To the Brink of Failure: the Troubled Life of the Lamborghini Diablo - Derek Tam-Scott
Today, the Diablo is an iconic supercar of the 1990s, but it was redesigned at the last minute (by Marcello Gandini), made a lot of people mad, and almost failed commercially because it was launched into a crashing supercar market. The Diablo’s development and production spanned four different owners of the company Lamborghini and it’s a minor miracle the car even made it to production. In this video, directed and edited by @CarTalesOfficial, Derek Tam-Scott explores the car’s tortured birth via this 1999 Diablo VT Roadster and seeks to answer the question of whether its chaotic development keeps it from being any good.

The Esprit Turned Lotus Into a Grown-Up Car Company - Derek Tam-Scott
Переглядів 27 тис.Місяць тому
Although Lotus was founded in 1952 with a £25 loan from founder Colin Chapman’s girlfriend (and later wife) Hazel, Lotus was on top of the world by 1970. The company moved into a shiny new factory at Hethel in 1966, went public on the London Stock Exchange in 1968, and won its third and fourth Formula 1 world championships in 1968 and 1970. Although they were going toe to toe with the world’s m...
@10:40 That’s what I heard. I’ve met three Diablo owners and yes, they all said the same thing “the design and quality of the Diablo interior is not good.”
Just a few years ago, as recently as 2020, this car was completely invisible to all but the most die-hard Lamborghini enthusiasts. Now, this car has reached total celebrity status - everyone at car shows gawks over a Diablo (sometimes, even more than an aventador or countach). It’s kind of endearing honestly. I never thought this car would ever be cool again, even after it was featured in all the 90s racing video games.
How is it that I'm subscribed to the carmudgeon show, every other show that Cammisa and DTS do but UA-cam decided I didn't want to see this?
Hyphen's writing is so good
what ist the name off that color? It's stunning.
So great to see the return of DTS car stories. I have missed them.
whats the average mid quality Esprit going for? v4/v8
Am I the only one who said the hyphen in their heads?
Hey Derek! Big fan! But film your videos at 24 FPS please! The quality videos you guys make deserve cinematic framerate, not youtube 60fps crap
Esprit S1. Always nice to see one in action on youtube. I have a 1980 Esprit S2.2. It is difficult to say with the information from a video, but it seems as if the engine is not to happy, stuttering in higher revs? Mine has the 912 engine (S2.2 and S3) instead of the 907 ( from the S1 and S2).
I have always wanted an Esprit, however it is a maintenance and financial nightmare. For the same money I got an Elise. 6 years now and the only issues are niggling electrical (surprise surprise).
Great reboot of DTS. Keep them coming.
Wait...how many Diablo's did you have to drive/test?
that closing line along with a mundane corolla driving on the opposite direction, perfect timing! kudos!
D T-S!! he's back, finally!
Is Derek not with Issimi anymore?
Fantastic review! Thank you. Subbed
It's pretty awesome and serendipitous to have a gray Corolla drive by that Diablo at the very last second of the video.
Omg v12 starter noises make me feel a kinda way
Is that hoovie’s old Diablo?
Glad to see these are continuing. They're so unique in capturing the experience of these cars with excellent cinematography, audio, and writing. Your passion for these cars comes through so well. The way you integrate the historical context is so enlightening too. Edit: we need DTS-narrated audiobooks on automotive history.
Lotus was a poioneer of many aerodynamics adaptions in F1. But they were often following ideas that debuted in Jim Hall's Chaparrals.
Was never impressed by Diablo's design, and, as a fan of 90's Chrysler concepts, I'm disappointed that they ruined Gandini's design. However, they somehow managed to fix the styling with the roadster, which looked way better than the coupe.
I think, if colin chapman had someone like luca demontozemolo, lotus wouldve been as striving as ferrari today.
Jason wouldn't make us wait a full minute to get to the video
what, not a single mention of the DeLorean? :P
A very interesting backstory and a well-produced video
Hyphen! UA-cam has finally directed me here, I am glad to see you’re continuing the BTS with DTS type videos. Love the Diablo - a huge hero car for me, I should never drive one (not that I ever will 😂)
Is that exhaust stock? It looks like it’s trying to mimic Pagani but it predates it so I assume it’s the other way around
this was always awesome
I see DTS, I subscribe.
I'm glad that Chrysler ordered the redesign of Gandini's original. The car is so much better off for it, and one of the best looking supercars of all time, IMO. Thanks for making this great little documentary DTS!
Less than 3 minutes in, and I can already say that Derek is back and in most excellent form.. I do wish the music behind the VO was lowered a tad just to really let the words stand out and resonate..
Hi DTS, this is fantastic, I have only just discovered your new channel, very best of luck with it.
It was 1997, I was a spacey 11-year-old, daydreaming in the window seat of a tour bus with a bunch of other boys from the U.S. as we putted down an English freeway. All of the sudden, a chorus of boys erupted with this strange exclamation: "Lam-bor-ghi-niiiii!!!!" A yellow flash, a screaming engine howl, and this sculptural wedge that was somehow the footprint of a car yet roughly 3 inches tall, disappearing into the distance on steamrollers tires. That was it: the fraction of a second where this automotive agnostic became a diehard enthusiast. Your videos are always a cut above, and this one was an absolute masterpiece. Thank you!
Hell yes Derek.
Great show as per usual. Yourself and the budget Adam Sandler dude with probably Henry Beanpole thrown into the mix for good measure are making the best automotive content available today.
lol jason "content" cammisa and catchpole are true car gods
I once watched a Diablo jump-start a Testarossa. It was fucking awesome.
I want one if nothing other than to annoy people. 😂
My now late father was a hotrodder and engine tuner on the side when I was a kid. We had Europe's, Esprits, etc in the driveway regularly, also including Maseratis, Lamborghinis, and Dinos. No one(or very few) in America back then knew or were willing to work on such cars, and there was no dealership support for cars older the 10 years back then either, at all. Parts were difficult to source and could take months and a lot of midnight phone calls overseas to find them. Anyway... On a Europa, my dad pulled the body off to access everything better. It had a VERY simple frame. Very much a kitcar but well thought out and easy to repair once apart. The Esprit however had a more complex and evolved and tested frame. But the interior of early examples were very cheap and flimsy while other cars at the price point had more finished interior designs. Drove wonderfully though, very fast high revving engine. My dad said it felt just like an underdeveloped Dino that could hold a line at speed really well. Again this was early examples. Neat cars and company.
great review on one of my favorite stretches of road
I live only a few minutes drive from here - a great road for a weekend drive
Ahh, I enjoyed the few 60FPS shots of the Lotus video, was hoping you'd continue that with future videos. If possible - please continue recording these gorgeous videos in 60 FPS. Also, damn that Diablo sounds incredible.
That looks like an expensive exhaust. Great sound recording of the engine/exhaust note.
Should be noted that particular exhaust sound is not standard. Great video btw
I like it but the next Lamborghini generation is probably going to be my first choice over this one because it’s more German meets Italian design language . The diablo is more of a collector car . Truly a work of art 😊
Great content. Thank you
What a beautiful review (of many).
The Countache was impossible to follow from a design viewpoint. They should have tried a few more drafts, though.
I'd love to see a Diablo irl, it was just "one of those cars" during the 90s that if you were a kid at that time, you just were awestruck by. I've been fortunate enough to see a Countach tho.
This channel is gonna go places!
