    I really appreciate what your doing, it's great for everyone including yourself, and I really appreciate it because it's obvious your very knowledgeable. Just had the cat and O2 sensor stolen off from my Honda Element. I fortunately found a real honest mechanic in the little town I live . He's been welding exhaust and cats for 50 years, and he replaced everything and it was less then my $500. deductible, so I did not use my insurance. I also got a warranty on my cat. I felt fortunate to be able to do it this way.

    Good information on the video. My cat was stolen on my wife’s Prius and the local muffler shop said they are not able to get the parts for months. I went to Toyota dealer parts and order the cat parts and prepaid for it. This move me up the list of people waiting for cat parts. The part came in a week. I am a retired auto mechanic and installed the parts myself. I made a claim to my insurance company. I told them I needed to get the car fix right away and it was faster to get it fix myself. The insurance paid for the dealer parts minus my deductible.

    RE: Total loss, my insurance company has two tiers: 1) Total loss, they pay you what they say the car is worth, and they keep the car (for scrap), or 2) They pay a percentage of what they say the car is worth (maybe 80%) but you get to keep the car. I did this after a minor accident where the insurance company told me my old Plymouth Vista was worth something like only $750 (which was less than the needed repairs). I took their percentage, which I think was 80%, or $600. I drove the damaged car for a while, and eventually sold it to sell to a scrap dealer myself for around $200, so came out a bit ahead. (This was many years ago, that's why I don't remember the actual figures.) Something similar happened with someone I know who had extensive hail damage to her older Honda Accord. It looked like someone had beaten all over the car with a ball-peen hammer, but functionally, it still drove just fine. She took the money and continues to drive the old car.

    I can choose the shop but the reimbursement is not always the same. I prefer to get my hybrid Lexus maintained by Lexus or Toyota when I need OEM parts. The shop that my insurance used on a stereo as an example was 1/3 the price but not an OEM part. Depends on the situation but agreed to make the calls and get quotes. In many cases, it has been a much better deal to use the companies my insurance recommends such as bodywork, and glass repair. I even call them to find companies when I don't do a claim both on my vehicle and property. I have a brother that is a professional mechanic so I usually discuss this with him also. Agreed to do research and include the insurance company in that research. Great explanation on the insurance. I have a sister who pays too much because she has that fear of insurance.

If I take it to theirs and yes it's a body shop they pay 100% minus the deductible. I had told them I chose the shop. The appraiser told me he didn't recommend me getting an aftermarket because they fail. So I went to their shop and he listed my cats with aftermarket. And the shop will send my vehicle to. Muffler shop. So? I still haven't gotten it fixed yet.

    I just had a bad experience with Allstate. They did not explain (very well) where to go. I already know the name of the body shop that did it last time. (This is CAT #2 that's getting replaced! Yes, It was stolen for the 3rd time!!) Last time there was a delay in getting it fixed because they don't stock the O2 sensor and the Cat Converter. The choice of repair shop was determined by the Insurance company's network and the distance (1/2 mile) to get there. When I called the body shop, they said there is a delay in getting them from the supplier (Toyota). Also, the body shop does not do the anti-theft, welding or whatever. There is one place that is not in the network that claims to have them with the rebar shaped and welded to the Cat Converter. Of course, they are about 2 miles away. I may need a tow because the exhaust resonator is dangling down almost to the street level. I think it is drivable if I don't hit any potholes and have perfect pavement, which I may not. At this point all I have is an appointment with the body shop closest to me. On Monday, I may call them and change the claim to go directly to the muffler shop that has the pre-welded after market cat converters. My thinking is that the thieves will recognize that this is an aftermarket converter, and pass it over. Previously I went to that muffler shop AFTER the insurance company's body shop installed everything, but would not install any anti-theft device. I had a cat shield installed, which got stolen along with cat converter #2 !!

      @mufflertech  Рік тому

      This sometimes happens that the car will be deemed a total loss from the insurance. As the insured you have the right to retain the vehicle as a "salvage" title moving forward. You're correct in that you can buy it back for salvage value, however, everyone should consider what that does to your resale value and more importantly the insurance coverage you can get after this takes place. Most insurance companies will significantly reduce the amount of coverage or won't cover a salvage title at all.

    I appreciate your video and helping people to protect from catalytic convertor’ thieves. Recently, someone tried to steal my 2002 Honda accord’s catalytic convertor because a muffler mechanic saw a cut on my pipe. My neighbor told me that he heard my car alarm and saw my car lifted up, but unsuccessfully it was not stolen. A muffler mechanic was able to weld it. I tried to find a protection device or part for my catalytic convertor. I found 2 options. Since miller cat does not make it for my Honda, a mechanic said that he can custom make it at $800. I thought it was expensive. Another place said he can install a cat strap/cat eye for about $670. It is cheaper but it is still expensive. What do you think it is a good device to protect my car from happening again? Thanks!

    • @mufflertech
      @mufflertech  3 роки тому

      We see this every once in a while. It’s usually with cut rate insurance companies. Unfortunately it’s in the small print of your policy. Betterment is supposed to be applied to parts that are consumable like tires. You can argue with them how do they prove the usage/wear of a catalytic converter.

    Great video very informative. My question was around the total loss. What does that mean exactly they try to solve it similar to an accident. If you own it they try to pay you out the value and take the car or you keep your own car and they pay less and claim it salvaged? Another what occurs in a total loss situation?

    • @mufflertech
      @mufflertech  3 роки тому

      They will “total loss” a car if the cost of the repair is more then the vehicle is worth. Most companies work on an 80% threshold which means if you have an 10,000 dollar car and the repairs are over 8000 dollars they will total it.

      This is an unfortunate reality with older cars. Insurance companies work on a 60-80% threshold on repair vs value. This means if the repairs exceed between 60-80% of the value of the vehicle they will consider it a total loss. @@airgliderz if you have insurance you pay an annual amount to be covered for certain things, including a tow. I realize you CAN drive the car, I have made a specific video on the exact topic (my point was to show if you didn’t have insurance you could drive the car to a repair shop, not to use it like this indefinitely). What you should realize is continuing to drive the car on a daily basis is not only very inconsiderate to those around you but also damages the environment and exposes you to carbon monoxide inside the cabin of the vehicle.
      It sounds like you’re a pretty handy guy, that’s great, but why would you do the repair yourself when your insurance pays to have it professionally done? You want to save your insurance company money? That’s admirable I suppose, I assure you they’re not trying to save you any money. The bottom line is no matter how “simple” you think this repair is, most do not have the skill set, tools, or basic knowledge on how to do it, so in those cases it’s best left to a professional.
