She was handling it fine , as I walked up to the register to assist with him and the building line. If this business is tanking it's due executive compensation and them trying to sell items for $10-20. It was very disappointing to see items sold over $5.
I think overall over time it's hard to keep anything 5 dollars or less or any current price for that matter Naturally inflation happens and cost of good keep increasing and of course other competitors coming into the market It will be very hard to maintain that year to year even if the CEOs and Shareholders keep numbers at a healthy range and not just pushing the profit button to hard that eventually it will collapse in itself

I love how retailers instantly blame stealing for inventory shrinking. Meanwhile they hire as little people as possible and pay them as little as possible. It’s not always stealing a lot of the times it’s an issue with inventory count. You see it all the time especially with Walmart. You look something that’s supposed to be out of stock and you’re staring at some of the product still on the shelf🤷🏾♂️.
Yep, mis-counts when staff or a third-party inventory company go through and count everything is a big issue too. And damaged products also count as shrink... I can't think of the last time I went to a 5below or dollar store and didn't see stuff broken or spilled. It happens more in cheap places like that where both staff AND customers don't value the product enough to be careful with it. "Shrink" is literally anything that gets taken out of store inventory without being sold. Not just theft.
I absolutely agree! I have a friend who works in management for a mid-sized local retailer and he said his boss told him to always, ALWAYS claim theft loss over anything else because they have insurance that covers some theft costs but no amount of insurance will cover losses from a bad economy or poor management of their stock. Also, politicians want you to believe theft is just out of control so you won't focus on the horrible economy while they continue to rake in the cash. It's classic political distraction tactics.
Yeah I agree, I worked there for $11 an hour. Do you really think I’ll bat an eye at a thief for $11 an hour? Why does five below deserve that money and I don’t?
That’s the stupidity of marking your price in your company name. I remember Discount Harry’s growing up in Camden. That name allows you to grow with the times and still present a value
Five below has been in our neighborhood now for 6 months we have a lot of tweeners in our neighborhood, middle school and even some high schoolers, they really loved in my neighborhood cuz it's not very expensive and they can buy very nice birthday gifts and occasion gifts for their schoolmates and it's not going to cost their parents or them a lot of money
Did you ever think to just walk in and see for yourself or do you just drive/walk by it? But yeah, it doesn't help that this store is pretty regional. The west coast didn't have it for years after the middle and east did. I'd here about all the discounted toys and such being readily available for cheap while being stuck with Ross or a local bodega
The consumer/customer did not gobble up 'self check out' idea, it was forced upon them & other retailers just copied each other, Because they didn't want to be left behind.
@@SicSemperTyrannisx9 I mostly only shop at Walmart. I love self check-out but I think there are some people who need to learn that you cannot do $300 in groceries at the self check-out. That requires a bagging carosel, so they need to go to a line with a cashier. Walmart will still always have a few lines open for that. It boggs everyone down when those people are there. I don't like going to Walmart for quick items because of this and I wish the cashiers were informed to direct customers better to avoid this. It sounds rude, but it's just not practical to have someone with that many items bag it themselves (without a bagging station, like with Aldi. I kind of wish Walmart did have this as it takes longer to put stuff into reuseable bags than the ones at the store, so I rarely use my reuseable bags at Walmart).
@@SicSemperTyrannisx9 That logic is completely disconnected from the topic I brought up.... Not to mention, I've seen the algorithm before they even tested that scenario...😂🤣but thx, You're a true national treasure.
Five Below is a mess. You need an hour or two to sift through all the poorly presented inventory to find anything of interest or true value. Bunch of frivolous stuff offered.
Because they shrunk the amount of staff the stores have since they put in all self checkouts and the theft increased. Also the prices increased that does not match the name.
One thing this article missed, "shrink" isn't ONLY theft. It's literally any time things get removed from inventory without being sold. I used to work retail, and when I got made register supervisor I was told the acronym "PIE" for sources of shrink to be careful of... PIE = Paperwork, Internal, External. Paperwork: intentional or accidental mistakes when receiving or transferring products, or when taking inventory of current stock. Internal: theft or damage done by staff, and mistakes when ringing up purchases. External: theft or damage done by customers.
I believe what really keeps Five and Below afloat is their unique stock. Unique food and beverage, and trendy stickers, decals, and decors. You can tell the appeal is to a younger audience and for those getting cheap gifts for others.
Self-checkout is one part of the problem. The other part is retailers who refuse to try and stop shoplifters. When thieves KNOW nobody will stop them... they will rob you blind!
Welp, as a retail employee (not at 5 below), I don't get paid enough to care and I'm not risking my safety/job security for a corporation that pays me pennies from their billions. (I'm not tryna come off as hostile btw, just my POV)
@@chelsbeaupeep Exactly, and companies don't want employees putting themselves in danger as it's a legal liability. Even high-end stores that have security don't want the guards chasing folks who are stealing.
I’m grown but a big kid and collector.. I love going to Five Below.. my son hits the snack section and I hit the toy section. I love it!! Five Below is great for teens to who wants to decorate but don’t have a lot of money. I love the tech section too.
