must-do. I would take out Sesshomaru until Rin caught up to him mentally. Sesshomaru could be gaining power while traveling across the lands for 5-6 years. Then He returns, His military conquest is meaningless, because he has nothing really valuable to protect. After that He can realize that Inuyasha's family(Kagome and moroha) is something worth aspiring for. That way Both Rin and Sesshomaru could have developed to the point where their marrige feels organic. To me That sounds a little bit healthier relationship than what we got.

Then It a problem with the adaptation, not with the over all writing. Most Fans only know the animes and see Sesshomaru giving gifts to an underage girl and then getting her pregnant at the good old age of 17-18. It wasn't well developed enough to be a viable love story.
As said in the video, InuYasha and Kagome are the same age, they were both 15 in the beginning of the manga and anime so it's not the same. It's stated in the InuYasha Profiles book too
i agree it's bad for the fiction, but it wasn't particularly out of line for the time period. as fantastical as inuyasha is, it's very hard on things like politics and culture. a noble, as seshomaru sees himself, being older than his bride isn't unusual in feudal society.
My middle school friend married one of our school's admin. The admin was straight out of uni if I'm not mistaken, so he was 20ish while our cohort was 13-15 years old. They met again through mutual friends around 10 years after we finished middle school.

I'm confused, because in interviews, it's stated by Rumiko Takahashi that she choose adult Rin to be Sesshoumaru's wife - saying something like "she was always his heart" and they fell Romantically in love as adults - after many years of low contact, because Rin was being raised by granny Kaeda to learn how to live amougst humans again - so she could choose as an adult to stay in the human world or return to Sesshoumaru's side and live in the youkai world (Reference Inuyasha final Act episode 26), the studio wanted another woman to be Sesshoumaru's wife, but Rumiko choose adult Rin. After reading the base script, Rumiko herself drew character designs of Towa and Setsuna - even though they studio had hired some else to design them. Rumiko was busy with "Rin-ne" so after designing Towa and Setsuna she stepped back and just supervised an bit. Rumiko has even stated in interviews that Kagura had an "unrequited love" for Sesshoumaru. Me, personally never saw the appeal, nor potential of Sesshoumaru/Kagura (even after final act - she just seemed to bit$hy to me) , but Sesshoumaru/Rin to me personally had an more big bro/little sis vibe - given their ages (8/9? Rin's real age in Inuyasha was never stated by Rumiko) and 19 year old with anger issues and daddy issues of his own. That's opinion having siblings myself.

