  • A Portrait of a Craftsman. A behind-the-scenes look at the process, life, and creative process of renowned Blacksmith Robert Eggerling, maker of the most exquisite Mosaic Damascus steel.
    Mosaic Damascus steel is a type of Damascus steel that is characterized by a pattern of small, geometric shapes, often arranged in a mosaic-like pattern. The pattern is created by using different types of steel with contrasting colors or patterns, which are then layered and forged together. The resulting steel has a unique, decorative pattern that is highly prized by knife and tool makers, as well as by collectors. The process of making Mosaic Damascus steel is more complex than traditional Damascus steel, and it requires a high level of skill and expertise to produce.

    I've sold knife steel to over 30,000 makers from the USA to Australia. Robert was my 1st customer. I met him at the NY Knife Show over 20 years ago. Not only has he shown me how to make Damascus, he has shown me how to live a simpler life. He is a true friend and a true Artist. God bless you Robert for all the time we've spent together and all the patients you've shown teaching me your very special craft. God has blessed me with your friendship.

      Hello Aldo, we have both been blessed to know this great man. I met Robert years ago while walking Blade Show. I came across his table where Robert and Mary were displaying pieces of his work, and it literally stopped me in my tracks and took my breath away. I knew I was in the presence of a true artist. I spent the next two days at his table!

    Thank all for your comments. I run Robert's Website as he doesn't do computers (Boy would that make life more simple). Anyway, I pass all the comments on to Robert so he knows you all care so much.

    I am amazed when I look at the Cabot guns. I now see why the Damascus guns are priced so expensive. You all found a gem in that artist; he is a humble and decent man.🙏🏾

    My father was a blacksmith by trade. I remember him pounding the glowing iron on the anvil for hours. This film brought back great memories of his shop, the smell and and the dim lighting. Although your pistols are out of my price range I will make it a priority to eventually own one of these pieces of art. Thank you for this beautiful portrait of a beautiful human being. God bless!

    This is a beautiful tribute to a truly inspiring craftsman and artist. Thank you Rob and Cabot for showcasing such an amazing talent. The industrial arts are disappearing all too fast, and it takes incredible people like you to showcase incredible people like Bob Eggerling. The final product of the Leviathan 1911 Pistol, is breathtaking. What an incredible marriage of master craftsmen!

    Great documentary ! My father had a Damascus twist shotgun that he lost when he moved from Pennsylvania soon after World War 2, and found later it was being kept as a memento of a relative who hadn't actually owned it. But he was so glad to see it enjoyed that he let them think so, rather than start a family feud. I would love to own this or any Cabot pistol, and may some day. Full disclosure : my father's cousin's daughter's husband used to work for Cabot, but I heard he retired. I have always loved the look of Damascus steel.

    I’m so happy to say that getting to know Robert over the past years is an honor. Robert is a member of my guild. I see him just about every month. Always comes into the shop to see what everyone is working on and will give advice and help other smith out. Robert is a master craftsman at his work, and is a truly great man. 308jc

    • @jimhrisoulas
      @jimhrisoulas 10 місяців тому

      No he IS a blacksmith..A press is just power.. it can do nothing unless the one who is operating it knows what to do wioth that power..Just like a hand hammer or even a power hammer. It is NOT the tools.. it is the one using them.. I am a "no body" in this industry and I like to keep it that way..but give the man his due here..this isn't all "hot work"..90% of this is "brain work":..The man has paid his dues..Give him some respect here...
