2:52 is one of the most inspiring moments ever for me in cinema. Renton glances at the bag of cash whilst listening to the chaos behind him. It's one of those "What the hell am I doing here in this situation?" moments. I've often had that glance in my mind when in similar situations, realised I'd had enough and thought "Yup! Time to move on!"
Ironically it was Spud was the right one because the money somehow turn them to evil after he decided to gave whole money to Veronika and didn't want see their friends fight to each other, except Begbie
@@ban66a1 What!? What are you trying to say? He gave the money to Veronica because he wanted to do something good; he knew they were all no good. It had nothing to do with seeing his friends fight each other. They were all terrible people, period.
@@johngilmore697 Spud was a reasonably good natured fellow... just trapped in the junkie cycle with bad friends. Whereas Sick Boy would have no qualms about stealing the money (and Begbie is just a pure psychopath---without any opiate habit lowering his moral bar either), Spud expressed genuine confusion at the idea of running off with the money. As if such a thought would never even cross his mind.
It seems to me that Renton's reaction to 2:24 is a very important moment. At this second, a real transition moment occurs, which shows that Mark is finally and irrevocably tired of his lifestyle.
Exactly, I remember seeing the movie the first time and right after Begbie blew the smoke in his face I said that was the straw that broke the camels back, he is taking the money and bolting. You could see before he was wrestling with the Idea beforehand talking to Spud. But the instance Begbie blew the cigarette smoke in his face he had fully made up his mind in that second. And also to move on and “choose life” quitting drugs and the lifestyle that goes along with it. A example of exceptional movie making.
Renton was already tired of it. He was ready to take the money a few seconds earlier with Spud while Begbie & Simon were in the bathroom. I believe Spud would’ve been down, but he thought Renton was only joking and Simon returned before Spud realized the proposition was serious. What really happens at 2:24 is Renton sees his chance to grab the bag and make a run for it while Spud & Sickboy are occupied trying to calm Begbie. However, Begbie being the most treacherous of the crew, immediately recognizes Mark’s intentions, so he demands Mark bring him a cigarette to prevent him from running off with the bag. The movie has already established that Mark is done with his old friends & lifestyle by this point. From Begbie crashing with him in London, to his disgust with the h deal immediately following Tommy’s funeral. Mark does however hold a soft spot for Spud. This scene was so tense because Mark & Begbie both knew that Mark intended to run out of the pub with the money, but not a word was spoken about it directly. Begbie telling Renton to “bring me down a smoke” was his way of saying “don’t even think about touching that money”.
Me too. You realize that some people need to be in your past. I got tired of the lifestyle and all the drama that came with it and it wasn't even me. It was my ex's friends. He had the nerve to bring some bitch to our house that had to hit out on her and let her divide up drugs in our garage. Then he couldn't figure out why I was pissed off at him and why I told him I didn't want her at her house anymore. Guilty by association, that's all it would take would be for those idiots to find out that we're friends with her and that would be it. I don't blame him for feeling the way he does. After a while you grow up and you get sick of it, at least some people do.

You should all read the prequel novel "The Blade Artist" which describes Begbies early years in school when he sorts out a school bully and becomes friends with Renton.
I think later down the line, when it came to divvying the money, Begbie would've held them up and taken it. Rent probably had the best-intentioned plan. At 2:22 Renton realizes his friends are fuckups and he has to leave 'em.
Nah, Begbie was a psycho, but he respected his friends. In the book, it's stated that betraying a friend is the worst sin in Begbie's world, and that it deserved the worst punishment