2 problems with this 1) if we’re considering diferentes races, it may not be an issue for them. 2) if we’re saying “mental age” is important, a 14-15yrs Inuyasha was originally groomed, and later gaslighted, by a 17-18yrs Kykio (being 1year younger than Sesshomaru) And the show paints them as tragic lovers, only condemning Kykio for wrongfully blaming Inuyasha for her death. I don’t think an “age gap” & “grooming” is the root problem, because they’re are many people still ship Inuyasha with Kykio. I think the root reason is because Rin felt like her age; 8yrs old. Grooming/ped0 is wrong, I just noticed that people are okay with teenagers entering deep romantic relationships as long as there’s chemistry & the teen has frequent moments of maturity. (Which is why many don’t care about Kykio despite her being in a position of authority & being older than Inuyasha). Rin is explicitly, unquestionably, and unforgettably a child. Far from 18yrs old, let alone 15yrs. Inuyasha & Kykio are closer to 18yrs, at most a 3yr age gap, so people turn a blind eye. So what is really being said “we cannot justify the relationship because it is painfully obvious that Rin was younger & more innocent than the rest of the cast, therefore being unjustifiable” Sidenote: Sess & Rin could just have an unhealthy codependency. I could only understand and explain it like dungeon meshi explanation, where 13yo halfling is already an adult, bc they are short living race, while some elves or dwarves at that age are only little kids, bc they are long living races. So if character is of long living race and clearly on the same development level as character of short living race it's prob ok? But understandable, if one that of long living takes too long to mature, we have reverse problem...
Makes sense for the species. A human's life is pretty insignificant to that of a demon(hengeyokai). 8-80 is a pretty insignificant difference. Not saying it's okay, but we are also judging it from a human standpoint. But from a human standpoint, it's 100% sexual grooming, albeit with no intention. Might explain why demons don't mix with humans much. Might be basically grooming & pedophilia no matter how old the human is, as kiade going from a kid to the oldest person in the village wasn't even equivalent to a year for a half demon. Inuyasha is basically still a kid in Yashahime, while Kagome has fully matured as the adult in the relationship. These long-lived species can gain such an intellectual advantage without the maturity, even the maturist of humans are like little child. I think from Seshomaru's perspective, they're all the same. Exception is the only human he ever felt affection for, which knowing his story and his family's story, assuming its romantic love is the only realistic conclusion for him to make. It doesn't make the show bad, it makes it realistic. Ultimately, Seshomaru accidently groomed a child, and made children with her as an adult. This is not okay, but as a character perspective. Seshomaru is also too ignorant and uncaring about human culture to ever care. Would love to see his daughter's reaction and shock to discovering how she was conceived, especially being from a much more modern version of Japan. Seshomaru at 0 emotional intelligence, and her at high trying to explain the problem, while he both trying to console her and not caring about the actual concept, would make one interesting scene. Regardless, yashahime is amazing, and feels like a perfect continuation. Either don't think about this too much, or realize it's an accurate reflection of who Seshomaru is as a person.
The odd part about demons in this show is they seem to get to puberty, then age extremely slow and likely vary aton in how fast they age so its likely common among demons to share extreme age gaps in relationships since Sesshomaru is 500+ years old everyone likely feels extremely young minded to him .
Tbh I think 14-year-old me would’ve been so excited but 28-year-old me is so distraught. It’s like how we used to think twilight was the coolest thing in the world until we got older and realized how toxic and problematic that relationship was. And I know this is feudal times and marriage had a different connotation back then . . . but what do they even talk about?
There’s a lot of anime like this that came out in the 90s: Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, Fuushigi Yuugi, Bastard, etc… that show tons of grooming and very young children eventually ending up lovers with a much older person which is not great. As a kid I thought nothing of it but after rewatching as an adult I found it disturbing so I agree with you on Rin and Sesshomaru.
Jacken is the father figure to Rin and sesshomaru more like a protector. Through the manga as well as the anime sesshomaru considered Rin as someone valuable so yeah their relationship turned to be like inuyasha and Kagome since Rin offered help to sesshomaru when he was injured so in return his morals obligated him to keep her safe .Plus she only accompanied both of Jacken and sesshomaru for less than a year which is the exact time of inuyasha and Kagome journey , after that Rin started to live in a human village. P.S. the yashahime manga makes sense following Rin growing up from a childhood phase to maturity ❤

I was 6 or 7 when I first watched Inuyasha as a kid with my older brother. Sesshomaru was my favourite bc he was so pretty. As a 20 something year old woman I laughed when Yashahime came out.
If I met them at 8 and didn't have anything resembling a relationship with them for the better part of at least 12 years years then maybe if we connected as adults. There was this one lady that I was talking to about it and my main point was exactly this, the fact that he takes her in and shows basically NO inclination other than her protector in the original show. The chances of Rin realistically seeing Sesshomaru in a romantic light just because she grew older are LOW. Let alone Sesshomaru seeing her as anything other than a child. Her response was “Well she doesn’t see him as a father figure!!! Never did!!!!! Have a nice day!!!!!!” As if she could say on behalf of this FICTIONAL character who, even if that was true, isn’t the point. That logic only makes it worse 🙄
Agreed. I always saw Rin and Sesshomaru as like faughter-adopted daughter so Yashahime was awkward. Like, no matter how much they "aged up" Rin in the sequel I couldn't still not see her as that little girl (especially since I just finished rewatching Inuyasha when Yashahime was announced).

