As you said, “variety is the spice of life”. The techie stuff is great, but mixing it up with the psychology behind the projects adds a most valuable layer to your channel. Thanks for all you do for us.

My advice: give your whole gift which includes the technical but also includes the filmmaker’s perspective. There are plenty of technical videos out there. Filmmaking insight is more rare.

Congratulations to Mark on an amazing doc (natch) and a fantastic & engaging Q&A. I appreciate his kind words about the sound work (sincerely - thank you!) but a couple of things need to be stated: The vision for the sound design starts with the overall vision of the director of the piece. My conversations with Mark about creating a track for any of his films always start with me asking him what he's hearing in his head. In Mark's case *he always has a clear answer from which I can start my work*. That was definitely the case here and the foundation was even stronger given the preliminary work done by Mark and his editing team. IMHO, this is the sign of a strong director...one who is thinking about sound from day one, not as simply something that will be "dealt with in post". As so many people have said here, Mark: Great work! Looking forward to enjoying the next one!

I really appreciate the transparency into your process. To answer your question for 2022, I think this video breakdown is a perfect template. Maybe 40% tech/gear, 60% process. They’re both important but YT is flooded with gear content and lacking depth when it comes to film making. The Q&A is also great because I’m sure so much of this is second nature for you. The community can guide your content. You’ve built an engaged audience. Kudos to you for that alone. This is a shining example of what is possible on this platform. Keep it up brother! 🙌🏼🙏🏼

    • @markbone

    • @ryanwhite4855
      @ryanwhite4855 2 роки тому

Yeah man! Just another thought…it would be really instructive if you took some frame grabs for a few scenes from different films you’ve made and did a lighting breakdown. Maybe explaining what was there before you started setting up lights and then what lights you used, where you put them (maybe draw on the frame to show where and direction) and why. Kind of like the Doc version of the WanderingDP. I love learning about how things are lit but it’s one thing when you have grips/gaffers and a whole truck full of gear vs a light and fast doc shoot where you may have just a couple lights and are flying solo. Muchas gracias! 🙏🏼👊🏼

As a director/cinematographer that's still pretty new and mostly teaching myself, I really appreciate seeing more of how different people approach their creative process. Love all of your content, Mark! Specifically how you break stuff down to teach. Well crafted and easy to learn from. How often do you know how long the final film needs to be prior to shooting? Are you usually starting out getting coverage with an intended TRT in mind? Or do you determine the length once you get in the edit? Curious how your approach changes based on the intended TRT of the final piece.

And thanks for this beautiful content!! You are Peter McKinnon minus the trendy fireworks and you actually do shoot stuff! :-)

    • @markbone

Yeah I think that’s always a risk. And you need to be upfront with your character that there is a possibility it couldn’t work. It’s good to only commit to the project once you’re confident in it. Everything else is exploratory. I never tell them it’s guaranteed until I feel confident

I would love to learn more about the business side of documentary filmmaking. How do you make money off documentaries? You mentioned this one isn’t going to a broadcaster, does that mean it was just a passion project and doesn’t bring in income?

There are too many “how to” videos out here! I would like to know more about how you develop instinct and your philosophy around film making.
Things like how do you determine what is a “good” or “bad” fear going into a project?
Answering questions along the lines of how the Greeks believed you weren’t a genius, but rather you had a damon or a genius. You are not a genius.
How do you think about inspiration? Do you believe it’s something you own or is intrinsically something one has?
How do you stay hungry these days now that it seems like you have some stability in your career? If stability is even a thing, lol.
Do you cross train your creative brain? Like an basketball player who will work with sprinters or do some form of martial arts in the off season.
What conflicts happen within your production teams? What are some ways you resolve conflicts? What is the art of living with conflict like for you?
Sorry if these are too many questions! I’m a 2 on Enneagram. So I love to get closer and ask lots of questions.

unrelated to the content, but you can totally quit coffee! My gf was had such a gnarly caffeine addiction since a kid & she’s been off it for about a year now. She feels so much better without it!

Ok Mark, conflicts, challenges, bad moments are what make a documentary interesting, but I have some questions, if you are making the story as it happens, your hero may not be available to show his weaknesses and defeats, maybe in the future, with things resolved, but you have to recreate the tension and it's not the same as living it in the moment, how do you manage a dog that wants to bite you?

We have a ton of videos about recreating tension and retelling stories over in theartofdocumentary.com. They would serve you best over what I could write in one comment :)