I don't think theift is really at play here at least not in my area, its the lack of valued products. My 5B store never changes anything. The same stuff from last year is the same stuff now. Nothing in that store is really worth spending at least $5
Opening too many store at short time frame is not good. Soon every corner has a store and they will (and always will) compete with each other whether they like it or not. What I think they should do is 'specialised' some of their store. For instance, they can specialised Store A to focus on selling some electronics accessories while Store B (just located a few blocks away) to focus on selling fashion accessories. Now I'm also find myself getting tired of my local 'budget friendly' store, because every store sell the same items. Not gonna lie, but I would like to see more varieties or specialised store than having everything under one roof.
All of that stores, but Builder's square I have been to a lot. At salvation Army in town once I saw a cheap Venture polo and bought it lol. I wore it a couple times to places. I used to rent a lot of video games at Phar-More as a kid. I remember a shopko, but it closed after only a few years at the mall. It was in where Venture used to be.
At Five Below, the cashier handles the checkout process, so there's no self-checkout option. However, there's an issue with the survey at the end of the transaction. The employee stands right there as you answer questions, including "Was the employee nice?" This makes it challenging to provide honest feedback since the employee is watching you. While I still don't care, others might feel intimidated by the employee's presence, making the questionnaire useless.
@@agy234the cashier still stands right there dead next to you, pulling the bags apart as you bag your items, pressing buttons on the screen for you. They may as well keep manual checkout counters.
To be fair… what do you expect for ~$5? This is the kind of store I would have spent my allowance on, along with Claire’s, and the Sanrio store in middle school.
@@deathlarsen7502I’m go say this if you don’t go in knowing what to expect you might be disappointed but I’ve found some awesome stuff there all my color changing led lights came from there and also this was a great place to find random Christmas gifts
$5 below, where now half the store is over $5. This is why I don’t shop there anymore. Same goes for the dollar tree. If I’m going to buy cheap stuff I’m not going to pay Walmart or target prices.
The fact that they have a shoplifitng warning sign right front and center of the candy section 11:01 tells me shoplifting is more than just an issue with adults these days. How sad.
My mom once bought me a pair of headphones from here (just a few years ago, so I was already in my late twenties or early 30's, lol). Bless her heart, she wanted to get me something tech related but was on a budget. I still have them in case some horrendous financial crisis happens with me that even Klarna can't help with and I can't buy any other headphones or earbuds, but honestly, they're already rather obsolete. Theyre not bluetooth and use an aux cable. I could use them on my Switch and PS5 controller, I suppose, which is what I do with my $200 pair of headphones. But my cellphone, like many, does not have a headphone port (I sometimes lament this but I was moving to bluetooth anyways when this change happened. I use my phone for music or listening to UA-cam when I clean and have had too many close calls of nearly pulling my phone into my dish water when I forgot I was still tethered to it by a cord). So, the headphones my mom got me sit in a plastic tote labeled "Tech Stuff" with other random stuff I rarely use.
It's Just how it goes nothing can stay the same price forever even if you don't have greedy shareholders trying to choke out every cent Inflation continues to happen and cost of goods continues to increase over time Trying to maintain 5 dollars and below is only good up to a certain point In my opinion if they named it a regular store then ppl wouldn't be as mad that things have a wide rarity of prices because they aren't fixed on everything being 5 below Similar to when you walk into a Walmart you don't stress the prices of things compared to being already programed by the company itself that it sells 5 and below prices thus you won't feel like they jipping you when things were 5 dollars and now it's 10 dollars if you get what I mean
Went in a Five Below for the first time about two months ago. The name doesn’t make sense because i saw many items priced well above $5. Aside from that 99% of what they sell is just garbage. Non essential stuff that you would never need. Walked out and didn’t buy anything
This's like a lot of stores lately. They expand-over extend-then you hear about them having problems. Inflation and all the uncertainty it's becoming common today.
the move away from self checkout is incredibly tragic. self checkout is an unequivocally good experience that maximizes capacity and lets the customer set our own pace. I love dollar tree but one of my biggest complaints has always been the long lines at the 1 open register. if five below is rolling back I don't think my local dollar tree will get self checkout any time soon.
I just wish they would stop lieing about why they now stand at the self checkouts to ring up our stuff. Talking about "customer service experience"...nooooo you trying to prevent theft. Just be honest like the big box stores are.
Always saw 5 below but never went in. I thought it's 5 degree below shop for winter stuff. They never to advertise outside the store better. Now, i want to check it out. 😂😂😂
Do it! I love this store! They have a bunch of fun stuff actually. I have to admit, I go once every couple months and spend at least $100 on new stuff for my apartment. 😎
Retail theft has been overblown by numerous reports. These retail companies have made record profits that's why target and Walmart are lowering prices as we speak. These stores are full of junk you don't need it so I'd still clear from it and it's similar counterparts.
Just shopped there today. I was impressed with all the variety of things they had in the store. I bought a set of Bluetooth earphones and they work really well.
These companies are still making major profits, I personally believe shoplifting isn’t as bad as many of these businesses make it seem. When all else fails blame shoplifting.