Honestly my first time watching the anime. I always thought Sesshomaru and Rin would end up together though. Even when I got older and re-watched the show again. There were two episodes specifically that I figured this from. Together forever with Lord Sesshomaru was a prime example. They traveled less than a year together and he left her with Kaede to make her own choices and visit to make sure she was adjusting well there.
To me this actually is a huge part of why demon and humans shouldn't be in long term romantic relationships in the Inuyasha world. Inuyasha needed 150 years to reach a mental age of 15 - and he's clearly mentally and physically aging considerably faster than Sesshomaru if we consider the 'Swords of an honorable ruler' movie canon (since it shows Sesshomaru to be AT LEAST a teenager in demon years when Inuyasha was born - which means that Sesshomaru went from teenager to slightly older teenager in the time Inuyasha went from new born to high schooler). Basically, Inuyasha won't even grow past demon young adulthood during Kagome's whole lifespan. They're relationship was fine when they were both mentally 15, but at one point Kagome will be a lady in her early 60s still married to someone who's mentally and physically in their late teens - which sounds both gross and incredibly annoying. It would be even worse for Sesshomaru and Rin, since he ages even slower than that - I could maaaaybe see their feelings for each other getting ambiguous during the brief time of her life in which they're the same age, but then he'll be mentally 20 literally for the rest of her life, and I can't see any romantic relationship between the two of them evolving in a good direction. I'd be actually interested in seeing Rin going from Sesshomaru's daughter to his sister to a sort of motherly figure in his life (kami knows Sesshomaru would benefit from an adult parental figure who could actually teach him to handle emotions) as she gradually becomes mentally and physically older then him.
Its not grooming. He left her in Kaede's village as a child so she could grow up around humans and live a normal life. She meets him again at 18 and they talk, spend personal quality time, and it forms an adult relationship when they are both adults. My only advice to anyone is READ THE MANGA. He may have met her when she was a child but they fell in love as consenting adults 10 years later. Its like someone knowing their brothers friend as a child and then they dont see each other for years and then as adults get together. It is not that weird. But again... READ THE MANGA..
i have read the yashahime manga, and there in the first part they explain rin and his relationship is when she is sitting by him as a child eating food and a box shows him saying "and he found human love" the wording and placement is wayyy out of there, and in the case she had the twins at 18 (which its said she did) we see yes development, but not all at the ages of 18. non the less her being 8 when they met is messed up, and the factor of this is the feudal era yes, but morality wise yashahime was made in 2021, recent modern ages, not even Rumiko in the 2000's made things like that

I'm confused, because in interviews, it's stated by Rumiko Takahashi that she choose adult Rin to be Sesshoumaru's wife - saying something like "she was always his heart" and they fell Romantically in love as adults - after many years of low contact, because Rin was being raised by granny Kaeda to learn how to live amougst humans again - so she could choose as an adult to stay in the human world or return to Sesshoumaru's side and live in the youkai world (Reference Inuyasha final Act episode 26), the studio wanted another woman to be Sesshoumaru's wife, but Rumiko choose adult Rin. After reading the base script, Rumiko herself drew character designs of Towa and Setsuna - even though they studio had hired some else to design them. Rumiko was busy with "Rin-ne" so after designing Towa and Setsuna she stepped back and just supervised an bit. Rumiko has even stated in interviews that Kagura had an "unrequited love" for Sesshoumaru. Me, personally never saw the appeal, nor potential of Sesshoumaru/Kagura (even after final act - she just seemed to bit$hy to me) , but Sesshoumaru/Rin to me personally had an more big bro/little sis vibe - given their ages (8/9? Rin's real age in Inuyasha was never stated by Rumiko) and 19 year old with anger issues and daddy issues of his own. That's opinion having siblings myself.

