Hi. I make moose hide sheaths. (With the hair on). Since you're looking for ideas to get rid of the pvc one, I'd definitely use moose, or deer. Something with short hair. I also incorporate the Dew claws and hoofs for an incredible look.
Rit dye synthetic works great on that PVC, ive been using the same 4" water pipe PVC for sheaths for years. They have a page on their website that gives you the formula to mix their dyes to make any color you can imagine.
I have been using pvc, polypropylene and polyethylene for sheaths for years. You can die the pvc, but i usually end up covering them in leather, using a spray adhesive like 3M or CRC or gorilla glue for plastics to adhere the leather.
I put a third of the handle in the sheath, I form the PVC around the handle and it creates good retention. Looks pretty cool too. That belt loop on yours will be cut off quickly. I form a belt clip from the PVC, it’s all one piece on mine.
I use RIT dye to change the color of surplus molle pouches. It dyes the plastic buckles fairly well. Use the dye meant for synthetic materials and add vinegar. Plenty of videos out there showing the process. Cool project!
LOL. So self cleaning isn't like little maids come out and go to town. It heats up to like 800 degrees and basically works like an incinerator that cremates bodies. I just learned about this a couple of years ago.
Yes and its good to know ITS a Bad ideea to Open IT when that hot...so they build a system that keeps the Door Close. If you try to burn Clay or Else Keep in mind the Door is shut a Long Time. I dont Talk from knowledge i gained because i burned leftovers...Trust me ;-) Greatz from Germany and have a nice Day opo
I do just the oposite side for the blade in the sheath. Like this, you have always the cutting side facing the side where there is not the rivets. I do this nearly all the time. And if i have not the rivets, i use some fine rope 2 or 3 mm thick, who can do also the buckle.
To color the PVC try vinyl dye. Can be found at auto parts suppliers in rattle cans and as liquid for brush or spray. Either can be thinned with MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone, the solvent in PVC primer & cement) and you could probably find suitable colorants to make your own.
After reading comments:: adding a pvc loop onto the sheath for a belt or dangler with rivets would be pretty simple after initial forming.. cut the open side of the pvc to get rivet tool inside.
That self cleaning oven feature is a good way to destroy your digital oven circuit board. At least that's what I was told by the last appliance repair guy. The circuit boards are designed to fail at ultra high temps, according to him. And that's exactly what happened to our last oven. New circuit board was almost as much as a new oven.
Enjoyed your video. Its been about 10 years since I've worked with PVC . Some suggestions..... use Chicago screws to hold the project until you're ready for the final project assembly. Where the knife enters the sheath, Make a small roll in the PVC, even if its just fold to help guide the blade in. Not so large as to funnel water or mud in. Rustoleum plastic paint works really well. Just scuff Lightly to give it some tooth for adhesive. Made a water resistant case for a 10-22 many years ago for mounting to bikes (Any type) and the small carts we drive around the back properties. It works great. Ugly, Banged up a bit, and we have to put a water resistant bag to cover the top sometimes to keep the dust and dirt out, but the kids and grandkids strap it on when they head out. Looks like a fat porcupine butt with all the fishing poles and stuff ss the bikes are riding away.
Nice video, thanks for showing. A 'self-cleaning' oven is coated inside with a catalyzer, so all residue desintegrates - hopefully the unhealthy fumes from the heated PVC will be too! I use PVC-piping for my sheaths too, but use a heat-gun - with some leather winter-gloves you can do detailed work (e.g. thumb-rests, indents for tensioning). I live in northern Germany and here different colours are available, e.g. copper and anthracite with golden glitters (my current favorite) for drainpipes. On painted pipes the paint wears down quickly. I like the rectangular shape too, because you can wrap it easily in different types of cordage without having them sliding down a tapered sheath. Your pipe is a sewer pipe, my drainpipes come in 3"/7.5cm Ø too, that would be less excess material. There is no way to stain PVC - get coloured drainpipe. The rivets don't look very pretty - as you made a whole bunch of machetes, I suggest making 'headmakers', simply two pieces of thick steel with spherical indents to form rounded flatheads on both sides (squeeze in a vice with a drop of oil in the indents). As they will rust, I remove the nail-stumps from the rivets before pressing/hammering. Aside from the sheath colour there are two things I don't like with your design, a) no lanyard-hole in the handle (and the tang), b) your belt-loop attachment, being in the way of the (razor-sharp) edge - make the side towards the body a little longer and bend it around the handle, then you can rivet the belt loop to it - reduces the danger of stabbing yourself too. Much success in selling your machetes.
I have just used some khaki krylon spray paint on my PVC sheaths. Jason. I would recommend placing some aluminum foil under the PVC when it's in your oven. Also, run your stovetop exhaust fan for the fumes the heating releases.
Hey Jason, we watched in awe on your performances. Hubby says he will swap with you on your sheath & that fatwood ferro rod for one of his knife & sheath. Dwell on it mate. Cheers from Australia.