Five below can be useful, you just have to go with specific things in mind. The problem comes in when you go to just see what items they have. I dont visit five below often, last time i went, i went with balcony decor in mind. I got a couple of medium sized outdoor rugs, a small metal table and a couple of decor items. I use it all frequently, it is a part of our balconies practicality. On the other hand, i used to just go to go. I can't tell you much of what i purchased in the past... Because they were impulsive purchases. The things i have found useful from five below that cost less than other stores, Nintendo switch controllers, pet toys, cat backpack, purfume/cologne, some books, various electrical items, and spiritual items... Everything else, was a waste of money. I guess thats every store 🤣
Five below feels like Temu in real life. My local store feels and looks dystopian. White on white everywhere. Nothing of quality. Anything you buy you know won't get used more than a couple times. Haven't been back.
my kids loved this store but now it sucks. They charge for bags cashiers are lazy and make you ring yourself up. I just would rather shop at tj max where i get customer service
5 below is cheap junk, but i guess it is cool for small gifts and like stocking stuffers, basically the brick and mortar version of temu. they just opened a new 5 below in my area and it is all self checkout, they have one register for people who want to use cash i think and one employee in the store
Damn near most items there are already above $5... Well ok things are below that still but it's not a Bagan as it once was. Yes you get deals there... it's a Slippery slope
Taylor swift fans did not make those bracelets popular…. They’ve been popular for years and the EDM community started it by trading them years ago. Also they’re called Kandi….
I like that you have analysts on talking about the fundamentals and idiosyncrasies of the stock. It'd be cool if you eventually covered every stock like this.
One thing has always been clear to me. I rather pay more sacrificing saving here and there in a company that values their employees. You will never find me in Walmart, nevertheless shopping on a foreign company’s website that has no disregard for their employees. Yet alone the environment.
Have never heard of them. They seem like a Zoomer version of Dollar General or Dollar Tree. Target is not a discount anything. When you have to spend $30 to $50 for a pair of pants/jeans, nope. Walmart is half that price. Also, school supplies are not discretionary items. They are required by schools.
I went to the store for the first time that opened in my area it was a disappointment. If I still ate gelatin I I might have liked it more. They had a large gummy section. It seemed like they just had Dollar Trees left overs. In my area it next to a Dollar Tree, Michael's and Kohl's. It replaced Tuesday Morning and I was so disappointed a great store is gone and now that. Will I go back probably not.
I've never shopped at Five Below nor Five Beyond as both retail chains rely on impulse buying which is never good on a regular basis. It's even worse when the retailers target children and train kids to buy impulsively or when it's suggested via social media. The business model will be unsustainable over time. Self-checkout is overused in the retail industry. While it started because of the pandemic, self-checkout continues to reduce labor costs as wages increase. The business tool is a blessing that is becoming a curse. Retailers will have to face paying human workers what is needed to live in the USA instead of avoiding the higher wages. 🤔
One time when I was manager one of my highschool employees showed uo 3 hours late, asked to use the office computer to write his 2 week notice, asked if he needed to stick around and said cool peace out 😂
It's funny they always blame theft and not pricing. The store used to have items that fit the name, now it should be called 5 Above. Because they priced a lot of items at $5.55. It's just like Dollar Tree and that extra 25 cents, it adds up quickly and picking up random things is no longer worth it. The quality of the items barely hit the $5 mark, but consumers buy them because unlike online shopping there is instant gratification. Most of the $10 and above items are not made to last and people can spend the same amount or a little more at other stores or online for better quality. Having only self checkout registers but requiring employees to check you out is awkward in it's positioning. Also the stores are understaffed so you end up waiting in line while staring at a bunch of unused machines. The company spent the money on the machines and won't replace them with registers, or at least do the smart thing and redesign the store so when standing at one with a employee you feel like a guest and not a potential criminal when checking out. Some stores have added security guards, that stand at the door and sometimes ask to check your receipt. Which is crazy because you just stood in line so someone could check you out in full view of security. It makes you feel like a thief not a customer. The stores are no longer a cheap, quick, fun experience that you would just go in because you were in the area. Corporations are more focused on growth then maintaining a loyal customer base. Profits are up because prices are up, meanwhile the customer base feels alienated and those new higher prices can only sustain stores for so long before the impact of fewer shoppers hits. The big wigs always come up with these overcomplicated reasonings for failures instead of implementing simple solutions that would mean a little less profit.
KKV in China is very similar to Five Below except they sell liquor and wine. Mind blown when I checked out KKV for the first time. I had to leave I was so overwhelmed.
Is anyone thinking why the name FIVE below has not changed their name to FIVE and more??🤷🏾♂️ If it’s geared for kids/teenagers then the parents might want to know why this company has tricked the consumer into thinking that items are still $5 and below. FIVE beyond needs to be the sign OUTSIDE.
They haven't changed their name for the same reason Dollar Tree hasn't changed their name, even though everything is $1.25. Five Below needs to slow down on expansion. More stores doesn't necessarily mean more profits. I have been in retail for 47 years.
@@mr.ksplacekevynmarshall7721 Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Five below, etc…all need to be put on some kind of survey or something where the Better Business Bureau, Consumer Reports need to get involved.