I disagree it was always set up from basically the beginning that rin loved sesshomaru they started being more heavy about it towards the end too. Watch the episode with the monks and the flute playing demon they try to get rin to leave sesshomaru but she wouldn't that whole episode is about her love and wanting to be with sesshomaru even asking him if he would remember her after she died. It's weird and I get that cause of the age difference but rin help sesshomaru soften his heart (one of the goals of his father to btw which is why he gave him tensaiga) and sesshomaru helped rin to he protected her genuinely loved her so much so even his mom brought her back again to life; as well as eventually leaving her with keade and humans which she did not like humans and feared them. I usually make exceptions, though, if the child character grows up to be the one doing the pursuing. I find that this dynamic usually absolves the power gap. For some examples, in MXTX's Scum Villain and Heaven Official's blessing, the romance doesn't start until after a significant time skip and when the once child characters grow to become powerful overlords, both having one sided crushes for the longest time and the older characters being completely oblivious/uninterested before hand.

Did he ever say he loved her as a child? Or in any capacity for that matter? All he ever does is save her from danger. That is definitely how he shows his love, but it doesn't show what kind of love. Again, he doesn't even talk to her unless absolutely necessary. He and Jakken have more of a relationship.

Also when they met is totally different. Inuyasha met Kagome as a teenager/almost adult. While Sesshomaru met Rin as a literal child. Inuyasha didnt raise Kagome but Sesshomaru pretty much did raise Rin. Thats the difference.
Kagome also had a family of her own, unlike rin, she had a support system to fall back on, inuyasha never tried to change that, or her belief on whether they cared more about her than him, which is, like, step one in groomer relationships, isolation. Inuyasha never tried to separate kagome from her family for his own gain, AND she was constantly surrounded by their friends even when she was away from them. The guy would’ve never had an opportunity to “groom” her to his advantage

Even then, she only saw him from a distance and they didn't make eye contact or even see each other's faces because he would always fly high above the village and drop Rin's present. He never even said anything back when Rin would yell out a greeting.

my consensus is when the characters both meet and how they treat eachother. kagome and inuyasha both met and eventually both treated eachother like equals. sesshomaru and rin, it was like a parent child relationship, so that relationship in particular is bad in that.

There was basically no point in time where Kagome couldn’t just unilaterally decide to stop interacting with Inuyasha
On the otherhand, Sesshoumaru was largely in control of Rin's life pretty much from the moment they met.
Plus kagome literally had the power with that necklace, he couldn’t dominate her or anything like that. And I think it’s highly different since kagome is a teenager versus a small child
Inuyasha would have harassed her into interacting with him if she really did try to cut ties. He needed a jewel detector and Kikyo wasn't always helpful or "alive".
I do think Sesshomaru and Rin is weird, but I don't consider it grooming. I think there has to be intent and plotting for that.
Sesshomaru didn't take Rin with him. He just didn't stop her from following him. Pretty sure that even before Sesshomaru started warming up to humanity, if Rin ever told him she wanted to try living with humans he'd beeline it to Inuyasha and tell him to take her to live with a human he trusts.

Yeah, Rumiko (the mangaka) has always referred to their relationship as platonic, with Sesshomaru being her paternal figure. I also remember an interview where she said that she considered Inuyasha to be a completed work, and Yashahime can be considered a "What If" scenario. I'm going with what the author says and ignoring it.