Great video! Love all the DIY stuff and I would use Pecan or Walnut hulls (boiled) to dye the sheath! Make a strong boiled batch and try it on a small corner to test it!
Ive been using scheduke 40 pvc for uears as sheaths. I teach kali and its great for training cause it hurts but doest break or cut. The pvc is durable. It makes a decent fire starter if you scrape it.
Gel stain for fiberglass doors might work also. Great video and good on ya for selling them to those that don’t have time or know how to do it. Great job
I'm more of an angled handle forward crossdraw for bowies and machetes. No worries about cutting the hanger. To many years of experience using and carrying big blades. What steel are you using ? Also, maybe think about using Cactus juice wood stabilizer in a vacuum pot. Might add 20 bucks to total cost, but you wont have volatile linseed oil and used rags around. Pain in the backside when those rags spontaneously combust.
I repurposed the leather out of an old pair of work boots for a knife sheath, turned out pretty crappy the first time but second try was much, much better!! Love the custom machete video's. Stay safe and stay aware out there!!
When you are using pop rivets, punch out the waste portion of the rivet shaft before smashing it. This will present a better finish and also give you an extra tie-down location if you should need one. You could use them for securing extra 550 cord ( you can never have enough), a sharpening stone, first aid kit,... Use them for whatever you choose.
To dye the sheath, try some Rit dye. It works well on micarta and G10. You could rough up the surface with some sand paper if it had a hard time taking the dye
I'm sure there are already redundant comments about this, but you can use clear cleaner or mek and mix dye with it for PVC. Had to do it for a kids school project once. Think I got the idea off the googles
I'm a chef cook...self cleaning ovens, in the industry ,have steam functions, in the cleaning mode, have a detergent tank ,the cleaning is a mix of hot water and detergent been sprayed inside the oven in cycles..
another good idea would be to sell it as a do it yourself kit for fun.Just another option for lower cost? like the machete. Mines 15 years old and going strong. I put a 3.5" scandi by my handle for close work.
Dyeing PVC, Use Clear PVC cleaner and a "solvent dye" or "fuel dye". An eye dropper of dye concentrate in the four ounce can of clear cleaner. I've enjoyed watching you use things like PVC in unusual ways. Which brings me to a question, have you ever used the concrete test cylinders (4" dia by 8" long ) in landscaping or small project construction?. They are often available from test labs for free.
Rit Dye might work for coloring. It's been used on all sorts of plastics. Also, don't use the self-cleaning function. It'll ruin the circuits that control the oven.
Heck yeah!! I use those floor pads for my kydex press.as well works great, I'm digging the pvc sheath aluminum rivets and tow strap dangler.. totally gives it an apocalypse theme build look!!!✊️🔥✌️💚
You should use a heat gun to warm and keep it warm so you can work it any place and time you like through the process. Might save on divirce costs too.
I accidentally clicked on this video. Funny thing- If I had read the title, I wouldn’t have clicked. It wasn’t what I was looking for at the time. But I watched the whole thing because it was well made and kept me sucked in.
The only thing I can tell you about self cleaning ovens is if you use a product like Easy-ff oven cleaner, you won’t ever have to clean the oven again because it will die.
You could wrap the sheath with a fancy color duck tape. The fellow that makes pvc bows on UA-cam and wrote a book on it covers them with it. They even make a snake skin design.
A simple way to paint pvc is using sharpies. After a few applications it'll be permanent. Simple, cheap and you can draw whatever you want with several colours!
Self cleaning is mode where the door locks at 500f+ and carbonizes the filth in the oven and turns it into dust. Takes 2 hours and stinks the entire house
Personally I would have molded it with the edge towards the folded side and then rivet/cut & put the nylon belt loop on the 'blunt'/back side of the blade, along with a 'little' widening/forming at the entry after completion to let the beginning of the hilt enter. Secures from 'wobbling' and protects the cloth in the seam.
Self cleaning means it goes crazy hot and burns the crap out of your oven. Be very careful! I’ve melted the spice bottles off the back my stove before. Make sure you’re home so you don’t burn your house doen
self cleaning oven heats above 800-900+ degrees turning everything to ash for easier cleaning FOR the human, false advertisement if you ask me, that sheath turned out slick JS.
what do you think about repurposing an old piece of leather. Such as a thrift store jacket for a sheath? I have many knives with kydex sheath's. I just like leather more. or what about a composition of different materials. 90% Leather with a kydex top and bottom?
Hmm ok I must try this Dry sand the sheath with 220 and cover it with clay maybe leave it for a month and then remove the clay that might stain the sheets
I would love to get my hands on one of these ON3 (SD?) Machetes. ❤ How would I be able to get myself one of your machetes? I've got your Ulu and I effin ❤❤❤ it! It came to me hair shaving sharp! The only thing I don't have but want for it is a sheath/pouch and a grip.

