They should've kept this in. A bit of foreshadowing into what made Renton want to run off to Amsterdam and who gave him the idea. And a nice ending for Mother Superior
Neither did I, but they must have filmed a lot that never made it into the movie. They even filmed the scene where Begbie meets his father at the station couse in the second film they show it as a flashback.
I grew up in the same area as Peter Mullan (Swanny) and knew him back in the day. He does a pretty good Edinburgh accent for a born and raised Weegie. Great actor. I remembered being so surprised when I first saw Trainspotting in the cinema and realizing I knew Mother Superior. Great to find these deleted scenes all these years later.
Skagboys and Trainspotting are such good novels that no matter how good the film is, it can never do the stories justice. If you love the film and haven't read the books, I really recommend them. I have never read a more convincing sociopath character than Simon Williamson. It's brilliant.
The one scene I wished they kept was with Diane when they are at the football when she last speaks to Renton. He returns to the game and she gives him a last look that clearly indicates she is outgrowing him and doesn't trust him to not return to drugs. It gives her character a bit of an ending and closure and foreshadows the decision Renton makes at the end with his mates. A shame a few scenes where only cut to make the film no longer than 90 minutes for a bet and no other reason.
The hospital he's in is canniesburn hospital it closed around 2002/03 and was turned into flats, the structure is exactly the same which is pretty cool.
I love the absurdity they use to portray an addicts experience or even concept of getting clean. Rentons detox plan is the standout one but even now with Swanney prefacing partial paralysis recovery with getting clean shows how paramount getting clean is to addicts who are in desperate need of a clean break.
Yeah they actually can keep the events like Swaney loses his leg or the fact Tommy didn't dead or the fact Mark's brother dead in war... But I kinda understand, if this events added to movie things are getting a bit complicating. Movie just wants to go straight and not tell so much things about the universe. But I think they still nailed it so pretty well. Also I can appreciate they tried shoot those events to scenes atleast.
Peter Mullan's Swanney looks like and older Ewan McGregor/Renton. I think that was the purpose of the scene if you go to 0:39. Swanney an his amputation is like a reflection/look into the future for Renton if he continues to go down this dark path. Especially given that Swanney doesn't seem too concerned on the surface and is making light of his situation by saying it's access to free food a bed with clean sheets an morphine. This scene should have been left in and it would have given the audience a much better understanding as to why Renton wanted to put the bum junkie life behind him. Also Mullan could definitely play McGregor's father or older brother given how similar they look. They should both do a DNA taste to see if they're related.
Swaney hit an artery instead of a vein while shooting up, his leg got gangrene and so it had to go. He jokes he at least still has his middle leg left (his penis) and that hospital life is great as he gets clean sheets, food and all the morphine he needs. He then tells Mark he's going to get clean, and seriously get into dealing instead of using his own supply and selling whats left. With the money he makes, he's going to go to Thailand, where despite his missing leg, the women will be all over him because of his money, even though it wont be a fortune by western standards he'll be able to live very comfortably.
SWANNEY. “Surpise....... I hit the artery by mistake, common enough error, or so that quack tells us. As thought that’s gonna help my leg grow back. Still, could’ve been worse eh, could’ve been my fucking dick! But I’ll tell you Rents, see in here they know how to look after you. Clean sheets, regular meals, and all the morphine you can eat” RENTON. “Great” SWANNEY. “See when I get out of here man I’ve got plans, ken? Gonna get myself straightened out then I’m off down to Thailand where the women know how to treat a guy. You see if you’ve got white skin and a few crisp tenners in your pocket you can live like a fucking King, no fucking problem man”. RENTON. “Sure”. SWANNEY. “See the strategy is this right, you get clean, you get mobile, do a bit of dealing for profit only, and you see a year from now, I’m gonna be lying back watching the rising Sun with a dozen oriental buttocks on my coupon”. RENTON. “Sounds great Swanney”. SWANNEY. “Oh it will be man, I’m telling you”. RENTON. “Mind and send us a postcard like”. SWANNEY. “Oh I sure will”.
I remember this scene from the book , wonder why they kept it out though. Fairly important bit of dialogue for the ending chapter of this brilliant story
Madison Cathcart That's not what he is saying he is saying that Scottish accent is harder to understand than any English accent ie; scouse, Geordie, cockney, west midlands, north of England, manchunian ect.
What makes a great filmmaker (and great filmmaking team): they can kill their darlings, even when no one else would And boy -- lemme tell you -- this is a DARLING of a deleted scene. This is special. @@felixlynch7327 It does present somewhat of a canonical inconsistency, Sick Boy in T2 presents Renton with the news that Swanny is dead as if that is a surprising fact. But all these deleted scenes show that Sick boy new very well that Swanny was in and out of hospital. weird.
@@mattemery4081 Yeah I just theorised that there was no way he could get back to dealing without dipping into his own supply and getting taken advantage of/robbed, what drug user is going to have sympathy for a one legged dealer?