Uhh, there's a lot of discussion in the comments here on whether the author meant Sesshomaru and Rin to get together, and I had initially posted this as a reply to another comment. But I feel like this needs to be reiterated out here.
I dont have a source but articles on her interviews usually summed up to -
1. Rumiko considers Inuyasha done after the final act and doesn't really see yashahime as legit in her mind (it was said diplomatically and in terms that wouldn't invalidate yashahime fans' love for the new show) - meaning all pairings at the end of the show are the only ones to actually get together.
2. On the matter of Sesshoumaru and Rin, she did not acknowledge them as a pairing and saw more of a guardian/ward relationship. They were meant to help each other get over their own issues and grow. For Sesshoumaru, it was getting over his dislike for humans, for Rin, it was getting a better life and leaving behind her abusive upbringing
3. She also made it clear that despite her own comments and thoughts, fans are free to interpret things as they like and enjoy her creation
Lastly, my own interpretation of Sesshoumaru's mother's comment (about how he had Rin in his heart) was more along the sentiment of getting along with humans and genuinely caring for them like his father. You do not need to romanitcally think of friends and family to 'have them in your heart'. It was a thing to note as his mother probably did not see humans as equals, she doesn't seem to necessarily hate them but also doesn't think much of them. That's basically why she made the comment on how he was more like his father now.
The reason why there is so much discussion on this topic is because of how close this series was to all our hearts and overall, I feel like making it explicit on who Sesshomaru's partner was a mistake. They could have very well gone on without making it clear that it was Rin. Leaving it open-ended would have satisfied both the shippers and anti-shippers. And personally, I would have actually tried to watch the show then. Just knowing that they paired these two together ruined the whole thing for me.
YES. I am glad someone else brought up Rumiko's comments. And I agree, I just cannot bring myself to watch the show knowing that they paired them together. Being found family who, as you said, helped heal one another was what made their relationship so meaningful.
And /thank you/ for mentioning Sesshomaru's mother's comment because that is exactly how it came off to me as well. I don't understand why people can't believe that you can care deeply about someone and "have them in your heart" without it being romantic. He is her guardian and paternal figure, of course she is in his heart.
@VK_EL Thanks for bringing up Rumiko Takahashi's stance on their relationship. I've seen so many people say that Rumiko made them a couple when she never intended it to be that way. If she did, she would have used a different term when describing Sesshomaru other than "hogosha." Also, anyone who saw the original series and thought they were intended to be a couple has problems.

This is exactly how I felt too. What would have been a great idea for a series is if Sesshoumaru himself got the spin off instead. I always loved his little found family dynamic with his two human kids and Jaken.

I know I might be alone with this (maybe) but for me this is kind of the equvalent of falling in love with your childhood best friend after 10-15 years when you are adults. The body, mind and personality develops over the years so it's possible that you see people different after like 10-15 years, because after those years you did NOT fall in love with the kid just because it's the same person.

I was expecting the sequel to be dark. This is Sesshomaru and though he now has Bakusaiga, he still was set on his ambition to rule the west like his dad. Him being with Rin? I'm a bit 50/50 about that since he's pretty detached and just leaves her to her own devices or with Jaken except when he saves his charges and actually left her in the village after the final battle. Their relationship is like a Lord and his people. And I've watched several grooming animes disguised as romances which is honestly gross but Sesshomaru and Rin just confuses me. It's not grooming but power dynamics is definitely off the scale especially since Rin kind of worships him. Did I see the relationship coming? No. Sesshomaru is still ambitious and craved power though now he has a bit of empathy. If they were to pull something like that I expected Rin to be a lot older.

I agree with this whole heartedly. When I explain this to people they try to make the same argument that inuyahsa is way older than kagome. That may be true in retrospect but at the same time she’s from the future and they both have a mindset of 15 in the series and that is seen in inuyasha and kagome personality. What I hated about peopel shipping rin and Sesshomaru together was not only the age gap but the relationship that the two had. I know Sesshomaru wasn’t always president in runs life but he never told her to leave and saved her from death. She was never romantically attracted to him. She just wanted a family because hers had died/killed off. Jaken if anything is more of a father to rin. On top of this shipping charters like this is pediphilia. This is the same thing as taking deku from Mha and saying that he gets with eri which is putrid in every way. This is why I hated the consent of yashihime because because it added onto the this ship. It wasn’t even made by rumiko. She handed it off to someone else to write useing her charters. The only good thing that came out of that show was moroha.

I think the bigger issue is the general relationship beforehand. Inuyasha and Kagome were always equals, so it's acceptable for them to end up together. Sesshomaru and Rin on the other hand were guardian and child, so it's very strange for that to turn romantic at some point.