That belt loop on yours will be cut off quickly. I form a belt clip from the PVC, it’s all one piece on mine.
Forming the clip or big dangler loop from the pipe as well is a great idea!
Sanding and cleaning the pvc should allow paint to stick to it, just thin the paint and maybe put a protective coating over it to help.
There are special spray paint made for plastics
I use RIT dye to change the color of surplus molle pouches. It dyes the plastic buckles fairly well. Use the dye meant for synthetic materials and add vinegar. Plenty of videos out there showing the process. Cool project!
LOL. So self cleaning isn't like little maids come out and go to town. It heats up to like 800 degrees and basically works like an incinerator that cremates bodies. I just learned about this a couple of years ago.
I work for GE Appliances and you are right. It basically turn everything to ash, then you just wipe it out.

@@opotime yeah mine locks before, during, and during the cool down.
Yikes! I won’t be using that
Yep, pyrolysis.

Ok if it’s going to be a complete machete, it needs a ferro rod holder and a bottle opener ! 🤣
And a cork screw
And a cork screw 😅😅😅
Don't forget a can opener.
And a few hex cut outs for wrenching bolts
a compass in the handle that covers a small fishing kit
That self cleaning oven feature is a good way to destroy your digital oven circuit board. At least that's what I was told by the last appliance repair guy. The circuit boards are designed to fail at ultra high temps, according to him. And that's exactly what happened to our last oven. New circuit board was almost as much as a new oven.
I reckon you could get a knife in each end of that

Just a suggestion, ABS plastic usually comes in black and works similar to PVC.
I have just used some khaki krylon spray paint on my PVC sheaths.

It might be a good idea to use grommets instead of rivets. That would give you a way to secure it to a pack. Great sheath idea using the PVC. Thanks

Get a 9v battery for your smoke detector. 😂

Thanks!!
Rit Dye might work for coloring. It's been used on all sorts of plastics.

I read one guy uses Oatey clear primer for CPVC/PVC. Just adds dye to it and wipes it on like using cleaner or cement.
Heck yeah!! I use those floor pads for my kydex press.as well works great, I'm digging the pvc sheath aluminum rivets and tow strap dangler.. totally gives it an apocalypse theme build look!!!✊️🔥✌️💚
You need to put a small washer on the side of the rivet where you hammered it...... Then it's top of the shelf.
Change the smoke detector battery.... 🙄
Nice job love it now I can do knives like this thanks jason
I would have molded the first half inch of the handle to the sheath since that little curve in it would help it fit in better
My PVC pipe sheath has housed my terava mini-pukko for 5 years. It's my most used knife.
Electrical PVC is a flat grey color.
I thought about that but it is thick walled and heavy.
15:52 what about an adjustable (sliding) retention screw?
Great idea!
Woinderful video, the tramontina is good for grass and soft vegetation.
You should use a heat gun to warm and keep it warm so you can work it any place and time you like through the process. Might save on divirce costs too.