If this business is tanking it's due executive compensation and them trying to sell items for $10-20. It was very disappointing to see items sold over $5.
I think overall over time it's hard to keep anything 5 dollars or less or any current price for that matter
Naturally inflation happens and cost of good keep increasing and of course other competitors coming into the market

First, they have to change the name. Second, they have to sell valuable things for their high prices.

I thought it was some kind of pool supply store for YEARS.
Did you ever think to just walk in and see for yourself or do you just drive/walk by it? But yeah, it doesn't help that this store is pretty regional. The west coast didn't have it for years after the middle and east did. I'd here about all the discounted toys and such being readily available for cheap while being stuck with Ross or a local bodega

well stated. just like temu
I'm in my 40s and I LOVE Five Below 😜 They have a ton of licensed products, a great selection of giftable items, etc -- and a lot of great price point
The consumer/customer did not gobble up 'self check out' idea, it was forced upon them & other retailers just copied each other, Because they didn't want to be left behind.
The fact that customers will now often wait in line at self check out instead of going to an open cashier suggests you are wrong.

No kidding. It wasn’t geared towards middle aged men…
Because nO oNe WaNtS fRiViLoUs StUf, right? 😂😂😂😂😂
The ‘o’ in the below looked like indicating a Celsius temperature which made me think five below is a frozen food store
exactly
Literally when it first started opening in my area I kept confusing it with that bar in Manhattan that sets the temperature to below freezing

I miss the classic stores like Service Merchandise, Phar-More, Venture, Builder's Square,... The 90s were wonderful.
Bunch of 🗑 in that store
Did he said he’s been shopping at Five Below since he was a kid?!? Sir… how old are you? They’ve only been open since 2012. 🤦🏽♀️
Many of them have self checkouts now
Who cares

I love 5 and below , I'm tired of us loosing all the stores we grew up on that help certain communities to be able to afford things
It's Just how it goes
nothing can stay the same price forever even if you don't have greedy shareholders trying to choke out every cent
Inflation continues to happen and cost of goods continues to increase over time
Trying to maintain 5 dollars and below is only good up to a certain point
In my opinion if they named it a regular store then ppl wouldn't be as mad that things have a wide rarity of prices because they aren't fixed on everything being 5 below
Similar to when you walk into a Walmart you don't stress the prices of things compared to being already programed by the company itself that it sells 5 and below prices thus you won't feel like they jipping you when things were 5 dollars and now it's 10 dollars if you get what I mean
Vote to close the boaders!
Nothing they sell is five and below, and it’s all crap. Let them fail. Corporations are taking advantage of people.
In the Phoenix area there already is self checkout at dollar-twenty-five tree.
Majority of 5Below registers are always open, so how often do you have to wait in line at a 5below vs other store! A minute at best

Retail theft has been overblown by numerous reports. These retail companies have made record profits that's why target and Walmart are lowering prices as we speak.
These stores are full of junk you don't need it so I'd still clear from it and it's similar counterparts.

It replaced Tuesday Morning and I was so disappointed a great store is gone and now that. Will I go back probably not.
I have seen some Five and Below stores around me shuttered it’s doors
I have never found one thing I needed from them. Stupid store.
So when do we start shorting?😅
We sell crap should be their motto. Shopping at these types of stores like dollar general and family dollar is depressing
O yeah let give $$ to big papa Jeff Bezos

If it’s geared for kids/teenagers then the parents might want to know why this company has tricked the consumer into thinking that items are still $5 and below.
