Back in the early 90's in Connecticut I had an S1 John Player Special Edition, Black with Gold accents and wheels. Bought it for cheap from a guy that gave up on it claiming it had a terminal electrical short that no one could trace that rendered the car unusable as no accessories and lights would work. Otherwise the car was gorgeous. I flat bedded the car back to my shop and one of the crew of our drag race team nosed around the car and fiddled for about an hour and traced the problem to a wire for the license plate light that had fallen and melted onto the exhaust system...pretty much out of sight unless one really poked around. 15 minutes after that discovery and quick fix, the car was perfect and I enjoyed it for a few years before eventually selling it. :)
Things! I am saying things because I’ve been told to! But actually… super cool video. The esprit (the one you have in the video especially) is so placed in its time.
While the cinematography has always been top-notch, the most improved here is Derek’s voice-over. I remember early DTS’s sounded like they were scripts read by AI ( kinda on brand :) for Derek) but this felt much more like someone enthusiastic about a story wanting to convey the information they possess. Great work Derek.
It has been alluded to a few times in the Carmudgeon show that DTS may be a little bit on the spectrum. A monotone voice is part of the deal, but so is an encyclopedic level of knowledge about a special interest, i.e. cars in this case. Yet, it does appear that he learned how to provide a bit more inflection in his narration. I am just glad he is willing to share his passion with the world and that we can benefit from it.
I saw this vid in my recommended right as I was watching the BTS with DTS on the Range Rover Classic and _immediately_ knew who it was. Good to have you back.
You guys do the best reviews! An early Esprit’s with a turbo Honda K20 bolted to a Porsche 6 speed trans would be a great weapon AND daily driver, even today!😊
I fell in love with the Europa when I was a kid. Saw it in some anime and asked my dad if he knew what it was. He went on to tell me about driving one in the 70s, how it felt more like a suit then a car and how he barely fit (6’3) which doesn’t give me much hope if I ever get to meet my hero (6’2), but I still hope I atleast get to drive one or better one day. Great video, lotus will surely live on forever in the hearts of all automotive enthusiasts
Bravo, extremely well done and well edited film. I sent a touch of the old pet licious videos. These cars have always been one of my favorites. That tartan interior is just too much! Love it! As a young man when I had my own garage/repair shop I had a customer with a Jensen Healy. I kept it for several weeks sorting it out. Spent more than a few late nights in the summer, cruising it around Cleveland with the top down. That engine was , fantastic. There is a guy that I’ve been following on UA-cam called the soup, who is restoring a Lotus Espree from the ground up and I hope you’ve had a chance to see some of those videos. Thank you for sharing this wonderful information. JT: Orlando FLA
i didnt even know this was dts when i clicked on it, great vid but maybe the title could make the veiwers aware of that, i would've watched on release if i'd known it was hyphen.
BTS with DTS makes a return! The Esprit is where I got my first taste of Lotus, so while people fell in love with pretty little Elans or their F1 capability, it was the glorious wedge that had me pay attention when I was young. Still not sure if I'd have an early lightweight 4 cylinder or the later V8 one.
Such a beautiful car. I remember seeing the original concept car at the Los Angeles Auto Expo when it was first shown, and being just blown away by its looks. Over 50 years later, it's still a beautiful car.
For hyphen-boy, on a podcast with Adam Sandler I think I saw you in a Rapha jacket. Where do you ride ? Future topic -- enjoying backroads and openspace on two wheels or four.
It is a very good clip. I first here Chapman's voice. impressive! I have 2nd hand 1982 RH Esprit 3. It has been static object for more than 25 years. I like Italdesign Esprit very much. yet I am disappointed its handling and build quality. because my Honda R&D chassis design engineer experience in Japan. yet even though the Esprit is the my my most favorite car among Honda City Cabriolet and Citroen C4 coupe.
Beautiful in Blue! I used to have two S1(yellow and white). I restored white one with full gray Alcantara style material but this two tones is very well done. So I assume you painted the body as original Esprit came with paint under resin right? It looks like US car so carborator must be Stromberg. You get more horse power with Dellorto but it does not pass the smog in California..it was my good memory to own 2 sets of carb just for smog lol. Thank you for beautiful video.
I' ve lusted after an Esprit aever since seeing The Spy Who Loved Me (when I was about 11). I had the means and chance to buy one a few years ago but wussed out and bought an Elise instead. Still got it. Maybe I'll get an Esprit at some point...
Excellent video what a wonderful tribute. Do you happen to know the chassis # of the blue car featured in the video. I did a restoration on an s1 esprit in 2017 same color and int
Correction: The Citroen SM gearbox was modified with a reversed ring and pinion to support having the engine in front of the gearbox on the esprit and merak (the engine sits behind the gearbox on the SM). Otherwise the esprit and merak would have had 5 reverse speeds.
Hell yeah DTS is back!
I even clicked the video not knowing it was mr hyphon himself. What a delight
My uncle has one of these. I can’t help but gawk whenever he brings it to a family gathering. Saying hello to grandma can wait; the Esprit is here.
Your uncle might be the coolest person alive