What they should have done was use Kaname from the game, her storyline was very interesting more than Kagome's. Not only that she had some type of spiritual power similar to Sesshomaru kids. If they wanted a human it could have been her, I just thought it was lazy work personally. Also, kagome did not meet Inuyasha as an eight-year-old, or travel with him for two years. They are mentally and physically 15.

Sesshomaru revived Rin in the original series, and then like a dad with a cat he claimed he wanted *nothing* to do with, he learned to care for Rin & thereby humans. It’s messed up to have him in a sequel series make a child with his reluctantly-adopted pet girl. That shit is weird.

Idk i really like the dynamic of an inmortal being with the human they protected and in adulthood this human realizing that they love the inmortal one, and the inmortal one finally having someone to love back even when they know that their time is short. Its pure fiction and knowing to differentiate reality and fiction is important.

I hated this idea too! It just didn’t sit right, especially since Rin looked to him as a protector as a child who’d lost everything. If they had met when they were both mature it would’ve been different. I got so much hate from people trying to defend this ship
If The Sesshomaru/Rin romance storyline a must-do. I would take out Sesshomaru until Rin caught up to him mentally. Sesshomaru could be gaining power while traveling across the lands for 5-6 years. Then He returns, His military conquest is meaningless, because he has nothing really valuable to protect.
After that He can realize that Inuyasha's family(Kagome and moroha) is something worth aspiring for.
That way Both Rin and Sesshomaru could have developed to the point where their marrige feels organic.
To me That sounds a little bit healthier relationship than what we got.

Especially when Sesshomaru dropping gifts for her sometimes. That is why the end result feels like grooming to me and others. Or It's just the fact that Rin never felt like someone with true autonomy, besides the fact that She was self sufficient at 11 years old.
Then It a problem with the adaptation, not with the over all writing. Most Fans only know the animes and see Sesshomaru giving gifts to an underage girl and then getting her pregnant at the good old age of 17-18. It wasn't well developed enough to be a viable love story.

i agree it's bad for the fiction, but it wasn't particularly out of line for the time period. as fantastical as inuyasha is, it's very hard on things like politics and culture. a noble, as seshomaru sees himself, being older than his bride isn't unusual in feudal society.

After reading the base script, Rumiko herself drew character designs of Towa and Setsuna - even though they studio had hired some else to design them. Rumiko was busy with "Rin-ne" so after designing Towa and Setsuna she stepped back and just supervised an bit. Rumiko has even stated in interviews that Kagura had an "unrequited love" for Sesshoumaru. Me, personally never saw the appeal, nor potential of Sesshoumaru/Kagura (even after final act - she just seemed to bit$hy to me) , but Sesshoumaru/Rin to me personally had an more big bro/little sis vibe - given their ages (8/9? Rin's real age in Inuyasha was never stated by Rumiko) and 19 year old with anger issues and daddy issues of his own. That's opinion having siblings myself.