Great sheath. You are creative and ingenious, both necessary qualities for an awesome survivalist 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you very much!
PVC off gasses do it in an open space...HDPE on the other hand is oven safe at that temperature...
Hey Jason I'm interested in one. That's pretty cool.

a welding iron with interchangeable tips is great for burning holes in plastic
A simple way to paint pvc is using sharpies. After a few applications it'll be permanent. Simple, cheap and you can draw whatever you want with several colours!
Try using Aluminum Downspouts. No cooking required.
Black walnut husks liquid might stain pvc I know if you get it on your skin it stains you a long time .
Wood stain worked well on my fiberglass door. Maybe so for pvc
Need some slots so it can be mounted on some molle
Self cleaning is mode where the door locks at 500f+ and carbonizes the filth in the oven and turns it into dust. Takes 2 hours and stinks the entire house
I would probably go for a Ritt Dye (green or black) to color the sheath. Still keen on one BTW!
Leather over top would look real nice. Gonna try this on my next sheath because just the leather made me lose my knife.
Good idea. I considered that and may make one that way to see how I like it. Thanks!
Great tutorial Sir.
Glad you liked it!
Maybe walnut hulls for stain.
Hi bro I'm a retired Army veteran and a southpaw to
I have used shoe polish ..it works ok ..use the liquid type
Cool. I was trying to make a custom sheaths out of rawhide. Like the stuff you can get in the pet aisle for dogs. Have you tried this?
Yes I have. Works really well. Soak it in water, and then let it dry around the knife. A leather awl and some bank line and you are in business.
That’s a really good way to make one, and cheap. Will have to do that for sure.
Your wife is going to use one of those machetes on you if you keep using that oven! You need to get you one for out in the shop!
You could try an electric griddle to heat the PVC.
Self cleaning means it goes crazy hot and burns the crap out of your oven. Be very careful! I’ve melted the spice bottles off the back my stove before. Make sure you’re home so you don’t burn your house doen
Good tip
Just a quick note for ya....more housefires have been caused by that "self-cleaning" feature than I can easily count. DO NOT use that feature IMHO.
I'll have to look for PVC drain pipe. I didn't think anybody sells it around here.
self cleaning oven heats above 800-900+ degrees turning everything to ash for easier cleaning FOR the human, false advertisement if you ask me, that sheath turned out slick JS.
change your smoke defector battery, thats why it keeps chirping.
You need to change the batteries in your smoke detector
That sheath is basically ambidextrous... thank you
You bake pvc in the oven, I rebuild carburetors on the kitchen cutting board. I won't tell if you don't
😂
what do you think about repurposing an old piece of leather. Such as a thrift store jacket for a sheath? I have many knives with kydex sheath's. I just like leather more. or what about a composition of different materials. 90% Leather with a kydex top and bottom?

Awesome see ya on the next one
Go to your classifieds of choice and get a cheap oven for the shop. The fumes that come off plastics are nasty.
Would ABS be better?
looks good 👍
Hmm ok I must try this
Dry sand the sheath with 220 and cover it with clay maybe leave it for a month and then remove the clay that might stain the sheets
Great video brother
For painting the pvc, I think you can use clear stain and add color like food coloring. I'm not sure, though
Fiebing’s Low VOC leather bye does a pretty good job of staining PVC.
I would love to get my hands on one of these
ON3 (SD?) Machetes.
❤
How would I be able to get myself one of your machetes? I've got your Ulu and I effin ❤❤❤ it! It came to me hair shaving sharp! The only thing I don't have but want for it is a sheath/pouch and a grip.
Email me at jasonleesalyer@gmail.com
I think I would glue some canvas or nylon on it for color
People use RIT dye for Synthetics all the time on knife scales - plastic.
Dog inside for cleaning 😂😂
Your smoke alarms are chirping lol
POLY VINYL CHLORIDE...NO MICRO...NO BAKEY ...JUS SAYIN....PVC
I love machete craft time. ❤
Finding that thin wall PVC pipe is really hard now
The thinner PVC is schedule 35 the thicker is schedule 40
A self cleaning oven can be set at a very high temperature.... So that everything inside turns into..... Dust.
Oh my, he did it👀💪❤️
Nice sheath, but I would like to have it on my back like a sling. Not on my belt.
It could be done.
ritz dye if itll dye a polymer gun frame itll dye pvc
Is number 13 taken ?