What a beautiful tribute to the iconic Esprit
This IS the best automotive content on UA-cam in my book. Thank you Derek!
Hope you keep this regularly 🎉
So great to see BTS with DTS is back!
Welcome back to the tubes of You DTS
Your description of the cars in these BTS videos makes me feel like I'm driving👌
Things! I am saying things because I’ve been told to! But actually… super cool video. The esprit (the one you have in the video especially) is so placed in its time.
Hey Derek. Big fan, love your work. Haven't watch a video yet but I'm sure it's going to be great
Very well done!
Good to have DTS back in the feed, be it BTS, OTS or any other acronym. 🎉
So nice to see a proper behind the scenes history of the Esprit 😉
What a brilliant tribute to the Espirit! Thanks for doing the car justice.
Gorgeous music choice for the outtro. Somehow fitting of Lotus’ beauty, elegance, and struggles.
Been missing this stuff, looking forward to the next one!
Love this thing. Had an Esprit Turbo for many years, always wanted to drive the early N/A cars. Keep up the good work hyphen
Good work Derrick Tan ~ Scott! And everyone involved
Exceptional video on the Esprit! Love the car! Nice work DTS / OTS and crew!
Wonderful video. You managed to cram a whole lot of relevant Lotus history into a 15 min. homage to the Esprit. Well done, sir!
love me some DTS story telling! I'm glad he's back, I was worried that when BTS with DTS ended it would be the last we'd ever see of this
Let's go guys! Nice to meet you again!
PHENOMENAL CAR CONTENT! This was a great video Derek! So glad DTS is back!
So happy to have these beautifully shot drive-a-longs and history lessons with Hyphen back!
Added to watch later. Glad to see you start this up again
Glad your back. Love the history you supply.
Happy to see Derek back in videos like this! Fantastic work everyone involved
Love to see Hypen back!

For real. The best know how to show a little emotion in their recordings. A lot of guys just hit record and read the paper.

Class is back in session.😃
I ❤ automotive history time with DTS. Hells yes.
Happy that you’re back!
Absolutely amazing video!!

A 300bhp k20 wold be about twice the power of the original unit. A terrifying prospect.
So glad DTS is back making these videos. Easily in my top 3 for YT content.
How can i have missed this channel!?
Ill share in my blog =)
Its a continuation of series from issimi, BTS with DTS , and Derek also appears on The Curmudgeon Show
@@janpamua7714 Hehe yes i understood that, thanks for explaining ;)
Masterfully made!!

Excellent as always!!!
Thanks Derek, nice to see you're face in a video , a great continuation to the BehindTheScenes series.
Very nice video. Rest in peace Collin !
Great video! I love these tributes to old supercars.
Love to see you guys on here ❤️
Lovely video! Worthy of a subscription. Thank you!
Great work team, love the content

We are so back! I love Derek's content, the historical background makes every car related video so much more interesting and complete.
Welcome back
i didnt even know this was dts when i clicked on it, great vid but maybe the title could make the veiwers aware of that, i would've watched on release if i'd known it was hyphen.
Need more sound of that dual cam!!
If I could only fit into one of those. Those green dials!
Loved it. Thanks for that amazing video :)

Thank you chatgbt great review!
looks good in blue. - nice video

Man that was a well written little documentary - and the ending nearly had me in tears for whats happened to Lotus recently
Great video-thanks so much. Love the pure lines of the S1 Esprit-nice to see history combined with driving impressions-well done.
DTS! Esprit! Perfect video. Thanks, you made my day.
Welcome back!

What an interior my lord
That aqua green and light grey interior was gorgeous.
Oh yeahhhh! 💪💪💪
thanks for the video, it has given me enough motivation to start working on my s3 again.
Very enjoyable and well produced video. I just subscribed. Thank you.
Nice vid
That was excellent. Thank you.
A first gen body with some of the updates. That would be nice.
Yes.... Must comment for the algorithm... the hyphen demands it.
I thank every investor who lost a fortune with Lotus that they kept this zombie company alive until the Elise arrived. Great car.

Excellent sir 👏
Very good video, well done !
that shot at 0:49 is absolutley gorgeous
The twin cam Europa is awesome.

Alright, ETS is back!
Hi UA-cam, this is me engaging with this content. Please do the algo thing. Please take this channel to the moon!
I wonder how Collin Chapman would feel about the new electric beasts wearing the Lotus badge?
If I could, i'd marry Hyphen no questions asked.
Was the Otis on the graffiti wall planned 😂
Correction: The Citroen SM gearbox was modified with a reversed ring and pinion to support having the engine in front of the gearbox on the esprit and merak (the engine sits behind the gearbox on the SM). Otherwise the esprit and merak would have had 5 reverse speeds.
Wooo!!
Oh hell yes
The Esprit's success in the 90's would have been a good bookend as it was featured in such films as Pretty Woman, Basic Instinct, If Looks Could Kill.
All hail the algorithm
Hell yeah man
Are the buttresses on each side of the gear shift knob, are they part of the centre spine of the chassis?
Genius
Anyone know what the price of one of those first lotus kit cars were bought for back then?