I dont have a source but articles on her interviews usually summed up to -
1. Rumiko considers Inuyasha done after the final act and doesn't really see yashahime as legit in her mind (it was said diplomatically and in terms that wouldn't invalidate yashahime fans' love for the new show) - meaning all pairings at the end of the show are the only ones to actually get together.
2. On the matter of Sesshoumaru and Rin, she did not acknowledge them as a pairing, and saw more of a guardian/ward relationship. They were ment to help each other get over their own issues and grow. For Sesshoumaru it was getting over his dislike for humans, for Rin, it was getting a better life and leaving behind her abusive upbringing
3. She also made it clear that despite her own comments and thoughts, fans are free to interpret things as they like and enjoy her creation
Lastly, my own interpretation of Sesshoumaru's mother's comment was more along the sentiment of getting along with humans and genuinely caring for them like his father. You do not need to romanitcally think of close friends and family to 'have them in your heart'. It was a thing to note as his mother probably did not see humans as equals, she doesn't seem to necessarily hate them but also doesn't think much of them. Thats basically why she made the comment on how he was more like his father now.
2 problems with this
1) if we’re considering diferentes races, it may not be an issue for them.
2) if we’re saying “mental age” is important, a 14-15yrs Inuyasha was originally groomed, and later gaslighted, by a 17-18yrs Kykio (being 1year younger than Sesshomaru)
And the show paints them as tragic lovers, only condemning Kykio for wrongfully blaming Inuyasha for her death.
I don’t think an “age gap” & “grooming” is the root problem, because they’re are many people still ship Inuyasha with Kykio.
I think the root reason is because Rin felt like her age; 8yrs old.
Grooming/ped0 is wrong, I just noticed that people are okay with teenagers entering deep romantic relationships as long as there’s chemistry & the teen has frequent moments of maturity. (Which is why many don’t care about Kykio despite her being in a position of authority & being older than Inuyasha).
Rin is explicitly, unquestionably, and unforgettably a child. Far from 18yrs old, let alone 15yrs.
Inuyasha & Kykio are closer to 18yrs, at most a 3yr age gap, so people turn a blind eye.
So what is really being said “we cannot justify the relationship because it is painfully obvious that Rin was younger & more innocent than the rest of the cast, therefore being unjustifiable”

Makes sense for the species. A human's life is pretty insignificant to that of a demon(hengeyokai). 8-80 is a pretty insignificant difference. Not saying it's okay, but we are also judging it from a human standpoint. But from a human standpoint, it's 100% sexual grooming, albeit with no intention.
Might explain why demons don't mix with humans much. Might be basically grooming & pedophilia no matter how old the human is, as kiade going from a kid to the oldest person in the village wasn't even equivalent to a year for a half demon. Inuyasha is basically still a kid in Yashahime, while Kagome has fully matured as the adult in the relationship.
These long-lived species can gain such an intellectual advantage without the maturity, even the maturist of humans are like little child. I think from Seshomaru's perspective, they're all the same. Exception is the only human he ever felt affection for, which knowing his story and his family's story, assuming its romantic love is the only realistic conclusion for him to make.
It doesn't make the show bad, it makes it realistic. Ultimately, Seshomaru accidently groomed a child, and made children with her as an adult. This is not okay, but as a character perspective. Seshomaru is also too ignorant and uncaring about human culture to ever care.
Would love to see his daughter's reaction and shock to discovering how she was conceived, especially being from a much more modern version of Japan. Seshomaru at 0 emotional intelligence, and her at high trying to explain the problem, while he both trying to console her and not caring about the actual concept, would make one interesting scene.
Regardless, yashahime is amazing, and feels like a perfect continuation. Either don't think about this too much, or realize it's an accurate reflection of who Seshomaru is as a person.

The odd part about demons in this show is they seem to get to puberty, then age extremely slow and likely vary aton in how fast they age so its likely common among demons to share extreme age gaps in relationships since Sesshomaru is 500+ years old everyone likely feels extremely young minded to him .

There’s a lot of anime like this that came out in the 90s: Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, Fuushigi Yuugi, Bastard, etc… that show tons of grooming and very young children eventually ending up lovers with a much older person which is not great. As a kid I thought nothing of it but after rewatching as an adult I found it disturbing so I agree with you on Rin and Sesshomaru.
Jacken is the father figure to Rin and sesshomaru more like a protector. Through the manga as well as the anime sesshomaru considered Rin as someone valuable so yeah their relationship turned to be like inuyasha and Kagome since Rin offered help to sesshomaru when he was injured so in return his morals obligated him to keep her safe .Plus she only accompanied both of Jacken and sesshomaru for less than a year which is the exact time of inuyasha and Kagome journey , after that Rin started to live in a human village. P.S. the yashahime manga makes sense following Rin growing up from a childhood phase to maturity ❤

In feudal Japan, age did not matter when it came to marriage. If a girl is between the ages of 16 to 25, she can be married to a man of any legal age. Sesshomaru was of legal age to court and marry her if he wished

I was 6 or 7 when I first watched Inuyasha as a kid with my older brother. Sesshomaru was my favourite bc he was so pretty. As a 20 something year old woman I laughed when Yashahime came out.

Honestly my first time watching the anime. I always thought Sesshomaru and Rin would end up together though. Even when I got older and re-watched the show again.
There were two episodes specifically that I figured this from. Together forever with Lord Sesshomaru was a prime example.
They traveled less than a year together and he left her with Kaede to make her own choices and visit to make sure she was adjusting well there.
To me this actually is a huge part of why demon and humans shouldn't be in long term romantic relationships in the Inuyasha world.
Inuyasha needed 150 years to reach a mental age of 15 - and he's clearly mentally and physically aging considerably faster than Sesshomaru if we consider the 'Swords of an honorable ruler' movie canon (since it shows Sesshomaru to be AT LEAST a teenager in demon years when Inuyasha was born - which means that Sesshomaru went from teenager to slightly older teenager in the time Inuyasha went from new born to high schooler).
Basically, Inuyasha won't even grow past demon young adulthood during Kagome's whole lifespan. They're relationship was fine when they were both mentally 15, but at one point Kagome will be a lady in her early 60s still married to someone who's mentally and physically in their late teens - which sounds both gross and incredibly annoying.
It would be even worse for Sesshomaru and Rin, since he ages even slower than that - I could maaaaybe see their feelings for each other getting ambiguous during the brief time of her life in which they're the same age, but then he'll be mentally 20 literally for the rest of her life, and I can't see any romantic relationship between the two of them evolving in a good direction.
I'd be actually interested in seeing Rin going from Sesshomaru's daughter to his sister to a sort of motherly figure in his life (kami knows Sesshomaru would benefit from an adult parental figure who could actually teach him to handle emotions) as she gradually becomes mentally and physically older then him.

Its not grooming. He left her in Kaede's village as a child so she could grow up around humans and live a normal life. She meets him again at 18 and they talk, spend personal quality time, and it forms an adult relationship when they are both adults. My only advice to anyone is READ THE MANGA. He may have met her when she was a child but they fell in love as consenting adults 10 years later. Its like someone knowing their brothers friend as a child and then they dont see each other for years and then as adults get together. It is not that weird. But again... READ THE MANGA..
i have read the yashahime manga, and there in the first part they explain rin and his relationship is when she is sitting by him as a child eating food and a box shows him saying "and he found human love" the wording and placement is wayyy out of there, and in the case she had the twins at 18 (which its said she did) we see yes development, but not all at the ages of 18. non the less her being 8 when they met is messed up, and the factor of this is the feudal era yes, but morality wise yashahime was made in 2021, recent modern ages, not even Rumiko in the 2000's made things like that

I disagree it was always set up from basically the beginning that rin loved sesshomaru they started being more heavy about it towards the end too. Watch the episode with the monks and the flute playing demon they try to get rin to leave sesshomaru but she wouldn't that whole episode is about her love and wanting to be with sesshomaru even asking him if he would remember her after she died. It's weird and I get that cause of the age difference but rin help sesshomaru soften his heart (one of the goals of his father to btw which is why he gave him tensaiga) and sesshomaru helped rin to he protected her genuinely loved her so much so even his mom brought her back again to life; as well as eventually leaving her with keade and humans which she did not like humans and feared them. He then left her there permanently letting her grow without him and she still ended up having his twins. But that's just like my opinion man

I usually make exceptions, though, if the child character grows up to be the one doing the pursuing. I find that this dynamic usually absolves the power gap.
For some examples, in MXTX's Scum Villain and Heaven Official's blessing, the romance doesn't start until after a significant time skip and when the once child characters grow to become powerful overlords, both having one sided crushes for the longest time and the older characters being completely oblivious/uninterested before hand.
Also didn't Inuyasha sleep through a big chunk of his life? Still a Little crazy that he's over 150 and still have the mind of a 15 year old. Meanwhile other series have immortal little girls with the mind of a grown woman.😂
